An interpretation of saturation phenomena as Glauber-Gribov multiple parton scatterings

We compare two formalism that describe minijet production in pA and AA collisions: pQCD supplemented by Glauber-Gribov multiple semihard parton scatterings (pQCD+Glauber), and the Colour Glass Condensate (CGC). We argue that in a suitable limit they are equivalent to each other, the PQCD+Glauber model being more accurate from a numerical point of view. Finally, we analyze RHIC data on Au-Au integrated charged multiplicities in the pQCD+Glauber framework, and conclude that at least at central rapidity there is no sign of gluon saturation.

Where is the charm quark energy loss at RHIC?

Heavy quark energy loss in a hot QCD plasma is computed taking into account the competing effects due to suppression of zeroth order gluon radiation below the plasma frequency and the enhancement of gluon radiation due to first order medium induced Bremsstrahlung. The results suggest a surprising degree of cancellation between the two medium effects for charm quarks and provides a possible explanation for the null effect observed by PHENIX in the prompt electron spectrum in Au+Au at $\surd s=$ 130 AGeV.

Differential freezeout and pion interferometry at RHIC from covariant transport theory

Puzzling discrepancies between recent pion interferometry data on Au+Au reactions at s^1/2 = 130 and 200 AGeV from RHIC and predictions based on ideal hydrodynamics are analyzed in terms of covariant parton transport theory. The discrepancies of out and longitudinal radii are significantly reduced when the finite opacity of the gluon plasma is taken into account.

High-p_T Tomography of d+Au and Au+Au at SPS, RHIC, and LHC

The interplay of nuclear effects on the p_T > 2 GeV inclusive hadron spectra in d+Au and Au+Au reactions at root(s) = 17, 200, 5500 GeV is compared to leading order perturbative QCD calculations for elementary p+p (p-bar+p) collisions. The competition between nuclear shadowing, Cronin effect, and jet energy loss due to medium-induced gluon radiation is predicted to lead to a striking energy dependence of the nuclear suppression/enhancement pattern in A+A reactions. We show that future d+Au data can used to disentangle the initial and final state effects.

High-p_T Pion Quenching versus anti+Baryon Enhancement in Nucleus-Nucleus Collisions

Jet quenching of quarks and gluons in central A+A collisions suppresses the high-p_T meson production and exposes novel baryon dynamics that we attribute to (gluonic) baryon junctions. This mechanism predicts baryon enhancement in a finite moderate-p_T window that decreases with increasing impact parameter. We also extend recent calculations of the transverse momentum behavior of p/pi^+ and p-bar/pi^- to other baryon species and show that a similar pattern is expected for the K^-/Lambda and K^+/bar{Lambda} ratios. Within the framework of the model constant p-bar/p and bar{Lambda}/Lambda ratios are found in central Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies up to p_T ~= 4 - 5 GeV.

The Decoupling Problem at RHIC

We investigate whether it is possible to dynamically generate from classical transport theory the observed surprising Rout ~ Rside in Au+Au at s^1/2 = 130A GeV at RHIC. We obtained covariant solutions to the Boltzmann transport equation via the MPC technique, for a wide range of partonic initial conditions and opacities. We demonstrate that there exist transport solutions that yield a freezeout distribution with Rout < Rside for Kperp > ~ 1.5 GeV. These solutions correspond to continuous evaporation-like freezeout, where the emission duration is comparable to the source size. Naively this would mean Rout > Rside. Nevertheless, our sources exhibit Rout < Rside because they are narrower in the 'out' than in the 'side' direction and, in addition, a positive x_out-t correlation develops reducing Rout further.

Transverse Expansion and High $p_T$ Azimuthal Asymmetry at RHIC

Rapid 3+1D transverse plus Bjorken collective expansion in $A+A$ collisions at ultra-relativistic energies is shown to reduce substantially the azimuthal asymmetry resulting from jet quenching. While the azimuthal asymmetry in non-central collisions, $v_2(p_T>2 \rm{GeV/c})\sim 0.15$ reported by STAR at RHIC, can be accounted for by spatially anisotropic jet energy loss through a 1+1D expanding gluon plasma with $dN^g/dy\sim 1000$, we show that if rapid transverse collective expansion of the plasma is assumed, then the asymmetry due to jet quenching may be reduced below the observed level. Possible implications of this effect are discussed.

Jet Quenching and the p-bar >= pi- Anomaly at RHIC

PHENIX data on Au+Au at root(s)_= 130 AGeV suggest that p-bar yields may exceed pi- at high p_T > 2 GeV/c. We propose that jet quenching in central collisions suppresses the hard PQCD component of the spectra in central A+A reactions, thereby exposing a novel component of baryon dynamics that we attribute to (gluonic) baryon junctions. We predict that the observed p-bar >= pi- and the p > pi+ anomaly at p_T ~ 2 GeV/c is limited to a finite p_T window that decreases with increasing impact parameter.

