Reconfigurable continuous-zoom metalens in visible

Design of a conventional zoom lens is always challengeable because it requires not only sophisticated optical design strategy, but also complex and precise mechanical structures for lens adjustment. In this paper, we propose a continuous zoom lens consisting of two chiral geometric metasurfaces with dielectric nanobrick arrays sitting on a transparent substrate. The metalens can continuously vary the focal length by rotating either of the two metasurfaces along its optical axis without changing any other conditions. More importantly, because of the polarization dependence of the geometric metasurface, the positive and negative polarities are interchangeable in one identical metalens only by changing the handedness of the incident circularly polarized light, which can generate varyingfocal lengths ranging from negative infinity to positive infinity in principle. On account of its advantages of compactness, flexibility and easiness in design, the proposed zoom metalens can provide new perspectives for the development of continuous-zoom optical system and it can find applications in fields which require ultracompact and continuous-zoom imaging and reconfigurable beam wavefront steering.

Two constructions of asymptotically optimal codebooks via the trace functions

In this paper, we present two new constructions of complex codebooks with multiplicative characters, additive characters and trace functions over finite fields, and determine the maximal cross-correlation amplitude of these codebooks. We prove that the codebooks we constructed are asymptotically optimal with respect to the Welch bound. Moreover, in the first construction, we generalize the result in [28]. In the second construction, we generalize the results in [12], we can achieve Welch bound for any odd prime p, we also derive the whole distribution of their inner products. The parameters of these codebooks are new.

Raman spectroscopy of sodium chloride under high-pressure and high-temperature

The high-pressure and high-temperature behaviors of sodium chloride (NaCl) have the fundamental and application significance to the high pressure physics and chemistry. To explore the reactivity of NaCl at high pressure and high temperature, we compressed the NaCl samples to pressures up to 85 GPa and heated them to a temperature of 1800 by using the diamond anvil cell and the double-sided laser heating technology. Our investigation of Raman spectroscopy shows that NaCl decomposes to NaCl3 with orthorhombic Pnma structure plus possible Na3Cl with tetragonal P4/mmm structure above 31 GPa. It shows that the competition of the unusual Cl-Cl covalent bond and Na-Na metallic bond with the Na-Cl ionic bond at high pressure and high temperature may prefer the occurrence of the NaCl3 and Na3Cl combination. We speculate that the large temperature gradient in the NaCl sample layers in the diamond anvil cell experiments, which indicate a non-equilibrium state, is critical to the decomposition reaction of NaCl observed in this study. The catalytic effect of the used laser absorbing materials of transition metal oxides could be another factor to promote the chemical reaction of NaCl. The results of this investigation provide a new pathway to investigate the distinctive non-1:1 stoichiometric alkali metal-halogen compounds that may have exotic properties.

Molecular understanding of charge storage and charging dynamics in supercapacitors with MOF electrodes and ionic liquid electrolytes

We present a computational microscopy analysis (targeted molecular dynamics simulations) of the structure and performance of conductive metal organic framework (MOF) electrodes in supercapacitors with room temperature ionic liquids. The molecular modeling predicts the characteristic shapes of the potential dependence of electrode capacitance, relying on the structure of MOF electrodes and particularly how ions transport and reside in MOFs under polarization. Transmission line model was adopted to characterize the charging dynamics process and build up a bridge to evaluate the capacitive performance of practical supercapacitor devices at macroscale from the simulation-obtained data at nanoscale. Such nanoscale-to-macroscale analysis demonstrates the potential of MOF supercapacitors for achieving unprecedentedly high volumetric energy and power densities. The investigation gives molecular insights into the preferred structures of MOF for achieving these results, which could provide a blueprint for future experimental characterization of these new systems.

Overload Control for Scaling WeChat Microservices

Effective overload control for large-scale online service system is crucial for protecting the system backend from overload. Conventionally, the design of overload control is ad-hoc for individual service. However, service-specific overload control could be detrimental to the overall system due to intricate service dependencies or flawed implementation of service. Service developers usually have difficulty to accurately estimate the dynamics of actual workload during the development of service. Therefore, it is essential to decouple the overload control from service logic. In this paper, we propose DAGOR, an overload control scheme designed for the account-oriented microservice architecture. DAGOR is service agnostic and system-centric. It manages overload at the microservice granule such that each microservice monitors its load status in real time and triggers load shedding in a collaborative manner among its relevant services when overload is detected. DAGOR has been used in the WeChat backend for five years. Experimental results show that DAGOR can benefit high success rate of service even when the system is experiencing overload, while ensuring fairness in the overload control.

