Image of Kerr-Melvin black hole with thin accretion disk

In this present work, we study the observational appearance of Kerr-Melvin black hole (KMBH) illuminated by an accretion disk. The accretion disk is assumed to be located on the equatorial plane and be thin both geometrically and optically. Considering the fact that outside the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) the accretion flow moves in prograde or retrograde circular orbit and falls towards the horizon along plunging orbit inside the ISCO, we develop the numerical backward ray-tracing method and obtain the images of KMBH accompanying with the accretion disk for various black hole spins, strengths of magnetic fields and inclination angles of observers. We present the intensity distribution horizontally and longitudinally and show the profiles of the red-shift for the direct and lensed images. Our study suggests that the inner shadow and critical curves can be used to estimate the magnetic field around a black hole without degeneration.

Multi-level images around Kerr-Newman black holes

We study the lensing effects of Kerr-Newman (KN) black holes and the multi-level images of luminous sources around the black holes. We obtain the analytic forms of the lens equations in KN spacetime and derive approximately their limiting forms for photon emissions near the bounded photon orbits. After deriving the expressions of three key parameters $γ$, $δ$ and $τ$, we investigate the primary, the secondary and the higher-order images of spherical sources and equatorial disk-like sources. In particular, we find that the charge of KN black hole has a significant effect on the higher-order images.

Polarized image of synchrotron radiations of hotspots in Schwarzschilld-Melvin black hole spacetime

We revisit the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCOs) of charged particles and study the polarized images of synchrotron radiations emitted from such orbiting hotspots on the equatorial plane in Schwarzchild-Melvin black hole spacetime. We obtain a constraint on the magnetic field to retain ISCOs for charged particles. In particular, we identify a critical value for the strength of the magnetic field $B_c$ that the circular orbits can have positive and negative angular momentums above $B_c$ while only one branch survive below $B_c$. Furthermore, we investigate and discuss the primary and secondary images of circularly orbiting charged hotspots carrying the information of polarization directions observed by distant observers.

Light rings and long-lived modes in quasi-black hole spacetimes

It has been argued that ultracompact objects, which possess light rings but no horizons, may be unstable against gravitational perturbations. To test this conjecture, we revisit the quasi-black hole solutions, a family of horizonless spacetimes whose limit is the extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole. We find a critical parameter at which the light rings just appear. We then calculate the quasinormal modes of the quasi-black holes. Both the WKB result and the numerical result show that long-live modes survive for the range where light rings exist, indicating that horizonless spacetimes with light rings are unstable. Our work provides a strong and explicit example that light rings could be direct observational evidence for black holes.

Photon emissions from near-horizon extremal and near-extremal Kerr equatorial emitters

We consider isotropic and monochromatic photon emissions from equatorial emitters moving along future-directed timelike geodesics in the near-horizon extremal Kerr (NHEK) and near-horizon near-extremal Kerr (near-NHEK) regions, to asymptotic infinity. We obtain numerical results for the photon escaping probability (PEP) and derive analytical expressions for the maximum observable blueshift (MOB) of the escaping photons, both depending on the emission radius and the emitter's proper motion. In particular, we find that for all anti-plunging or deflecting emitters that can eventually reach to asymptotic infinity, the PEP is greater than $50\%$ while for all plunging emitters the PEP is less than $55\%$, and for the bounded emitters in the (near-)NHEK region, the PEP is always less than $59\%$. In addition, for the emitters on unstable circular orbits in the near-NHEK region, the PEP decreases from $55\%$ to $50\%$ as the orbital radius decreases from the one of the innermost stable circular orbit to the one of the horizon. Furthermore, we show how the orientation of the emitter's motion along the radial or azimuthal direction affects the PEP and the MOB of the emitted photons.

Observability of Zero-angular-momentum Sources Near Kerr Black Holes

We revisit monochromatic and isotropic photon emissions from the zero-angular\linebreak-momentum sources (ZAMSs) near a Kerr black hole. We investigate the escape probability of the photons that can reach to infinity and study the energy shifts of these escaping photons, which could be expressed as the functions of the source radius and the black hole spin. We study the cases for generic source radius and black hole spin, but we pay special attention to the near-horizon (near-)extremal Kerr ((near-)NHEK) cases. We reproduce the relevant numerical results using a more efficient method and get new analytical results for (near-)extremal cases. The main non-trivial results are: in the NHEK region of a (near-)extremal Kerr black hole, the escape probability for a ZAMS tends to $\frac{7}{24}\approx 29.17\%$, independent of the NHEK radius; at the innermost of the photon shell (IPS) in the near-NHEK region, the escape probability for a ZAMS tends to \begin{equation} \frac{5}{12} -\frac{1}{\sqrt{7}} + \frac{2}{\sqrt{7}π}\arctan\frac{1}{\sqrt{7}}\approx12.57\% . \nonumber \end{equation} The results show that the photon escape probability remains a relatively large nonzero value even though the ZAMS is in the deepest region of a near-horizon throat of a high spin Kerr black hole, as long as the ZAMS is outside the IPS. The energies of the escaping photons at infinity, however, are all redshifted but still visible in principle.

