A field theoretic operator model and Cowen-Douglas class

In resonance to a recent geometric framework proposed by Douglas and Yang, a functional model for certain linear bounded operators with rank-one self-commutator acting on a Hilbert space is developed. By taking advantage of the refined existing theory of the principal function of a hyponormal operator we transfer the whole action outside the spectrum, on the resolvent of the underlying operator, localized at a distinguished vector. The whole construction turns out to rely on an elementary algebra body involving analytic multipliers and Cauchy transforms. A natural field theory interpretation of the resulting resolvent functional model is proposed.

Data-driven spectral analysis of the Koopman operator

Starting from measured data, we develop a method to compute the fine structure of the spectrum of the Koopman operator with rigorous convergence guarantees. The method is based on the observation that, in the measure-preserving ergodic setting, the moments of the spectral measure associated to a given observable are computable from a single trajectory of this observable. Having finitely many moments available, we use the classical Christoffel-Darboux kernel to separate the atomic and absolutely continuous parts of the spectrum, supported by convergence guarantees as the number of moments tends to infinity. In addition, we propose a technique to detect the singular continuous part of the spectrum as well as two methods to approximate the spectral measure with guaranteed convergence in the weak topology, irrespective of whether the singular continuous part is present or not. The proposed method is simple to implement and readily applicable to large-scale systems since the computational complexity is dominated by inverting an $N\times N$ Hermitian positive-definite Toeplitz matrix, where $N$ is the number of moments, for which efficient and numerically stable algorithms exist; in particular, the complexity of the approach is independent of the dimension of the underlying state-space. We also show how to compute, from measured data, the spectral projection on a given segment of the unit circle, allowing us to obtain a finite-dimensional approximation of the operator that explicitly takes into account the point and continuous parts of the spectrum. Finally, we describe a relationship between the proposed method and the so-called Hankel Dynamic Mode Decomposition, providing new insights into the behavior of the eigenvalues of the Hankel DMD operator. A number of numerical examples illustrate the approach, including a study of the spectrum of the lid-driven two-dimensional cavity flow.

Identification of an algebraic domain in two dimensions from a finite number of its generalized polarization tensors

This paper aims at studying how finitely many generalized polarization tensors of an algebraic domain can be used to determine its shape. Precisely, given a planar set with real algebraic boundary, it is shown that the minimal polynomial with real coefficients vanishing on the boundary can be identified as the generator of a one dimensional kernel of a matrix whose entries are obtained from a finite number of generalized polarization tensors. The size of the matrix depends polynomially on the degree of the boundary of the algebraic domain. The density with respect to Hausdorff distance of algebraic domains among all bounded domains invites to extend via approximation our reconstruction procedure beyond its natural context. Based on this, a new algorithm for shape recognition/classification is proposed with some strong hints about its efficiency.

Positive Functionals and Hessenberg Matrices

Not every positive functional defined on bi-variate polynomials of a prescribed degree bound is represented by the integration against a positive measure. We isolate a couple of conditions filling this gap, either by restricting the class of polynomials to harmonic ones, or imposing the vanishing of a defect indicator. Both criteria offer constructive cubature formulas and they are obtained via well known matrix analysis techniques involving either the dilation of a contractive matrix to a unitary one or the specific structure of the Hessenberg matrix associated to the multiplier by the underlying complex variable.

Simultaneous kernels of matrix Hadamard powers

In previous work [Adv. Math. 298, pp. 325-368, 2016], the structure of the simultaneous kernels of Hadamard powers of any positive semidefinite matrix were described. Key ingredients in the proof included a novel stratification of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices and a well-known theorem of Hershkowitz, Neumann, and Schneider, which classifies the Hermitian positive semidefinite matrices whose entries are $0$ or $1$ in modulus. In this paper, we show that each of these results extends to a larger class of matrices which we term $3$-PMP (principal minor positive).

