Coded Caching Schemes with Low Rate and Subpacketizations

Coded caching scheme, which is an effective technique to increase the transmission efficiency during peak traffic times, has recently become quite popular among the coding community. Generally rate can be measured to the transmission in the peak traffic times, i.e., this efficiency increases with the decreasing of rate. In order to implement a coded caching scheme, each file in the library must be split in a certain number of packets. And this number directly reflects the complexity of a coded caching scheme, i.e., the complexity increases with the increasing of the packet number. However there exists a tradeoff between the rate and packet number. So it is meaningful to characterize this tradeoff and design the related Pareto-optimal coded caching schemes with respect to both parameters. Recently, a new concept called placement delivery array (PDA) was proposed to characterize the coded caching scheme. However as far as we know no one has yet proved that one of the previously known PDAs is Pareto-optimal. In this paper, we first derive two lower bounds on the rate under the framework of PDA. Consequently, the PDA proposed by Maddah-Ali and Niesen is Pareto-optimal, and a tradeoff between rate and packet number is obtained for some parameters. Then, from the above observations and the view point of combinatorial design, two new classes of Pareto-optimal PDAs are obtained. Based on these PDAs, the schemes with low rate and packet number are obtained. Finally the performance of some previously known PDAs are estimated by comparing with these two classes of schemes.

Bounds and Constructions for $\overline{3}$-Strongly Separable Codes with Length $3$

As separable code (SC, IEEE Trans Inf Theory 57:4843-4851, 2011) and frameproof code (FPC, IEEE Trans Inf Theory 44:1897-1905, 1998) do in multimedia fingerprinting, strongly separable code (SSC, Des. Codes and Cryptogr.79:303-318, 2016) can be also used to construct anti-collusion codes. Furthermore, SSC is better than FPC and SC in the applications for multimedia fingerprinting since SSC has lower tracing complexity than that of SC (the same complexity as FPC) and weaker structure than that of FPC. In this paper, we first derive several upper bounds on the number of codewords of $\overline{t}$-SSC. Then we focus on $\overline{3}$-SSC with codeword length $3$, and obtain the following two main results: (1) An equivalence between an SSC and an SC. %Consequently a more tighter upper bound $(3q^2/4)$ and lower bound $(q^{3/2})$ on the number of codewords are obtained; (2) An improved lower bound $Ω(q^{5/3}+q^{4/3}-q)$ on the size of a $q$-ary SSC when $q=q_1^6$ for any prime power $q_1\equiv\ 1 \pmod 6$, better than the before known bound $\lfloor\sqrt{q}\rfloor^{3}$, which is obtained by means of difference matrix and the known result on the subset of $\mathbb{F}^{n}_q$ containing no three points on a line.

The Optimal Placement Delivery Arrays

In wireless networks, coded caching is an effective technique to reduce network congestion during peak traffic times. Recently, a new concept called placement delivery array (PDA) was proposed to characterize the coded caching scheme. So far, only one class of PDAs by Maddah-Ali and Niesen is known to be optimal. In this paper, we mainly focus on constructing optimal PDAs. Firstly, we derive some lower bounds. Next, we present several infinite classes of PDAs, which are shown to be optimal with respect to the new bounds.

On the Placement Delivery Array Design in Centralized Coded Caching Scheme

Caching is a promising solution to satisfy the ever increasing demands for the multi-media traffics. In caching networks, coded caching is a recently proposed technique that achieves significant performance gains over the uncoded caching schemes. However, to implement the coded caching schemes, each file has to be split into $F$ packets, which usually increases exponentially with the number of users $K$. Thus, designing caching schemes that decrease the order of $F$ is meaningful for practical implementations. In this paper, by reviewing the Ali-Niesen caching scheme, the placement delivery array (PDA) design problem is firstly formulated to characterize the placement issue and the delivery issue with a single array. Moreover, we show that, through designing appropriate PDA, new centralized coded caching schemes can be discovered. Secondly, it is shown that the Ali-Niesen scheme corresponds to a special class of PDA, which realizes the best coding gain with the least $F$. Thirdly, we present a new construction of PDA for the centralized caching system, wherein the cache size of each user $M$ (identical cache size is assumed at all users) and the number of files $N$ satisfies $M/N=1/q$ or ${(q-1)}/{q}$ ($q$ is an integer such that $q\geq 2$). The new construction can decrease the required $F$ from the order $O\left(e^{K\cdot\left(\frac{M}{N}\ln \frac{N}{M} +(1-\frac{M}{N})\ln \frac{N}{N-M}\right)}\right)$ of Ali-Niesen scheme to $O\left(e^{K\cdot\frac{M}{N}\ln \frac{N}{M}}\right)$ or $O\left(e^{K\cdot(1-\frac{M}{N})\ln\frac{N}{N-M}}\right)$ respectively, while the coding gain loss is only $1$.

Placement Delivery Array Design through Strong Edge Coloring of Bipartite Graphs

The technique of coded caching proposed by Madddah-Ali and Niesen is a promising approach to alleviate the load of networks during busy times. Recently, placement delivery array (PDA) was presented to characterize both the placement and delivery phase in a single array for the centralized coded caching algorithm. In this paper, we interpret PDA from a new perspective, i.e., the strong edge coloring of bipartite graph. We prove that, a PDA is equivalent to a strong edge colored bipartite graph. Thus, we can construct a class of PDAs from existing structures in bipartite graphs. The class includes the scheme proposed by Maddah-Ali \textit{et al.} and a more general class of PDAs proposed by Shangguan \textit{et al.} as special cases. Moreover, it is capable of generating a lot of PDAs with flexible tradeoff between the sub-packet level and load.

