Parabolic equations in Musielak -- Orlicz spaces with discontinuous in time $N$-function

We consider a parabolic PDE with Dirichlet boundary condition and monotone operator $A$ with non-standard growth controlled by an $N$-function depending on time and spatial variable. We do not assume continuity in time for the $N$-function. Using an additional regularization effect coming from the equation, we establish the existence of weak solutions and in the particular case of isotropic $N$-function, we also prove their uniqueness. This general result applies to equations studied in the literature like $p(t,x)$-Laplacian and double-phase problems.

Existence and uniqueness of global weak solutions to strain-limiting viscoelasticity with Dirichlet boundary data

We consider a system of evolutionary equations that is capable of describing certain viscoelastic effects in linearized yet nonlinear models of solid mechanics. The essence of the paper is that the constitutive relation, involving the Cauchy stress, the small strain tensor and the symmetric velocity gradient, is given in an implicit form. For a large class of implicit constitutive relations we establish the existence and uniqueness of a global-in-time large-data weak solution. We then focus on the class of so-called limiting strain models, i.e., models for which the magnitude of the strain tensor is known to remain small a priori, regardless of the magnitude of the Cauchy stress tensor. For this class of models, a new technical difficulty arises, which is that the Cauchy stress is only an integrable function over its domain of definition, resulting in the underlying function spaces being nonreflexive and thus the weak compactness of bounded sequences of elements of these spaces is lost. Nevertheless, even for problems of this type we are able to provide a satisfactory existence theory, as long as the initial data have finite elastic energy and the boundary data fulfill natural compatibility conditions.

Existence of large-data global weak solutions to a model of a strain-limiting viscoelastic body

We prove the existence of a unique large-data global-in-time weak solution to a class of models of the form $\mathbf{u}_{tt} = \mathrm{div}(\mathbb{T}) + \mathbf{f}$ for viscoelastic bodies exhibiting strain-limiting behaviour, where the constitutive equation, relating the linearised strain tensor $\boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u})$ to the Cauchy stress tensor $\mathbb{T}$, is assumed to be of the form $\boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u}_t) +α\boldsymbolε(\mathbf{u})= F(\mathbb{T})$, where we define $F(\mathbb{T}) = (1 + |\mathbb{T}|^a)^{-\frac{1}{a}}\mathbb{T}$, for constant parameters $α\in (0, \infty)$ and $a\in (0, \infty)$, in any number $d$ of space dimensions, with periodic boundary conditions. The Cauchy stress $\mathbb{T}$ is show to belong to $L^1(Q)^{d\times d}$ over the space-time domain $Q$. In particular, in three space dimensions, if $a\in (0, \frac{2}{7})$, then in fact $\mathbb{T}\in L^{1+δ}(Q)^{d\times d}$ for a $δ>0$, the value of which depends only on $a$.

On the dynamic slip boundary condition for Navier--Stokes-like problems

The choice of the boundary conditions in mechanical problems has to reflect the interaction of the considered material with the surface, despite the assumption of the no-slip condition is preferred to avoid boundary terms in the analysis and slipping effects are usually overlooked. Besides the "static slip models", there are phenomena not accurately described by them, e.g. in the moment when the slip changes rapidly, the wall shear stress and the slip can exhibit a sudden overshoot and subsequent relaxation. When these effects become significant, the so-called dynamic slip phenomenon occurs. We develop a mathematical analysis of Navier-Stokes-like problems with dynamic slip boundary condition, which requires a proper generalisation of the Gelfand triplet and the corresponding function spaces setting.

Large data existence theory for three-dimensional unsteady flows of rate-type viscoelastic fluids with stress diffusion

We prove that there exists a weak solution to a system governing an unsteady flow of a viscoelastic fluid in three dimensions, for arbitrarily large time interval and data. The fluid is described by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for the velocity $v$, coupled with a diffusive variant of a combination of the Oldroyd-B and the Giesekus models for a tensor $\mathbb{B}$. By a proper choice of the constitutive relations for the Helmholtz free energy (which, however, is non-standard in the current literature, despite the fact that this choice is well motivated from the point of view of physics) and for the energy dissipation, we are able to prove that $\mathbb{B}$ enjoys the same regularity as $v$ in the classical three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. This enables us to handle any kind of objective derivative of $\mathbb{B}$, thus obtaining existence results for the class of diffusive Johnson-Segalman models as well. Moreover, using a suitable approximation scheme, we are able to show that $\mathbb{B}$ remains positive definite if the initial datum was a positive definite matrix (in a pointwise sense). We also show how the model we are considering can be derived from basic balance equations and thermodynamical principles in a natural way.