Complex symmetric differential operators on Fock space

The space of entire functions which are integrable with respect to the Gaussian weight, known also as the Fock space, is one of the preferred functional Hilbert spaces for modelling and experimenting harmonic analysis, quantum mechanics or spectral analysis phenomena. This space of entire functions carries a three parameter family of canonical isometric involutions. We characterize the linear differential operators acting on Fock space which are complex symmetric with respect to these conjugations. In parallel, as a basis of comparison, we discuss the structure of self-adjoint linear differential operators. The computation of the point spectrum of some of these operators is carried out in detail.

Line bundles defined by the Schwarz function

Cauchy and exponential transforms are characterized, and constructed, as canonical holomorphic sections of certain line bundles on the Riemann sphere defined in terms of the Schwarz function. A well known natural connection between Schwarz reflection and line bundles defined on the Schottky double of a planar domain is briefly discussed in the same context.

Singular values of weighted composition operators and second quantization

We study a semigroup of weighted composition operators on the Hardy space of the disk $H^2(\mathbb{D})$, and more generally on the Hardy space $H^2(U)$ attached to a simply connected domain $U$ with smooth boundary. Motivated by conformal field theory, we establish bounds on the singular values (approximation numbers) of these weighted composition operators. As a byproduct we obtain estimates on the singular values of the restriction operator (embedding operator) $H^2(V) \to H^2(U)$ when $U \subset V$ and the boundary of $U$ touches that of $V$. Moreover, using the connection between the weighted composition operators and restriction operators, we show that these operators exhibit an analog of the Fisher-Micchelli phenomenon for non-compact operators.

Schur polynomials and matrix positivity preservers

A classical result by Schoenberg (1942) identifies all real-valued functions that preserve positive semidefiniteness (psd) when applied entrywise to matrices of arbitrary dimension. Schoenberg's work has continued to attract significant interest, including renewed recent attention due to applications in high-dimensional statistics. However, despite a great deal of effort in the area, an effective characterization of entrywise functions preserving positivity in a fixed dimension remains elusive to date. As a first step, we characterize new classes of polynomials preserving positivity in fixed dimension. The proof of our main result is representation theoretic, and employs Schur polynomials. An alternate, variational approach also leads to several interesting consequences including (a) a hitherto unexplored Schubert cell-type stratification of the cone of psd matrices, (b) new connections between generalized Rayleigh quotients of Hadamard powers and Schur polynomials, and (c) a description of the joint kernels of Hadamard powers.

Matrix positivity preservers in fixed dimension. I

A classical theorem proved in 1942 by I.J. Schoenberg describes all real-valued functions that preserve positivity when applied entrywise to positive semidefinite matrices of arbitrary size; such functions are necessarily analytic with non-negative Taylor coefficients. Despite the great deal of interest generated by this theorem, a characterization of functions preserving positivity for matrices of fixed dimension is not known. In this paper, we provide a complete description of polynomials of degree $N$ that preserve positivity when applied entrywise to matrices of dimension $N$. This is the key step for us then to obtain negative lower bounds on the coefficients of analytic functions so that these functions preserve positivity in a prescribed dimension. The proof of the main technical inequality is representation theoretic, and employs the theory of Schur polynomials. Interpreted in the context of linear pencils of matrices, our main results provide a closed-form expression for the lowest critical value, revealing at the same time an unexpected spectral discontinuity phenomenon. Tight linear matrix inequalities for Hadamard powers of matrices and a sharp asymptotic bound for the matrix-cube problem involving Hadamard powers are obtained as applications. Positivity preservers are also naturally interpreted as solutions of a variational inequality involving generalized Rayleigh quotients. This optimization approach leads to a novel description of the simultaneous kernels of Hadamard powers, and a family of stratifications of the cone of positive semidefinite matrices.

Shape reconstruction of nanoparticles from their associated plasmonic resonances

We prove by means of a couple of examples that plasmonic resonances can be used on one hand to classify shapes of nanoparticles with real algebraic boundaries and on the other hand to reconstruct the separation distance between two nanoparticles from measurements of their first collective plasmonic resonances. To this end, we explicitly compute the spectral decompositions of the Neumann-Poincaré operators associated with a class of quadrature domains and two nearly touching disks. Numerical results are included in support of our main findings.

