Semi-classical analysis of piecewise quasi-polynomial functions and applications to geometric quantization

Motivated by applications to multiplicity formulas in index theory, we study a family of distributions $Θ(m;k)$ associated to a piecewise quasi-polynomial function $m$. The family is indexed by an integer $k \in \mathbb{Z}_{>0}$, and admits an asymptotic expansion as $k \rightarrow \infty$, which generalizes the expansion obtained in the Euler-Maclaurin formula. When $m$ is the multiplicity function arising from the quantization of a symplectic manifold, the leading term of the asymptotic expansion is the Duistermaat-Heckman measure. Our main result is that $m$ is uniquely determined by a collection of such asymptotic expansions. We also show that the construction is compatible with pushforwards. As an application, we describe a simpler proof that formal quantization is functorial with respect to restrictions to a subgroup.

Bouquets revisited and equivariant elliptic cohomology

Let M be a spin manifold with a circular action. Given an elliptic curve E, we introduce, as in Grojnowski, elliptic bouquets of germs of holomorphic equivariant cohomology classes on M. Following Bott-Taubes and Rosu, we show that integration of an elliptic bouquet is well defined. In particular, this imply Witten's rigidity theorem. We emphasize the similarity between integration in K-theory and in elliptic cohomology.

The equivariant index of twisted dirac operators and semi-classical limits

Consider a spin manifold M, equipped with a line bundle L and an action of a compact Lie group G. We can attach to this data a family Theta(k) of distributions on the dual of the Lie algebra of G. The aim of this paper is to study the asymptotic behaviour of Theta(k) when k is large, and M possibly non compact, and to explore a functorial consequence of this formula for reduced spaces.

The equivariant Riemann-Roch theorem and the graded Todd class

Let G be a torus and M a G-Hamiltonian manifold with Kostant line bundle L and proper moment map. Let P be the weight lattice of G. We consider a parameter k and the multiplicity $m(λ,k)$ of the quantized representation associated to M and the k-th power of L . We prove that the weighted sum $\sum m(λ,k) f(λ/k)$ of the value of a test function f on points of the lattice $P/k$ has an asymptotic development in terms of the twisted Duistermaat-Heckman distributions associated to the graded Todd class of M. When M is compact, and f polynomial, the asymptotic series is finite and exact.

Multiplicity of compact group representations and applications to Kronecker coefficients

These notes are an expanded version of a talk given by the second author. Our main interest is focused on the challenging problem of computing Kronecker coefficients. We decided, at the beginning, to take a very general approach to the problem of studying multiplicity functions, and we survey the various aspects of the theory that comes into play, giving a detailed bibliography to orient the reader. Nonetheless the main general theorems involving multiplicities functions (convexity, quasi-polynomial behavior, Jeffrey-Kirwan residues) are stated without proofs. Then, we present in detail our approach to the computational problem, giving explicit formulae, and outlining an algorithm that calculate many interesting examples, some of which appear in the literature also in connection with Hilbert series.

Local asymptotic Euler-Maclaurin expansion for Riemann sums over a semi-rational polyhedron

Consider the Riemann sum of a smooth compactly supported function h(x) on a polyhedron in R^d, sampled at the points of the lattice Z^d/t. We give an asymptotic expansion when t goes to infinity, writing each coefficient of this expansion as a sum indexed by the faces f of the polyhedron, where the f-term is the integral over f of a differential operator applied to the function h(x). In particular, if a Euclidean scalar product is chosen, we prove that the differential operator for the face f can be chosen (in a unique way) to involve only normal derivatives to f. Our formulas are valid for a semi-rational polyhedron and a real sampling parameter t, if we allow for step-polynomial coefficients, instead of just constant ones.

[Q,R]=0 and Kostant partition functions

On a polarized compact symplectic manifold endowed with an action of a compact Lie group, in analogy with geometric invariant theory, one can define the space of invariant functions of degree k. A central statement in symplectic geometry, the quantization commutes with reduction hypothesis, is equivalent to saying that the dimension of these invariant functions depends polynomially on k. This statement was proved by Meinrenken and Sjamaar under positivity conditions. In this paper, we give a new proof of this polynomiality property. The proof is based on a study of the Atiyah-Bott fixed point formula from the point of view of the theory of partition functions, and a technique for localizing positivity.

Poisson summation formula and Box splines

We generalize Dahmen-Micchelli deconvolution formula for Box splines with parameters. Our proof is based on identities for Poisson summation of rational functions with poles on hyperplanes.

The infinitesimal index

In this note, we study an invariant associated to the zeros of the moment map generated by an action form, the infinitesimal index. This construction will be used to study the compactly supported equivariant cohomology of the zeros of the moment map and to give formulas for the multiplicity index map of a transversally elliptic operator.

Infinitesimal index: cohomology computations

In this note several computations of equivariant cohomology groups are performed. For the compactly supported equivariant cohomology, the notion of infinitesimal index developed in arXiv:1003.3525, allows to describe these groups in terms of certain spaces of distributions arising in the theory of splines. The new version contains a large number of improvements.

Discrete series representations and K multiplicities for U(p,q). User's guide

This document is a companion for the Maple program : Discrete series and K-types for U(p,q) available on:http://www.math.jussieu.fr/~vergne We explain an algorithm to compute the multiplicities of an irreducible representation of U(p)x U(q) in a discrete series of U(p,q). It is based on Blattner's formula. We recall the general mathematical background to compute Kostant partition functions via multidimensional residues, and we outline our algorithm. We also point out some properties of the piecewise polynomial functions describing multiplicities based on Paradan's results.

A Remark on the Convolution with Box Splines

The semi-discrete convolution with the Box Spline is an important tool in approximation theory. We give a formula for the difference between semi-discrete convolution and convolution with the Box Spline. This formula involves multiple Bernoulli polynomials.

Vector partition functions and index of transversally elliptic operators

Let G be a torus acting linearly on a complex vector space M, and let X be the list of weights of G in M. We determine the equivariant K-theory of the open subset of M consisting of points with finite stabilizers. We identify it to the space DM(X) of functions on the lattice of weights of G, satisfying the cocircuit difference equations associated to X, introduced by Dahmen--Micchelli in the context of the theory of splines in order to study vector partition functions. This allows us to determine the range of the index map from G-transversally elliptic operators on M to generalized functions on G and to prove that the index map is an isomorphism on the image. This is a setting studied by Atiyah-Singer which is in a sense universal for index computations.