Overlapped Embedded Fragment Stochastic Density Functional Theory for Covalently Bonded Materials

The stochastic density functional theory (DFT) [Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 106402 (2013)] is a valuable linear scaling approach to Kohn-Sham DFT that does not rely on the sparsity of the density matrix. Linear (and often sub-linear) scaling is achieved by introducing a controlled statistical error in the density, energy and forces. The statistical error (noise) is proportional to the inverse square root of the number of stochastic orbitals and thus decreases slowly, however, by dividing the system to fragments that are embedded stochastically, the statistical error can be reduced significantly. This has been shown to provide remarkable results for non-covalently bonded systems, however, the application to covalently bonded systems had limited success, particularly for delocalized electrons. Here, we show that the statistical error in the density correlates with both the density and the density matrix of the system and propose a new fragmentation scheme that elegantly interpolates between overlapped fragments. We assess the performance of the approach for bulk silicon of varying supercell sizes (up to $N_{e}=16384$ electrons) and show that overlapped fragments reduce significantly the statistical noise even for systems with a delocalized density matrix.

Taylor dispersion in two-dimensional bacterial turbulence

In this work, single particle dispersion was analyzed for a bacterial turbulence by retrieving the virtual Lagrangian trajectory via numerical integration of the Lagrangian equation. High-order displacement functions were calculated for cases with and without mean velocity effect. Two-regime power-law behavior for short and long time evolutions were identified experimentally, which were separated by the Lagrangian integral time. For the case with the mean velocity effect, the experimental Hurst numbers were determined to be $0.94$ and $0.97$ for short and long times evolutions, respectively. For the case without the mean velocity effect, the values were $0.88$ and $0.58$. Moreover, very weak intermittency correction was detected. All measured Hurst number were above $1/2$, the value of the normal diffusion, which verifies the super-diffusion behavior of living fluid. This behavior increases the efficiency of bacteria to obtain food.

Improving Wireless Physical Layer Security via D2D Communication

This paper investigates the physical layer security issue of a device-to-device (D2D) underlaid cellular system with a multi-antenna base station (BS) and a multi-antenna eavesdropper. To investigate the potential of D2D communication in improving network security, the conventional network without D2D users (DUs) is first considered. It is shown that the problem of maximizing the sum secrecy rate (SR) of cellular users (CUs) for this special case can be transformed to an assignment problem and optimally solved. Then, a D2D underlaid network is considered. Since the joint optimization of resource block (RB) allocation, CU-DU matching and power control is a mixed integer programming, the problem is difficult to handle. Hence, the RB assignment process is first conducted by ignoring D2D communication, and an iterative algorithm is then proposed to solve the remaining problem. Simulation results show that the sum SR of CUs can be greatly increased by D2D communication, and compared with the existing schemes, a better secrecy performance can be obtained by the proposed algorithms.

Performance Analysis of User-centric Virtual Cell Dense Networks over mmWave Channels

This paper analyzes the ergodic capacity of a user-centric virtual cell (VC) dense network, where multiple access points (APs) form a VC for each user equipment (UE) and transmit data cooperatively over millimeter wave (mmWave) channels. Different from traditional microwave radio communications, blockage phenomena have an important effect on mmWave transmissions. Accordingly, we adopt a distance-dependent line-of-sight (LOS) probability function and model the locations of the LOS and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) APs as two independent non-homogeneous Poisson point processes (PPP). Invoking this model in a VC dense network, new expressions are derived for the downlink ergodic capacity, accounting for: blockage, small-scale fading and AP cooperation. In particular, we compare the ergodic capacity for different types of fading distributions, including Rayleigh and Nakagami. Numerical results validate our analytical expressions and show that AP cooperation can provide notable capacity gain, especially in low-AP-density regions.

