Isometries on extremely non-complex Banach spaces

Given a separable Banach space $E$, we construct an extremely non-complex Banach space (i.e. a space satisfying that $\|Id + T^2\|=1+\|T^2\|$ for every bounded linear operator $T$ on it) whose dual contains $E^*$ as an $L$-summand. We also study surjective isometries on extremely non-complex Banach spaces and construct an example of a real Banach space whose group of surjective isometries reduces to $\pm Id$, but the group of surjective isometries of its dual contains the group of isometries of a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space as a subgroup.

On the numerical index of real $L_p(μ)$-spaces

We give a lower bound for the numerical index of the real space $L_p(μ)$ showing, in particular, that it is non-zero for $p\neq 2$. In other words, it is shown that for every bounded linear operator $T$ on the real space $L_p(μ)$, one has $$ \sup{\Bigl|\int |x|^{p-1}\sign(x) T x dμ\Bigr| : x\in L_p(μ), \|x\|=1} \geq \frac{M_p}{12\e}\|T\| $$ where $M_p=\max_{t\in[0,1]}\frac{|t^{p-1}-t|}{1+t^p}>0$ for every $p\neq 2$. It is also shown that for every bounded linear operator $T$ on the real space $L_p(μ)$, one has $$ \sup{\int |x|^{p-1}|Tx| dμ: x\in L_p(μ), \|x\|=1} \geq \frac{1}{2\e}\|T\|. $$

Slicely Countably Determined Banach spaces

We introduce the class of slicely countably determined Banach spaces which contains in particular all spaces with the RNP and all spaces without copies of $\ell_1$. We present many examples and several properties of this class. We give some applications to Banach spaces with the Daugavet and the alternative Daugavet properties, lush spaces and Banach spaces with numerical index 1. In particular, we show that the dual of a real infinite-dimensional Banach with the alternative Daugavet property contains $\ell_1$ and that operators which do not fix copies of $\ell_1$ on a space with the alternative Daugavet property satisfy the alternative Daugavet equation.

Convexity and smoothness of Banach spaces with numerical index one

We show that a Banach space with numerical index one cannot enjoy good convexity or smoothness properties unless it is one-dimensional. For instance, it has no WLUR points in its unit ball, its norm is not Frechet smooth and its dual norm is neither smooth nor strictly convex. Actually, these results also hold if the space has the (strictly weaker) alternative Daugavet property. We construct a (non-complete) strictly convex predual of an infinite-dimensional $L_1$ space (which satisfies a property called lushness which implies numerical index~1). On the other hand, we show that a lush real Banach space is neither strictly convex nor smooth, unless it is one-dimensional. In particular, if a subspace $X$ of the real space $C[0,1]$ is smooth or strictly convex, then $C[0,1]/X$ contains a copy of $C[0,1]$. Finally, we prove that the dual of any lush infinite-dimensional real space contains a copy of $\ell_1$.

Extremely non-complex C(K) spaces

We show that there exist infinite-dimensional extremely non-complex Banach spaces, i.e. spaces $X$ such that the norm equality $\|Id + T^2\|=1 + \|T^2\|$ holds for every bounded linear operator $T:X\longrightarrow X$. This answers in the positive Question 4.11 of [Kadets, Martin, Meri, Norm equalities for operators, \emph{Indiana U. Math. J.} \textbf{56} (2007), 2385--2411]. More concretely, we show that this is the case of some $C(K)$ spaces with few operators constructed in [Koszmider, Banach spaces of continuous functions with few operators, \emph{Math. Ann.} \textbf{330} (2004), 151--183] and [Plebanek, A construction of a Banach space $C(K)$ with few operators, \emph{Topology Appl.} \textbf{143} (2004), 217--239]. We also construct compact spaces $K_1$ and $K_2$ such that $C(K_1)$ and $C(K_2)$ are extremely non-complex, $C(K_1)$ contains a complemented copy of $C(2^ω)$ and $C(K_2)$ contains a (1-complemented) isometric copy of $\ell_\infty$.

The group of isometries of a Banach space and duality

We construct an example of a real Banach space whose group of surjective isometries has no uniformly continuous one-parameter semigroups, but the group of surjective isometries of its dual contains infinitely many of them. Other examples concerning numerical index, hermitian operators and dissipative operators are also shown.

Norm equalities for operators

A Banach space $X$ has the Daugavet property if the Daugavet equation $\|\Id + T\|= 1 + \|T\|$ holds for every rank-one operator $T:X \longrightarrow X$. We show that the most natural attempts to introduce new properties by considering other norm equalities for operators (like $\|g(T)\|=f(\|T\|)$ for some functions $f$ and $g$) lead in fact to the Daugavet property of the space. On the other hand there are equations (for example $\|\Id + T\|= \|\Id - T\|$) that lead to new, strictly weaker properties of Banach spaces.

Numerical index and duality

We present an example of a Banach space whose numerical index is strictly greater than the numerical index of its dual, giving a negative answer to a question which has been latent since the beginning of the seventies. We also show a particular case in which the numerical index of the space and the one of its dual coincide.

On the intrinsic and the spatial numerical range

For a bounded function $f$ from the unit sphere of a closed subspace $X$ of a Banach space $Y$, we study when the closed convex hull of its spatial numerical range $W(f)$ is equal to its intrinsic numerical range $V(f)$. We show that for every infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$ there is a superspace $Y$ and a bounded linear operator $T:X\longrightarrow Y$ such that $\bar{co} W(T)\neq V(T)$. We also show that, up to renormig, for every non-reflexive Banach space $Y$, one can find a closed subspace $X$ and a bounded linear operator $T\in L(X,Y)$ such that $\bar{co} W(T)\neq V(T)$. Finally, we introduce a sufficient condition for the closed convex hull of the spatial numerical range to be equal to the intrinsic numerical range, which we call the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobas property, and which is weaker than the uniform smoothness and the finite-dimensionality. We characterize strong subdifferentiability and uniform smoothness in terms of this property.

The Daugavet property of $C^*$-algebras, $JB^*$-triples, and of their isometric preduals

A Banach space $X$ is said to have the Daugavet property if every rank-one operator $T:X\longrightarrow X$ satisfies $\|Id + T\| = 1 + \|T\|$. We give geometric characterizations of this property in the settings of $C^*$-algebras, $JB^*$-triples and their isometric preduals. We also show that, in these settings, the Daugavet property passes to ultrapowers, and thus, it is equivalent to an stronger property called the uniform Daugavet property.

The Alternative Daugavet Property of $C^*$-algebras and $JB^*$-triples

A Banach space $X$ is said to have the alternative Daugavet property if for every (bounded and linear) rank-one operator $T:X\longrightarrow X$ there exists a modulus one scalar $ω$ such that $\|Id + ωT\|= 1 + \|T\|$. We give geometric characterizations of this property in the setting of $C^*$-algebras, $JB^*$-triples and their isometric preduals.
