Gradient $L^q$ theory for a class of non-diagonal nonlinear elliptic systems

We consider a class of nonlinear non-diagonal elliptic systems with $p$-growth and establish the $L^q$-integrability for all $q\in [p,p+2]$ of any weak solution provided the corresponding right hand side belongs to the corresponding Lebesgue space and the involved elliptic operator asymptotically satisfies the $p$-uniform ellipticity, the so-called splitting condition and it is continuous with respect to the spatial variable. For operators satisfying the uniform $p$-ellipticity condition the higher integrability is known for $q\in[p,dp/(d-2)]$ and for operators having the so-called Uhlenbeck structure, the theory is valid for all $q\in [p,\infty)$. The key novelty of the paper is twofold. First, the statement uses only the information coming from the asymptotic operator and second, and more importantly, by using the splitting condition, we are able to extend the range of possible $q$'s significantly whenever $p<d-2$.

Homogenization of nonlinear elliptic systems in nonreflexive Musielak-Orlicz spaces

We study the homogenization process for families of strongly nonlinear elliptic systems with the homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. The growth and the coercivity of the elliptic operator is assumed to be indicated by a general inhomogeneous anisotropic $N-$function, which may be possibly also dependent on the spatial variable, i.e., the homogenization process will change the characteristic function spaces at each step. Such a problem is well known and there exists many positive results for the function satisfying $Δ_2$ and $\nabla_2$ conditions an being in addition Hölder continuous with respect to the spatial variable. We shall show that cases these conditions can be neglected and will deal with a rather general problem in general function space setting.

Existence analysis for incompressible fluid model of electrically charged chemically reacting and heat conducting mixtures

We deal with a three dimensional model based on the use of barycentric velocity that describes unsteady flows of a heat conducting electrically charged multicomponent chemically reacting non-Newtonian fluid. We show that under certain assumptions on data and the constitutive relations for such a fluid there exists a global in time and large data weak solution. The paper has two key novelties. The first one is that we present a model that is thermodynamically and mechanically consistent and that is able to describe the cross effects in a generality never considered before, i.e., we cover the so-called Soret effect, Dufour effect, Ohm law, Peltier effect, Joul heating, Thompson effect, Seebeck effect and also the generalized Fick law. The second key novelty is that contrary to the previous works on the similar topic, we do not need to deal with the energy equality method and therefore we are able to cover a large range of power-law parameters in the Cauchy-stress. In particular, we cover even the Newtonian case (which is the most used model), for which the existence analysis was missing.

Existence and smoothness for a class of $n$D models in elasticity theory of small deformations

We consider a model for deformations of a homogeneous isotropic body, whose shear modulus remains constant, but its bulk modulus can be a highly nonlinear function. We show that for a general class of such models, in an arbitrary space dimension, the respective PDE problem has a unique solution. Moreover, this solution enjoys interior smoothness. This is the first regularity result for elasticity problems that covers the most natural space dimension $3$ and that captures behaviour of many typical elastic materials (considered in the small deformations) like rubber, polymer gels or concrete.

Large data analysis for Kolmogorov's two-equation model of turbulence

We establish long-time and large-data existence of a suitable weak solution to three-dimensional internal unsteady flows described by Kolmogorov's two-equation model of turbulence. The governing system of equations is completed by initial and boundary conditions; concerning the velocity we consider generalized stick-slip boundary conditions. The fact that the admissible class of boundary conditions includes various types of slipping mechanisms on the boundary makes the result robust from the point of view of possible applications.

Globally Lipschitz minimizers for variational problems with linear growth

We study the minimization of convex, variational integrals of linear growth among all functions in the Sobolev space $W^{1,1}$ with prescribed boundary values (or its equivalent formulation as a boundary value problem for a degenerately elliptic Euler--Lagrange equation). Due to insufficient compactness properties of these Dirichlet classes, the existence of solutions does not follow in a standard way by the direct method in the calculus of variations and in fact might fail, as it is well-known already for the non-parametric minimal surface problem. Assuming radial structure, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition on the integrand such that the Dirichlet problem is in general solvable, in the sense that a Lipschitz solution exists for any regular domain and all prescribed regular boundary values, via the construction of appropriate barrier functions in the tradition of Serrin's paper [19].

Homogenization of a stationary flow of a generalized Newtonian fluid

We perform the homogenization process avoiding the necessity of testing the weak formulation of the initial and homogenized systems by corresponding weak solutions. We show that the stress tensor for homogenized problem depends on the gradient involving the limit of a sequence selected from a family of solutions of initial problems.

