Spear operators between Banach spaces

The aim of this manuscript is to study \emph{spear operators}: bounded linear operators $G$ between Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ satisfying that for every other bounded linear operator $T:X\longrightarrow Y$ there exists a modulus-one scalar $ω$ such that $$ \|G + ω\,T\|=1+ \|T\|. $$ To this end, we introduce two related properties, one weaker called the alternative Daugavet property (if rank-one operators $T$ satisfy the requirements), and one stronger called lushness, and we develop a complete theory about the relations between these three properties. To do this, the concepts of spear vector and spear set play an important role. Further, we provide with many examples among classical spaces, being one of them the lushness of the Fourier transform on $L_1$. We also study the relation of these properties with the Radon-Nikodým property, with Asplund spaces, with the duality, and we provide some stability results. Further, we present some isometric and isomorphic consequences of these properties as, for instance, that $\ell_1$ is contained in the dual of the domain of every real operator with infinite rank and the alternative Daugavet property, and that these three concepts behave badly with smoothness and rotundity. Finally, we study Lipschitz spear operators (that is, those Lipschitz operators satisfying the Lipschitz version of the equation above) and prove that (linear) lush operators are Lipschitz spear operators.

On a second numerical index for Banach spaces

We introduce a second numerical index for real Banach spaces with non-trivial Lie algebra, as the best constant of equivalence between the numerical radius and the quotient of the operator norm modulo the Lie algebra. We present a number of examples and results concerning absolute sums, duality, vector-valued function spaces\ldots which show that, in many cases, the behaviour of this second numerical index differs from the one of the classical numerical index. As main results, we prove that Hilbert spaces have second numerical index one and that they are the only spaces with this property among the class of Banach spaces with one-unconditional basis and non-trivial Lie algebra. Besides, an application to the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for numerical radius is given.

The Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for compact operators

We study the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property (BPBp for short) for compact operators. We present some abstract techniques which allows to carry the BPBp for compact operators from sequence spaces to function spaces. As main applications, we prove the following results. Let $X$, $Y$ be Banach spaces. If $(c_0,Y)$ has the BPBp for compact operators, then so do $(C_0(L),Y)$ for every locally compact Hausdorff topological space $L$ and $(X,Y)$ whenever $X^*$ is isometrically isomorphic to $\ell_1$. If $X^*$ has the Radon-Nikodým property and $(\ell_1(X),Y)$ has the BPBp for compact operators, then so does $(L_1(μ,X),Y)$ for every positive measure $μ$; as a consequence, $(L_1(μ,X),Y)$ has the the BPBp for compact operators when $X$ and $Y$ are finite-dimensional or $Y$ is a Hilbert space and $X=c_0$ or $X=L_p(ν)$ for any positive measure $ν$ and $1< p< \infty$. For $1\leqslant p <\infty$, if $(X,\ell_p(Y))$ has the BPBp for compact operators, then so does $(X,L_p(μ,Y))$ for every positive measure $μ$ such that $L_1(μ)$ is infinite-dimensional. If $(X,Y)$ has the BPBp for compact operators, then so do $(X,L_\infty(μ,Y))$ for every $σ$-finite positive measure $μ$ and $(X,C(K,Y))$ for every compact Hausdorff topological space $K$.

Norm attaining Lipschitz functionals

We prove that for a given Banach space $X$, the subset of norm attaining Lipschitz functionals in $\mathrm{Lip}_0(X)$ is weakly dense but not strongly dense. Then we introduce a weaker concept of directional norm attainment and demonstrate that for a uniformly convex $X$ the set of directionally norm attaining Lipschitz functionals is strongly dense in $\mathrm{Lip}_0(X)$ and, moreover, that an analogue of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorem is valid.

The version for compact operators of Lindenstrauss properties A and B

It has been very recently discovered that there are compact linear operators between Banach spaces which cannot be approximated by norm attaining operators. The aim of this expository paper is to give an overview of those examples and also of sufficient conditions ensuring that compact linear operators can be approximated by norm attaining operators. To do so, we introduce the analogues for compact operators of Lindenstrauss properties A and B.

On different definitions of numerical range

We study the relation between the intrinsic and the spatial numerical ranges with the recently introduced "approximated" spatial numerical range. As main result, we show that the intrinsic numerical range always coincides with the convex hull of the approximated spatial numerical range. Besides, we show sufficient conditions and necessary conditions to assure that the approximated spatial numerical range coincides with the closure of the spatial numerical range.

Two refinements of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás modulus

Extending the celebrated result by Bishop and Phelps that the set of norm attaining functionals is always dense in the topological dual of a Banach space, Bollobás proved the nowadays known as the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorem, which allows to approximate at the same time a functional and a vector in which it almost attains the norm. Very recently, two Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás moduli of a Banach space have been introduced [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 412 (2014), 697--719] to measure, for a given Banach space, what is the best possible Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorem in this space. In this paper we present two refinements of the results of that paper. On the one hand, we get a sharp general estimation of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás modulus as a function of the norms of the point and the functional, and we also calculate it in some examples, including Hilbert spaces. On the other hand, we relate the modulus of uniform non-squareness with the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás modulus obtaining, in particular, a simpler and quantitative proof of the fact that a uniformly non-square Banach space cannot have the maximum value of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás modulus.

The Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás version of Lindenstrauss properties A and B

We study a Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás version of Lindenstrauss properties A and B. For domain spaces, we study Banach spaces $X$ such that $(X,Y)$ has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property (BPBp) for every Banach space $Y$. We show that in this case, there exists a universal function $η_X(\varepsilon)$ such that for every $Y$, the pair $(X,Y)$ has the BPBp with this function. This allows us to prove some necessary isometric conditions for $X$ to have the property. We also prove that if $X$ has this property in every equivalent norm, then $X$ is one-dimensional. For range spaces, we study Banach spaces $Y$ such that $(X,Y)$ has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for every Banach space $X$. In this case, we show that there is a universal function $η_Y(\varepsilon)$ such that for every $X$, the pair $(X,Y)$ has the BPBp with this function. This implies that this property of $Y$ is strictly stronger than Lindenstrauss property B. The main tool to get these results is the study of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for $c_0$-, $\ell_1$- and $\ell_\infty$-sums of Banach spaces.

Norm-attaining compact operators

We show examples of compact linear operators between Banach spaces which cannot be approximated by norm attaining operators. This is the negative answer to an open question posed in the 1970's. Actually, any strictly convex Banach space failing the approximation property serves as the range space. On the other hand, there are examples in which the domain space has a Schauder basis.

On the geometry of von Neumann algebra preduals

Let $M$ be a von Neumann algebra and let $M_\star$ be its (unique) predual. We study when for every $φ\in M_\star$ there exists $ψ\in M_\star$ solving the equation $\|φ\pm ψ\|=\|φ\|=\|ψ\|$. This is the case when $M$ does not contain type I nor type III$_1$ factors as direct summands and it is false at least for the unique hyperfinite type III$_1$ factor. We also characterize this property in terms of the existence of centrally symmetric curves in the unit sphere of $M_\star$ of length 4. An approximate result valid for all diffuse von Neumann algebras allows to show that the equation has solution for every element in the ultraproduct of preduals of diffuse von Neumann algebras and, in particular, the dual von Neumann algebra of such ultraproduct is diffuse. This shows that the Daugavet property and the uniform Daugavet property are equivalent for preduals of von Neumann algebras.

The Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for operators between spaces of continuous functions

We show that the space of bounded and linear operators between spaces of continuous functions on compact Hausdorff topological spaces has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property. A similar result is also proved for the class of compact operators from the space of continuous functions vanishing at infinity on a locally compact and Hausdorff topological space into a uniformly convex space, and for the class of compact operators from a Banach space into a predual of an $L_1$-space.

The Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás moduli of a Banach space

We introduce two Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás moduli which measure, for a given Banach space, what is the best possible Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorem in this space. We show that there is a common upper bound for these moduli for all Banach spaces and we present an example showing that this bound is sharp. We prove the continuity of these moduli and an inequality with respect to duality. We calculate the two moduli for Hilbert spaces and also present many examples for which the moduli have the maximum possible value (among them, there are $C(K)$ spaces and $L_1(μ)$ spaces). Finally, we show that if a Banach space has the maximum possible value of any of the moduli, then it contains almost isometric copies of the real space $\ell_\infty^{(2)}$ and present an example showing that this condition is not sufficient.

Lushness, numerical index 1 and the Daugavet property in rearrangement invariant spaces

We show that for spaces with 1-unconditional bases lushness, the alternative Daugavet property and numerical index~1 are equivalent. In the class of rearrangement invariant (r.i.)\ sequence spaces the only examples of spaces with these properties are $c_0$, $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$. The only lush r.i.\ separable function space on $[0,1]$ is $L_1[0,1]$; the same space is the only r.i.\ separable function space on $[0,1]$ with the Daugavet property over the reals.

On the numerical radius of operators in Lebesgue spaces

We show that the absolute numerical index of the space $L_p(μ)$ is $p^{-1/p} q^{-1/q}$ (where $1/p+1/q=1$). In other words, we prove that $$ \sup\{\int |x|^{p-1}|Tx|\, dμ\, : \ x\in L_p(μ),\,\|x\|_p=1\} \,\geq \,p^{-\frac{1}{p}} q^{-\frac{1}{q}}\,\|T\| $$ for every $T\in \mathcal{L}(L_p(μ))$ and that this inequality is the best possible when the dimension of $L_p(μ)$ is greater than one. We also give lower bounds for the best constant of equivalence between the numerical radius and the operator norm in $L_p(μ)$ for atomless $μ$ when restricting to rank-one operators or narrow operators.
