Investigating sanity checks for saliency maps with image and text classification

Saliency maps have shown to be both useful and misleading for explaining model predictions especially in the context of images. In this paper, we perform sanity checks for text modality and show that the conclusions made for image do not directly transfer to text. We also analyze the effects of the input multiplier in certain saliency maps using similarity scores, max-sensitivity and infidelity evaluation metrics. Our observations reveal that the input multiplier carries input's structural patterns in explanation maps, thus leading to similar results regardless of the choice of model parameters. We also show that the smoothness of a Neural Network (NN) function can affect the quality of saliency-based explanations. Our investigations reveal that replacing ReLUs with Softplus and MaxPool with smoother variants such as LogSumExp (LSE) can lead to explanations that are more reliable based on the infidelity evaluation metric.

On the compact operators case of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for numerical radius

We study the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for numerical radius restricted to the case of compact operators (BPBp-nu for compact operators in short). We show that $C_0(L)$ spaces have the BPBp-nu for compact operators for every Hausdorff topological locally compact space $L$. To this end, on the one hand, we provide some techniques allowing to pass the BPBp-nu for compact operators from subspaces to the whole space and, on the other hand, we prove some strong approximation property of $C_0(L)$ spaces and their duals. Besides, we also show that real Hilbert spaces and isometric preduals of $\ell_1$ have the BPBp-nu for compact operators.

Daugavet property in projective symmetric tensor products of Banach spaces

We show that all the symmetric projective tensor products of a Banach space $X$ have the Daugavet property provided $X$ has the Daugavet property and either $X$ is an $L_1$-predual (i.e.\ $X^*$ is isometric to an $L_1$-space) or $X$ is a vector-valued $L_1$-space. In the process of proving it, we get a number of results of independent interest. For instance, we characterise "localised" versions of the Daugavet property (i.e.\ Daugavet points and $Δ$-points recently introduced) for $L_1$-preduals in terms of the extreme points of the topological dual, a result which allows to characterise a polyhedrality property of real $L_1$-preduals in terms of the absence of $Δ$-points and also to provide new examples of $L_1$-preduals having the convex diametral local diameter two property. These results are also applied to nicely embedded Banach spaces so, in particular, to function algebras. Next, we show that the Daugavet property and the polynomial Daugavet property are equivalent for $L_1$-preduals and for spaces of Lipschitz functions. Finally, an improvement of recent results about the Daugavet property for projective tensor products is also got.

Investigating Saturation Effects in Integrated Gradients

Integrated Gradients has become a popular method for post-hoc model interpretability. De-spite its popularity, the composition and relative impact of different regions of the integral path are not well understood. We explore these effects and find that gradients in saturated regions of this path, where model output changes minimally, contribute disproportionately to the computed attribution. We propose a variant of IntegratedGradients which primarily captures gradients in unsaturated regions and evaluate this method on ImageNet classification networks. We find that this attribution technique shows higher model faithfulness and lower sensitivity to noise com-pared with standard Integrated Gradients. A note-book illustrating our computations and results is available at https://github.com/vivekmig/captum-1/tree/ExpandedIG.

Captum: A unified and generic model interpretability library for PyTorch

In this paper we introduce a novel, unified, open-source model interpretability library for PyTorch [12]. The library contains generic implementations of a number of gradient and perturbation-based attribution algorithms, also known as feature, neuron and layer importance algorithms, as well as a set of evaluation metrics for these algorithms. It can be used for both classification and non-classification models including graph-structured models built on Neural Networks (NN). In this paper we give a high-level overview of supported attribution algorithms and show how to perform memory-efficient and scalable computations. We emphasize that the three main characteristics of the library are multimodality, extensibility and ease of use. Multimodality supports different modality of inputs such as image, text, audio or video. Extensibility allows adding new algorithms and features. The library is also designed for easy understanding and use. Besides, we also introduce an interactive visualization tool called Captum Insights that is built on top of Captum library and allows sample-based model debugging and visualization using feature importance metrics.

