Shadow of a Spinning Black Hole in an Expanding Universe

We study the influence of the cosmic expansion on the size of the shadow of a spinning black hole observed by a comoving observer. We first consider that the expansion is driven by a cosmological constant only and build the connection between the Kerr-de Sitter metric and the FLRW metric. We clarify that the notion of a comoving observer is well defined in the spacetime of a spinning black hole only in the sense of being asymptotic. The angular size of the shadow for a comoving observer is calculated. Significantly we find that the angular size approaches a non-zero finite value for a distant comoving observer, while it vanishes for a distant static observer. Furthermore, by adopting the approximate method proposed in \cite{Bisnovatyi-Kogan:2018vxl} we extend the study to the general multi-component universe case. The results show that the difference between the horizontal and vertical angular size changes a lot, while their ratio, i.e. the oblateness, keeps unchanged when the supermassive spinning black hole is at a high redshift, due to the common amplification factor exerted by the cosmic expansion. In addition, when $a=0$, our results agree with the previous studies in \cite{Perlick:2018iye,Bisnovatyi-Kogan:2018vxl}.

Circuit complexity for generalised coherent states in thermal field dynamics

In this work, we study the circuit complexity for generalized coherent states in thermal systems by adopting the covariance matrix approach. We focus on the coherent thermal (CT) state, which is non-Gaussian and has a nonvanishing one-point function. We find that even though the CT state cannot be fully determined by the symmetric two-point function, the circuit complexity can still be computed in the framework of the covariance matrix formalism by properly enlarging the covariance matrix. Now the group generated by the unitary is the semiproduct of translation and the symplectic group. If the reference state is Gaussian, the optimal geodesic is still be generated by a horizontal generator such that the circuit complexity can be read from the generalized covariance matrix associated to the target state by taking the cost function to be $F_2$. For a single harmonic oscillator, we discuss carefully the complexity and its formation in the cases that the reference states are Gaussian and the target space is excited by a single mode or double modes. We show that the study can be extended to the free scalar field theory.

Greybody factor and power spectra of the Hawking radiation in the novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet de-Sitter gravity

We investigate Hawking radiation in the novel $4D$ Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity which is recently formulated by Glavan and Lin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)]. We first find the constraints on $α$ and $Λ$ to retain a dS black hole in the spacetime. Both the greybody factor and the power spectra of the Hawking radiation of the massless scalar are studied for the full range of various parameters including the GB coupling constant $α$, the cosmological constant $Λ$ and the constant related to the scalar $ξ$ numerically. In particular, we find the greybody factor is larger for a negative $α$ than the case for $α\ge0$. While, the power spectra of the Hawking radiation is higher for a allowed negative $α$ than others with non-negative $α$. The reason is that the temperature of the black hole would be very high when $α<0$, even when $α$ approaches the lower bound, the temperature would be arbitrary high.

Observational signature of a near-extremal Kerr-Sen black hole in the heterotic string theory

We analytically study the optical appearance of an isotropically emitter orbiting near the horizon of a near-extremely rotating Kerr-Sen (KS) black hole which is an electrically charged black hole arising in heterotic string theory. We study the influence of the Sen charge on the observational quantities, including the image position, flux and redshift factor. Moreover, we compare the results with those for a near-extremal Kerr-Newman (KN) black hole, which is the charged rotating black hole in general relativity. We find quantitative corrections of the signatures of these charged black holes (both KS and KN) compare to that of a neutral Kerr black hole. This may serve as distinctive features of different black holes for future tests by the Event Horizon Telescope.

Dynamical Phase Transition from Nonequilibrium Dynamics of Dark Solitons

By holographic duality, we identify a novel dynamical phase transition which results from the temperature dependence of non-equilibrium dynamics of dark solitons in a superfluid. For a non-equilibrium superfluid system with an initial density of dark solitons, there exists a critical temperature $T_d$,above which the system relaxes to equilibrium by producing sound waves, while below which it goes through an intermediate phase with a finite density of vortex-antivortex pairs. In particular, as $T_d$ is approached from below, the density of vortex pairs scales as $(T_d - T)^γ$ with the critical exponent $γ= 1/2$.

Photon Emission Near Myers-Perry Black Holes in the Large Dimension Limit

We study the null geodesics extending from the near-horizon region out to the far region in the background of the Schwarzschild and the singly-spinning Myers-Perry black holes in the large dimension limit. We find that in this limit the radial integrals of these geodesics can be obtained by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. If the motion of the photon is confined to the equator plane, then all geodesic equations are solvable analytically. The study in this paper may provide a toy model to analyze the observables relevant to the electromagnetic phenomena occurring near the black holes.

