Entropy Dilution Mechanism and Dark Matter Isocurvature

We explore dark matter isocurvature perturbations in cosmological scenarios with entropy dilution resulting from a late decaying massive state that temporarily dominates the universe before big-bang nucleosynthesis. The dilution mechanism features a non-standard scaling window of the radiation energy density, which allows for a new way to derive the entropy dilution factor. On super-horizon scales, the same scaling window also governs the evolution of isocurvature, and we present an analytic approach to solving the perturbation equations. We characterize various regimes where dark matter isocurvature survives and is subject to constraints from the cosmic microwave background observations. For cosmologically viable scenarios, we find that dark matter is dominantly produced from its dilutor decay, and the isocurvature is suppressed by the entropy dilution factor to the $4/3$ power. Our work demonstrates the complementarity between isocurvature and collisionless damping of dark matter as powerful probes of the entropy dilution mechanism.

PT2GWFinder: A Package for Cosmological First-Order Phase Transitions and Gravitational Waves

The detection of gravitational waves from binary black hole and neutron star mergers by ground-based interferometers, as well as the evidence for a gravitational wave background from pulsar timing array experiments, has marked a new era in astrophysics and cosmology. These experiments also have great potential for discovering new physics through gravitational wave detection. One of the most motivated sources of gravitational waves that can be realized only within a beyond-the-Standard-Model framework is first-order phase transitions. In this work we release PT2GWFinder, a Mathematica package designed to compute phase transition parameters and the gravitational wave power spectrum for an \textit{arbitrary scalar theory exhibiting a first-order phase transition, in scenarios where a single scalar acquires a vacuum expectation value. PT2GWFinder performs the phase tracing, computes the bounce profile and action using FindBounce, calculates the relevant temperatures and phase transition parameters, and finally evaluates the gravitational wave spectrum. Additionally, it offers a user-friendly interface with DRalgo, which enables the computation of the dimensionally reduced effective potential in the high-temperature regime. This work includes a user manual and two models that demonstrate the capability and performance of PT2GWFinder. As a supplement, for one of these models we obtain the bounce solution and action analytically in the thin-wall approximation and demonstrate excellent agreement with the numerical approach.

Blast-frozen Dark Matter and Modulated Density Perturbations

First-order phase transitions (FOPT) are ubiquitous in beyond the Standard Model physics and leave distinctive echoes in the history of early universe. We consider a FOPT serving the well-motivated role of dark matter mass generation and present {\it blast-frozen dark matter} (BFDM), which transitions from radiation to non-relativistic relic in a period much shorter than the corresponding Hubble time. Its cosmological imprint are strong oscillations in the dark matter density perturbations that seed structure formation on large and small scales. For a FOPT occurring not long before the matter-radiation equality, next generation cosmological surveys bear a strong potential to discover BFDM and in turn establish the origin of dark matter mass.

Long-lived Left-Right signals at the FCC-ee

We give an extensive discussion of the displaced signals of heavy Majorana neutrino production at future electron-positron colliders operating at various proposed energies in the context of the Left-Right symmetric model. A comprehensive collection of channels is taken into account, ranging from those featuring $W$ and $W_R$ mediation to those induced by scalar mixing and gauge/scalar boson fusion, with connections to the mechanism of neutrino mass origin. The emerging signatures feature possibly multiple displaced heavy neutrinos that are in some cases accompanied by prompt activity and forward leptons. We derive the corresponding total production rates and differential distributions, which allow us to differentiate the channels and have analytical estimates of the signal yield. We then develop realistic estimates of the selection efficiencies using a dedicated vertexing algorithm which establishes the displaced decay positions and supplies a reliable proxy for reconstructing the full four-momenta of long-lived particles. This allows to determine the realistic reaches in the parameter space of the Left-Right symmetric model across the various channels, and we show that these can strongly surpass the LHC ones, demonstrating that future lepton colliders are sensitive to left-right symmetry breaking scales in the deep multi-TeV regime.

Beautiful Majorana Higgses at Colliders

We investigate a novel collider signature within the minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model, featuring a Higgs sector composed of a bi-doublet and two triplets. Our study focuses on a region of the parameter space where the $SU(2)_R$ charged gauge boson $W_R$ lies in the multi-TeV regime (3-100 TeV) and the additional Higgs states play a significant role. In this scenario, a heavy neutral Higgs boson $Δ$ with a dominant $SU(2)_R$ triplet component can be produced in association with either a Standard Model Higgs boson or a massive weak boson. The subsequent decay of the heavy Higgs into Majorana neutrinos $N$ results in displaced lepton signatures, providing a striking manifestation of lepton number violation. Additionally, we explore how the production of $b$-jets in these processes can enhance hadron-collider sensitivity to such signals. A particularly compelling channel, $pp \to b \bar b NN$, offers the exciting possibility of simultaneously probing the spontaneous mass origin of both Dirac fermions and Majorana states. Based on an optimised event selection strategy and state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations, we outline the expected reach at the HL-LHC and future colliders. Our findings demonstrate that this channel probes a region of parameter space where the neutral Higgs triplet and heavy neutrino masses are relatively light ($m_Δ\lesssim 250$ GeV, $m_N \lesssim 80$ GeV), indirectly constraining the $W_R$ boson to the deep multi-TeV domain, with sensitivity extending up to 70-80 TeV, effectively turning the LHC into a precision machine.

