BAANet: Learning Bi-directional Adaptive Attention Gates for Multispectral Pedestrian Detection

Thermal infrared (TIR) image has proven effectiveness in providing temperature cues to the RGB features for multispectral pedestrian detection. Most existing methods directly inject the TIR modality into the RGB-based framework or simply ensemble the results of two modalities. This, however, could lead to inferior detection performance, as the RGB and TIR features generally have modality-specific noise, which might worsen the features along with the propagation of the network. Therefore, this work proposes an effective and efficient cross-modality fusion module called Bi-directional Adaptive Attention Gate (BAA-Gate). Based on the attention mechanism, the BAA-Gate is devised to distill the informative features and recalibrate the representations asymptotically. Concretely, a bi-direction multi-stage fusion strategy is adopted to progressively optimize features of two modalities and retain their specificity during the propagation. Moreover, an adaptive interaction of BAA-Gate is introduced by the illumination-based weighting strategy to adaptively adjust the recalibrating and aggregating strength in the BAA-Gate and enhance the robustness towards illumination changes. Considerable experiments on the challenging KAIST dataset demonstrate the superior performance of our method with satisfactory speed.

Optimization of FLASH Proton Beams Using a Track-Repeating Algorithm

Methods: A phase space file in a plane at 202 mm downstream of the beam exit window is generated through tuning parameters to match FDC results with measured or MCNPX Monte Carlo-simulated integrated depth-dose distribution (IDD) and lateral dose profiles. To spread out the Bragg peak, widen the beam and reduce the penumbra, a ridge filter (RF), a high-Z material scatterer and a collimator with compensator are inserted in the beam path and their shapes and sizes have been optimized. The FDC calculations are validated by comparing Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations. In addition, a set of algorithms to automatically choose the optimum dimensions of the beam shaping elements is developed and tested using the same beams. At the last part, dose rates for optimized beams were estimated by scaling their dose distributions to that of their original beams. Results: The optimized 86.4 MeV beam had an 8.5 mm wide spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP) (proximal 90% to distal 90% of the maximum dose), 14.5 mm, 12.0 mm and 11.0 lateral widths with dose above 50%, 80% and 90% respectively and a 2.5 mm penumbra from 80% to 20% in the lateral profile for the energy. The 159.5 MeV beam had a SOBP of 39.0 mm and the lateral widths with dose above 50%, 80% and 90% of 20.5 mm, 15.0 and 12.5 mm when the source to surface distance (SSD) was 550 mm. Wider lateral widths was obtained with increased SSD. The FDC calculations had passing rates higher than 96% using 3mm/3% as the gamma-index criterion comparing with Geant4 simulations for both energies. The set of automatic algorithms can choose the proper dimensions for the high-density scatterer, RF, collimator and compensator efficiently. And the optimized 159.5 MeV beam with different SDDs had entrance dose rate higher than 40 Gy/s if the entrance dose rate of the original beam was 150 Gy/s.

Facet Dependent Topological Phase Transition in Bi4Br4

The realization of the coexistence of various topologically nontrivial surface states in one material is expected to lay a foundation for new electric applications with selective robust spin current. Here we apply the magnetoconductivity characteristic and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to visualize the surface-selected electronic features evolution of quasi-one-dimensional material Bi4Br4. The transport measurements indicate the quantum interference correction to conductivity possesses symbolic spin rotational characteristic correlated to the value of Berry phase with the effects of weak localization and weak antilocalization for (001) and (100) surfaces, respectively. The ARPES spectra provide the experimental evidence for quasi-one-dimensional massless Dirac surface state at the side (100) surface and anisotropic massive Dirac surface state at the top (001) surface, respectively, which is highly coincide with the angle-dependent scaling behavior of magnetoconductivity. Our results reveal the facet dependent topological phases in quasi-one-dimensional Bi4Br4, stimulating the further investigations of this dual topology classes and the applications of the feasible technologies of topological spintronics.