On quasi norm attaining operators between Banach spaces

We introduce a weakened notion of norm attainment for bounded linear operators between Banach spaces which we call \emph{quasi norm attaining operators}. An operator $T\colon X \longrightarrow Y$ between the Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ is quasi norm attaining if there is a sequence $(x_n)$ of norm one elements in $X$ such that $(Tx_n)$ converges to some $u\in Y$ with $\|u\|=\|T\|$. Norm attaining operators in the usual sense (i.e.\ operators for which there is a point in the unit ball where the norm of its image equals the norm of the operator) and compact operators satisfy this definition. The main result of the paper is that strong Radon-Nikodým operators such as weakly compact operators can be approximated by quasi norm attaining operators (even by a stronger version of the definition), which does not hold for norm attaining operators. This allows us to give characterizations of the Radon-Nikodým property in term of the denseness of quasi norm attaining operators for both domain spaces and range spaces, extending previous results by Bourgain and Huff. We also present positive and negative results on the denseness of quasi norm attaining operators, characterize both finite dimensionality and reflexivity in terms of quasi norm attaining operators, discuss conditions to obtain that quasi norm attaining operators are actually norm attaining, study the relationship with the norm attainment of the adjoint operator, and present some stability properties. We finish the paper with some open questions.

Some stability properties for the Bishop--Phelps--Bollobás property for Lipschitz maps

We study the stability behavior of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for Lipschitz maps (Lip-BPB property). This property is a Lipschitz version of the classical Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property and deals with the possibility of approximating a Lipschitz map that almost attains its (Lipschitz) norm at a pair of distinct points by a Lipschitz map attaining its norm at a pair of distinct points (relatively) very closed to the previous one. We first study the stability of this property under the (metric) sum of the domain spaces. Next, we study when it is possible to pass the Lip-BPB property from scalar functions to some vector-valued maps, getting some positive results related to the notions of $Γ$-flat operators and $ACK$ structure. We get sharper results for the case of Lipschitz compact maps. The behaviour of the property with respect to absolute sums of the target space is also studied. We also get results similar to the above ones about the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps and of Lipschitz compact maps.

Examples and applications of the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps

We study the density of the set $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ of those Lipschitz maps from a (complete pointed) metric space $M$ to a Banach space $Y$ which strongly attain their norm (i.e.\ the supremum defining the Lipschitz norm is actually a maximum). We present new and somehow counterintuitive examples, and we give some applications. First, we show that $\operatorname{SNA}(\mathbb T,Y)$ is not dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(\mathbb T,Y)$ for any Banach space $Y$, where $\mathbb T$ denotes the unit circle in the Euclidean plane. This provides the first example of a Gromov concave metric space (i.e.\ every molecule is a strongly exposed point of the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free space) for which the density does not hold. Next, we construct metric spaces $M$ satisfying that $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ is dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(M,Y)$ regardless $Y$ but which contains an isometric copy of $[0,1]$ and so the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal F(M)$ fails the Radon--Nikodým property, answering in the negative a posed question. Furthermore, an example $M$ can be produced failing all the previously known sufficient conditions to get the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps. Finally, among other applications, we prove that given a compact metric $M$ which does not contains any isometric copy of $[0,1]$ and a Banach space $Y$, if $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ is dense, then $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ actually contains an open dense subset and $B_{\mathcal F(M)}=\overline{\mathrm{co}}(\operatorname{str-exp}(B_{\mathcal F(M)}))$. Further, we show that if $M$ is a boundedly compact metric space for which $\operatorname{SNA}(M,\mathbb R)$ is dense in ${\mathrm{Lip}}_0(M,\mathbb R)$, then the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free space on $M$ is the closed convex hull of its strongly exposed points.

Norm attaining operators of finite rank

We provide sufficient conditions on a Banach space $X$ in order that there exist norm attaining operators of rank at least two from $X$ into any Banach space of dimension at least two. For example, a rather weak such condition is the existence of a non-trivial cone consisting of norm attaining functionals on $X$. We go on to discuss density of norm attaining operators of finite rank among all operators of finite rank, which holds for instance when there is a dense linear subspace consisting of norm attaining functionals on $X$. In particular, we consider the case of Hilbert space valued operators where we obtain a complete characterization of these properties. In the final section we offer a candidate for a counterexample to the complex Bishop-Phelps theorem on $c_0$, the first such counterexample on a certain complex Banach space being due to V. Lomonosov.

Emerging notions of norm attainment for Lipschitz maps between Banach spaces

We classify several notions of norm attaining Lipschitz maps which were introduced previously, and present the relations among them in order to verify proper inclusions. We also analyze some results for the sets of Lipschitz maps satisfying each of these properties to be dense or not in $\Lip(X,Y)$. For instance, we characterize a Banach space $Y$ with the Radon-Nikodým property in terms of the denseness of norm attaining Lipschitz maps with values in $Y$. Further, we introduce a property called the local directional Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for Lipschitz compact maps, which extends the one studied previously for scalar-valued functions, and provide some new positive results.

