A note on the convergence of the eigenvalues in a subdomain to the continuous spectrum

The SIGEST paper Nielsen and Strakoš (2024) characterized the spectrum of the preconditioned operator $Δ^{-1}[\nabla \cdot (K\nabla u)]$ in a bounded open two-dimensional domain $Ω$, where $Δ$ denotes the Laplacian and $K(x,y)$ is a continuous symmetric matrix-valued function. An important part of the analysis states that for a diagonal tensor $K$ constant in an open subdomain $S \subset Ω$, the closed interval defined by its diagonal elements belongs to the spectrum of the preconditioned operator. This result is correct, but the proof in Nielsen and Strakoš (2024) must be refined. This paper presents a refined proof and extends the previous work. As shown in the cited papers, for any point $λ$ in the open interval defined by the elements of the diagonal tensor constant in $S$ and any point $(x_0,y_0)\in S$, a rectangular subdomain $Σ_l\subset S$ can be constructed such that the generalized eigenvalue problem associated with the preconditioned operator restricted to $Σ_l$, of arbitrarily small size, has the eigenvalue $λ$ and infinitely many eigenfunctions. These are given by solutions of a locally defined wave equation. However, such solutions of the locally restricted generalized eigenvalue problem cannot be extended to the whole domain $Ω$. Using instead rectangular subdomains whose size shrinks to zero, the present paper constructs a Weyl singular sequence of \emph{approximate} eigenfunctions associated with $λ$, proving that $λ$ belongs to the spectrum of the preconditioned operator. Since self-adjoint operators in a separable Hilbert space can have at most a countable set of eigenvalues, this shows that the eigenvalues of the locally defined operator converge to points of the continuous spectrum of the preconditioned operator on the entire domain.

On three-dimensional flows of thermo-viscoelastic fluids of Giesekus type

Viscoelastic rate-type fluid models constitute a fundamental framework for the mathematical description of complex materials exhibiting coupled elastic and viscous effects, with a wide range of applications in engineering, biomaterials, and medicine. In realistic regimes, thermal effects are essential and lead to strongly coupled systems in which heat conduction and temperature-dependent constitutive laws play a decisive role. In this paper, we develop a thermodynamically consistent model for heat-conducting viscoelastic rate-type fluids. We establish the existence of a global weak solution in the full three-dimensional setting. In contrast to the existing literature, no smallness, regularity, or structural restrictions on the initial data are imposed beyond natural energy and entropy bounds, and no additional regularising mechanisms such as artificial stress diffusion are required. The analysis is based on a weak-strong framework combining energy and entropy balances with compactness tools, allowing us to treat the full nonlinear coupling between the fluid velocity, the temperature, and the elastic stress.

On the continuity in time of solutions to a generalized Navier--Stokes--Fourier system

We consider the flow of a generalized non-Newtonian incompressible heat-conducting fluid in a~bounded two-dimensional domain, subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions for velocity and temperature. The fluid obeys a power-law constitutive relation for the Cauchy stress with exponent~$p$. For $p\geq 2$ and finite-energy initial data, we establish the existence of a global-in-time weak solution that satisfies the entropy equality. The novelty of this work is the rigorous proof of time continuity of the temperature in $L^1(Ω)$, a property not previously established in this setting. Furthermore, we prove regularity and time continuity for a weak solution of the entropy equation with a convective term and an $L^1$ right-hand side under minimal assumptions on the velocity regularity, in arbitrary spatial dimensions. We show that this continuity is equivalently described by vanishing dissipation on high level sets, a truncated variational inequality for admissible test functions, or the associated equality. This reveals the connection between energy dissipation, weak stability, and temporal regularity.

