Spectral bounds for the Neumann-Poincaré operator on planar domains with corners

The boundary double layer potential, or the Neumann-Poincare operator, is studied on the Sobolev space of order 1/2 along the boundary, coinciding with the space of charges giving rise to double layer potentials with finite energy in the whole space. Poincare's program of studying the spectrum of the boundary double layer potential is developed in complete generality, on closed Lipschitz hypersurfaces in Euclidean space. Furthermore, the Neumann-Poincare operator is realized as a singular integral transform bearing similarities to the Beurling-Ahlfors transform in 2D. As an application, bounds for the spectrum of the Neumann-Poincare operator are derived from recent results in quasi-conformal mapping theory, in the case of planar curves with corners.

A real algebra perspective on multivariate tight wavelet frames

Recent results from real algebraic geometry and the theory of polynomial optimization are related in a new framework to the existence question of multivariate tight wavelet frames whose generators have at least one vanishing moment. Namely, several equivalent formulations of the so-called Unitary Extension Principle by Ron and Shen are interpreted in terms of hermitian sums of squares of certain nonnegative trigonometric polynomials and in terms of semi-definite programming. The latter together with the recent results in algebraic geometry and semi-definite programming allow us to answer affirmatively the long standing open question of the existence of such tight wavelet frames in dimension $d=2$; we also provide numerically efficient methods for checking their existence and actual construction in any dimension. We exhibit a class of counterexamples in dimension $d=3$ showing that, in general, the UEP property is not sufficient for the existence of tight wavelet frames. On the other hand we provide stronger sufficient conditions for the existence of tight wavelet frames in dimension $d > 3$ and illustrate our results by several examples.

Conditioning moments of singular measures for entropy optimization. I

In order to process a potential moment sequence by the entropy optimization method one has to be assured that the original measure is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure. We propose a non-linear exponential transform of the moment sequence of any measure, including singular ones, so that the entropy optimization method can still be used in the reconstruction or approximation of the original. The Cauchy transform in one variable, used for this very purpose in a classical context by A.\ A.\ Markov and followers, is replaced in higher dimensions by the Fantappiè transform. Several algorithms for reconstruction from moments are sketched, while we intend to provide the numerical experiments and computational aspects in a subsequent article. The essentials of complex analysis, harmonic analysis, and entropy optimization are recalled in some detail, with the goal of making the main results more accessible to non-expert readers. Keywords: Fantappiè transform; entropy optimization; moment problem; tube domain; exponential transform

Reducing subspaces for analytic multipliers of the Bergman space

We answer affirmatively the problem left open in \cite{DSZ,GSZZ} and prove that for a finite Blaschke product $ϕ$, the minimal reducing subspaces of the Bergman space multiplier $M_ϕ$ are pairwise orthogonal and their number is equal to the number $q$ of connected components of the Riemann surface of $ϕ^{-1}\circ ϕ$. In particular, the double commutant $\{M_ϕ,M_ϕ^\ast\}'$ is abelian of dimension $q$. An analytic/arithmetic description of the minimal reducing subspaces of $M_ϕ$ is also provided, along with a list of all possible cases in degree of $ϕ$ equal to eight.

Borcea's variance conjectures on the critical points of polynomials

Closely following recent ideas of J. Borcea, we discuss various modifications and relaxations of Sendov's conjecture about the location of critical points of a polynomial with complex coefficients. The resulting open problems are formulated in terms of matrix theory, mathematical statistics or potential theory. Quite a few links between classical works in the geometry of polynomials and recent advances in the location of spectra of small rank perturbations of structured matrices are established. A couple of simple examples provide natural and sometimes sharp bounds for the proposed conjectures.

Positivity and optimization for semi-algebraic functions

We describe algebraic certificates of positivity for functions belonging to a finitely generated algebra of Borel measurable functions, with particular emphasis to algebras generated by semi-algebraic functions. In which case the standard global optimization problem with constraints given by elements of the same algebra is reduced via a natural change of variables to the better understood case of polynomial optimization. A collection of simple examples and numerical experiments complement the theoretical parts of the article.

A Striktpositivstellensatz for measurable functions (corrected version)

A weighted sums of squares decomposition of positive Borel measurable functions on a bounded Borel subset of the Euclidean space is obtained via duality from the spectral theorem for tuples of commuting self-adjoint operators. The analogous result for polynomials or certain rational functions was amply exploited during the last decade in a variety of applications.

Unitary invariants for Hilbert modules of finite rank

A refined notion of curvature for a linear system of Hermitian vector spaces, in the sense of Grothendieck, leads to the unitary classification of a large class of analytic Hilbert modules. Specifically, we study Hilbert sub-modules, for which the localizations are of finite (but not constant) dimension, of an analytic function space with a reproducing kernel. The correspondence between analytic Hilbert modules of constant rank and holomorphic Hermitian bundles on domains of $\mathbb C^n$ due to Cowen and Douglas, as well as a natural analytic localization technique derived from the Hochschild cohomology of topological algebras play a major role in the proofs. A series of concrete computations, inspired by representation theory of linear groups, illustrate the abstract concepts of the paper.

