New Solutions to Covariant Non-equilibrium Dynamics

New solutions of 3+1D covariant kinetic theory are presented for nuclear collisions in the energy domain Ecm ~ 200 AGeV. They are obtained using MPC, a new Monte-Carlo parton transport technique that employs very high parton subdivision that is necessary to preserve covariance. The transport results are compared with ideal hydrodynamics solutions. We show that the transport evolution differs significantly from hydrodynamics. In addition, we compare the transport freeze-out distributions to those obtained from ideal hydrodynamics with the Cooper-Frye isotherm freeze-out prescription. The transport freeze-out four-volume is shown to be sensitive to the reaction rates and deviates from both time-like and space-like freeze-out 3D hypersurfaces commonly assumed. In particular, we find that there does not exist a universal freeze-out temperature. Finally, the transverse momentum distributions are found to deviate by up to an order of magnitude from (Cooper-Frye frozen) hydrodynamics for a wide range of possible initial conditions and reaction rates at RHIC energies.

Searching for the Next Yukawa Phase of QCD

QCD predicts that the interactions between quarks and gluons change from a confining to a screened Yukawa form above a critical temperature $T_c\sim 150$ MeV. In this talk, I review some of the key observables in heavy ion reactions which are being used to search for this new partonic Yukawa phase at SPS and RHIC. These include collective observables such as $dE_\perp/dyd^2p_\perp$, meson interferometry, jet quenching, and $J/ψ$ suppression.

Transverse Momentum Dependence of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal Effect

We study the transverse momentum dependence of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in QED, starting from the high energy expansion of the solution of the Dirac equation in the presence of an external field. The angular integrated energy loss formula differs from an earlier expression of Zakharov by taking finite kinematical boundaries into account. In an expansion in powers of the opacity of the medium, we derive explicit expressions for the radiation cross section associated with N=1, 2 and 3 scatterings. We verify the Bethe-Heitler and the factorization limit, and we calculate corrections to the factorization limit proportional to the square of the target size. A closed form expression valid to arbitrary orders in the opacity is derived in the dipole approximation. The resulting radiation spectrum is non-analytic in the coupling constant which is traced back to the transverse momentum broadening of a hard parton undergoing multiple small angle Moliere scattering. In extending the results to QCD, we test a previously used dipole prescription by comparing to direct pQCD results for N=1 and 2. For N=1, the QCD dipole prescription reproduces exactly the Bertsch-Gunion radiation spectrum. For N=2, we find a sizeable correction which reduces to a multiplicative factor 17/8 at large separation.

Jet Quenching in Thin Quark-Gluon Plasmas I: Formalism

The modification and amplification of the gluon angular distribution produced along with hard jets in nuclear collisions is computed. We consider the limit of a thin quark-gluon plasma, where the number of rescatterings of the jet and gluons is small. The focus is on jet quenching associated with the formation of highly off-shell partons in hard scattering events involving nuclei. The interference between the initial hard radiation amplitude, the multiple induced Gunion-Bertsch radiation amplitudes, and gluon rescattering amplitudes leads to an angular distribution that differs considerably from both the standard DGLAP evolution and from the classical limit parton cascading. The cases of a single and double rescattering are considered in detail, and a systematic method to compute all matrix elements for the general case is developed. A simple power law scaling of the angular distribution with increasing number of rescatterings is found and used for estimates of the fractional energy loss as a function of the plasma thickness.

Jet quenching in thin plasmas

We investigate the energy loss of quarks and gluons produced in hard processes resulting from final state rescatterings in a finite quark-gluon plasma. The angular distribution of the soft gluon bremsstrahlung induced by n_s=1 rescatterings in the plasma is computed in the Gyulassy-Wang model. Special focus is on how the interference between the initial hard radiation amplitude, the multiple induced Gunion-Bertsch radiation amplitudes, and gluon rescattering amplitudes modifies the classical parton cascade results.

Elliptic flow from a parton cascade

The dependence of elliptic flow at RHIC energies on the effective parton scattering cross section is calculated using the ZPC parton cascade model. We show that the v_2 measure of elliptic flow saturates early in the evolution before the hadronization transition to a rather large value ~0.05-0.15 as σ_g varies from 2-10 mb and thus is a sensitive probe of the dynamics in the plasma phase.

Anti-Hyperon Enhancement through Baryon Junction Loops

The baryon junction exchange mechanism recently proposed to explain valence baryon number transport in nuclear collisions is extended to study midrapidity anti-hyperon production. Baryon junction-anti-junction (J anti-J) loops are shown to enhance anti-Lambda, anti-Xi, anti-Omega yields as well as lead to long range rapidity correlations. Results are compared to recent WA97 Pb + Pb -> Y + anti-Y + X data.

Baryon Number Transport via Gluonic Junctions

A novel non-perturbative gluon junction mechanism is introduced within the HIJING/B nuclear collision event generator to calculate baryon number transport and hyperon production in pA and AA collisions. This gluonic mechanism can account for the observed large mid-rapidity valence baryon yield in Pb+Pb at 160 AGeV and predicts high initial baryon densities at RHIC. However, the highly enhanced Lambda-Lambdabar yield and the baryon transverse momentum flow observed in this reaction can only be partially described.

High p_T Phenomena in Heavy Ion Collisions at s^1/2=20 and 200 AGeV

Jet quenching as observed via high p_T hadron production is studied in the HIJING1.35 model. We test the model on recent WA98 data on 160 AGeV Pb+Pb -> pi0 up to 4 GeV/c. The results depend sensitively on the model of the Cronin effect. At (RHIC) collider energies (s^1/2 > 200 AGeV), on the other hand, semi-hard hadron production becomes insensitive to the above model and is thus expected to be a cleaner probe of jet quenching signature associated with non-Abelian radiative energy loss.