The role of jet quenching in the p-bar >= pi- anomaly at RHIC

Preliminary PHENIX data on $Au+Au$ reactions at $\sqrt{s}= 130$ AGeV suggest that $\bar{p}$ yields may exceed $π^-$ at high $p_{\rm T} > 2$ GeV/c. We propose that jet quenching in central collisions suppresses the hard PQCD component of the spectra in central $A+A$ reactions, thereby exposing a novel non-perturbative component of baryon dynamics. We suggest that baryon junctions provide a possible explanation of the anomalous component. We predict that the $\bar{p} \geq π^-$ anomaly is limited to a finite $p_{\rm T}$ window and decreases with increasing impact parameter.

The effect of finite-range interactions in classical transport theory

The effect of scattering with non-zero impact parameters between consituents in relativistic heavy ion collisions is investigated. In solving the relativistic Boltzmann equation, the characteristic range of the collision kernel is varied from approximately one fm to zero while leaving the mean-free path unchanged. Modifying this range is shown to significantly affect spectra and flow observables. The finite range is shown to provide effective viscosities, shear, bulk viscosity and heat conductivity, with the viscous coefficients being proportional to the square of the interaction range.

Lectures on the Theory of High Energy A+A at RHIC

In these lectures aspects of current theory used to interpret the preliminary data on ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions at RHIC energies in terms of the physical properties of QCD matter at extreme densities are introduced. Topics include: What are the physics questions at SPS and RHIC?, Geometrical vs Dynamical features of A+A, The interplay of computable Hard pQCD vs phenomenological Soft dynamics, Baryon number transport and Junctions, How can we compute and get experimental control over the initial conditions?, How to reconcile apparent hydrodynamic behavior with partonic/hadronic transport theory. I use the Preliminary RHIC data available up to June 1,2001 to illustrate these topics. Since the main new observable at RHIC relative to SPS is jet quenching, I elaborate on this ``tomographic'' probe of ultra-dense matter. The possible discovery of jet quenching at RHIC by STAR and PHENIX is highlighted.

Elliptic flow and freezeout from the parton cascade MPC

Differential elliptic flow out to p_T ~ 5 GeV/c and particle spectra are calculated using the MPC elastic parton cascade model for Au+Au at Ecm ~ 130A GeV. The evolution is computed from parton transport theory, followed by hadronization either via independent fragmentation or by imposing parton-hadron duality. With pQCD elastic cross sections, very large initial gluon densities dN/deta > 7000 are required to reproduce the data measured by the STAR collaboration. In addition, elliptic flow and the p_T spectra are shown to be very sensit ive to particle subdivision.

The Transverse Energy as a Barometer of a Saturated Plasma

The evolution of the gluon plasma produced with saturation initial conditions is calculated via Boltzmann transport theory for nuclear collisions at high energy. The saturation scale increases with the nuclear size and the beam energy, and thus we find that the perturbative rescattering rate decreases relative to the initial longitudinal expansion rate of the plasma. The effective longitudinal pressure remains significantly below the lattice QCD pressure until the plasma cools to near the confinement scale. Therefore, the transverse energy per unit of rapidity and its dependence on beam energy provides a sensitive test of gluon saturation models: the fractional transverse energy loss due to final state interactions is smaller and exhibits a weaker energy dependence than if ideal (nondissipative) hydrodynamics applied throughout the evolution.

High $p_T$ Azimuthal Asymmetry in Non-central A+A at RHIC

The high $p_{\rm T}>3$ GeV azimuthal asymmetry, $v_2(p_{\rm T})$, in non-central nuclear collisions at RHIC is shown to be a sensitive measure of the initial parton density distribution of the produced quark-gluon plasma. A generalization of the Gyulassy-Levai-Vitev (GLV) non-abelian energy loss formalism including Bjorken 1+1D expansion as well as important kinematic constraints is used.

Elliptic flow from an on-shell parton cascade

Differential elliptic flow out to p_t ~ 5 GeV/c is calculated using the MPC elastic parton cascade model for Au+Au at Ecm ~ 130A GeV. The results are compared to recent STAR/RHIC elliptic flow data. An elliptic flow pattern comparable to the data seems to require initial parton densities at least twice higher than predicted by the HIJING model. Elliptic flow is also shown to be sensitive to the hadronization procedure.

The Next Yukawa Phase of QCD at RHIC

QCD predicts the existence of a new partonic Yukawa phase above a critical temperature $T_c\sim 150$ MeV. I review some of the key observables which will be used in heavy ion reactions to search for this new phase at RHIC. Systematics of collective observables ($N_{ch},E_\perp)$, flow patterns, meson interferometry, jet quenching, and $J/ψ$ suppression are discussed. This talk is updated with the first data from RHIC.

The Effective Pressure of a Saturated Gluon Plasma

The evolution of the gluon plasma produced with saturation initial conditions is calculated via transport theory for nuclear collisions with 0.1 <sqrt(s) <10 A TeV. The effective longitudinal pressure is found to remain significantly below the lattice QCD pressure with these initial conditions until the plasma cools to near the confinement scale. The absolute value of the transverse energy per unit of rapidity and its dependence on beam energy is shown to provide a sensitive test of gluon saturation models since the fractional transverse energy loss due to final state interactions is predicted to be much smaller and exhibit a weaker energy dependence than nondissipative hydrodynamics applied throughout the evolution.