False Vacuum Decay Rate From Thin To Thick Walls

We consider a single real scalar field in flat spacetime with a polynomial potential up to $ϕ^4$, that has a local minimum, the false vacuum, and a deeper global minimum, the true vacuum. When the vacua are almost degenerate we are in the thin wall regime, while as their difference in potential energy increases, we approach the thick wall regime. We give explicit simple formulae for the decay rate of the false vacuum in 3 and 4 spacetime dimensions. Our results include a careful treatment both of the bounce action, which enters at the exponent of the decay rate, and of the functional determinant at one loop, which determines the prefactor. The bounce action is computed analytically as an expansion in the thin wall parameter in generic $D$ dimensions. We find that truncating such an expansion at second order we obtain a remarkably accurate bounce action also deep into thick wall regimes. We calculate the functional determinant numerically in 3 and 4 dimensions and fit the results with simple polynomials of the same thin wall parameter. This allows us to write the complete one-loop decay rate as a compact expression, which works accurately from thin to thick wall regimes.

Functional Determinants for False Vacuum Decay

We derive simple expressions to regularise functional determinants from fluctuations of fields with spin 0, 1/2, and 1. These are important for the precise dimensionful determination of false vacuum decay rates. We work in $D = 4$ Euclidean dimensions and use familiar Feynman diagrammatic techniques with a double expansion in interactions and masses, together with dimensional regularisation in momentum space. We Fourier transform to coordinate space and end up with a simple regularisation prescription in terms of single integrals over the Euclidean radius of field-dependent masses and their derivatives. Our results apply to models with an arbitrary scalar potential and with any number of scalars, fermions, gauge bosons and associated ghosts. We exemplify this approach on the Standard Model with a streamlined calculation of the renormalisation and isolation of divergences in fluctuation determinants.

Analytic thin wall false vacuum decay rate

We derive a closed-form false vacuum decay rate at one loop in the thin wall limit, where the true and false vacua are nearly degenerate. We obtain the bounce configuration in $D$ dimensions, together with the Euclidean action with a higher order correction, counter-terms and renormalization group running. We extract the functional determinant via the Gel'fand-Yaglom theorem for low and generic orbital multipoles. The negative and zero eigenvalues appear for low multipoles and the translational zeroes are removed. We compute the fluctuations for generic multipoles, multiply and regulate the orbital modes. We find an explicit finite renormalized decay rate in $D = 3, 4$ and give a closed-form expression for the finite functional determinant in any dimension.

Hadron Collider Signatures of Lepton Number Violation in the Type II Seesaw Model

We examine the prospect of observing genuine lepton number violating (LNV) signals at hadron colliders in the context of the Type II seesaw mechanism. The model features smoking gun signals involving same-sign di-leptons and jets that may be the primary observable channel in certain regions of the parameter space. The flavour composition of final-state charged leptons in the minimal model is related to the origin of neutrino masses and is correlated with other rare processes, such as neutrinoless double beta decay. We review existing collider limits and provide sensitivity estimates from LNV signals at upcoming runs of the LHC, for zero and non-zero mass splittings between the scalar triplet components.

Enabling Precise Predictions for Left-Right Symmetry at Colliders

We investigate the structure of the minimal Left-Right symmetric model that enables precise predictions in the gauge, scalar and neutrino sector. We revisit the complete set of mass spectra and mixings for the charged and neutral gauge bosons, would-be-Goldstones and gauge fixing, together with the ghost Lagrangian. In the scalar sector, we analytically re-derive all the massive states with mixings and devise a non-trivial physical input scheme, expressing the model couplings in terms of masses and mixing angles. Fermion couplings are also determined in closed form, including the Dirac mixing in the neutrino sector, evaluated explicitly using the Cayley-Hamilton theorem. These analytic developments are implemented in a comprehensive FeynRules model file. We calculate the one loop QCD corrections and provide a complete UFO file for NLO studies, demonstrated on relevant hadron-collider benchmarks. We provide various restricted variants of the model file with different gauges, massless states, neutrino hierarchies and parity violating $g_L \neq g_R$ gauge couplings.

Revising the full one-loop gauge prefactor in electroweak vacuum stability

We revisit the decay rate of the electroweak vacuum in the Standard Model with the full one-loop prefactor. We focus on the gauge degrees of freedom and derive the degeneracy factors appearing in the functional determinant using group theoretical arguments. Our treatment shows that the transverse modes were previously overcounted, so we revise the calculation of that part of the prefactor. The new result modifies the gauge fields' contribution by $6\%$ and slightly decreases the previously predicted lifetime of the electroweak vacuum, which remains much longer than the age of the universe. Our discussion of the transverse mode degeneracy applies to any calculation of functional determinants involving gauge fields in four dimensions.