Holographic complexity under a global quantum quench

There are several different proposals, relating holographic complexity to the gravitational objects defined on the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. In this paper, we investigate the evolution of complexity following a global quantum quench for these proposals. We find that surprisingly they all reproduce known properties of complexity, such as the switchback effect. However, each of these proposals also has its own characteristic features during the dynamical evolution, which may serve as a powerful tool to distinguish the various holographic duals of complexity.

Holographic complexity and thermodynamics of AdS black holes

In this paper, we relate the complexity for a holographic state to a simple gravitational object of which the growth rate at late times is equal to temperature times black hole entropy. We show that if this is correct, the thermodynamics of AdS black holes implies that for generic holographic states dual to static AdS black holes, the complexity growth rate at late times will saturate the Lloyd bound at high temperature limit. In particular, for AdS planar black holes, the result holds at lower temperatures as well. We conjecture that the complexity growth is bounded above as $d\mathcal{C}/dt\leq αT S/π\hbar$ or $d\mathcal{C}/dt\leq α\big(T_+ S_+-T_-S_-\big)/π\hbar$ for black holes with inner horizons, where $α$ is an overall coefficient for our new proposal. The conjecture passes a number of nontrivial tests for black holes in Einstein's gravity. However, we also find that the bound may be violated in the presence of stringy corrections.

Observational signature of near-extremal Kerr-like black holes in a modified gravity theory at the Event Horizon Telescope

We study the shadows cast by near-extremal Kerr-MOG black holes for different values of the parameter in modified gravity (MOG). In particular, we consider an isotropic emitter orbiting near such black holes and analytically compute the positions, fluxes and redshift factors of their images. The size of the shadow decreases when the modified parameter is increased. For each shadow, the images of the emitter appear on a special part of the shadow which has a rich structure. The primary image and secondary images are similar to those produced for the near-extremal (high spin) Kerr black hole, but the near-extremal Kerr-MOG black hole can have a spin ($\hat{J}/M^2_α$) which is finitely lower than 1. When the modified parameter is varied, the typical positions of the corresponding images do not change, nor does the typical redshift factor associated with the primary image. However, another typical redshift factor associated with the secondary image increases when the modified parameter is increased. We also find that the fluxes increase in that case. These images appear periodically with period greater than that of Kerr. This provides an alternative signature away from the Kerr case which may be tested by the Event Horizon Telescope.

Circuit Complexity for Coherent States

We examine the circuit complexity of coherent states in a free scalar field theory, applying Nielsen's geometric approach as in [1]. The complexity of the coherent states have the same UV divergences as the vacuum state complexity and so we consider the finite increase of the complexity of these states over the vacuum state. One observation is that generally, the optimal circuits introduce entanglement between the normal modes at intermediate stages even though our reference state and target states are not entangled in this basis. We also compare our results from Nielsen's approach with those found using the Fubini-Study method of [2]. For general coherent states, we find that the complexities, as well as the optimal circuits, derived from these two approaches, are different.

Probing trihedral corner entanglement for Dirac fermions

We investigate the universal information contained in the Renyi entanglement entropies for a free massless Dirac fermion in three spatial dimensions. Using numerical calculations on the lattice, we examine the case where the entangling boundary contains trihedral corners. The entropy contribution arising from these corners grows logarithmically in the entangled subsystem's size with a universal coefficient. Our numerical results provide evidence that this logarithmic coefficient has a simple structure determined by two universal functions characterizing the underlying critical theory and the geometry of the corner. This form is similar to that of the analogous coefficient appearing for smooth entangling surfaces. Furthermore, our results support the idea that one of the geometric factors in the corner coefficient is topological in nature and related to the Euler characteristic of the boundary, in direct analogy to the case of the smooth surface. We discuss implications, including the possibility that one can use trihedral corner contributions to the Renyi entropy to determine both of the universal central charges of the underlying critical theory.

