Design of Placement Delivery Arrays for Coded Caching with Small Subpacketizations and Flexible Memory Sizes

Coded caching is an emerging technique to reduce the data transmission load during the peak-traffic times. In such a scheme, each file in the data center or library is usually divided into a number of packets to pursue a low broadcasting rate based on the designed placements at each user's cache. However, the implementation complexity of this scheme increases as the number of packets increases. It is crucial to design a scheme with a small subpacketization level, while maintaining a relatively low transmission rate. It is known that the design of caches in users (i.e., the placement phase) and broadcasting (i.e., the delivery phase) can be unified in one matrix, namely the placement delivery array (PDA). This paper proposes a novel PDA construction by selecting proper orthogonal arrays (POAs), which generalizes some known constructions but with a more flexible memory size. Based on the proposed PDA construction, an effective transformation is further proposed to enable a coded caching scheme to have a smaller subpacketization level. Moreover, two new coded caching schemes with the coded placement are considered. It is shown that the proposed schemes yield a lower subpacketization level and transmission rate over some existing schemes.

Novel Frameworks for Coded Caching via Cartesian Product with Reduced Subpacketization

Caching prefetches some library content at users' memories during the off-peak times (i.e., {\it placement phase}), such that the number of transmissions during the peak-traffic times (i.e., {\it delivery phase}) are reduced. A coded caching strategy was originally proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen (MN) leading to a multicasting gain compared to the conventional uncoded caching, where each message in the delivery phase is useful to multiple users simultaneously. However, the MN coded caching scheme suffers from the high subpacketization which makes it impractical. In order to reduce the subpacketization while retain the multicast opportunities in the delivery phase, Yan et al. proposed a combinatorial structure called placement delivery array (PDA) to design coded caching schemes. In this paper, we propose two novel frameworks for constructing PDA via Cartesian product, which constructs a PDA for $mK_1$ users by the $m$-fold Cartesian product of a PDA for $K_1$ users. By applying the proposed frameworks to some existing PDAs, three novel caching schemes are obtained which can significantly reduce the subpacketization of the MN scheme while slightly increasing the needed number of transmissions. For instance, for the third scheme which works for any number of users and any memory regime, while reducing the coded caching gain by one, the needed subpacketization is at most $O\left(\sqrt{\frac{K}{q}}2^{-\frac{K}{q}}\right)$ of that of the MN scheme, where $K$ is the number of users, $0<z/q<1$ is the memory ratio of each user, and $q,z$ are coprime.

Coded Caching for Combination Networks with Multiaccess

In a traditional $(H, r)$ combination network, each user is connected to a unique set of $r$ relays. However, few research efforts to consider $(H, r, u)$ multiaccess combination network problem where each $u$ users are connected to a unique set of $r$ relays. A naive strategy to obtain a coded caching scheme for $(H, r, u)$ multiaccess combination network is by $u$ times repeated application of a coded caching scheme for a traditional $(H, r)$ combination network. Obviously, the transmission load for each relay of this trivial scheme is exactly $u$ times that of the original scheme, which implies that as the number of users multiplies, the transmission load for each relay will also multiply. Therefore, it is very meaningful to design a coded caching scheme for $(H, r, u)$ multiaccess combination network with lower transmission load for each relay. In this paper, by directly applying the well known coding method (proposed by Zewail and Yener) for $(H, r)$ combination network, a coded caching scheme (ZY scheme) for $(H, r, u)$ multiaccess combination network is obtained. However, the subpacketization of this scheme has exponential order with the number of users, which leads to a high implementation complexity. In order to reduce the subpacketization, a direct construction of a coded caching scheme for $(H, r, u)$ multiaccess combination network is proposed by means of Combinational Design Theory, where the parameter $u$ must be a combinatorial number. For arbitrary parameter $u$, a hybrid construction of a coded caching scheme for $(H, r, u)$ multiaccess combination network is proposed based on our direct construction. Theoretical and numerical analysis show that our last two schemes have smaller transmission load for each relay compared with the trivial scheme, and have much lower subpacketization compared with ZY scheme.

Multiaccess Coded Caching with Private Demands

Recently Hachem et al. formulated a multiaccess coded caching model which consists of a central server connected to $K$ users via an error-free shared link, and $K$ cache-nodes. Each cache-node is equipped with a local cache and each user can access $L$ neighbouring cache-nodes with a cyclic wrap-around fashion. In this paper, we take the privacy of the users' demands into consideration, i.e., each user can only get its required file and can not get any information about the demands of other users. By storing some private keys at the cache-nodes, we propose a novel transformation approach to transform a non-private multiaccess coded caching scheme into a private multiaccess coded caching scheme.