The essential spectrum of the Neumann--Poincare operator on a domain with corners

Exploiting the homogeneous structure of a wedge in the complex plane, we compute the spectrum of the anti-linear Ahlfors-Beurling transform acting on the associated Bergman space. Consequently, the similarity equivalence between the Ahlfors-Beurling transform and the Neumann-Poincare operator provides the spectrum of the latter integral operator on a wedge. A localization technique and conformal mapping lead to the first complete description of the essential spectrum of the Neumann-Poincare operator on a planar domain with corners, with respect to the energy norm of the associated harmonic field.

A relative Grace Theorem for complex polynomials

We study the pullback of the apolarity invariant of complex polynomials in one variable under a polynomial map on the complex plane. As a consequence, we obtain variations of the classical results of Grace and Walsh in which the unit disk, or a circular domain, is replaced by its image under the given polynomial map.

Conditioning moments of singular measures for entropy maximization II: Numerical examples

If moments of singular measures are passed as inputs to the entropy maximization procedure, the optimization algorithm might not terminate. The framework developed in our previous paper demonstrated how input moments of measures, on a broad range of domains, can be conditioned to ensure convergence of the entropy maximization. Here we numerically illustrate the developed framework on simplest possible examples: measures with one-dimensional, bounded supports. Three examples of measures are used to numerically compare approximations obtained through entropy maximization with and without the conditioning step.

Mathematical and physical aspects of complex symmetric operators

Recent advances in the theory of complex symmetric operators are presented and related to current studies in non-hermitian quantum mechanics. The main themes of the survey are: the structure of complex symmetric operators, $C$-selfadjoint extensions of $C$-symmetric unbounded operators, resolvent estimates, reality of spectrum, bases of $C$-orthonormal vectors, and conjugate-linear symmetric operators. The main results are complemented by a variety of natural examples arising in field theory, quantum physics, and complex variables.

An Algebraic Perspective on Multivariate Tight Wavelet Frames. II

Continuing our recent work we study polynomial masks of multivariate tight wavelet frames from two additional and complementary points of view: convexity and system theory. We consider such polynomial masks that are derived by means of the unitary extension principle from a single polynomial. We show that the set of such polynomials is convex and reveal its extremal points as polynomials that satisfy the quadrature mirror filter condition. Multiplicative structure of such polynomial sets allows us to improve the known upper bounds on the number of frame generators derived from box splines. In the univariate and bivariate settings, the polynomial masks of a tight wavelet frame can be interpreted as the transfer function of a conservative multivariate linear system. Recent advances in system theory enable us to develop a more effective method for tight frame constructions. Employing an example by S. W. Drury, we show that for dimension greater than 2 such transfer function representations of the corresponding polynomial masks do not always exist. However, for wavelet masks derived from multivariate polynomials with non-negative coefficients, we determine explicit transfer function representations. We illustrate our results with several examples.

Reconstruction of algebraic-exponential data from moments

Let $G$ be a bounded open subset of Euclidean space with real algebraic boundary $Γ$. Under the assumption that the degree $d$ of $Γ$ is given, and the power moments of the Lebesgue measure on $G$ are known up to order $3d$, we describe an algorithmic procedure for obtaining a polynomial vanishing on $Γ$. The particular case of semi-algebraic sets defined by a single polynomial inequality raises an intriguing question related to the finite determinateness of the full moment sequence. The more general case of a measure with density equal to the exponential of a polynomial is treated in parallel. Our approach relies on Stokes theorem and simple Hankel-type matrix identities.

Quillen property of real algebraic varieties

Let I be a conjugation-invariant ideal in the complex polynomial ring with variables z_1,...,z_n and their conjugates. The ideal I has the Quillen property if every real valued, strictly positive polynomial on the real zero set of I in C^n is a sum of hermitian squares modulo I. We first relate the Quillen property to the archimedean property from real algebra. Using hereditary calculus, we then quantize and show that the Quillen property implies the subnormality of commuting tuples of Hilbert space operators satisfying the identities in I. In the finite rank case we give a complete geometric characterization of when the identities in $I$ imply normality for a commuting tuple of matrices. This geometric interpretation provides simple means to refute Quillen's property of an ideal. We also generalize these notions and results from real algebraic sets to semi-algebraic sets in C^n.