BBS: A Blockchain Big-Data Sharing System

Chain of custody is needed to document the sequence of custody of sensitive big data. In this paper, we design a blockchain big-data sharing system (BBS) based on Hyperledger Fabric. We denote the data stored outside of a ledger for sharing as "off-state" and "big data" (referring to extremely large data) is in this category. In our off-state sharing protocol, a sender registers a file with BBS for sharing. To acquire the file, an authenticated and authorized receiver has to use transactions and interacts with BBS in four phases, including the file transfer request, encrypted file transfer, key retrieval, and file decryption. The corresponding transactions are recorded in the ledger and serve as chain of custody to document the trail of the data. Compared with related work, BBS can perform the four phases autonomously. It utilizes the permissioned blockchain, i.e. Hyperledger Fabric, for access control and can defeat dishonest receivers. We design and implement a prototype of BBS for big file sharing. Extensive experiments were performed to validate its feasibility and performance.

The Sample of Red Supergiants in Twelve Low-Mass Galaxies of the Local Group

This work establishes the most complete sample of red supergiants (RSGs) in twelve low-mass galaxies (WLM, IC 10, NGC 147, NGC 185, IC 1613, Leo A, Sextans B, Sextans A, NGC 6822, Pegasus Dwarf, SMC and LMC) of the Local Group, which forms the solid basis to study the properties of RSGs as well as the star formation rate (SFR) and initial mass function (IMF) of the galaxies. After removing the foreground dwarf stars by their obvious branch in the near-infrared color-color diagram ($(J-H)_0/(H-K)_0$) with the UKIRT/WFCAM and 2MASS photometry as well as the Gaia/EDR3 measurements of proper motion and parallax, RSGs are identified from their location in the color-magnitude diagram $(J-K)_{0}/K_{0}$ of the member stars of the specific galaxy. A total of 2,190 RSGs are found in ten dwarf galaxies, and additionally 4,823 and 2,138 RSGs in the LMC and SMC respectively. The locations of the tip of the red giant branch in the $(J-K)_{0}/K_{0}$ diagram are determined to serve as an indicator of the metallicity and distance modulus of the galaxies.

Self-supervised Contrastive Attributed Graph Clustering

Attributed graph clustering, which learns node representation from node attribute and topological graph for clustering, is a fundamental but challenging task for graph analysis. Recently, methods based on graph contrastive learning (GCL) have obtained impressive clustering performance on this task. Yet, we observe that existing GCL-based methods 1) fail to benefit from imprecise clustering labels; 2) require a post-processing operation to get clustering labels; 3) cannot solve out-of-sample (OOS) problem. To address these issues, we propose a novel attributed graph clustering network, namely Self-supervised Contrastive Attributed Graph Clustering (SCAGC). In SCAGC, by leveraging inaccurate clustering labels, a self-supervised contrastive loss, which aims to maximize the similarities of intra-cluster nodes while minimizing the similarities of inter-cluster nodes, are designed for node representation learning. Meanwhile, a clustering module is built to directly output clustering labels by contrasting the representation of different clusters. Thus, for the OOS nodes, SCAGC can directly calculate their clustering labels. Extensive experimental results on four benchmark datasets have shown that SCAGC consistently outperforms 11 competitive clustering methods.

Selective hydrogenation improves interface properties of high-k dielectrics on 2D semiconductors

The integration of high-k dielectrics with two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors is a critical step towards high-performance nanoelectronics, which however remains challenging due to high density of interface states and the damage to the monolayer 2D semiconductors. In this study, we propose a selective hydrogenation strategy to improve the interface properties while do not affect the 2D semiconductors. Using the interface of monolayer MoS2 and silicon nitride as an example, we show substantially improved interface properties for electronic applications after the interfacial hydrogenation, as evidenced by reduced inhomogeneous charge redistribution, increased band offset, and untouched electronic properties of MoS2. Interestingly, this hydrogenation process selectively occurs only at the silicon nitride surface and is compatible with the current semiconductor fabrication process. We further show that this strategy is general and applicable to other interfaces between high-k dielectrics and 2D semiconductors such as HfO2 on the monolayer MoS2. Our results demonstrate a simple yet viable way to improve the interfacial properties for integrating many high-k dielectrics on a broad range of two-dimensional transition metal disulfide semiconductors.