On the Noether charge and the gravity duals of quantum complexity

The physical relevance of the thermodynamic volumes of AdS black holes to the gravity duals of quantum complexity was recently argued by Couch et al. In this paper, by generalizing the Wald-Iyer formalism, we derive a geometric expression for the thermodynamic volume and relate its product with the thermodynamic pressure to the non-derivative part of the gravitational action evaluated on the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. We propose that this action provides an alternative gravity dual of the quantum complexity of the boundary theory. We refer this to "complexity=action 2.0" (CA-2) duality. It is significantly different from the original "complexity=action" (CA) duality as well as the "complexity=volume 2.0" (CV-2) duality proposed by Couch et al. The latter postulates that the complexity is dual to the spacetime volume of the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. To distinguish our new conjecture from the various dualities in literature, we study a number of black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-Dilation theories. We find that for all these black holes, the CA duality generally does not respect the Lloyd bound whereas the CV-2 duality always does. For the CA-2 duality, although in many cases it is consistent with the Lloyd bound, we also find a counter example for which it violates the bound as well.

From Prigogine to Raychaudhuri

It is highlighted by Prigogine that there are two additional universal behaviors associated with the entropy production rate besides the four laws of thermodynamics. One is that the entropy production rate decreases when the system approaches the steady state, and the other is that the entropy production rate reaches its minimal value at the steady state. Motivated by the black hole thermodynamics and AdS/CFT correspondence, we resort to Raychaudhuri equation to prove that these two universal behaviors are also obeyed by the black hole entropy. In particular, our result together with the four laws of black hole thermodynamics further indicates that the holographic gravity should be universal, not restricted only within the context of AdS/CFT correspondence.

General proof of the entropy principle for self-gravitating fluid in f(R) Gravity

The discussions on the connection between gravity and thermodynamics attract much attention recently. We consider a static self-gravitating perfect fluid system in $f(R)$ gravity, which is an important theory could explain the accelerated expansion of the universe. We first show that the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation of $f(R)$ theories can be obtained by thermodynamical method in spherical symmetric spacetime. Then we prove that the maximum entropy principle is also valid for $f(R)$ gravity in general static spacetimes beyond spherical symmetry. The result shows that if the constraint equation is satisfied and the temperature of fluid obeys Tolmans law, the extrema of total entropy implies other components of gravitational equations. Conversely, if $f(R)$ gravitational equation hold, the total entropy of the fluid should be extremum. Our work suggests a general and solid connection between $f(R)$ gravity and thermodynamics.

Kerr black holes as accelerators of spinning test particles

It has been shown that ultraenergetic collisions can occur near the horizon of an extremal Kerr black hole. Previous studies mainly focused on geodesic motions of particles. In this paper, we consider spinning test particles whose orbits are non-geodesic. By employing the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equation, we find the critical angular momentum satisfies $J=2E$ for extremal Kerr black holes. Although the conserved angular momentum $J$ and energy $E$ have been redefined in the presence of spin, the critical condition remains the same form. If a particle with this angular momentum collides with another particle arbitrarily close to the horizon of the black hole, the center-of-mass energy can be arbitrarily high. We also prove that arbitrarily high energies cannot be obtained for spinning particles near the horizons of non-extremal Kerr black holes.

Note on Zero Temperature Holographic Superfluids

In this note, we have addressed various issues on zero temperature holographic superfluids. First, inspired by our numerical evidence for the equality between the superfluid density and particle density, we provide an elegant analytic proof for this equality by a boost trick. Second, using not only the frequency domain analysis but also the time domain analysis from numerical relativity, we identify the hydrodynamic normal modes and calculate out the sound speed, which is shown to increase with the chemical potential and saturate to the value predicted by the conformal field theory in the large chemical potential limit. Third, the generic non-thermalization is demonstrated by the fully non-linear time evolution from a non-equilibrium state for our zero temperature holographic superfluid. Furthermore, a conserved Noether charge is proposed in support of this behavior.

Modave Lectures on Applied AdS/CFT with Numerics

These lecture notes are intended to serve as an introduction to applied AdS/CFT with numerics for an audience of graduate students and others with little background in the subject. The presentation begins with a poor man's review of current status of quantum gravity, where AdS/CFT correspondence is believed to be the well formulated quantum gravity in the anti-de Sitter space. Then we present the basic ingredients in applied AdS/CFT and introduce the relevant numerics for solving differential equations into which the bulk dynamics collapses. To demonstrate how to apply AdS/CFT with numerics, we take the zero temperature holographic superfluid as a concrete example for case study. In passing, we also present some new results, which include the numerical evidence as well as an elegant analytic proof for the equality between the superfluid density and particle density, namely $ρ_s=ρ$, and the saturation to the predicted value $\frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}$ by conformal field theory for the sound speed in the large chemical potential limit.