A new representation formula for the logarithmic corotational derivative -- a case study in application of commutator based functional calculus

The logarithmic corotational derivative is a key concept in rate-type constitutive relations in continuum mechanics. The derivative is defined in terms of the logarithmic spin tensor, which is a skew-symmetric tensor/matrix given by a relatively complex formula. Using a newly developed commutator based functional calculus, we derive a new representation formula for the logarithmic spin tensor. In addition to the result on the logarithmic corotational derivative we also use the newly developed functional calculus to answer some problems regarding the matrix logarithm and the monotonicity of stress-strain relations. These results document that the commutator based functional calculus is of general use in tensor/matrix analysis, and that the calculus allows one to seamlessly work with tensor/matrix valued functions and their derivatives.

On the stability of solutions to non-Newtonian Navier--Stokes--Fourier-like systems in the supercritical case

We consider a three-dimensional domain occupied by a homogeneous, incompressible, non-Newtonian, heat-conducting fluid with prescribed nonuniform temperature on the boundary and no-slip boundary conditions for the velocity. No external body forces are assumed. The constitutive relation for the Cauchy stress tensor is assumed in a general form that includes, in particular, the power-law and Ladyzhenskaya models with the power-law exponent in the range where neither regularity, uniqueness, nor the validity of the energy equality is known to hold. Nevertheless, we introduce a novel concept of solution suitable for this setting, which enables us to establish the existence of global-in-time solutions for arbitrary physically relevant initial data. A remarkable feature of this formulation is that the steady-state solution is nonlinearly stable: every such solution converges, in a suitable sense, to the steady state as time tends to infinity. This provides the first result that combines existence with long-time stability in this physically relevant yet mathematically challenging regime.

$\mathcal{C}^α$-regularity for nonlinear non-diagonal parabolic systems

In the elliptic theory for $p$-Laplacian-like problems, the Hölder continuity of solutions has been proven for problems arising as Euler--Lagrange equations of a convex potential with $p$-growth that additionally satisfies the splitting condition. In this article, we extend these results to the parabolic setting. We investigate nonlinear parabolic systems whose structure parallels the elliptic case but incorporates time dependence. Assuming suitable space-time regularity of $F$ and natural structural conditions analogous to the stationary theory, we establish $\mathcal{C}^α$-regularity of weak solutions in space and time whenever the growth parameter $p>d/2$. This extends the classical result for parabolic systems, which is valid only for $p>d-2$. This is the only regularity result for systems that are far from the radial (Uhlenbeck) structure.

Weak sequential stability of solutions to a nonisothermal kinetic model for incompressible dilute polymeric fluids

The paper is concerned with the mathematical analysis of a class of thermodynamically consistent kinetic models for nonisothermal flows of dilute polymeric fluids, based on the identification of energy storage mechanisms and entropy production mechanisms in the fluid under consideration. The model involves a system of nonlinear partial differential equations coupling the unsteady incompressible temperature-dependent Navier--Stokes equations to a temperature-dependent generalization of the classical Fokker--Planck equation and an evolution equation for the absolute temperature. Sequences of smooth solutions to the initial-boundary-value problem, satisfying the available bounds that are uniform with respect to the given data of the model, are shown to converge to a global-in-time large-data weak solution that satisfies an energy inequality, where the absolute temperature satisfies a renormalized variational inequality, implying weak sequential stability of the mathematical model.

On the well-possedness of time-dependent three-dimensional Euler fluid flows

We study the mathematical properties of time-dependent flows of incompressible fluids that respond as an Euler fluid until the modulus of the symmetric part of the velocity gradient exceeds a certain, a-priori given but arbitrarily large, critical value. Once the velocity gradient exceeds this threshold, a dissipation mechanism is activated. Assuming that the fluid, after such an activation, dissipates the energy in a specific manner, we prove that the corresponding initial-boundary-value problem is globally-in-time well-posed in the sense of Hadamard. In particular, we show that for an arbitrary, sufficiently regular, initial velocity there is a unique weak solution to the spatially periodic problem.