Large-Gap Quantum Spin Hall State and Temperature-Induced Lifshitz Transition in Bi4Br4

Searching for new quantum spin Hall insulators with large fully opened energy gap to overcome the thermal disturbance at room temperature has attracted tremendous attention due to the one-dimensional (1D) spin-momentum locked topological edge states serving as dissipationless channels for the practical applications in low consumption electronics and high performance spintronics. Here, we report the investigation of topological nature of monolayer Bi4Br4 by the techniques of scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The topological non-triviality of 1D edge state integrals within the large bulk energy gap (~ 0.2 eV) is revealed by the first-principle calculations. The ARPES measurements at different temperature show a temperature-induced Lifshitz transition, corresponding to the resistivity anomaly caused by the shift of chemical potential. The connection between the emergency of superconductivity and the Lifshitz transition is discussed.

Recall and Learn: A Memory-augmented Solver for Math Word Problems

In this article, we tackle the math word problem, namely, automatically answering a mathematical problem according to its textual description. Although recent methods have demonstrated their promising results, most of these methods are based on template-based generation scheme which results in limited generalization capability. To this end, we propose a novel human-like analogical learning method in a recall and learn manner. Our proposed framework is composed of modules of memory, representation, analogy, and reasoning, which are designed to make a new exercise by referring to the exercises learned in the past. Specifically, given a math word problem, the model first retrieves similar questions by a memory module and then encodes the unsolved problem and each retrieved question using a representation module. Moreover, to solve the problem in a way of analogy, an analogy module and a reasoning module with a copy mechanism are proposed to model the interrelationship between the problem and each retrieved question. Extensive experiments on two well-known datasets show the superiority of our proposed algorithm as compared to other state-of-the-art competitors from both overall performance comparison and micro-scope studies.

Searching for orbital decay in a heartbeat star system KIC 3766353

Theory suggests that the orbits of a large fraction of binary systems, including planet-star binary systems, shrink by few orders of magnitude after formation. But so far, only one hot Jupiter with tidally-driven orbital decay has been found by transit timing variations. We propose to search for orbital decay companions in heartbeat star systems because the orbital angular momentum is effectively transferred to the host star causing tidal dissipation. KIC 3766353 is one of the heartbeat stars with tidally excited oscillations. We acquired the primary and the secondary eclipse time variations from the \textit{Kepler} photometric light curves. Timing analysis shows that KIC 3766353 is a hierarchical triple system with a hidden third body and a red dwarf (mass $0.35\ M_{\odot}$, radius $0.34\ R_{\odot}$) in its inner orbit. The minimum mass of the third body is $\sim 0.26 \ M_{\odot}$, and the distance from the inner orbital is $\sim 111.4 \ R_{\odot}$. The period decay rate of the red dwarf is approximately 358 ms yr$^{-1}$. The combined effects of the light-travel time and the orbital decay lead to the observed timing variations. Future monitoring with a long time base-line observations is required to delve into the contributions of these two effects.

BOSS: A Blockchain Off-State Sharing System

Blockchain has been applied to data sharing to ensure the integrity of data and chain of custody. Sharing big data such as large biomedical data files is a challenge to blockchain systems since the ledger is not designed to maintain big files, access control is an issue, and users may be dishonest. We call big data such as big files stored outside of a ledger that includes the blockchain and world state at a blockchain node as "off-state" and propose an off-state sharing protocol for a blockchain system to share big data between pairs of nodes. In our protocol, only encrypted files are transferred. The cryptographic key is stored in the world state in a secure way and can be accessed only by authorized parties. A receiver has to request the corresponding cryptographic key from the sender to decrypt such encrypted files. All requests are run through transactions to establish reliable chain of custody. We design and implement a prototypical blockchain off-state sharing system, BOSS, with Hyperledger Fabric. Extensive experiments were performed to validate the feasibility and performance of BOSS.