Planar elliptic growth

The planar elliptic extension of the Laplacian growth is, after a proper parametrization, given in a form of a solution to the equation for area-preserving diffeomorphisms. The infinite set of conservation laws associated with such elliptic growth is interpreted in terms of potential theory, and the relations between two major forms of the elliptic growth are analyzed. The constants of integration for closed form solutions are identified as the singularities of the Schwarz function, which are located both inside and outside the moving contour. Well-posedness of the recovery of the elliptic operator governing the process from the continuum of interfaces parametrized by time is addressed and two examples of exact solutions of elliptic growth are presented.

Bergman polynomials on an Archipelago: Estimates, Zeros and Shape Reconstruction

Growth estimates of complex orthogonal polynomials with respect to the area measure supported by a disjoint union of planar Jordan domains (called, in short, an archipelago) are obtained by a combination of methods of potential theory and rational approximation theory. The study of the asymptotic behavior of the roots of these polynomials reveals a surprisingly rich geometry, which reflects three characteristics: the relative position of an island in the archipelago, the analytic continuation picture of the Schwarz function of every individual boundary and the singular points of the exterior Green function. By way of explicit example, fine asymptotics are obtained for the lemniscate archipelago $|z^m-1|<r^m, 0<r<1,$ which consists of $m$ islands. The asymptotic analysis of the Christoffel functions associated to the same orthogonal polynomials leads to a very accurate reconstruction algorithm of the shape of the archipelago, knowing only finitely many of its power moments. This work naturally complements a 1969 study by H. Widom of Szegő orthogonal polynomials on an archipelago and the more recent asymptotic analysis of Bergman orthogonal polynomials unveiled by the last two authors and their collaborators.

Multivariate Determinateness

The uniqueness question of the multivariate moment problem is studied by different methods: Hilbert space operators, complex function theory, polynomial approximation, disintegration, integral geometry. Most of the known results in the multi-dimensional case are reviewed and reproved, and a number of new determinacy criteria are developed.

Measures with zeros in the inverse of their moment matrix

We investigate and discuss when the inverse of a multivariate truncated moment matrix of a measure $μ$ has zeros in some prescribed entries. We describe precisely which pattern of these zeroes corresponds to independence, namely, the measure having a product structure. A more refined finding is that the key factor forcing a zero entry in this inverse matrix is a certain conditional triangularity property of the orthogonal polynomials associated with $μ$.

Random Matrices in 2D, Laplacian Growth and Operator Theory

Since it was first applied to the study of nuclear interactions by Wigner and Dyson, almost 60 years ago, Random Matrix Theory (RMT) has developed into a field of its own within applied mathematics, and is now essential to many parts of theoretical physics, from condensed matter to high energy. The fundamental results obtained so far rely mostly on the theory of random matrices in one dimension (the dimensionality of the spectrum, or equilibrium probability density). In the last few years, this theory has been extended to the case where the spectrum is two-dimensional, or even fractal, with dimensions between 1 and 2. In this article, we review these recent developments and indicate some physical problems where the theory can be applied.

Positive polynomials in scalar and matrix variables, the spectral theorem and optimization

We follow a stream of the history of positive matrices and positive functionals, as applied to algebraic sums of squares decompositions, with emphasis on the interaction between classical moment problems, function theory of one or several complex variables and modern operator theory. The second part of the survey focuses on recently discovered connections between real algebraic geometry and optimization as well as polynomials in matrix variables and some control theory problems. These new applications have prompted a series of recent studies devoted to the structure of positivity and convexity in a free *-algebra, the appropriate setting for analyzing inequalities on polynomials having matrix variables. We sketch some of these developments, add to them and comment on the rapidly growing literature.

On the classification of complex vector bundles of stable rank

One describes, using a detailed analysis of Atiyah--Hirzebruch spectral sequence, the tuples of cohomology classes on a compact, complex manifold, corresponding to the Chern classes of a complex vector bundle of stable rank. This classification becomes more effective on generalized flag manifolds, where the Lie algebra formalism and concrete integrability conditions describe in constructive terms the Chern classes of a vector bundle.

Norm estimates of complex symmetric operators applied to quantum systems

This paper communicates recent results in theory of complex symmetric operators and shows, through two non-trivial examples, their potential usefulness in the study of Schrödinger operators. In particular, we propose a formula for computing the norm of a compact complex symmetric operator. This observation is applied to two concrete problems related to quantum mechanical systems. First, we give sharp estimates on the exponential decay of the resolvent and the single-particle density matrix for Schrödinger operators with spectral gaps. Second, we provide new ways of evaluating the resolvent norm for Schrödinger operators appearing in the complex scaling theory of resonances.

Positivity aspects of the Fantappie transform

A Hilbert space approach to the classical Fantappie transform, based on the concept of Gel'fand triples of locally convex spaces, leads to a novel proof of Martineau-Aizenberg duality theorem. A study of Fantappie transforms of positive measures on the unit ball in $\C^n$ relates ideas of realization theory of multivariate linear systems, locally convex duality and pluripotential theory. This is applied to obtain von Neumann type estimates on the joint numerical range of tuples of Hilbert space operators.

Solving moment problems by dimensional extension

The first part of this paper is devoted to an analysis of moment problems in R^n with supports contained in a closed set defined by finitely many polynomial inequalities. The second part of the paper uses the representation results of positive functionals on certain spaces of rational functions developed in the first part, for decomposing a polynomial which is positive on such a semi-algebraic set into a canonical sum of squares of rational functions times explicit multipliers.
