Truncated theta series and partitions into distinct parts

Linear inequalities involving Euler's partition function $p(n)$ have been the subject of recent studies. In this article, we consider the partition function $Q(n)$ counting the partitions of $n$ into distinct parts. Using truncated theta series, we provide four infinite families of linear inequalities for $Q(n)$ and partition theoretic interpretations for these results.

Rank partition functions and truncated theta identities

In $1944$, Freeman Dyson defined the concept of rank of an integer partition and introduced without definition the term of crank of an integer partition. A definition for the crank satisfying the properties hypothesized for it by Dyson was discovered in 1988 by G. E. Andrews and F. G. Garvan. In this paper, we introduce truncated forms for two theta identities involving the generating functions for partitions with non-negative rank and non-negative crank. As corollaries we derive new infinite families of linear inequalities for the partition function $p(n)$. The number of Garden of Eden partitions are also considered in this context in order to provide other infinite families of linear inequalities for $p(n)$.

Combinatorial Proof of the Minimal Excludant Theorem

The minimal excludant of a partition $λ$, $\rm{mex}(λ)$, is the smallest positive integer that is not a part of $λ$. For a positive integer $n$, $ σ\, \rm{mex}(n)$ denotes the sum of the minimal excludants of all partitions of $n$. Recently, Andrews and Newman obtained a new combinatorial interpretations for $σ\, \rm{mex}(n)$. They showed, using generating functions, that $σ\, \rm{mex}(n)$ equals the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct parts using two colors. In this paper, we provide a purely combinatorial proof of this result and new properties of the function $σ\, \rm{mex}(n)$. We generalize this combinatorial interpretation to $σ_r\, \rm{mex}(n)$, the sum of least $r$-gaps in all partitions of $n$. The least $r$-gap of a partition $λ$ is the smallest positive integer that does not appear at least $r$ times as a part of $λ$.

$q$-Series congruences involving statistical mechanics partition functions in regime III and IV of Baxter's solution of the hard-hexagon model

For each $s\in\{2,4\}$, the generating function of $R_s(n)$, the number of partitions of $n$ into odd parts or congruent to $0$, $\pm s\pmod {10}$, arises naturally in regime III of Rodney Baxter's solution of the hard-hexagon model of statistical mechanics. For each $s\in\{1,3\}$, the generating function of $R^*_s(n)$, the number of partitions of $n$ into parts not congruent to $0$, $\pm s\pmod {10}$ and $10-2s \pmod {20}$, arises naturally in regime IV of Rodney Baxter's solution of the hard-hexagon model of statistical mechanics. In this paper, we investigate the parity of $R_s(n)$ and $R^*_s(n)$, providing new parity results involving sums of partition numbers $p(n)$ and squares in arithmetic progressions.

Combinatorial interpretations of two identities of Guo and Yang

The restricted partitions in which the largest part is less than or equal to $N$ and the number of parts is less than or equal to $k$ were investigated by Andrews in \cite{Andrews76}. These partitions were extended recently by the author to the partitions into parts of two kinds. In this paper, we use a new class of restricted partitions into parts of two kinds to provide new combinatorial interpretations for two identities of Guo and Yang.

On the partitions into distinct parts and odd parts

In this paper, we show that the difference between the number of parts in the odd partitions of $n$ and the number of parts in the distinct partitions of $n$ satisfies Euler's recurrence relation for the partition function $p(n)$ when $n$ is odd. A decomposition of this difference in terms of the total number of parts in all the partitions of $n$ is also derived. In this context, we conjecture that for $k>0$, the series $$ (q^2;q^2)_\infty \sum_{n=k}^\infty \frac{q^{{k\choose 2}+(k+1)n}}{(q;q)_n} \begin{bmatrix} n-1\\k-1 \end{bmatrix} $$ has non-negative coefficients.

A generalization of complete and elementary symmetric functions

In this paper, we consider the generating functions of the complete and elementary symmetric functions and provide a new generalization of these classical symmetric functions. Some classical relationships involving the complete and elementary symmetric functions are reformulated in a more general context. Combinatorial interpretations of these generalized symmetric functions are also introduced.

Fast algorithm for generating ascending compositions

In this paper we give a fast algorithm to generate all partitions of a positive integer $n$. Integer partitions may be encoded as either ascending or descending compositions for the purposes of systematic generation. It is known that the ascending composition generation algorithm is substantially more efficient than its descending composition counterpart. Using tree structures for storing the partitions of integers, we develop a new ascending composition generation algorithm which is substantially more efficient than the algorithms from the literature.

A convolution for the complete and elementary symmetric functions

In this paper we give a convolution identity for the complete and elementary symmetric functions. This result can be used to proving and discovering some combinatorial identities involving $r$-Stirling numbers, $r$-Whitney numbers and $q$-binomial coefficients. As a corollary we derive a generalization of the quantum Vandermonde's convolution identity.

Factorization Theorems for Generalized Lambert Series and Applications

We prove new variants of the Lambert series factorization theorems studied by Merca and Schmidt (2017) which correspond to a more general class of Lambert series expansions of the form $L_a(α, β, q) := \sum_{n \geq 1} a_n q^{αn-β} / (1-q^{αn-β})$ for integers $α, β$ defined such that $α\geq 1$ and $0 \leq β< α$. Applications of the new results in the article are given to restricted divisor sums over several classical special arithmetic functions which define the cases of well-known, so-termed "ordinary" Lambert series expansions cited in the introduction. We prove several new forms of factorization theorems for Lambert series over a convolution of two arithmetic functions which similarly lead to new applications relating convolutions of special multiplicative functions to partition functions and $n$-fold convolutions of one of the special functions.

Bisected theta series, least $r$-gaps in partitions, and polygonal numbers

The least $r$-gap, $g_r(λ)$, of a partition $λ$ is the smallest part of $λ$ appearing less than $r$ times. In this article we introduce two new partition functions involving least $r$-gaps. We consider a bisection of a classical theta identity and prove new identities relating Euler's partition function $p(n)$, polygonal numbers, and the new partition functions. To prove the results we use an interplay of combinatorial and $q$-series methods. We also give a combinatorial interpretation for $$\sum_{n=0}^\infty (\pm 1)^{k(k+1)/2} p(n-r\cdot k(k+1)/2).$$

Generating Special Arithmetic Functions by Lambert Series Factorizations

We summarize the known useful and interesting results and formulas we have discovered so far in this collaborative article summarizing results from two related articles by Merca and Schmidt arriving at related so-termed Lambert series factorization theorems. We unify the matrix representations that underlie two of our separate papers, and which commonly arise in identities involving partition functions and other functions generated by Lambert series. We provide a number of properties and conjectures related to the inverse matrix entries defined in Schmidt's article and the Euler partition function $p(n)$ which we prove through our new results unifying the expansions of the Lambert series factorization theorems within this article.

New Factor Pairs for Factorizations of Lambert Series Generating Functions

We prove several new variants of the Lambert series factorization theorem established in the first article "Generating special arithmetic functions by Lambert series factorizations" by Merca and Schmidt (2017). Several characteristic examples of our new results are presented in the article to motivate the formulations of the generalized factorization theorems. Applications of these new factorization results include new identities involving the Euler partition function and the generalized sum-of-divisors functions, the Möbius function, Euler's totient function, the Liouville lambda function, von Mangoldt's lambda function, and the Jordan totient function.