The Measurement of Dynamic Tidal Contribution to Apsidal Motion in Heartbeat Star KIC 4544587

Apsidal motion is a gradual shift in the position of periastron. The impact of dynamic tides on apsidal motion has long been debated, because the contribution could not be quantified due to the lack of high quality observations. KIC 4544587 with tidally excited oscillations has been observed by \textit{Kepler} high-precision photometric data based on long time baseline and short-cadence schema. In this paper, we compute the rate of apsidal motion that arises from the dynamic tides as $19.05\pm 1.70$ mrad yr$^{-1}$ via tracking the orbital phase shifts of tidally excited oscillations. We also calculate the procession rate of the orbit due to the Newtonian and general relativistic contribution as $21.49 \pm 2.8$ and $2.4 \pm 0.06$ mrad yr$^{-1}$, respectively. The sum of these three factors is in excellent agreement with the total observational rate of apsidal motion $42.97 \pm 0.18$ mrad yr$^{-1}$ measured by eclipse timing variations. The tidal effect accounts for about 44\% of the overall observed apsidal motion and is comparable to that of the Newtonian term. Dynamic tides have a significant contribution to the apsidal motion. The analysis method mentioned in this paper presents an alternative approach to measuring the contribution of the dynamic tides quantitatively.

Structure dependent and strain tunable magnetic ordering in ultrathin chromium telluride

Two-dimensional (2D) chromium tellurides have attracted considerable research interest for their high Curie temperatures. Their magnetic properties have been found diverse in various experiments, the understanding of which however remains limited. In this work, we report that the magnetic ordering of ultrathin chromium tellurides is structure dependent and can be tuned by external strain. Based on first-principles calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we show long-range stable magnetism with high and low Curie temperature, and short-range magnetism in 2D Cr5Te8, CrTe2, and Cr2Te3 layers, respectively. We further find that ferromagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition can be realized by 2% compressive strain for CrTe2 and 2% tensile strain for Cr2Te3, and their magnetic easy axis is tuned from out-of-plane to in-plane by the medium tensile and compressive strain. This strain dependent magnetic coupling is found to be related to Cr-Cr direct exchange and the change of magnetic anisotropy is understood by the atom and orbital resolved magnetic anisotropy energy and second order perturbation theory. Our results reveal the important roles of the structure and strain in determining the magnetic ordering in 2D chromium telluride, shedding light on understanding of the diverse magnetic properties observed in experiments.

Few-shot Unsupervised Domain Adaptation with Image-to-class Sparse Similarity Encoding

This paper investigates a valuable setting called few-shot unsupervised domain adaptation (FS-UDA), which has not been sufficiently studied in the literature. In this setting, the source domain data are labelled, but with few-shot per category, while the target domain data are unlabelled. To address the FS-UDA setting, we develop a general UDA model to solve the following two key issues: the few-shot labeled data per category and the domain adaptation between support and query sets. Our model is general in that once trained it will be able to be applied to various FS-UDA tasks from the same source and target domains. Inspired by the recent local descriptor based few-shot learning (FSL), our general UDA model is fully built upon local descriptors (LDs) for image classification and domain adaptation. By proposing a novel concept called similarity patterns (SPs), our model not only effectively considers the spatial relationship of LDs that was ignored in previous FSL methods, but also makes the learned image similarity better serve the required domain alignment. Specifically, we propose a novel IMage-to-class sparse Similarity Encoding (IMSE) method. It learns SPs to extract the local discriminative information for classification and meanwhile aligns the covariance matrix of the SPs for domain adaptation. Also, domain adversarial training and multi-scale local feature matching are performed upon LDs. Extensive experiments conducted on a multi-domain benchmark dataset DomainNet demonstrates the state-of-the-art performance of our IMSE for the novel setting of FS-UDA. In addition, for FSL, our IMSE can also show better performance than most of recent FSL methods on miniImageNet.