We jointly optimize the UAV's flying altitude, antenna beamwidth, UAV's location and ground terminals' allocated bandwidth and transmit power to minimize the sum uplink power subject to the minimal rate demand. An iterative algorithm is proposed with low complexity to obtain a suboptimal solution. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve good performance in terms of uplink sum power saving.

Kinetics of Ion Transport in Ionic Liquids: Two Dynamical Diffusion States

Using classical molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the mobility of ions in [Bmim][TFSI], a typical room temperature ionic liquid. Analyzing the trajectories of individual cations and anions, we estimate the time that ions spend in bound, clustered states, and when the ions move quasi-freely. Using this information, we evaluate the average portion of free ions that dominate conductivity. The amount of thus defined free ions comprises 15-25%, monotonically increasing with temperature in the range of 300-600 K, with the rest of the ions being temporarily bound, moving rather in local potentials. The conductivities as a function of temperature, calculated from electric current autocorrelation functions, reproduce reported experimental data well. Interestingly, for free ions the Nernst-Einstein relationship between the mobility and diffusion coefficient holds fairly well. In analogy with electronic semiconductors, one can speak about an ionic semiconductor model for ionic liquids with valence (or excitonic) and conduction band states for ions, separated by an energy gap. The obtained band gap for the ionic liquid is, however, very small, about 0.026 eV, allowing for easy interchanges between the two dynamic states.

Robust Beamforming with Pilot Reuse Scheduling in a Heterogeneous Cloud Radio Access Network

This paper considers a downlink ultra-dense heterogeneous cloud radio access network (H-CRAN) which guarantees seamless coverage and can provide high date rates. In order to reduce channel state information (CSI) feedback overhead, incomplete inter-cluster CSI is considered, i.e., each remote radio head (RRH) or macro base station (MBS) only measures the CSI from user equipments (UEs) in its serving cluster. To reduce pilot consumption, pilot reuse among UEs is assumed, resulting in imperfect intra-cluster CSI. A two-stage optimization problem is then formulated. In the first stage, a pilot scheduling algorithm is proposed to minimize the sum mean square error (MSE) of all channel estimates. Specifically, the minimum number of required pilots along with a feasible pilot allocation solution are first determined by applying the Dsatur algorithm, and adjustments based on the defined level of pilot contamination are then carried out for further improvement. Based on the pilot allocation result obtained in the first stage, the second stage aims to maximize the sum spectral efficiency (SE) of the network by optimizing the beam-vectors. Due to incomplete inter-cluster CSI and imperfect intra-cluster CSI, an explicit expression of each UE's achievable rate is unavailable. Hence, a lower bound on the achievable rate is derived based on Jensen's inequality, and an alternative robust transmission design (RTD) algorithm along with its distributed realization are then proposed to maximize the derived tight lower bound. Simulation results show that compared with existing algorithms, the system performance can be greatly improved by the proposed algorithms in terms of both sum MSE and sum SE.

Robust Transmission Design for Multi-Cell D2D Underlaid Cellular Networks

This paper investigates the robust transmission design (RTD) of a multi-cell device-to-device (D2D) underlaid cellular network with imperfect channel state information (CSI). The bounded model is adopted to characterize the CSI impairment and the aim is to maximize the worst-case sum rate of the system. To protect cellular communications, it is assumed that the interference from all D2D transmitters to each base station (BS) is power-limited. It is first shown that the worst-case signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) of each D2D link can be obtained directly, while that of cellular links cannot be similarly found since the channel estimation error vectors of cellular links are coupled in the SINR expressions. To solve the nonconvex problem, the objective function of the original problem is replaced with its lower bound, and the resulted problem is decomposed into multiple semidefinite programming (SDP) subproblems which are convex and have computationally efficient solutions. An iterative RTD algorithm is then proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution. Simulation results show that D2D communication can significantly increase the performance of the conventional cellular systems while causing tolerable interference to cellular users. In addition, the proposed RTD algorithm outperforms the conventional non-robust transmission design greatly in terms of network spectral efficiency.