A Novel Transformation Approach of Shared-link Coded Caching Schemes for Multiaccess Networks

This paper considers the multiaccess coded caching systems formulated by Hachem et al., including a central server containing $N$ files connected to $K$ cache-less users through an error-free shared link, and $K$ cache-nodes, each equipped with a cache memory size of $M$ files. Each user has access to $L$ neighbouring cache-nodes with a cyclic wrap-around topology. The coded caching scheme proposed by Hachem et al. suffers from the case that $L$ does not divide $K$, where the needed number of transmissions (a.k.a. load) is at most four times the load expression for the case where $L$ divides $K$. Our main contribution is to propose a novel {\it transformation} approach to smartly extend the schemes satisfying some conditions for the well known shared-link caching systems to the multiaccess caching systems. Then we can get many coded caching schemes with different subpacketizations for multiaccess coded caching system. These resulting schemes have the maximum local caching gain (i.e., the cached contents stored at any $L$ neighbouring cache-nodes are different such that the number of retrieval packets by each user from the connected cache-nodes is maximal) and the same coded caching gain as the original schemes. Applying the transformation approach to the well-known shared-link coded caching scheme proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, we obtain a new multiaccess coded caching scheme that achieves the same load as the scheme of Hachem et al. but for any system parameters. Under the constraint of the cache placement used in this new multiaccess coded caching scheme, our delivery strategy is approximately optimal when $K$ is sufficiently large. Finally, we also show that the transmission load of the proposed scheme can be further reduced by compressing the multicast message.

A framework of constructing placement delivery arrays for centralized coded caching

In caching system, it is desirable to design a coded caching scheme with the transmission load $R$ and subpacketization $F$ as small as possible, in order to improve efficiency of transmission in the peak traffic times and to decrease implementation complexity. Yan et al. reformulated the centralized coded caching scheme as designing a corresponding $F\times K$ array called placement delivery array (PDA), where $F$ is the subpacketization and $K$ is the number of users. Motivated by several constructions of PDAs, we introduce a framework for constructing PDAs, where each row is indexed by a row vector of some matrix called row index matrix and each column's index is labelled by an element of a direct product set. Using this framework, a new scheme is obtained, which can be regarded as a generalization of some previously known schemes. When $K$ is equal to ${m\choose t}q^t$ for positive integers $m$, $t$ with $t<m$ and $q\geq 2$, we show that the row index matrix must be an orthogonal array if all the users have the same memory size. Furthermore, the row index matrix must be a covering array if the coded gain is ${m\choose t}$, which is the maximal coded gain under our framework. Consequently the lower bounds on the transmission load and subpacketization of the schemes are derived under our framework. Finally, using orthogonal arrays as the row index matrix, we obtain two more explicit classes of schemes which have significantly advantages on the subpacketization while the transmission load is equal or close to that of the schemes constructed by Shangguan et al. (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory, 64, 5755-5766, 2018) for the same number of users and memory size.

Freshness-Optimal Caching for Information Updating Systems with Limited Cache Storage Capacity

In this paper, we investigate a cache updating system with a server containing $N$ files, $K$ relays and $M$ users. The server keeps the freshest versions of the files which are updated with fixed rates. Each relay can download the fresh files from the server in a certain period of time. Each user can get the fresh files from any relay as long as the relay has stored the fresh versions of the requested files. Due to the limited storage capacity and updating capacity of each relay, different cache designs will lead to different average freshness of all updating files at users. In order to keep the average freshness as large as possible in the cache updating system, we formulate an average freshness-optimal cache updating problem (AFOCUP) to obtain an optimal cache scheme. However, because of the nonlinearity of the AFOCUP, it is difficult to seek out the optimal cache scheme. As a result, an linear approximate model is suggested by distributing the total update rates completely in accordance with the number of files in the relay in advance. Then we utilize the greedy algorithm to search the optimal cache scheme that is satisfied with the limited storage capacity of each relay. Finally, some numerical examples are provided to illustrate the performance of the approximate solution.

Coded Caching Schemes with Linear Subpacketizations

In coded caching system we prefer to design a coded caching scheme with low subpacketization and small transmission rate (i.e., the low implementation complexity and the efficient transmission during the peak traffic times). Placement delivery arrays (PDA) can be used to design code caching schemes. In this paper we propose a framework of constructing PDAs via Hamming distance. As an application, two classes of coded caching schemes with linear subpacketizations and small transmission rates are obtained.