Searching Water Megamasers By Using Mid-infrared Spectroscopy (I): Possible Mid-infrared Indicators

Water megamasers at 22 GHz with a gas disk configuration in galaxies provide the most precise measurements of supermassive black hole masses, as well as independent constraints on the Hubble constant in the nearby universe. The existence of other maser types, such as jet or outflow masers, represents another tracer for AGN science. However, the detection rate of water megamasers in galaxies is extremely low. Over 40 years, only $\sim$ 160 galaxies are found to harbour maser emission, and $\sim$ 30\% of them show features in their maser emission that indicate a disk-like geometry. Therefore, increasing the detection rate of masers is a crucial task to allow expanding on maser studies. We present a comparison of mid-infrared spectroscopic data between a maser galaxy sample and a Seyfert 2 control sample. We find that maser galaxies show significant peculiarities in their mid-infrared spectra: (1) Maser galaxies tend to present stronger silicate absorption at $τ$ 9.7 $μ$m than the control sample, (2) PAH 11.3 $μ$m emission in maser galaxies is much weaker than in the control sample, (3) spectral indices at 20-30 $μ$m are steeper in maser galaxies than in the control sample and tend to be mid-infrared enhanced population. We conclude that there may be good indicators in mid-infrared and far-infrared which could differentiate maser and non-maser Seyfert 2 galaxies. Upcoming infrared facilities, such as the James Webb Space Telescope, may be able to exploit these and other useful criteria and tracers for water megamaser observations.

Magnetic-field-induced robust zero Hall plateau state in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ Chern insulator

The intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 provides an ideal platform for exploring exotic topological quantum phenomena. Recently, the Chern insulator and axion insulator phases have been realized in few-layer MnBi2Te4 devices at low magnetic field regime. However, the fate of MnBi2Te4 in high magnetic field has never been explored in experiment. In this work, we report transport studies of exfoliated MnBi2Te4 flakes in pulsed magnetic fields up to 61.5 T. In the high-field limit, the Chern insulator phase with Chern number C = -1 evolves into a robust zero Hall resistance plateau state. Nonlocal transport measurements and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the charge transport in the zero Hall plateau state is conducted by two counter-propagating edge states that arise from the combined effects of Landau levels and large Zeeman effect in strong magnetic fields. Our result demonstrates the intricate interplay among intrinsic magnetic order, external magnetic field, and nontrivial band topology in MnBi2Te4.

Superconductivity in Layered van der Waals Hydrogenated Germanene at High Pressure

Structural and superconducting transitions of layered van der Waals (vdW) hydrogenated germanene (GeH) were observed under high-pressure compression and decompression processes. GeH possesses a superconducting transition at critical temperature (Tc) of 5.41 K at 8.39 GPa. A crystalline to amorphous transition occurs at 16.80 GPa while superconductivity remains. An abnormally increased Tc up to 6.1 K has been observed in the decompression process while the GeH remained amorphous. Thorough in-situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction and in-situ high-pressure Raman spectroscopy with the density functional theory simulations suggest that the superconductivity of GeH should be attributed to the increased density of states at the Fermi level as well as the enhanced electron-phonon coupling effect under high pressure. The decompression-driven superconductivity enhancement arises from pressure-induced phonon softening related to an in-plane Ge-Ge phonon mode. As an amorphous metal hydride superconductor, GeH provides a platform to study amorphous hydride superconductivity in layered vdW materials.

Hidden Frustration in Double-Perovskite CaFeTi$_2$O$_6$

We study the magnetic properties of CaFeTi$_2$O$_6$ (CFTO) by high-field magnetization and specific heat measurements. While the magnetic susceptibility data yield a vanishingly small Curie-Weiss temperature, the magnetic moments are not fully polarized in magnetic field up to 60 T, which reveals a large spin exchange energy scale. Yet, the system shows no long range magnetic order but a spin-glass-like state below 5.5 K in zero field, indicating strong magnetic frustration in this system. Applying magnetic field gradually suppresses the spin-glass-like state and gives rise to a potential quantum spin liquid state whose low-temperature specific heat exhibits a $T^{1.6}$ power-law. Crucially, conventional mechanisms for frustration do not apply to this system as it possesses neither apparent geometrical frustration nor exchange frustration. We suggest that the orbital modulation of exchange interaction is likely the source of hidden frustration in CFTO, and its full characterization may open a new route in the quest for quantum spin liquids.