Compressive Sensing Based User Clustering for Downlink NOMA Systems with Decoding Power

This letter investigates joint power control and user clustering for downlink non-orthogonal multiple access systems. Our aim is to minimize the total power consumption by taking into account not only the conventional transmission power but also the decoding power of the users. To solve this optimization problem, it is firstly transformed into an equivalent problem with tractable constraints. Then, an efficient algorithm is proposed to tackle the equivalent problem by using the techniques of reweighted 1-norm minimization and majorization-minimization. Numerical results validate the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the conventional algorithms including the popular matching-based algorithm.

Optimal Fairness-Aware Time and Power Allocation in Wireless Powered Communication Networks

In this paper, we consider the sum $α$-fair utility maximization problem for joint downlink (DL) and uplink (UL) transmissions of a wireless powered communication network (WPCN) via time and power allocation. In the DL, the users with energy harvesting receiver architecture decode information and harvest energy based on simultaneous wireless information and power transfer. While in the UL, the users utilize the harvested energy for information transmission, and harvest energy when other users transmit UL information. We show that the general sum $α$-fair utility maximization problem can be transformed into an equivalent convex one. Tradeoffs between sum rate and user fairness can be balanced via adjusting the value of $α$. In particular, for zero fairness, i.e., $α=0$, the optimal allocated time for both DL and UL is proportional to the overall available transmission power. Tradeoffs between sum rate and user fairness are presented through simulations.

Energy Efficient Resource Allocation in Machine-to-Machine Communications with Multiple Access and Energy Harvesting for IoT

This paper studies energy efficient resource allocation for a machine-to-machine (M2M) enabled cellular network with non-linear energy harvesting, especially focusing on two different multiple access strategies, namely non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and time division multiple access (TDMA). Our goal is to minimize the total energy consumption of the network via joint power control and time allocation while taking into account circuit power consumption. For both NOMA and TDMA strategies, we show that it is optimal for each machine type communication device (MTCD) to transmit with the minimum throughput, and the energy consumption of each MTCD is a convex function with respect to the allocated transmission time. Based on the derived optimal conditions for the transmission power of MTCDs, we transform the original optimization problem for NOMA to an equivalent problem which can be solved suboptimally via an iterative power control and time allocation algorithm. Through an appropriate variable transformation, we also transform the original optimization problem for TDMA to an equivalent tractable problem, which can be iteratively solved. Numerical results verify the theoretical findings and demonstrate that NOMA consumes less total energy than TDMA at low circuit power regime of MTCDs, while at high circuit power regime of MTCDs TDMA achieves better network energy efficiency than NOMA.

Unfolding Hidden Barriers by Active Enhanced Sampling

Collective variable (CV) or order parameter based enhanced sampling algorithms have achieved great success due to their ability to efficiently explore the rough potential energy landscapes of complex systems. However, the degeneracy of microscopic configurations, originating from the orthogonal space perpendicular to the CVs, is likely to shadow "hidden barriers" and greatly reduce the efficiency of CV-based sampling. Here we demonstrate that systematic machine learning CV, through enhanced sampling, can iteratively lift such degeneracies on the fly. We introduce an active learning scheme that consists of a parametric CV learner based on deep neural network and a CV-based enhanced sampler. Our active enhanced sampling (AES) algorithm is capable of identifying the least informative regions based on a historical sample, forming a positive feedback loop between the CV learner and sampler. This approach is able to globally preserve kinetic characteristics by incrementally enhancing both sample completeness and CV quality.

Power Control for Multi-Cell Networks with Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

In this paper, we investigate the problems of sum power minimization and sum rate maximization for multi-cell networks with non-orthogonal multiple access. Considering the sum power minimization, we obtain closed-form solutions to the optimal power allocation strategy and then successfully transform the original problem to a linear one with a much smaller size, which can be optimally solved by using the standard interference function. To solve the nonconvex sum rate maximization problem, we first prove that the power allocation problem for a single cell is a convex problem. By analyzing the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions, the optimal power allocation for users in a single cell is derived in closed form. Based on the optimal solution in each cell, a distributed algorithm is accordingly proposed to acquire efficient solutions. Numerical results verify our theoretical findings showing the superiority of our solutions compared to the orthogonal frequency division multiple access and broadcast channel.