On three dimensional flows of viscoelastic fluids of Giesekus type

Viscoelastic rate-type fluids are popular models of choice in many applications involving flows of fluid-like materials with complex micro-structure. A well-developed mathematical theory for the most of these classical fluid models is however missing. The main purpose of this study is to provide a complete proof of long-time and large-data existence of weak solutions to unsteady internal three-dimensional flows of Giesekus fluids subject to a no-slip boundary condition. As a new auxiliary tool, we provide the identification of certain biting limits in the parabolic setting, presented here within the framework of evolutionary Stokes problems. We also generalize the long-time and large-data existence result to higher dimensions, to viscoelastic models with multiple relaxation mechanisms and to viscoelastic models with different type of dissipation.

Coupling the Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations with the Johnson-Segalman stress-diffusive viscoelastic model: Global-in-time and large-data analysis

We prove that there exists a~large-data and global-in-time weak solution to a~system of partial differential equations describing an unsteady flow of an incompressible heat-conducting rate-type viscoelastic stress-diffusive fluid filling up a~mechanically and thermally isolated container of any dimension. To overcome the~principle difficulties connected with ill-posedness of the~diffusive Oldroyd-B model in three dimensions, we assume that the~fluid admits a~strengthened dissipation mechanism, at least for excessive elastic deformations. All the~relevant material coefficients are allowed to depend continuously on the~temperature, whose evolution is captured by a~thermodynamically consistent equation. In fact, the~studied model is derived from scratch using only the~balance equations for linear momentum and energy, the~formulation of the~second law of thermodynamics and the~constitutive equation for the~internal energy. The~latter is assumed to be a~linear function of temperature, which simplifies the~model. The~concept of our weak solution incorporates both the~temperature and entropy inequalities, and also the~local balance of total energy provided that the~pressure function exists.

Parabolic equations with non-standard growth and measure or integrable data

We consider a parabolic partial differential equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions and measure or $L^1$ data. The key difficulty consists in a presence of a monotone operator~$A$ subjected to a non-standard growth condition, controlled by the exponent $p$ depending on the time and the spatial variable. We show the existence of a weak and an entropy solution to our system, as well as the uniqueness of an entropy solution, under the assumption of boundedness and log-Hölder continuity of the variable exponent~$p$ with respect to the spatial variable. On the other hand, we do not assume any smoothness of~$p$ with respect to the time variable.

On unsteady internal flows of incompressible fluids characterized by implicit constitutive equations in the bulk and on the boundary

Long-time and large-data existence of weak solutions for initial- and boundary-value problems concerning three-dimensional flows of \emph{incompressible} fluids is nowadays available not only for Navier--Stokes fluids but also for various fluid models where the relation between the Cauchy stress tensor and the symmetric part of the velocity gradient is \emph{nonlinear}. The majority of such studies however concerns models where such a dependence is \emph{explicit} (the stress is a function of the velocity gradient), which makes the class of studied models unduly restrictive. The same concerns boundary conditions, or more precisely the slipping mechanisms on the boundary, where the no-slip is still the most preferred condition considered in the literature. Our main objective is to develop a robust mathematical theory for unsteady internal flows of \emph{implicitly constituted} incompressible fluids with implicit relations between the tangential projections of the velocity and the normal traction on the boundary. The theory covers numerous rheological models used in chemistry, biorheology, polymer and food industry as well as in geomechanics. It also includes, as special cases, nonlinear slip as well as stick-slip boundary conditions. Unlike earlier studies, the conditions characterizing admissible classes of constitutive equations are expressed by means of tools of elementary calculus. In addition, a fully constructive proof (approximation scheme) is incorporated. Finally, we focus on the question of uniqueness of such weak solutions.

On the exponential decay in time of solutions to a~generalized Navier-Stokes-Fourier system

We consider a non-Newtonian incompressible heat conducting fluid with prescribed nonuniform temperature on the boundary and with the no-slip boundary conditions for the velocity. We assume no external body forces. For the power-law like models with the power law index bigger than $11/5$ in three dimensions, we identify a class of solutions fulfilling the entropy equality and converging to the equilibria exponentially in a proper metric. In fact, we show the existence of a Lyapunov functional for the problem. Consequently, the steady solution is nonlinearly stable and attracts all suitable weak solutions.