Jet Quenching and Cronin Enhancement in A+A at s^1/2=20 vs 200 AGeV

The sensitivity of semi-hard (p_\perp < 10 GeV) hadron production to parton energy loss in high energy nuclear collisions is studied via the HIJING1.35 model. We test the model on recent WA98 data on 160 AGeV Pb+Pb -> pi^0 up to 4 GeV/c and while these data are reproduced, the results depends sensitively on the model of the Cronin effect. At (RHIC) collider energies (s^1/2 > 200 AGeV), on the other hand, semi-hard hadron production becomes insensitive to the above model and is thus expected to be a cleaner probe of jet quenching signature associated with non-Abelian radiative energy loss.

Baryon Junction Stopping at the SPS and RHIC via HIJING/B

Baryon stopping at the SPS and RHIC energies is calculated by introducing a new baryon junction mechanism into HIJING. The exchange of a baryon junction, according to Regge phenomenology, leads to a cosh(y/2) rapidity dependence and an s^(-1/4) energy dependence of the inclusive baryon cross section. This baryon junction dynamics also leads naturally to enhanced p_T broadening in pA and AA together with enhanced mid-rapidity hyperon production.

Equation of state and collision rate tests of parton cascade models

We develop two further numerical tests of parton cascade models: the ideal gas equation of state and the collision frequency tests. The equation of state test checks the initial momentum distribution generator and free expansion dynamics in periodic inhomogeneous geometries. The collision rate test is sensitive to spatial inhomogeneities and the collision algorithm. These tests are applied to the recently developed ZPC parton cascade model. The tests helped uncover unphysical correlations induced by one of the commonly used random number generators and showed the necessity of particle subdivisions for convergence to the exact analytic limit.

Transverse Energy Evolution as a Test of Parton Cascade Models

We propose a test of Monte Carlo Parton Cascade models based on analytic solutions of covariant kinetic theory for longitudinally boost and transverse translation invariant boundary conditions. We compute the evolution of the transverse energy per unit rapidity for typical mini-jet initial conditions expected in ultra-relativistic nuclear collisions. The kinetic theory solutions under these conditions test the models severely because they deviate strongly from free-streaming and also from ideal Euler and dissipative Navier-Stokes hydrodynamical approximations. We show that the newly formulated ZPC model passes this test. In addition, we show that the initial mini-jet density would need to be approximately four times higher than estimated with the HIJING generator in central Au+Au collisions at c.m. energies 200 AGeV in order that parton cascade dynamics can be approximated by Navier-Stokes hydrodynamics.

Transverse Energy production in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

Kinetic theory is used to check the applicability of parton cascade in 1 dimensional expansion. Using the information provided by 3 dimensional parton cascade, we model the transverse expansion by an effective area. With this model, kinetic theory is able to give prediction of the time development of transverse energy which is in good agreement with the parton cascade results.

Yang-Mills Radiation in Ultra-relativistic Nuclear Collisions

The classical Yang-Mills radiation computed in the McLerran-Venugopalan model is shown to be equivalent to the gluon bremsstrahlung distribution to lowest order in pQCD. The classical distribution is also shown to match smoothly onto the conventional pQCD mini-jet distribution at a scale characteristic of the initial parton transverse density of the system. The atomic number and energy dependence of that scale is computed from available structure function information. The limits of applicability of the classical Yang-Mills description of nuclear collisions at RHIC and LHC energies are discussed.

Strangeness Production via Parton Cascade

We study pre-equilibrium strangeness production at RHIC energies in a new parton cascade. Starting with the turbulent glue HIJING initial conditions we investigate the interplay between mini-jet and soft beam jet gluons for strangeness production prior to hadronization, and show the importance of soft beam jet gluons in the strangeness production.

Nuclear gluon shadowing via dileptons from open charm decay in $p+A$ at $\sqrt s=200$ AGeV

Opposite-sign lepton pairs ($ee$,$eμ$ and $μμ$) from open charm decay are proposed as a measure of nuclear shadowing effects. Via an approximate scaling the ratio of the dilepton spectra from $p+A$ to those from $pp$ reflects the shadowing function well. We show that the required measurements are feasible at the Relativistic Heavy ion Collider (RHIC) by considering the backgrounds according to the proposed PHENIX detector geometry.

The Time-Delay Signature of Quark-Gluon-Plasma Formation in Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

The hydrodynamic expansion of quark-gluon plasmas with spherical and longitudinally boost-invariant geometries is studied as a function of the initial energy density. The sensitivity of the collective flow pattern to uncertainties in the nuclear matter equation of state is explored. We concentrate on the effect of a possible finite width, $ΔT \sim 0.1 T_c$, of the transition region between quark-gluon plasma and hadronic phase. Although slow deflagration solutions that act to stall the expansion do not exist for $ΔT > 0.08 T_c$, we find, nevertheless, that the equation of state remains sufficiently soft in the transition region to delay the propagation of ordinary rarefaction waves for a considerable time. We compute the dependence of the pion-interferometry correlation function on $ΔT$, since this is the most promising observable for time-delayed expansion. The signature of time delay, proposed by Pratt and Bertsch, is an enhancement of the ratio of the inverse width of the pion correlation function in out-direction to that in side-direction. One of our main results is that this generic signature of quark-gluon plasma formation is rather robust to the uncertainties in the width of the transition region. Furthermore, for longitudinal boost-invariant geometries, the signal is likely to be maximized around RHIC energies, $\sqrt{s} \sim 200$ AGeV.