The Bishop--Phelps--Bollobás property for Lipschitz maps

In this paper, we introduce and study a Lipschitz version of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property (Lip-BPB property). This property deals with the possibility of making a uniformly simultaneous approximation of a Lipschitz map $F$ and a pair of points at which $F$ almost attains its norm by a Lipschitz map $G$ and a pair of points such that $G$ strongly attains its norm at the new pair of points. We first show that if $M$ is a finite pointed metric space and $Y$ is a finite-dimensional Banach space, then the pair $(M,Y)$ has the Lip-BPB property, and that both finiteness assumptions are needed. Next, we show that if $M$ is a uniformly Gromov concave pointed metric space (i.e.\ the molecules of $M$ form a set of uniformly strongly exposed points), then $(M,Y)$ has the Lip-BPB property for every Banach space $Y$. We further prove that this is the case for finite concave metric spaces, ultrametric spaces, and Hölder metric spaces. The extension of the Lip-BPB property from $(M,\mathbb R)$ to some Banach spaces $Y$ and some results for compact Lipschitz maps are also discussed.

On the numerical index with respect to an operator

Given Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, and a norm-one operator $G\in \mathcal{L}(X,Y)$, the numerical index with respect to $G$, $n_G(X,Y)$, is the greatest constant $k\geq 0$ such that $$\max_{|w|=1}\|G+wT\|\geq 1 + k \|T\|$$ for all $T\in \mathcal{L}(X,Y)$. We present some results on the set $\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{L}(X,Y))$ of the values of the numerical indices with respect to all norm-one operators on $\mathcal{L}(X,Y)$. We show that $\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{L}(X,Y))=\{0\}$ when $X$ or $Y$ is a real Hilbert space of dimension greater than one and also when $X$ or $Y$ is the space of bounded or compact operators on an infinite-dimensional real Hilbert space. For complex Hilbert spaces $H_1$, $H_2$ of dimension greater than one, we show that $\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{L}(H_1,H_2))\subseteq \{0,1/2\}$ and the value $1/2$ is taken if and only if $H_1$ and $H_2$ are isometrically isomorphic. Besides, $\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{L}(X,H))\subseteq [0,1/2]$ and $\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{L}(H,Y))\subseteq [0,1/2]$ when $H$ is a complex infinite-dimensional Hilbert space and $X$ and $Y$ are arbitrary complex Banach spaces. We also show that $\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{L}(L_1(μ_1),L_1(μ_2)))\subseteq \{0,1\}$ and $\mathcal{N}(\mathcal{L}(L_\infty(μ_1),L_\infty(μ_2)))\subseteq \{0,1\}$ for arbitrary $σ$-finite measures $μ_1$ and $μ_2$, in both the real and the complex cases. Also, we show that the Lipschitz numerical range of Lipschitz maps can be viewed as the numerical range of convenient bounded linear operators with respect to a bounded linear operator. Further, we provide some results which show the behaviour of the value of the numerical index when we apply some Banach space operations, as constructing diagonal operators between $c_0$-, $\ell_1$-, or $\ell_\infty$-sums of Banach spaces, composition operators on some vector-valued function spaces, and taking the adjoint to an operator.

On proximinality of subspaces and the lineability of the set of norm-attaining functionals of Banach spaces

We show that for every $1<n<\infty$, there exits a Banach space $X_n$ containing proximinal subspaces of codimension $n$ but no proximinal finite codimensional subspaces of higher codimension. Moreover, the set of norm-attaining functionals of $X_n$ contains $n$-dimensional subspaces, but no subspace of higher dimension. This gives a $n$-by-$n$ version of the solutions given by Read and Rmoutil to problems of Singer and Godefroy. We also study the existence of strongly proximinal subspaces of finite codimension, showing that for every $1<n<\infty$ and $1\leqslant k <n$, there is a Banach space $X_{n,k}$ containing proximinal subspaces of finite codimension up to $n$ but not higher, and containing strongly proximinal subspaces of finite codimension up to $k$ but not higher. Finally, we deal with possible infinite-dimensional versions of the previous results, showing that there are \emph{non-separable} Banach spaces whose set of norm-attaining functionals contains infinite-dimensional separable linear subspaces but no non-separable subspaces.