QED Effects on Kerr Black Hole Shadows immersed in uniform magnetic fields

In this work, taking the QED effect into account, we investigate the shadows of the Kerr black holes immersed in uniform magnetic fields through the numerical backward ray-tracing method. We introduce a dimensionless parameter $Λ$ to characterize the strength of magnetic fields and studied the influence of magnetic fields on the Kerr black hole shadows for various spins of the black holes and inclination angles of the observers. In particular, we find that the photon "hairs" appear near the left edge of the shadow in the presence of magnetic fields. The photon hairs may be served as a signature of the magnetic fields. We notice that the photon hairs become more evident when the strength of magnetic fields or the spin of the black hole becomes larger. In addition, we study the deformation of the shadows by bringing in quantitative parameters that can describe the position and shape of the shadow edge.

Correspondence of eikonal quasinormal modes and unstable fundamental photon orbits for Kerr-Newman black hole

In this work, we study the relation of the eikonal quasinormal modes (EQNMs) and the unstable fundamental photon orbits (UFPOs) in the Kerr-Newman spacetime. We find that in the eikonal limit the gravitational and electromagnetic perturbations of the Kerr-Newman black hole are naturally decoupled, and a single one-dimensional Schrödinger-like equation encoding the QNM spectrum can be derived. We then show that the decoupled Teukolsky master equation and the Klein-Gordon equation for the massless scalar field in the Kerr-Newman spacetime are of the same form in the eikonal limit. As a direct consequence, taking into account of the boundary conditions for EQNMs we show an exact correspondence between EQNMs and UFPOs, that is, EQNM/UFPO correspondence. More precisely, similar to the Kerr case, the real part of EQNM's frequency is a linear combination of the precessional and (polar) orbital frequencies, while the imaginary part of the frequency is proportional to the Lyapunov exponent of the UFPO.

Universal Properties of Light Rings for Stationary Axisymmetric Spacetimes

Light rings (LRs) play an important role in gravitational wave observations and black hole photographs. In this paper, we investigate general features of LRs in stationary, axisymmetric, asymptotically flat spacetimes with or without horizons. For a nonextremal black hole, we show explicitly that there always exist at least two LRs propagating in opposite directions, where the outermost one is radially unstable. For an extremal black hole, we show that there exists at least one retrograde LR. We find that there is at least one LR which is angularly stable. The stability analysis does not involve any energy condition. Our method also applies to horizonless spacetimes and we prove that LRs always appear in pairs. Only some natural and generic assumptions are used in our proof. The results are applicable to general relativity as well as most modified theories of gravity. In contrast to previous works on this issue, we obtain much stronger results with a much more straightforward approach.

Revisiting the shadow of braneworld black holes

We revisit the shadows of rotating braneworld black holes in the Randall-Sundrum type II model, by considering not only the metric in the near region of the black hole but also the linearized metric in the far region where the observer stays. Our study is significantly different from previous studies, which relies only on the metric in the near region. From the study, we identify a critical angle $θ_c$ which decides the shadow curve is open or closed: the shadow curve would be open if the observational angle $θ_c<θ_o\leπ/2$, and the curve becomes closed when $0<θ_o\leθ_c$. We study how various parameters affect the shape of the shadow curve. We furthermore apply our analysis to the data of M87* from the Event Horizon Telescope and obtain a new constraint on the parameters of the braneworld black holes.

Observational Signature and Additional Photon Rings of Asymmetric Thin-shell Wormhole

Recently, a distinct shadow mechanism was proposed by Wang et al. from the asymmetric thin-shell wormhole (ATW) in [Phys. Lett. B 811 (2020) 135930]. On the other hand, Gralla et al's work [Phys. Rev. D 100 (2019) 2, 024018] represented a nice description of photon rings in the presence of an accretion disk around a black hole. In this paper, we are inspired to thoroughly investigate the observational appearance of an accretion disk around the ATW. Although the spacetime outside an ATW with a throat could be identical to that containing a black hole with its event horizon, we show evident additional photon rings from the ATW spacetime. Moreover, a potential lensing band between two highly demagnified photon rings is found. Our analysis provides an optically observational signature to distinguish ATWs from black holes.

