Spectral analysis of the Neumann--Poincaré operator on the crescent-shaped domain and touching disks and analysis of plasmon resonance

We consider the Neumann--Poincaré operator on a planar domain enclosed by two touching circular boundaries. This domain, which is a crescent-shaped domain or touching disks, has a cusp at the touching point of two circles. We analyze the operator via the Fourier transform on the boundary circles of the domain. In particular, we define a Hilbert space on which the operator is bounded, self-adjoint. We then obtain the complete spectral resolution of the Neumann--Poincaré operator. On both the crescent-shaped domain and touching disks, the Neumann--Poincaré operator has only absolutely continuous spectrum on the closed interval $[-1/2,1/2]$. As an application, we analyze the plasmon resonance on the crescent-shaped domain and touching disks.

Geometric multipole expansion and its application to semi-neutral inclusions of general shape

This paper presents a new concept of geometric multipole expansion for the conductivity or anti-plane elasticity problem in two dimensions by using the Faber polynomials. As an application, we construct semi-neutral inclusions of general shape that show relatively negligible field perturbations for low-order polynomial loadings. These inclusions are of the multilayer structure whose material parameters are determined such that some coefficients of geometric multipole expansion vanish.

Explicit analytic solution for the plane elastostatic problem with a rigid inclusion of arbitrary shape subject to arbitrary far-field loadings

We provide an analytical solution for the elastic fields in a two-dimensional unbounded isotropic body with a rigid inclusion. Our analysis is based on the boundary integral formulation of the elastostatic problem and geometric function theory. Specifically, we use the coordinate system provided by the exterior conformal mapping of the inclusion to define a density basis functions on the boundary of the inclusion, and we use the Faber polynomials associated with the inclusion for a basis inside the inclusion. The latter, which constitutes the main novelty of our approach, allows us to obtain an explicit series solution for the plane elastostatic problem for an inclusion of arbitrary shape in terms of the given arbitrary far-field loading.

Geometric series expansion of the Neumann-Poincaré operator: application to composite materials

The Neumann-Poincaré operator, a singular integral operator on the boundary of a domain, naturally appears when one solves a conductivity transmission problem via the boundary integral formulation. Recently, a series expression of the Neumann-Poincaré operator was developed in two dimensions based on geometric function theory. In this paper, we investigate geometric properties of composite materials by using this series expansion. In particular, we obtain explicit formulas for the polarization tensor and the effective conductivity for an inclusion or a periodic array of inclusions of arbitrary shape with extremal conductivity, in terms of the associated exterior conformal mapping. Also, we observe by numerical computations that the spectrum of the Neumann--Poincaré operator has a monotonic behavior with respect to the shape deformation of the inclusion. Additionally, we derive inequality relations of the coefficients of the Riemann mapping of an arbitrary Lipschitz domain by using the properties of the polarization tensor corresponding to the domain.

Shape monotonicity of the first Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalue on eccentric annuli

In this paper, we investigate the monotonicity of the first Steklov--Dirichlet eigenvalue on eccentric annuli with respect to the distance, namely $t$, between the centers of the inner and outer boundaries of an annulus. We first show the differentiability of the eigenvalue in $t$ and obtain an integral expression for the derivative value in two and higher dimensions. We then derive an upper bound of the eigenvalue for each $t$, in two dimensions, by the variational formulation. We also obtain a lower bound of the eigenvalue, given a restriction that the two boundaries of the annulus are sufficiently close. The key point of the proof of the lower bound is in analyzing the limit behavior of an infinite series expansion of the first eigenfunction in bipolar coordinates. We also perform numerical experiments that exhibit the monotonicity for two dimensions.

An extension of the Eshelby conjecture to domains of general shape in anti-plane elasticity

According to the Eshelby conjecture, an ellipse or ellipsoid is the only shape that induces an interior uniform strain under a uniform far-field loading. We extend the Eshelby conjecture to domains of general shape for anti-plane elasticity. Specifically, we show that for each positive integer $N$, an inclusion induces an interior uniform strain under a polynomial loading of degree $N$ if and only if the exterior conformal map of the inclusion is a Laurent series of degree $N$. Furthermore, for the isotropic case, we characterize the shape of an inclusion by only using the first-degree polynomial loading and explicitly solve the interior potential of the inclusion in terms of the Grunsky coefficients.