Optimal Locally Repairable Systematic Codes Based on Packings

Locally repairable codes are desirable for distributed storage systems to improve the repair efficiency. In this paper, we first build a bridge between locally repairable code and packing. As an application of this bridge, some optimal locally repairable codes can be obtained by packings, which gives optimal locally repairable codes with flexible parameters.

Bounds and Constructions for $\overline{3}$-Separable Codes with Length $3$

Separable codes were introduced to provide protection against illegal redistribution of copyrighted multimedia material. Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a code of length $n$ over an alphabet of $q$ letters. The descendant code ${\sf desc}(\mathcal{C}_0)$ of $\mathcal{C}_0 = \{{\bf c}_1, {\bf c}_2, \ldots, {\bf c}_t\} \subseteq {\mathcal{C}}$ is defined to be the set of words ${\bf x} = (x_1, x_2, \ldots,x_n)^T$ such that $x_i \in \{c_{1,i}, c_{2,i}, \ldots, c_{t,i}\}$ for all $i=1, \ldots, n$, where ${\bf c}_j=(c_{j,1},c_{j,2},\ldots,c_{j,n})^T$. $\mathcal{C}$ is a $\overline{t}$-separable code if for any two distinct $\mathcal{C}_1, \mathcal{C}_2 \subseteq \mathcal{C}$ with $|\mathcal{C}_1| \le t$, $|\mathcal{C}_2| \le t$, we always have ${\sf desc}(\mathcal{C}_1) \neq {\sf desc}(\mathcal{C}_2)$. Let $M(\overline{t},n,q)$ denote the maximal possible size of such a separable code. In this paper, an upper bound on $M(\overline{3},3,q)$ is derived by considering an optimization problem related to a partial Latin square, and then two constructions for $\overline{3}$-SC$(3,M,q)$s are provided by means of perfect hash families and Steiner triple systems.

Multimedia IPP Codes with Efficient Tracing

Binary multimedia identifiable parent property codes (binary $t$-MIPPCs) are used in multimedia fingerprinting schemes where the identification of users taking part in the averaging collusion attack to illegally redistribute content is required. In this paper, we first introduce a binary strong multimedia identifiable parent property code (binary $t$-SMIPPC) whose tracing algorithm is more efficient than that of a binary $t$-MIPPC. Then a composition construction for binary $t$-SMIPPCs from $q$-ary $t$-SMIPPCs is provided. Several infinite series of optimal $q$-ary $t$-SMIPPCs of length $2$ with $t = 2, 3$ are derived from the relationships among $t$-SMIPPCs and other fingerprinting codes, such as $\overline{t}$-separable codes and $t$-MIPPCs. Finally, combinatorial properties of $q$-ary $2$-SMIPPCs of length $3$ are investigated, and optimal $q$-ary $2$-SMIPPCs of length $3$ with $q \equiv 0, 1, 2, 5 \pmod 6$ are constructed.

Strongly Separable Codes

Binary $t$-frameproof codes ($t$-FPCs) are used in multimedia fingerprinting schemes where the identification of authorized users taking part in the averaging collusion attack is required. In this paper, a binary strongly $\bar{t}$-separable code ($\bar{t}$-SSC) is introduced to improve such a scheme based on a binary $t$-FPC. A binary $\bar{t}$-SSC has the same traceability as a binary $t$-FPC but has more codewords than a binary $t$-FPC. A composition construction for binary $\bar{t}$-SSCs from $q$-ary $\bar{t}$-SSCs is described, which stimulates the research on $q$-ary $\bar{t}$-SSCs with short length. Several infinite series of optimal $q$-ary $\bar{2}$-SSCs of length $2$ are derived from the fact that a $q$-ary $\bar{2}$-SSC of length $2$ is equivalent to a $q$-ary $\bar{2}$-separable code of length $2$. Combinatorial properties of $q$-ary $\bar{2}$-SSCs of length $3$ are investigated, and a construction for $q$-ary $\bar{2}$-SSCs of length $3$ is provided. These $\bar{2}$-SSCs of length $3$ have more than $12.5\%$ codewords than $2$-FPCs of length $3$ could have.

Codes with the Identifiable Parent Property for Multimedia Fingerprinting

Let ${\cal C}$ be a $q$-ary code of length $n$ and size $M$, and ${\cal C}(i) = \{{\bf c}(i) \ | \ {\bf c}=({\bf c}(1), {\bf c}(2), \ldots, {\bf c}(n))^{T} \in {\cal C}\}$ be the set of $i$th coordinates of ${\cal C}$. The descendant code of a sub-code ${\cal C}^{'} \subseteq {\cal C}$ is defined to be ${\cal C}^{'}(1) \times {\cal C}^{'}(2) \times \cdots \times {\cal C}^{'}(n)$. In this paper, we introduce a multimedia analogue of codes with the identifiable parent property (IPP), called multimedia IPP codes or $t$-MIPPC$(n, M, q)$, so that given the descendant code of any sub-code ${\cal C}^{'}$ of a multimedia $t$-IPP code ${\cal C}$, one can always identify, as IPP codes do in the generic digital scenario, at least one codeword in ${\cal C}^{'}$. We first derive a general upper bound on the size $M$ of a multimedia $t$-IPP code, and then investigate multimedia $3$-IPP codes in more detail. We characterize a multimedia $3$-IPP code of length $2$ in terms of a bipartite graph and a generalized packing, respectively. By means of these combinatorial characterizations, we further derive a tight upper bound on the size of a multimedia $3$-IPP code of length $2$, and construct several infinite families of (asymptotically) optimal multimedia $3$-IPP codes of length $2$.
