Sequences of LCT-polytopes

To r ideals on a germ of smooth variety X one attaches a rational polytope in the r-dimensional Euclidean space (the LCT-polytope) that generalizes the notion of log canonical threshold in the case of one ideal. We study these polytopes, and prove a strong form of the Ascending Chain Condition in this setting: we show that if a sequence P_m of such LCT-polytopes converges to a compact subset Q in the Hausdorff metric, then Q is equal to the intersection of all but finitely many of the P_m. Furthermore, Q is an LCT-polytope.

Log canonical thresholds on varieties with bounded singularities

We consider pairs (X,A), where X is a variety with klt singularities and A is a formal product of ideals on X with exponents in a fixed set that satisfies the Descending Chain Condition. We also assume that X has (formally) bounded singularities, in the sense that it is, formally locally, a subvariety in a fixed affine space defined by equations of bounded degree. We prove in this context a conjecture of Shokurov, predicting that the set of log canonical thresholds for such pairs satisfies the Ascending Chain Condition.

Toward an inductive description of singularities of pairs

Motivated by Shokurov's ACC Conjecture for log canonical thresholds, we propose an inductive point of view on singularities of pairs, in the case when the ambient variety is smooth. Our main result characterizes the log canonicity of a pair in dimension N+1 by the log canonicity of another pair (not effective, in general) in dimension N.

The Monodromy Conjecture for hyperplane arrangements

The Monodromy Conjecture asserts that if c is a pole of the local topological zeta function of a hypersurface, then exp(2πi c) is an eigenvalue of the monodromy on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber. A stronger version of the conjecture asserts that every pole is a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of the hypersurface. In this note we prove the weak version of the conjecture for hyperplane arrangements. Furthermore, we reduce the strong version to the following conjecture: -n/d is always a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of an indecomposable essential central hyperplane arrangement of d hyperplanes in the affine n-space.

Shokurov's ACC Conjecture for log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties

Shokurov conjectured that the set of all log canonical thresholds on varieties of bounded dimension satisfies the ascending chain condition. In this paper we prove that the conjecture holds for log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties and, more generally, on locally complete intersection varieties and on varieties with quotient singularities.

Limits of log canonical thresholds

Let T_n denote the set of log canonical thresholds of pairs (X,Y), with X a nonsingular variety of dimension n, and Y a nonempty closed subscheme of X. Using non-standard methods, we show that every limit of a decreasing sequence in T_n lies in T_{n-1}, proving in this setting a conjecture of Kollár. We also show that T_n is a closed subset in the set of real numbers; in particular, every limit of log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties of fixed dimension is a rational number. As a consequence of this property, we see that in order to check Shokurov's ACC Conjecture for all T_n, it is enough to show that 1 is not a point of accumulation from below of any T_n. In a different direction, we interpret the ACC Conjecture as a semi-continuity property for log canonical thresholds of formal power series.

The Ascending Chain Condition for log canonical thresholds on l.c.i. varieties

Shokurov's ACC Conjecture says that the set of all log canonical thresholds on varieties of bounded dimension satisfies the Ascending Chain Condition. This conjecture was proved for log canonical thresholds on smooth varieties in [EM1]. Here we use this result and inversion of adjunction to establish the conjecture for locally complete intersection varieties.

Positivity for toric vector bundles

We show that an equivariant vector bundle on a complete toric variety is nef or ample if and only if its restriction to every invariant curve is nef or ample, respectively. Furthermore, we show that nef toric vector bundles have a nonvanishing global section at every point, and deduce that the underlying vector bundle is trivial if and only if its restriction to every invariant curve is trivial. We apply our methods and results to study, in particular, the vector bundles M_L that arise as the kernel of the evaluation map on sections of L, when L is an ample line bundle. We give examples of twists of such bundles that are ample but not globally generated.

Generically finite morphisms and formal neighborhoods of arcs

We show that given a dominant morphism between two smooth varieties of the same dimension, the induced morphism between the formal neighborhoods of two arcs on these varieties is a closed embedding, of codimension given by the order of vanishing along the ramification subscheme.

Bernstein-Sato polynomials in positive characteristic

In characteristic zero, the Bernstein-Sato polynomial of a hypersurface can be described as the minimal polynomial of the action of an Euler operator on a suitable D-module. We consider the analogous D-module in positive characteristic, and use it to define a sequence of Bernstein-Sato polynomials (corresponding to the fact that we need to consider also divided powers Euler operators). We show that the information contained in these polynomials is equivalent to that given by the F-jumping exponents of the hypersurface, in the sense of Hara and Yoshida.

Test ideals vs. multiplier ideals

The generalized test ideals introduced in [HY] are related to multiplier ideals via reduction to characteristic p. In addition, they satisfy many of the subtle properties of the multiplier ideals, which in characteristic zero follow via vanishing theorems. In this note we give several examples to emphasize the different behavior of test ideals and multiplier ideals. Our main result is that every ideal in an F-finite regular local ring can be written as a generalized test ideal. We also prove the semicontinuity of $F$-pure thresholds (though the analogue of the Generic Restriction Theorem for multiplier ideals does not hold).

Convex Bodies Associated to Linear Series

In his work on log-concavity of multiplicities, Okounkov showed in passing that one could associate a convex body to a linear series on a projective variety, and then use convex geometry to study such linear systems. Although Okounkov was essentially working in the classical setting of ample line bundles, it turns out that the construction goes through for an arbitrary big divisor. Moreover, this viewpoint renders transparent many basic facts about asymptotic invariants of linear series, and opens the door to a number of extensions. The purpose of this paper is to initiate a systematic development of the theory, and to give a number of applications and examples.

Jet schemes and singularities

We give a self-contained presentation of the basic results on jet schemes of singular varieties. Applications are given to invariants of singularities, such as minimal log discrepancies. We simplify our older approach to Inversion of adjunction for locally complete intersection varieties, and we prove a more general result for arbitrary Q-Gorenstein varieties embeded in nonsingular varieties (this statement has been proved independently also by Kawakita) .

Restricted volumes and base loci of linear series

We introduce and study the restricted volume of a divisor along a subvariety. Our main result is a description of the irreducible components of the augmented base locus by the vanishing of the restricted volume.

F-thresholds, tight closure, integral closure, and multiplicity bounds

The F-threshold $c^J(\a)$ of an ideal $\a$ with respect to the ideal $J$ is a positive characteristic invariant obtained by comparing the powers of $\a$ with the Frobenius powers of $J$. We show that under mild assumptions, we can detect the containment in the integral closure or the tight closure of a parameter ideal using F-thresholds. We formulate a conjecture bounding $c^J(\a)$ in terms of the multiplicities $e(\a)$ and $e(J)$, when $\a$ and $J$ are zero-dimensional ideals, and $J$ is generated by a system of parameters. We prove the conjecture when $J$ is a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring, and also when $\a$ and $J$ are generated by homogeneous systems of parameters in a Cohen-Macaulay graded $k$-algebra.

On Igusa zeta functions of monomial ideals

We show that the real parts of the poles of the Igusa zeta function of a monomial ideal can be computed from the torus-invariant divisors on the normalized blowing-up along the ideal. Moreover, we show that every such number is a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial associated to the monomial ideal.

Invariants of singularities of pairs

Let X be a smooth complex variety and Y be a closed subvariety of X, or more generally, a closed subscheme of X. We are interested in invariants attached to the singularities of the pair (X, Y). We discuss various methods to construct such invariants, coming from the theory of multiplier ideals, D-modules, the geometry of the space of arcs and characteristic p techniques. We present several applications of these invariants to algebra, higher dimensional birational geometry and to singularities.