Anatomy of Diluted Dark Matter in the Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model

Temporary matter domination and late entropy dilution, injected by a "long-lived" particle in the early universe, serves as a standard mechanism for yielding the correct dark matter relic density. We recently pointed out the cosmological significance of diluting particle's partial decay into dark matter. When repopulated in such a way, dark matter carries higher momentum than its thermal counterpart, resulting in a suppression of the linear matter power spectrum that is constrained by the large scale structure observations. In this work, we study the impact of such constraints on the minimal left-right symmetric model that accounts for the origin of neutrino mass. We map out a systematic anatomy of possible dilution scenarios with viable parameter spaces, allowed by cosmology and various astrophysical and terrestrial constraints. We show that to accommodate the observed dark matter relic abundance the spontaneous left-right symmetry breaking scale must be above PeV and cosmology will continue to provide the most sensitive probes of it. In case the dilutor is one of the heavier right-handed neutrinos, it can be much lighter and lie near the electroweak scale.

Left-Right Symmetry at FCC-hh

We study the production of right-handed $W_R$ bosons and heavy neutrinos $N$ at a future 100 TeV high energy hadron collider in the context of Left-Right symmetry, including the effects of $W_L-W_R$ gauge-boson mixing. We estimate the collider reach for up to 3/ab integrated luminosity using a multi-binned sensitivity measure. In the Keung-Senjanović and missing energy channels, the 3$σ$ sensitivity extends up to $M_{W_R}=35$ and 37 TeV, respectively. We further clarify the interplay between the missing energy channel and the (expected) limits from neutrinoless double beta decay searches, Big Bang nucleosynthesis and dark matter.

Analytic false-vacuum decay rate in the thin-wall approximation

We present a fully analytical calculation of the false vacuum decay rate for a self-interacting scalar field in the thin-wall approximation. We obtain the bounce solution, together with the Euclidean action, counter-terms and renormalization group running, and we extract the functional determinant via the Gel'fand-Yaglom theorem. Our procedure is valid for a generic spacetime dimension $D$, and we provide an explicit finite renormalized decay rate in $D=3,4$.

Dark Matter Dilution Mechanism through the Lens of Large Scale Structure

Entropy production is a necessary ingredient for addressing the over-population of thermal relics. It is widely employed in particle physics models for explaining the origin of dark matter. A long-lived particle that decays to the known particles, while dominating the universe, plays the role of the dilutor. We point out the impact of its partial decay to dark matter on the primordial matter power spectrum. For the first time, we derive a stringent limit on the branching ratio of the dilutor to dark matter from large scale structure observation using the SDSS data. This offers a novel tool for testing models with a dark matter dilution mechanism. We apply it to the left-right symmetric model and show that it firmly excludes a large portion of parameter space for right-handed neutrino warm dark matter.

Exact one-loop false vacuum decay rate

We discuss an exact false vacuum decay rate at one loop for a real and complex scalar field in a quartic-quartic potential with two tree-level minima. The bounce solution is used to compute the functional determinant from both fluctuations. We obtain the finite product of eigenvalues and remove translational zero modes. The orbital modes are regularized with the zeta function and we end up with a complete renormalized decay rate. We derive simple expansions in the thin and thick wall limits and determine their validity.

FindBounce: package for multi-field bounce actions

We are launching FindBounce, a Mathematica package for the evaluation of the Euclidean bounce action that enters the decay rate of metastable states in quantum and thermal field theories. It is based on the idea of polygonal bounces, which is a semi-analytical approach to solving the bounce equation by discretizing the potential into piecewise linear segments. This allows for a fast and robust evaluation of arbitrary potentials with specified precision and any number of scalar fields. Time cost grows linearly with the number of fields and/or the number of segments. Computation with 20 fields takes $\sim 2$ seconds with $0.5\%$ accuracy of the action. The FindBounce function is simple to use with the native Mathematica look and feel, it is easy to install, and comes with detailed documentation and physical examples, such as the calculation of the nucleation temperature. We also provide timing benchmarks with comparisons to existing tools, where applicable.

Doubly Charged Higgs Boson Production at Hadron Colliders

We present a systematic comparison of doubly charged Higgs boson production mechanisms at hadron colliders in the context of the Type II Seesaw model, emphasizing the importance of higher-order corrections and subdominant channels. We consider the Drell-Yan channel at next-to-leading order in QCD, photon fusion at leading order, gluon fusion with resummation of threshold logarithms up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, and same-sign weak boson fusion at next-to-leading order in QCD. For Drell-Yan processes, we study the impact of a static jet veto at next-to-leading order matched to the resummation of jet veto scale logarithms at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. For the photon fusion channel, the dependence on modeling photon parton distribution functions is definitively assessed. To model vector boson fusion at next-to-leading order, we include all interfering topologies at $\mathcal{O}(α^4)$ and propose a method for introducing generator-level cuts within the MC@NLO formalism. Our results are obtained using a Monte Carlo tool chain linking the \textsc{FeynRules}, \textsc{NloCT} and \textsc{MadGraph5\_aMC@NLO} programs and have necessitated the development of new, publicly available, Universal FeynRules Output libraries that encode the interactions between the Type II Seesaw scalars and Standard Model particles. Libraries are compatible with both the normal and inverted ordering of Majorana neutrino masses.