New coded caching schemes from placement delivery arrays

Coded caching schemes with low subpacketization and small transmission rate are desirable in practice due to the requirement of low implementation complexity and efficiency of the transmission. Placement delivery arrays (PDA in short) can be used to generate coded caching schemes. However, many known coded caching schemes have large memory ratios. In this paper, we realize that some schemes with low subpacketization generated by PDAs do not fully use the users' caching content to create multicasting opportunities and thus propose to overcome this drawback. As an application, we obtain two new schemes with low subpacketizations, which have significantly advantages on the memory ratio and transmission rate compared with the original scheme.

On Secure Coded Caching via Combinatorial Method

Coded caching is an efficient way to reduce network traffic congestion during peak hours by storing some content at the user's local cache memory without knowledge of later demands. The goal of coded caching design is to minimize the transmission rate and the subpacketization. In practice the demand for each user is sensitive since one can get the other users' preferences when it gets the other users' demands. The first coded caching scheme with private demands was proposed by Wan et al. However the transmission rate and the subpacketization of their scheme increase with the file number stored in the library. In this paper we consider the following secure coded caching: prevent the wiretappers from obtaining any information about the files in the server and protect the demands from all the users in the delivery phase. We firstly introduce a combinatorial structure called secure placement delivery array (SPDA in short) to realize a coded caching scheme for our security setting. Then we obtain three classes of secure schemes by constructing SPDAs, where one of them is optimal. It is worth noting that the transmission rates and the subpacketizations of our schemes are independent to the file number. Furthermore, comparing with the previously known schemes with the same security setting, our schemes have significantly advantages on the subpacketizations and for some parameters have the advantage on the transmission rates.

Improved Constructions of Coded Caching Schemes for Combination Networks

In an $(H,r)$ combination network, a single content library is delivered to ${H\choose r}$ users through deployed $H$ relays without cache memories, such that each user with local cache memories is simultaneously served by a different subset of $r$ relays on orthogonal non-interfering and error-free channels. The combinatorial placement delivery array (CPDA in short) can be used to realize a coded caching scheme for combination networks. In this paper, a new algorithm realizing a coded caching scheme for combination network based on a CPDA is proposed such that the schemes obtained have smaller subpacketization levels or are implemented more flexible than the previously known schemes. Then we focus on directly constructing CPDAs for any positive integers $H$ and $r$ with $r<H$. This is different from the grouping method in reference (IEEE ISIT, 17-22, 2018) under the constraint that $r$ divides $H$. Consequently two classes of CPDAs are obtained. Finally comparing to the schemes and the method proposed by Yan et al., (IEEE ISIT, 17-22, 2018) the schemes realized by our CPDAs have significantly advantages on the subpacketization levels and the transmission rates.

On the Dynamic Centralized Coded Caching Design

Coded caching scheme provides us an effective framework to realize additional coded multicasting gain by exploiting coding into multiple transmitted signals. The goal of coded caching design is to jointly optimize the placement and delivery scheme so as to minimize the amount of transmitted coded signals. However, few research efforts consider multiple-round coded caching design problem, in which fixed and mobile users may coexist in one network different number of active users present in successive rounds. Obviously, such dynamic network configurations may lead to undesired frequent placement caching content updating at user sides, if we assume coded caching scheme for each round separately. Thus how to tailor the coded caching design, such that the frequent caching content updating in the placement phase can be avoided, and simultaneously retaining full caching gain in delivery phase in multiple rounds will become highly desirable. In this paper, by carefully examining the bipartite graph representation of the coded caching scheme, a dynamic centralized coded caching design is proposed on the basis of the concatenating-based placement and the saturating matching based delivery scheme. Our analysis unveils that, the proposed dynamic coded caching scheme can realize the flexible coded multicast, and is order optimal.

Probabilistic Existence Results for Parent-Identifying Schemes

Parent-identifying schemes provide a way to identify causes from effects for some information systems such as digital fingerprinting and group testing. In this paper, we consider combinatorial structures for parent-identifying schemes. First, we establish an equivalent relationship between parent-identifying schemes and forbidden configurations. Based on this relationship, we derive probabilistic existence lower bounds for two related combinatorial structures, that is, $t$-parent-identifying set systems ($t$-IPPS) and $t$-multimedia parent-identifying codes ($t$-MIPPC), which are used in broadcast encryption and multimedia fingerprinting respectively. The probabilistic lower bound for the maximum size of a $t$-IPPS has the asymptotically optimal order of magnitude in many cases, and that for $t$-MIPPC provides the asymptotically optimal code rate when $t=2$ and the best known asymptotic code rate when $t\geq 3$. Furthermore, we analyze the structure of $2$-IPPS and prove some bounds for certain cases.