On incompressible heat-conducting viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress-diffusion and purely spherical elastic response

We prove the existence of large-data global-in-time weak solutions to an evolutionary PDE system describing flows of incompressible \emph{heat-conducting} viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress-diffusion, subject to a stick-slip boundary condition for the velocity and a homogeneous Neumann boundary condition for the extra stress tensor. In the introductory section we develop the thermodynamic foundations of the proposed model, and we document the role of thermodynamics in obtaining critical structural relations between the quantities of interest. These structural relations are then exploited in the mathematical analysis of the governing equations. In particular, the definition of weak solution is motivated by the thermodynamic basis of the model. The extra stress tensor describing the elastic response of the fluid is in our case purely spherical, which is a simplification from the physical point of view. The model nevertheless exhibits features that require novel mathematical ideas in order to deal with the technically complex structure of the associated internal energy and the more complicated forms of the corresponding entropy and energy fluxes. The paper provides the first rigorous proof of the existence of large-data global-in-time weak solutions to the governing equations for \emph{coupled thermo-mechanical processes} in viscoelastic rate-type fluids.

Regularity results for two standard models in elasto-perfect-plasticity theory with hardening

We consider two most studied standard models in the theory of elasto-plasticity with hardening in arbitrary dimension $d\ge 2$, namely, the kinematic hardening and the isotropic hardening problem. While the existence and uniqueness of the solution is very well known, the optimal regularity up to the boundary remains an open problem. Here, we show that in the interior we have Sobolev regularity for the stress and hardening while for their time derivatives we have the "half" derivative with the spatial and time variable. This was well known for the limiting problem but we show that these estimates are uniform and independent of the order of approximation. The main novelty consist of estimates near the boundary. We show that for the stress and the hardening parameter, we control tangential derivative in the Lebesgue space~$L^2$, and for time derivative of the stress and the hardening we control the "half" time derivative and also spatial tangential derivative. Last, for the normal derivative, we show that the stress and the hardening have the $3/5$ derivative with respect to the normal and for the time derivative of the stress and the hardening we show they have the $1/5$ derivative with respect to the normal direction, provided we consider the kinematic hardening or near the Dirichlet boundary. These estimates are independent of dimension. In case, we consider the isotropic hardening near the Neumann boundary we shall obtain $W^{α,2}$ regularity for the stress and the hardening with some $α>1/2$ depending on the dimension and $W^{β,2}$ with some $β> 1/6$ for the time derivative of the stress and the hardening. Finally, in case of kinematic hardening the same regularity estimate holds true also for the velocity gradient.

On unsteady flows of pore pressure-activated granular materials

We investigate mathematical properties of the system of nonlinear partial differential equations that describe, under certain simplifying assumptions, evolutionary processes in water-saturated granular materials. The unconsolidated solid matrix behaves as an ideal plastic material before the activation takes place and then it starts to flow as a Newtonian or a generalized Newtonian fluid. The plastic yield stress is non-constant and depends on the difference between the given lithostatic pressure and the pressure of the fluid in a pore space. We study unsteady three-dimensional flows in an impermeable container, subject to stick-slip boundary conditions. Under realistic assumptions on the data, we establish long-time and large-data existence theory.

Existence and qualitative theory for nonlinear elliptic systems with a nonlinear interface condition used in electrochemistry

We study a nonlinear elliptic system with prescribed inner interface conditions. These models are frequently used in physical system where the ion transfer plays the important role for example in modelling of nano-layer growth or Li-on batteries. The key difficulty of the model consists of the rapid or very slow growth of nonlinearity in the constitutive equation inside the domain or on the interface. While on the interface, one can avoid the difficulty by proving a kind of maximum principle of a solution, inside the domain such regularity for the flux is not available in principle since the constitutive law is discontinuous with respect to the spatial variable. The key result of the paper is the existence theory for these problems, where we require that the leading functional satisfies either the delta-two or the nabla-two condition. This assumption is applicable in case of fast (exponential) growth as well as in the case of very slow (logarithmically superlinear) growth.

On a Neumann problem for variational functionals of linear growth

We consider a Neumann problem for strictly convex variational functionals of linear growth. We establish the existence of minimisers among $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-functions provided that the domain under consideration is simply connected. Hence, in this situation, the relaxation of the functional to the space of functions of bounded variation, which has better compactness properties, is not necessary. Similar $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-regularity results for the corresponding Dirichlet problem are only known under rather restrictive convexity assumptions limiting its non-uniformity up to the borderline case of the minimal surface functional, whereas for the Neumann problem no such quantified version of strong convexity is required.

On a class of compressible viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress--diffusion

We develop a mathematical theory for a class of compressible viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress diffusion. Our approach is based on the concepts used in the nowadays standard theory of compressible Newtonian fluids as renormalization, effective viscous flux identity, compensated compactness. The presence of the extra stress, however, requires substantial modification of these techniques, in particular, a new version of the effective viscous flux identity is derived. With help of these tools, we show the existence of global--in--time weak solutions for any finite energy initial data.

