Asymptotic analysis for superfocusing of the electric field in between two nearly touching metallic spheres

We consider the enhancement of electric field in the presence of two perfectly conducting spheres. When the two spheres get closer, the electric field have a much larger magnitude compared to the external field in the small gap region between the two spheres. The enhanced field can be arbitrary large with the generic blow-up rate $|ε\lnε|^{-1}$ in three dimensional space, where $ε$ is the distance between the spheres. In this paper we derive rigorously an asymptotic formula of the electric field consisting of elementary functions. The asymptotic formula explicitly characterizes superfocusing of the electric field in terms of the spheres radii, the distance between the spheres, and the external field. We illustrate our results with numerical calculations.

A non-iterative method for the electrical impedance tomography based on joint sparse recovery

The purpose of this paper is to propose a non-iterative method for the inverse conductivity problem of recovering multiple small anomalies from the boundary measurements. When small anomalies are buried in a conducting object, the electric potential values inside the object can be expressed by integrals of densities with a common sparse support on the location of anomalies. Based on this integral expression, we formulate the reconstruction problem of small anomalies as a joint sparse recovery and present an efficient non-iterative recovery algorithm of small anomalies. Furthermore, we also provide a slightly modified algorithm to reconstruct an extended anomaly. We validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm over the linearized method and the MUSIC algorithm by numerical simulations.

Spectral resolution of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on intersecting disks and analysis of plasmon resonance

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the spectral nature of the Neumann-Poincaré operator on the intersecting disks, which is a domain with the Lipschitz boundary. The complete spectral resolution of the operator is derived, which shows in particular that it admits only the absolutely continuous spectrum, no singularly continuous spectrum and no pure point spectrum. We then quantitatively analyze using the spectral resolution the plasmon resonance at the absolutely continuous spectrum.

Characterization of the gradient blow-up of the solution to the conductivity equation in the presence of adjacent circular inclusions

We consider the conductivity problem in the presence of adjacent circular inclusions having arbitrary constant conductivity. When two inclusions get closer and their conductivities degenerate to zero or infinity, the gradient of the solution can be arbitrary large. We characterize the gradient blow-up by deriving an explicit formula for the singular term of the solution in terms of the Lerch transcendent function. This derivation is valid for inclusions having arbitrary constant conductivity. We illustrate our results with numerical calculations.

Characterization of the electric field concentration between two adjacent spherical perfect conductors

When two perfectly conducting inclusions are located closely to each other, the electric field concentrates in a narrow region in between two inclusions, and becomes arbitrarily large as the distance between two inclusions tends to zero. The purpose of this paper is to derive an asymptotic formula of the concentration which completely characterizes the singular behavior of the electric field, when inclusions are balls of the same radii in three dimensions.

Enhancement of near-cloaking for the full Maxwell equations

In this paper, we consider near cloaking for the full Maxwell equations. We extend the recent results, where the quasi-static limit case and the Helmholtz equation are considered, to electromagnetic scattering problems. We construct very effective near cloaking structures for the electromagnetic scattering problem at a fixed frequency. These new structures are, before using the transformation optics, layered structures and are designed so that their first scattering coefficients vanish. Inside the cloaking region, any target has near-zero scattering cross section for a band of frequencies. We analytically show that our new construction significantly enhances the cloaking effect for the full Maxwell equations.

Enhancement of near-cloaking. Part II: the Helmholtz equation

The aim of this paper is to extend the method of improving cloaking structures in the conductivity to scattering problems. We construct very effective near-cloaking structures for the scattering problem at a fixed frequency. These new structures are, before using the transformation optics, layered structures and are designed so that their first scattering coefficients vanish. Inside the cloaking region, any target has near-zero scattering cross section for a band of frequencies. We analytically show that our new construction significantly enhances the cloaking effect for the Helmholtz equation.

Asymptotics and Computation of the Solution to the Conductivity Equation in the Presence of Adjacent Inclusions with Extreme Conductivities

When inclusions with extreme conductivity (insulator or perfect conductor) are closely located, the gradient of the solution to the conductivity equation can be arbitrarily large. And computation of the gradient is extremely challenging due to its nature of blow-up in a narrow region in between inclusions. In this paper we characterize explicitly the singular term of the solution when two circular inclusions with extreme conductivities are adjacent. Moreover, we show through numerical computations that the characterization of the singular term can be used efficiently for computation of the gradient in the presence adjacent inclusions.

Enhancement of Near Cloaking Using Generalized Polarization Tensors Vanishing Structures. Part I: The Conductivity Problem

The aim of this paper is to provide an original method of constructing very effective near-cloaking structures for the conductivity problem. These new structures are such that their first Generalized Polarization Tensors vanish. We show that this in particular significantly enhances the cloaking effect. We then present some numerical examples of Generalized Polarization Tensors vanishing structures.

Blow-up of Electric Fields between Closely Spaced Spherical Perfect Conductors

The electric field increases toward infinity in the narrow region between closely adjacent perfect conductors as they approach each other. Much attention has been devoted to the blow-up estimate, especially in two dimensions, for the practical relevance to high stress concentration in fiber-reinforced elastic composites. In this paper, we establish optimal estimates for the electric field associated with the distance between two spherical conductors in $n-${dimensional spaces for $n \geq 2$}. {The novelty of these estimates is that they explicitly describe the dependency of the blow-up rate on the geometric parameters: the radii of the conductors.}

An Asymptotic Formalism for Reconstructing Small Perturbations of Scatterers from Electric or Acoustic Far-Field Measurements

We consider the problem of determining the boundary perturbations of an object from far-field electric or acoustic measurements. Assuming that the unknown object boundary is a small perturbation of a circle, we develop a linearized relation between the far-field data that result from fixed Dirichlet boundary conditions, entering as parameters, and the shape of the object, entering as variables. This relation is used to find the Fourier coefficients of the perturbation of the shape and makes use of an expansion of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator.