Analytical shape recovery of a conductivity inclusion based on Faber polynomials

A conductivity inclusion, inserted in a homogeneous background, induces a perturbation in the background potential. This perturbation admits a multipole expansion whose coefficients are the so-called generalized polarization tensors (GPTs). GPTs can be obtained from multistatic measurements. As a modification of GPTs, the Faber polynomial polarization tensors (FPTs) were recently introduced in two dimensions. In this study, we design two novel analytical non-iterative methods for recovering the shape of a simply connected inclusion from GPTs by employing the concept of FPTs. First, we derive an explicit expression for the coefficients of the exterior conformal mapping associated with an inclusion in a simple form in terms of GPTs, which allows us to accurately reconstruct the shape of an inclusion with extreme or near-extreme conductivity. Secondly, we provide an explicit asymptotic formula in terms of GPTs for the shape of an inclusion with arbitrary conductivity by considering the inclusion as a perturbation of its equivalent ellipse. With this formula, one can non-iteratively approximate an inclusion of general shape with arbitrary conductivity, including a straight or asymmetric shape. Numerical experiments demonstrate the validity of the proposed analytical approaches.

Inclusions of general shapes having constant field inside the core and non-elliptical neutral coated inclusions with anisotropic conductivity

For certain shapes of inclusions embedded in a body, the field inside the inclusion is uniform for some boundary condition. We provide a construction scheme for inclusions of general shapes having such a uniformity property in two dimensions based on the conformal mapping technique for the potential problem. Using this complex analysis method, we also design non-elliptical neutral coated inclusions with anisotropic conductivity. Neutral coated inclusions do not perturb a background uniform field when they are inserted into a homogeneous matrix. Although coated inclusions of various shapes are neutral to a single field, only concentric ellipses or confocal ellipsoids can be neutral to all uniform fields. This paper presents our work relating to the construction of non-elliptical coated inclusions with anisotropic conductivity in two dimensions that are neutral to all uniform fields, where the assignment of the flux condition on the boundary of the core depends on the applied background field. Using these neutral inclusions, we obtain cylindrical neutral inclusions in three dimensions, with no flux applied to the boundary of the core and with the anisotropic conductivity function of the shell given in accordance with the background uniform field.

Characterization of stress concentration in two-dimensional boundary value problems: Neumann-type and Dirichlet-type

We consider a boundary value problem for the conductivity equation in a bounded domain containing an inclusion which is nearly touching to the domain's boundary. We assume that the domain and the inclusion are disks with conductivity jump on the boundary of the inclusion. By using the layer potential technique and adopting the bipolar coordinates, we derive the asymptotic formulas which explicitly describe the gradient blow-up of the solution as the distance between the inclusion and the domain's boundary tends to zero. It turns out that the gradient blow-up term can be identified with the electric field generated by certain kind of virtual line charges supported on line segments outside of the domain; thereby, the gradient blow-up is completely characterized in terms of both of Neumann-type and Dirichlet-type boundary conditions, conductivities and geometric parameters.

A new series solution method for the transmission problem

We derive analytic series representation for the Neumann-Poincare operator using the exterior conformal mapping for general shape domains. We derive the formula by using the Faber polynomial basis for arbitrary Lipschitz domains. With the proposed method we can approximate the spectrum of the smooth domains by finding the eigenvalues of matrices. We also find the connection of the boundary integral equations with the exterior conformal mapping, explicitly.

Shape reconstruction of a conductivity inclusion using the Faber polynomials

We consider the shape reconstruction of a conductivity inclusion in two dimensions. We use the concept of Faber polynomials Polarization Tensors (FPTs) introduced in \cite{choi:2018:GME} to derive an exact shape recovery formula for an inclusion with the extreme conductivity. This shape can be a good initial guess in the shape recovery optimization for an inclusion with either small or large conductivity values. We illustrate and validate our results with numerical examples.

A decay estimate for the eigenvalues of the Neumann-Poincaré operator in two dimensions using the Grunsky coefficients

We investigate the decay property of the eigenvalues of the Neumann-Poincaré operator in two dimensions. As is well-known, this operator admits only a sequence of eigenvalues that accumulates to zero as its spectrum for a bounded domain having $C^{1,α}$ boundary with $α\in (0,1)$. In this paper, we show that the eigenvalue $λ_k$'s of the Neumann-Poincaré operator ordered by size satisfy that $|λ_k| = O(k^{-p-α+1/2})$ for an arbitrary simply connected domain having $C^{1+p,α}$ boundary with $p\geq 0,~ α\in(0,1)$ and $p+α>\frac{1}{2}$.