Strong diameter two property and convex combination of slices reaching the unit sphere

We characterise the class of those Banach spaces in which every convex combination of slices of the unit ball intersects the unit sphere as the class of those spaces in which every convex combination of slices of the unit ball contains two points at distance exactly two. Also, we study when the convex combinations of slices of the unit ball are relatively open or has non-empty relative interior for different topologies, studying the relationship between them and studying these properties for $L_{\infty}$-spaces and preduals of $L_1$-spaces.

On strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps

We study the set $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ of those Lipschitz maps from a (complete pointed) metric space $M$ to a Banach space $Y$ which (strongly) attain their Lipschitz norm (i.e.\ the supremum defining the Lipschitz norm is a maximum). Extending previous results, we prove that this set is not norm dense when $M$ is a length space (or local) or when $M$ is a closed subset of $\mathbb{R}$ with positive Lebesgue measure, providing new examples which have very different topological properties than the previously known ones. On the other hand, we study the linear properties which are sufficient to get Lindenstrauss property A for the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal{F}(M)$ over $M$, and show that all of them actually provide the norm density of $\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y)$ in the space of all Lipschitz maps from $M$ to any Banach space $Y$. Next, we prove that $\operatorname{SNA}(M,\mathbb{R})$ is weakly sequentially dense in the space of all Lipschitz functions for all metric spaces $M$. Finally, we show that the norm of the bidual space of $\mathcal{F}(M)$ is octahedral provided the metric space $M$ is discrete but not uniformly discrete or $M'$ is infinite.

On the pointwise Bishop--Phelps--Bollobás property for operators

We study approximation of operators between Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ that nearly attain their norms in a given point by operators that attain their norms at the same point. When such approximations exist, we say that the pair $(X, Y)$ has the pointwise Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property (pointwise BPB property for short). In this paper we mostly concentrate on those $X$, called universal pointwise BPB domain spaces, such that $(X, Y)$ possesses pointwise BPB property for every $Y$, and on those $Y$, called universal pointwise BPB range spaces, such that $(X, Y)$ enjoys pointwise BPB property for every uniformly smooth $X$. We show that every universal pointwise BPB domain space is uniformly convex and that $L_p(μ)$ spaces fail to have this property when $p>2$. For universal pointwise BPB range space, we show that every simultaneously uniformly convex and uniformly smooth Banach space fails it if its dimension is greater than one. We also discuss a version of the pointwise BPB property for compact operators.

Equivalent norms with an extremely nonlineable set of norm attaining functionals

We present a construction that enables one to find Banach spaces $X$ whose sets $NA(X)$ of norm attaining functionals do not contain two-dimensional subspaces and such that, consequently, $X$ does not contain proximinal subspaces of finite codimension greater than one, extending the results recently provided by Read and Rmoutil. Roughly speaking, we construct an equivalent renorming with the requested properties for every Banach space $X$ where the set $NA(X)$ for the original norm is not "too large". The construction can be applied to every Banach space containing $c_0$ and having a countable system of norming functionals, in particular, to separable Banach spaces containing $c_0$. We also provide some geometric properties of the norms we have constructed.

Some geometric properties of Read's space

We study geometric properties of the Banach space $\mathcal{R}$ constructed recently by C.~Read (arXiv 1307.7958) which does not contain proximinal subspaces of finite codimension greater than or equal to two. Concretely, we show that the bidual of $\mathcal{R}$ is strictly convex, that the norm of the dual of $\mathcal{R}$ is rough, and that $\mathcal{R}$ is weakly locally uniformly rotund (but it is not locally uniformly rotund). Apart of the own interest of the results, they provide a simplification of the proof by M.~Rmoutil (J.\ Funct.\ Anal.\ 272 (2017), 918--928) that the set of norm-attaining functionals over $\mathcal{R}$ does not contain any linear subspace of dimension greater than or equal to two. Note that if a Banach space $X$ contains proximinal subspaces of finite codimension at least two, then the set of norm-attaining functionals over $X$ contain two-dimensional linear subspaces of $X^*$. Our results also provides positive answer to the questions of whether the dual of $\mathcal{R}$ is smooth and of whether $\mathcal{R}$ is weakly locally uniformly rotund (J.\ Funct.\ Anal.\ 272 (2017), 918--928). Finally, we present a renorming of Read's space which is smooth, whose dual is smooth, and such that its set of norm-attaining functionals does not contain any linear subspace of dimension greater than or equal to two, so the renormed space does not contain proximinal subspaces of finite codimension greater than or equal to two.
