A boundedness conjecture for minimal log discrepancies on a fixed germ

We consider the following conjecture: on a klt germ (X,x), for every finite set I there is a positive integer N with the property that for every R-ideal J on X with exponents in I, there is a divisor E over X that computes the minimal log discrepancy of (X,J) at x and such that its discrepancy k_E is bounded above by N. We show that this implies Shokurov's ACC conjecture for minimal log discrepancies on a fixed klt germ and give some partial results towards the conjecture.

The volume of a set of arcs on a variety

In this paper, we give a definition of volume for subsets in the space of arcs of an algebraic variety, and study its properties. Our main result relates the volume of a set of arcs on a Cohen-Macaulay variety to its jet-codimension, a notion which generalizes the codimension of a cylinder in the arc space of a smooth variety.

The dimension of jet schemes of singular varieties

Given a scheme X over a field k, a generalized jet scheme parametrizes maps from Spec(A) to X, where A is a finite-dimensional, local algebra over k. We give an overview of known results concerning the dimensions of these schemes when A has embedding dimension one, when they are related to invariants of singularities in birational geometry. We end with a discussion of more general jet schemes.

Weight functions on non-archimedean analytic spaces and the Kontsevich-Soibelman skeleton

We associate a weight function to pairs consisting of a smooth and proper variety X over a complete discretely valued field and a differential form on X of maximal degree. This weight function is a real-valued function on the non-archimedean analytification of X. It is piecewise affine on the skeleton of any regular model with strict normal crossings of X, and strictly ascending as one moves away from the skeleton. We apply these properties to the study of the Kontsevich-Soibelman skeleton of such a pair, and we prove that this skeleton is connected when X has geometric genus one. This result can be viewed as an analog of the Shokurov-Kollar connectedness theorem in birational geometry.

On the numerical dimension of pseudo-effective divisors in positive characteristic

Let X be a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. We prove that if D is a pseudo-effective R-divisor on X which is not numerically equivalent to the negative part in its divisorial Zariski decomposition, then the numerical dimension of D is positive. In characteristic zero, this was proved by Nakayama using vanishing theorems.

Estimates for F-jumping numbers and bounds for Hartshorne-Speiser-Lyubeznik numbers

Given an ideal J on a smooth variety in characteristic zero, we estimate the F-jumping numbers of the reductions of J to positive characteristic in terms of the jumping numbers of J and the characteristic. We apply one of our estimates to bound the Hartshorne-Speiser-Lyubeznik invariant for the reduction to positive characteristic of a hypersurface singularity.

The non-nef locus in positive characteristic

We give an analogue in positive characteristic of the description of the non-nef locus from \cite{ELMNP}. In this case, the role of the asymptotic multiplier ideals is played by the asymptotic test ideals. The key ingredient is provided by a uniform global generation statement involving twists by such ideals.

A Frobenius variant of Seshadri constants

We define and study a version of Seshadri constant for ample line bundles in positive characteristic. We prove that lower bounds for this constant imply the global generation or very ampleness of the corresponding adjoint line bundle. As a consequence, we deduce that the criterion for global generation and very ampleness of adjoint line bundles in terms of usual Seshadri constants holds also in positive characteristic.

The augmented base locus in positive characteristic

Let L be a nef line bundle on a projective scheme X in positive characteristic. We prove that the augmented base locus of L is equal to the union of the irreducible closed subsets V of X such that the restriction of L to V is not big. For a smooth variety in characteristic zero, this was proved by Nakamaye using vanishing theorems.

Valuations and asymptotic invariants for sequences of ideals

We study asymptotic jumping numbers for graded sequences of ideals, and show that every such invariant is computed by a suitable real valuation of the function field. We conjecture that every valuation that computes an asymptotic jumping number is necessarily quasi-monomial. This conjecture holds in dimension two. In general, we reduce it to the case of affine space and to graded sequences of valuation ideals. Along the way, we study the structure of a suitable valuation space.

Multiplier ideals via Mather discrepancy

We define a version of multiplier ideals, the Mather multiplier ideals, on a variety with arbitrary singularities, using the Mather discrepancy and the Jacobian ideal. In this context we prove a relative vanishing theorem, thus obtaining restriction theorems and a subadditivity and summation theorems. The Mather multiplier ideals also satisfy a Skoda type result. As an application, we obtain a Briancon-Skoda type formula for the integral closures of ideals on a variety with arbitrary singularities.

A finiteness property of graded sequences of ideals

Given a graded sequence of ideals (a_m) on a smooth variety $X$ having finite log canonical threshold, suppose that for every m we have a divisor E_m over X that computes the log canonical threshold of a_m, and such that the log discrepancies of the divisors E_m are bounded. We show that in this case the set of divisors E_m is finite.

Ordinary varieties and the comparison between multiplier ideals and test ideals

We consider the following conjecture: if X is a smooth projective variety over a field of characteristic zero, then there is a dense set of reductions X_s of X to positive characteristic such that the action of the Frobenius morphism on the top Zariski cohomology of the structure sheaf of X_s is bijective. We also consider a conjecture relating certain invariants of singularities in characteristic zero (the multiplier ideals) with invariants in positive characteristic (the test ideals). We prove that the former conjecture implies the latter one in the case of ambient nonsingular varieties.

Ordinary varieties and the comparison between multiplier ideals and test ideals II

We consider the following conjecture: if X is a smooth projective variety over a field of characteristic zero, then there is a dense set of reductions X_s to positive characteristic such that the action of the Frobenius morphism on the top Zariski cohomology of the structure sheaf on X_s is bijective. We also consider the conjecture relating the multiplier ideals of an ideal J on a nonsingular variety in characteristic zero, and the test ideals of the reductions of J to positive characteristic. We prove that the latter conjecture implies the former one. The converse was proved in a joint paper of the author with V. Srinivas.

Log canonical thresholds, F-pure thresholds, and non-standard extensions

We present a new relation between an invariant of singularities in characteristic zero (the log canonical threshold) and an invariant of singularities defined via the Frobenius morphism in positive characteristic (the F-pure threshold). We show that the set of limit points of sequences of the form (c_p), where c_p is the F-pure threshold of an ideal on an n-dimensional smooth variety in characteristic p, coincides with the set of log canonical thresholds of ideals on n-dimensional smooth varieties in characteristic zero. We prove this by combining results of Hara and Yoshida with non-standard constructions.