Electric field concentration in the presence of an inclusion with eccentric core-shell geometry

In this paper we analyze the gradient blow-up of the solution to the conductivity problem in two dimensions in the presence of an inclusion with eccentric core-shell geometry. Assuming that the core and shell have circular boundaries that are nearly touching, we derive an asymptotic formula for the solution in terms of the single and double layer potentials with image line charges. We also deduce an integral formula with image line charges for the problem relating to two nearly touching separated conductors.

Corner effects on the perturbation of an electric potential

We consider the perturbation of an electric potential due to an insulating inclusion with corners. This perturbation is known to admit a multipole expansion whose coefficients are linear combinations of generalized polarization tensors. We define new geometric factors of a simple planar domain in terms of a conformal mapping associated with the domain. The geometric factors share properties of the generalized polarization tensors and are the Fourier series coefficients of a kind of generalized external angle of the inclusion boundary. Since the generalized external angle contains the Dirac delta singularity at corner points, we can determine the criterion for the existence of corner points on the inclusion boundary in terms of the geometric factors. We illustrate and validate our results with numerical examples computed to a high degree of precision using integral equation techniques, Nyström discretization, and recursively compressed inverse preconditioning.

Stress concentration for two nearly touching circular holes

We consider the plane elasticity problem for two circular holes. When two holes are close to touching, the stress concentration happens in the narrow gap region. In this paper, we characterize the stress singularity between the two holes by an explicit function. A new method of a singular asymptotic expansion for the Fourier series with slowing decaying coefficients is developed to investigate the asymptotic behavior of the stress.

A Joint Sparse Recovery Framework for Accurate Reconstruction of Inclusions in Elastic Media

A robust algorithm is proposed to reconstruct the spatial support and the Lamé parameters of multiple inclusions in a homogeneous background elastic material using a few measurements of the displacement field over a finite collection of boundary points. The algorithm does not require any linearization or iterative update of Green's function but still allows very accurate reconstruction. The breakthrough comes from a novel interpretation of Lippmann-Schwinger type integral representation of the displacement field in terms of unknown densities having common sparse support on the location of inclusions. Accordingly, the proposed algorithm consists of a two-step approach. First, the localization problem is recast as a joint sparse recovery problem that renders the densities and the inclusion support simultaneously. Then, a noise robust constrained optimization problem is formulated for the reconstruction of elastic parameters. An efficient algorithm is designed for numerical implementation using the Multiple Sparse Bayesian Learning (M-SBL) for joint sparse recovery problem and the Constrained Split Augmented Lagrangian Shrinkage Algorithm (C-SALSA) for the constrained optimization problem. The efficacy of the proposed framework is manifested through extensive numerical simulations. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first algorithm tailored for parameter reconstruction problems in elastic media using highly under-sampled data in the sense of Nyquist rate.

Shielding at a distance due to anomalous resonance in superlens with eccentric core

A cylindrical plasmonic structure with a concentric core exhibits an anomalous localized resonance which results in cloaking effects. Here we show that, if the structure has an eccentric core, a new kind of shielding effect can happen. In contrast to the conventional shielding device, our proposed structure can block the effect of external electrical sources even on a region which is not enclosed by any conducting materials. In fact, the shielded region is located at a distance from the device. We analytically investigate this phenomenon by using the möbius transformation via which an eccentric annulus is transformed into a concentric one. We also present several numerical examples.

Classification of spectra of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on planar domains with corners by resonance

We study spectral properties of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on planar domains with corners with particular emphasis on existence of continuous spectrum and pure point spectrum. We show that the rate of resonance at continuous spectrum is different from that at eigenvalues, and then derive a method to distinguish continuous spectrum from eigenvalues. We perform computational experiments using the method to see whether continuous spectrum and pure point spectrum appear on domains with corners. For the computations we use a modification of the Nyström method which makes it possible to construct high-order convergent discretizations of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on domains with corners. The results of experiments show that all three possible spectra, absolutely continuous spectrum, singularly continuous spectrum, and pure point spectrum, may appear depending on domains. We also prove rigorously two properties of spectrum which are suggested by numerical experiments: symmetry of spectrum (including continuous spectrum), and existence of eigenvalues on rectangles of high aspect ratio.