Linear Coded Caching Scheme for Centralized Networks

Coded caching systems have been widely studied to reduce the data transmission during the peak traffic time. In practice, two important parameters of a coded caching system should be considered, i.e., the rate which is the maximum amount of the data transmission during the peak traffic time, and the subpacketization level, the number of divided packets of each file when we implement a coded caching scheme. We prefer to design a scheme with rate and packet number as small as possible since they reflect the transmission efficiency and complexity of the caching scheme, respectively. In this paper, we first characterize a coded caching scheme from the viewpoint of linear algebra and show that designing a linear coded caching scheme is equivalent to constructing three classes of matrices satisfying some rank conditions. Then based on the invariant linear subspaces and combinatorial design theory, several classes of new coded caching schemes over $\mathbb{F}_2$ are obtained by constructing these three classes of matrices. It turns out that the rate of our new rate is the same as the scheme construct by Yan et al. (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 63, 5821-5833, 2017), but the packet number is significantly reduced. A concatenating construction then is used for flexible number of users. Finally by means of these matrices, we show that the minimum storage regenerating codes can also be used to construct coded caching schemes.

Reduced Transmission in Multi-Server Coded Caching

Coded caching has been widely used in the wireless network for shifting the some transmissions during the peak traffic times to the off-peak traffic times. Multi-server coded caching, which can share responsibility for the total amount of transmission in the wireless network during the peak traffic times by means of the collaboration among these servers, can be seen everywhere in our life. The three servers setting (two data servers and one parity check server) is used in practice, e.g. redundant array of independent disks-4. In this scenario, there are total $N$ files which are equally stored in two data servers respectively and $K$ users each of which has the memory size of $M$ files. Each server connects to users by an independently channel. During the off-peak traffic times, two data servers place some parts of each files in each user's cache. In that time, servers do not know users' requests in future. During the peak traffic times each user just requests one file from $N$ files. Luo et al. in 2016 proposed the first coded caching scheme for this setting. In this paper, we proposed some method that further reduces the amount of transmission in each channel when $\frac{KM}{N}$ is odd. This method also improves the transmission rate for systems with general multiply servers.

Constructions of Coded Caching Schemes with Flexible Memory Size

Coded caching scheme recently has become quite popular in the wireless network due to its effectively reducing the transmission amount (denote such an amount by $R$) during peak traffic times. However to realize a coded caching scheme, each file must be divided into $F$ packets which usually increases the computation complexity of a coded caching scheme. So we prefer to construct a caching scheme that decreases the order of $F$ for practical implementations. In this paper, we construct four classes of new schemes where two classes can significantly reduce the value of $F$ by increasing a little $R$ comparing with the well known scheme proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen, and $F$ in the other two classes grows sub-exponentially with $K$ by sacrificing more $R$. It is worth noting that a tradeoff between $R$ and $F$, which is a hot topic in the field of caching scheme, is proposed by our constructions. In addition, our constructions include all the results constructed by Yan et al., (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 63, 5821-5833, 2017) and some main results obtained by Shangguan et al., (arXiv preprint arXiv:1608.03989v1) as the special cases.

A Novel Recursive Construction for Coded Caching Schemes

As a strategy to further reduce the transmission pressure during the peak traffic times in wireless network, coded caching has been widely studied recently. And several coded caching schemes are constructed focusing on the two core problems in practice, i.e., the rate transmitted during the peak traffic times and the packet number of each file divided during the off peak traffic times. It is well known that there exits a tradeoff between the rate and the packet number. In this paper, a novel recursive construction is proposed. As an application, several new schemes are obtained. Comparing with previously known schemes, new schemes could further reduce packet number by increasing little rate. And for some parameters in coded caching systems, the packet number of our new schemes are smaller than that of schemes generated by memory sharing method which is widely used in the field of caching. By the way our new schemes include all the results constructed by Tang et al., (IEEE ISIT, 2790-2794, 2017) as special cases.

On the Placement Delivery Array Design for Coded Caching Scheme in D2D Networks

The coded caching scheme is an efficient technique as a solution to reduce the wireless network burden during the peak times in a Device-to-Device (D2D in short) communications. In a coded caching scheme, each file block should be divided into $F$ packets. It is meaningful to design a coded caching scheme with the rate and $F$ as small as possible, especially in the practice for D2D network. In this paper we first characterize coded caching scheme for D2D network by a simple array called D2D placement delivery array (DPDA in shot). Consequently some coded caching scheme for D2D network can be discussed by means of an appropriate DPDA. Secondly we derive the lower bounds on the rate and $F$ of a DPDA. According these two lower bounds, we show that the previously known determined scheme proposed by Ji et al., (IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 62(2): 849-869,2016) reaches our lower bound on the rate, but does not meet the lower bound on $F$ for some parameters. Finally for these parameters, we construct three classes of DPDAs which meet our two lower bounds. Based on these DPDAs, three classes of coded caching scheme with low rate and lower $F$ are obtained for D2D network.