Global well-posedness for two-dimensional flows of viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion

We consider the system of partial differential equations governing two-dimensional flows of a robust class of viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion, involving a general objective derivative. The studied system generalizes the incompressible Navier--Stokes equations for the fluid velocity $v$ and pressure $p$ by the presence of an additional term in the constitutive equation for the Cauchy stress expressed in terms of a positive definite tensor $B$. The tensor $B$ evolves according to a diffusive variant of an equation that can be viewed as a combination of corresponding counterparts of Oldroyd-B and Giesekus models. Considering spatially periodic problem, we prove that for arbitrary initial data and forcing in appropriate $L^2$ spaces, there exists a unique globally defined weak solution to the equations of motion, and more regular initial data and forcing launch a more regular solution with $\bs B$ positive definite everywhere.

On solutions for a generalized Navier-Stokes-Fourier system fulfilling entropy equality

We consider a flow of non-Newtonian heat conducting incompressible fluid in a bounded domain subjected to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition for the velocity field and the spatially inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition for the temperature. The ultimate goal is to show that the fluid converges to equilibrium as time tends to infinity. However, to justify such result, one needs to deal with very special inequalities and very special test functions, which are typically not admissible on the level of weak solutions. In this paper, we show how one can overcome such difficulties. In particular, we show the existence of a solution fulfilling the entropy equality, which seems to be optimal class of solutions in which one should study the stability result.

On a range of exponents for absence of Lavrentiev phenomenon for double phase functionals

For a class of functionals having the $(p,q)$-growth, we establish an improved range of exponents $p$, $q$ for which the Lavrentiev phenomenon does not occur. The proof is based on a standard mollification argument and Young convolution inequality. Our contribution is two-fold. First, we observe that it is sufficient to regularise only bounded functions. Second, we exploit the $L^{\infty}$ bound on the function rather than the $L^p$ estimate on the gradient. Our proof does not rely on the properties of minimizers to variational problems but it is rather a consequence of the underlying Musielak-Orlicz function spaces. Moreover, our method works for unbounded boundary data, the variable exponent functionals and vectorial problems. In addition, the result seems to be optimal for $p\le d$.

On nonlinear problems of parabolic type with implicit constitutive equations involving flux

We study systems of nonlinear partial differential equations of parabolic type, in which the elliptic operator is replaced by the first order divergence operator acting on a flux function, which is related to the spatial gradient of the unknown through an additional implicit equation. This setting, broad enough in terms of applications, significantly expands the paradigm of nonlinear parabolic problems. Formulating four conditions concerning the form of the implicit equation, we first show that these conditions describe a maximal monotone $p$-coercive graph. We then establish the global-in-time and large-data existence of (weak) solution and its uniqueness. Towards this goal, we adopt and significantly generalize the Minty method of monotone mappings. A unified theory, containing several novel tools, is developed in a way to be tractable numerically.

On evolutionary problems with a-priori bounded gradients

We study a nonlinear evolutionary partial differential equation that can be viewed as a generalization of the heat equation where the temperature gradient is a~priori bounded but the heat flux provides merely \mbox{$L^1$-coercivity}. Applying higher differentiability techniques in space and time, choosing a special weighted norm (equivalent to the Euclidean norm in $\mathbb{R}^d$), incorporating finer properties of integrable functions and using the concept of renormalized solution, we prove long-time and large-data existence and uniqueness of weak solution, with an $L^1$-integrable flux, to an initial spatially-periodic problem for all values of a positive model parameter. If this parameter is smaller than $2/(d+1)$, where $d$ denotes the spatial dimension, we obtain higher integrability of the flux. As the developed approach is not restricted to a scalar equation, we also present an analogous result for nonlinear parabolic systems in which the nonlinearity, being the gradient of a strictly convex function, gives an a-priori $L^\infty$-bound on the gradient of the unknown solution.