On unified theory for scalar conservation laws with fluxes and sources discontinuous with respect to the unknown

We deal with the Cauchy problem for multi-dimensional scalar conservation laws, where the fluxes and the source terms can be discontinuous functions of the unknown. The main novelty of the paper is the introduction of a~kinetic formulation for the considered problem. To handle the discontinuities we work in the framework of re-parametrization of the flux and the source functions, which was previously used for Kružkov entropy solutions. Within this approach we obtain a fairly complete picture: existence of entropy measure valued solutions, entropy weak solutions and their equivalence to the kinetic solution. The results of existence and uniqueness follow under the assumption of Hölder continuity at zero of the flux. The source term, what is another novelty for the studies on problems with discontinuous flux, is only assumed to be one-side Lipschitz, not necessarily monotone function.

A unified theory for some non Newtonian fluids under singular forcing

We consider a model of steady, incompressible non-Newtonian flow with neglected convective term under external forcing. Our structural assumptions allow for certain non-degenerate power-law or Carreau-type fluids. We provide the full-range theory, namely existence, optimal regularity and uniqueness of solutions, not only with respect to forcing belonging to Lebesgue spaces, but also with respect to their refinements, namely the weighted Lebesgue spaces, with weights in a respective Muckenhoupt class. The analytical highlight is derivation of existence and uniqueness theory for forcing with its regularity well-below the natural duality exponent, via estimates in weighted spaces. It is a generalization of [Bulíček, Diening, Schwarzacher] to incompressible fluids. Moreover, two technical results, needed for our analysis, may be useful for further studies. They are: the solenoidal, weighted, biting div-curl lemma and the solenoidal Lipschitz approximations on domains.

Existence of very weak solutions to elliptic systems of p-Laplacian type

We study vector valued solutions to non-linear elliptic partial differential equations with $p$-growth. Existence of a solution is shown in case the right hand side is the divergence of a function which is only $q$ integrable, where $q$ is strictly below but close to the duality exponent $p'$. It implies that possibly degenerate operators of $p$-Laplacian type are well posed in a larger class then the natural space of existence. The key novelty here is a refined a priori estimate, that recovers a duality relation between the right hand side and the solution in terms of weighted Lebesgue spaces.

Existence, uniqueness and optimal regularity results for very weak solutions to nonlinear elliptic systems

We establish existence, uniqueness and optimal regularity results for very weak solutions to certain nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems. We introduce structural asymptotic assumptions of Uhlenbeck type on the nonlinearity, which are sufficient and in many cases also necessary for building such a theory. We provide a unified approach that leads qualitatively to the same theory as that one available for linear elliptic problems with continuous coeffcients, e.g. the Poisson equation. The result is based on several novel tools that are of independent interest: local and global estimates for (non)linear elliptic systems in weighted Lebesgue spaces with Muckenhoupt weights, a generalization of the celebrated div{curl lemma for identification of a weak limit in border line spaces and the introduction of a Lipschitz approximation that is stable in weighted Sobolev spaces.

On the existence of integrable solutions to nonlinear elliptic systems and variational problems with linear growth

We investigate the properties of certain elliptic systems leading, a~priori, to solutions that belong to the space of Radon measures. We show that if the problem is equipped with a so-called asymptotic Uhlenbeck structure, then the solution can in fact be understood as a standard weak solution, with one proviso: analogously as in the case of minimal surface equations, the attainment of the boundary value is penalized by a measure supported on (a subset of) the boundary, which, for the class of problems under consideration here, is the part of the boundary where a Neumann boundary condition is imposed.

Analysis of a viscosity model for concentrated polymers

The paper is concerned with a class of mathematical models for polymeric fluids, which involves the coupling of the Navier-Stokes equations for a viscous, incompressible, constant-density fluid with a parabolic-hyperbolic integro-differential equation describing the evolution of the polymer distribution function in the solvent, and a parabolic integro-differential equation for the evolution of the monomer density function in the solvent. The viscosity coefficient appearing in the balance of linear momentum equation in the Navier-Stokes system includes dependence on the shear-rate as well as on the weight-averaged polymer chain length. The system of partial differential equations under consideration captures the impact of polymerization and depolymerization effects on the viscosity of the fluid. We prove the existence of global-in-time, large-data weak solutions under fairly general hypotheses.

Unsteady Flows of Fluids with Pressure Dependent Viscosity in Unbounded Domains

In order to describe behavior of various liquid-like materials at high pressures, incompressible fluid models with pressure dependent viscosity seem to be a suitable choice. In the context of implicit constitutive relations involving the Cauchy stress and the velocity gradient these models are consistent with standard procedures of continuum mechanics. Understanding mathematical properties of governing equations is connected with various types of idealization, some of them lead to studies in unbounded domains. In this paper, we first bring up several characteristic features concerning fluids with pressure dependent viscosity. Then we study three-dimensional flows of a class of fluids with the viscosity depending on the pressure and the shear rate. By means of higher differentiability methods we establish large data existence of a weak solution for the Cauchy problem. This seems to be a first result that analyzes flows of considered fluids in unbounded domains. Even in the context of purely shear rate dependent fluids of a power-law type the result presented here improves some of earlier works.
