Applications of Equivariant Cohomology

We will discuss the equivariant cohomology of a manifold endowed with the action of a Lie group. Localization formulae for equivariant integrals are explained by a vanishing theorem for equivariant cohomology with generalized coefficients. We then give applications to integration of characteristic classes on symplectic quotients and to indices of transversally elliptic operators. In particular, we state a conjecture for the index of a transversally elliptic operator linked to a Hamiltonian action. In the last part, we describe algorithms for numerical computations of values of multivariate spline functions and of vector-partition functions of classical root systems.

All what I wanted to know about Langlands program and was afraid to ask

These notes are very informal notes on the Langlands program. I had some pleasure in daring to ask colleagues to explain to me the importance of some of the recent results on Langlands program, so I thought I will record (to the best of my understanding) these conversations, and then share them with other mathematicians. These notes are intended for non specialists. Myself, I am not a specialist on this particular theme. I tried to give motivations and a few simple examples.

Mixed toric residues and tropical degenerations

Building on our earlier work on toric residues and reduction, we give a proof for the mixed toric residue conejecture of Batyrev and Materov. We simplify and streamline our technique of tropical degenerations, which allows one to interpolate between two localization principles: one appearing in the intersection theory toric quotients and the other in the calculus of toric residues. This quickly leads to the proof of the conjecture, which gives a closed form for the summation of a generating series whose coefficients are certain variants of the "numbers" of rational curves on toric complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds.

Toric reduction and a conjecture of Batyrev and Materov

We present a new integration formula for intersection numbers on toric quotients, extending the results of Witten, Jeffrey and Kirwan on localization. Our work was motivated by the Toric Residue Mirror Conjecture of Batyrev and Materov; as an application of our integration formula, we obtain a proof of this conjecture in a generalized setting.

Residue formulae for vector partitions and Euler-MacLaurin sums

Given a finite set of vectors spanning a lattice and lying in a halfspace of a real vector space, to each vector $a$ in this vector space one can associate a polytope consisting of nonnegative linear combinations of the vectors in the set which sum up to $a$. This polytope is called the partition polytope of $a$. If $a$ is integral, this polytope contains a finite set of lattice points corresponding to nonnegative integral linear combinations. The partition polytope associated to an integral $a$ is a rational convex polytope, and any rational convex polytope can be realized canonically as a partition polytope. We consider the problem of counting the number of lattice points in partition polytopes, or, more generally, computing sums of values of exponential-polynomial functions on the lattice points in such polytopes. We give explicit formulae for these quantities using a notion of multi-dimensional residue due to Jeffrey-Kirwan. We show, in particular, that the dependence of these quantities on $a$ is exponential-polynomial on "large neighborhoods" of chambers. Our method relies on a theorem of separation of variables for the generating function, or, more generally, for periodic meromorphic functions with poles on an arrangement of affine hyperplanes.

Arrangements of hyperplanes II: Szenes formula and Eisenstein series

The aim of this article is to generalize in several variables some formulae for Eisenstein series in one variable. For example the formula $2ζ(2k) = (2π)^{2k} \frac{B_{2k}}{(2k)!} = Res_{z=0}(\frac{1}{z^{2k}(1-e^z)})$ for the values of zeta functions at even integers in functions of Bernoulli numbers. A. Szenes proved in several variables a similar residue formula for the values of the zeta function introduced by Witten. We introduce some Eisenstein series by averaging over a lattice rational functions with poles in an arrangement of hyperplanes. We give another proof of Szenes residue formula by relating it to the constant term of these Eisenstein series.

Arrangements of hyperplanes I: Rational functions and Jeffrey-Kirwan residue

Consider the space $R_Δ$ of rational functions of several variables with poles on a fixed arrangement $Δ$ of hyperplanes. We obtain a decomposition of $R_Δ$ as a module over the ring of differential operators with constant coefficients. We generalize to the space $R_Δ$ the notions of principal part and of residue, and we describe its relations to Laplace transforms of locally polynomial functions. This explains algebraic aspects of work by L. Jeffreys and F. Kirwan about integrals of equivariant cohomology classes on Hamiltonian manifolds. As another application, we will construct multidimensional versions of Eisenstein series in a subsequent article, and we will obtain another proof of a residue formula of A. Szenes for Witten zeta functions.