On the existence of classical solution to the steady flows of generalized Newtonian fluid with concentration dependent power-law index

Steady flows of an incompressible homogeneous chemically reacting fluid are described by a coupled system, consisting of the generalized Navier--Stokes equations and convection - diffusion equation with diffusivity dependent on the concentration and the shear rate. Cauchy stress behaves like power-law fluid with the exponent depending on the concentration. We prove the existence of a classical solution for the two dimensional periodic case whenever the power law exponent is above one and less than infinity.

Time regularity of flows of non-Newtonian fluids with critical power-law growth

We deal with the flows of non-Newtonian fluids in three dimensional setting subjected to the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. Under the natural monotonicity, coercivity and growth condition on the Cauchy stress tensor expressed by a power index $p\ge 11/5$ we establish regularity properties of a solution with respect to time variable. Consequently, we can use this better information for showing the uniqueness of the solution provided that the initial data are good enough for all power--law indexes $p\ge 11/5$. Such a result was available for $p\ge 12/5$ and therefore the paper fills the gap and extends the uniqueness result to the whole range of $p$'s for which the energy equality holds.

A boundary regularity result for minimizers of variational integrals with nonstandard growth

We prove global Lipschitz regularity for a wide class of convex variational integrals among all functions in $W^{1,1}$ with prescribed (sufficiently regular) boundary values, which are not assumed to satisfy any geometrical constraint (as for example bounded slope condition). Furthermore, we do not assume any restrictive assumption on the geometry of the domain and the result is valid for all sufficiently smooth domains. The result is achieved with a suitable approximation of the functional together with a new construction of appropriate barrier functions.

Existence and homogenization of nonlinear elliptic systems in nonreflexive spaces

We consider a strongly nonlinear elliptic problem with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. The growth and the coercivity of the elliptic operator is assumed to be indicated by an inhomogeneous anisotropic $\mathcal{N}$-function. First, an existence result is shown under the assumption that the $\mathcal{N}$-function or its convex conjugate satisfies $Δ_2$-condition. The second result concerns the homogenization process for families of strongly nonlinear elliptic problems with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition under above stated conditions on the elliptic operator, which is additionally assumed to be periodic in the spatial variable.

Thermodynamics and stability of non-equilibrium steady states in open systems

Thermodynamical arguments are known to be useful in the construction of physically motivated Lyapunov functionals for nonlinear stability analysis of spatially homogeneous equilibrium steady states in thermodynamically isolated systems. Unfortunately, the limitation to thermodynamically isolated systems is essential, and standard arguments are not applicable even for some very simple thermodynamically open systems. On the other hand, the nonlinear stability of thermodynamically open systems is usually investigated using the so-called energy method. Unfortunately, the designation "energy method" is clearly a misnomer. The mathematical quantity that is traditionally referred to as the "energy" is by no means linked to the energy in the physical sense of the word. Consequently, it would seem that genuine thermodynamical concepts are of no use in the nonlinear stability analysis of thermodynamically open systems. We show that this is not true. In particular, we propose a construction that in the case of simple heat conduction problem leads to a physically well-motivated Lyapunov functional, which effectively replaces the artificial Lyapunov functional used in the standard energy method. The proposed construction seems to be general enough to be applied in complex thermomechanical settings.

Bellman systems with mean field dependent dynamics

We deal with nonlinear elliptic and parabolic systems that are the Bellman like systems associated to stochastic differential games with mean field dependent dynamics. The key novelty of the paper is that we allow heavily mean field dependent dynamics. This in particular leads to a system of PDE's with critical growth, for which it is rare to have an existence and/or regularity result. In the paper, we introduce a structural assumptions that cover many cases in stochastic differential games with mean filed dependent dynamics for which we are able to establish the existence of a weak solution. In addition, we present here a completely new method for obtaining the maximum/minimum principles for systems with critical growths, which is a starting point for further existence and also qualitative analysis.

PDE analysis of a class of thermodynamically compatible viscoelastic rate-type fluids with stress-diffusion

We establish the long-time existence of large-data weak solutions to a system of nonlinear partial differential equations. The system of interest governs the motion of non-Newtonian fluids described by a simplified viscoelastic rate-type model with a stress-diffusion term. The simplified model shares many qualitative features with more complex viscoelastic rate-type models that are frequently used in the modeling of fluids with complicated microstructure. As such, the simplified model provides important preliminary insight into the mathematical properties of these more complex and practically relevant models of non-Newtonian fluids. The simplified model that is analyzed from the mathematical perspective is shown to be thermodynamically consistent, and we extensively comment on the interplay between the thermodynamical background of the model and the mathematical analysis of the corresponding initial-boundary-value problem.