High spin expansion for null geodesics

We consider the high spin expansion for the null geodesics in the Kerr spacetime. We expand the null geodesic equation successively to higher orders in deviation from extremity. Via the method of matched asymptotic expansion, the radial integrals are obtained analytically. It turns out that the analytic expressions are very sensitive to the value of the shifted Carter constant $q$. We show that for a large $q$, the analytic expressions can be used to study observational electromagnetic signatures for astrophysical black holes like M87*. However, for a small $q$, the high spin expansion method can only be applied to (near-) extreme black holes.

QED Effect on Black Hole Shadow

In this work, taking the QED effect into account, we investigate the shadows of the static black hole with magnetic monopoles and neutral black holes in magnetic fields through the numerical backward ray-tracing method. For a static black holes with magnetic monopole, we obtain the relation between the shadow radius and the coupling constant. For neutral black holes in the uniform magnetic fields, we find that the shadow curves deviate very small from the ellipses for equatorial observer, and we read the linear relation between the eccentricity and the coupling constant. For $θ_o\neqπ/2$, we find that the shadow curves can be well approximated by ellipses in most cases, except the case that the magnetic field is very strong and the observer sits around the angle $θ_o=π/4$ or $3π/4$. Moreover we extend our investigation to a neutral static black hole surrounded with a current loop.

Novel shadows from the asymmetric thin-shell wormhole

For dark compact objects such as black holes or wormholes, the shadow size has long been thought to be determined by the unstable photon sphere (region). However, by considering the asymmetric thin-shell wormhole (ATSW) model, we find that the impact parameter of the null geodesics is discontinuous through the wormhole in general and hence we identify novel shadows whose sizes are dependent of the photon sphere in the other side of the spacetime. The novel shadows appear in three cases: (A2) The observer's spacetime contains a photon sphere and the mass parameter is smaller than that of the opposite side; (B1, B2) there' s no photon sphere no matter which mass parameter is bigger. In particular, comparing with the black hole, the wormhole shadow size is always smaller and their difference is significant in most cases, which provides a potential way to observe wormholes directly through Event Horizon Telescope with better detection capability in the future.

Can shadows reflect phase structures of black holes?

The relation between the black hole shadow and the black hole thermodynamics is investigated. We find that the phase structure can be reflected by the shadow radius for the spherically symmetric black hole. We also find that the shadow size gives correct information but the distortion of the shadow gives wrong information of the phase structure for the axially symmetric black hole.

Influence of Quantum Correction on the Black Hole Shadows, Photon Rings and Lensing Rings

We calculate the photon sphere $r_{ph}$ and critical curve $b_c$ for the quantum corrected Schwarzschild black hole, finding that they violate an universal inequalities proved for asymptotically flat black holes which satisfy null energy condition in the framework of Einstein gravity. This violation seem to be a common phenomenon when considering quantum modification of Einstein gravity. Furthermore, we study the shadows, lensing rings and photon rings in the quantum corrected Schwarzschild black hole. The violation leads to a larger bright lensing ring in the observational appearance of thin disk emission near the black hole compared with the classical Schwarzschild black hole. Our analysis may provide a observational evidence for quantum effect of general relativity.

The innermost stable circular orbit and shadow in the novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Recently, a novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity was formulated and a spherically symmetric black hole solution in this theory was derived by D. Glavan and C. Lin \cite{Glavan:2019inb}. In this paper, we study the geodesic motions in the background of the spherically symmetric black hole, by focusing on the innermost stable circular orbits (ISCO) for massive particle and photon sphere and shadow. Also, we find that a negative GB coupling constant is allowable in this theory, as in which case the singular behavior of the black hole can be hidden inside the event horizon. Moreover, we find that due to this extension a recently proposed universal bound on black hole size in \cite{Lu:2019zxb} can be broken.

Superradiance and stability of the novel 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole

We investigated the superradiance and stability of the novel 4D charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole which is recently inspired by Glavan and Lin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)]. We found that the positive Gauss-Bonnet coupling consant $α$ enhances the superradiance, while the negative $α$ suppresses it. The condition for superradiant instability is proved. We also worked out the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of the charged Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet black hole and found that the real part of all the QNMs live beyond the superradiance condition and the imaginary parts are all negative. Therefore this black hole is superradiant stable. When $α$ makes the black hole extremal, there are normal modes.
