AdS/CFT and large-N volume independence

We study the Eguchi-Kawai reduction in the strong-coupling domain of gauge theories via the gravity dual of N=4 super-Yang-Mills on R^3xS^1. We show that D-branes geometrize volume independence in the center-symmetric vacuum and give supergravity predictions for the range of validity of reduced large-N models at strong coupling.

Realization of Center Symmetry in Two Adjoint Flavor Large-N Yang-Mills

We report on the results of numerical simulations of $SU(N)$ lattice Yang Mills with two flavors of (light) Wilson fermion in the adjoint representation. We analytically and numerically address the question of center symmetry realization on lattices with $Γ$ sites in each direction in the large-$N$ limit. We show, by a weak coupling calculation that, for massless fermions, center symmetry realization is independent of $Γ$, and is unbroken. Then, we extend our result by conducting simulations at non zero mass and finite gauge coupling. Our results indicate that center symmetry is intact for a range of fermion mass in the vicinity of the critical line on lattices of volume $2^4$. This observation makes it possible to compute infinite volume physical observables using small volume simulations in the limit $N\to\infty$, with possible applications to the determination of the conformal window in gauge theories with adjoint fermions.

Comments on large-N volume independence

We study aspects of the large-N volume independence on R**3 x L**G, where L**G is a G-site lattice for Yang-Mills theory with adjoint Wilson-fermions. We find the critical number of lattice sites above which the center-symmetry analysis on L**G agrees with the one on the continuum S**1. For Wilson parameter set to one and G>=2, the two analyses agree. One-loop radiative corrections to Wilson-line masses are finite, reminiscent of the UV-insensitivity of the Higgs mass in deconstruction/Little-Higgs theories. Even for theories with G=1, volume independence in QCD(adj) may be guaranteed to work by tuning one low-energy effective field theory parameter. Within the parameter space of the theory, at most three operators of the 3d effective field theory exhibit one-loop UV-sensitivity. This opens the analytical prospect to study 4d non-perturbative physics by using lower dimensional field theories (d=3, in our example).

Conformality or confinement (II): One-flavor CFTs and mixed-representation QCD

We study QCD-like four dimensional theories in the theoretically controlled framework of deformation theory and/or twisted partition function on S*1 x R*3. By using duality, we show that a class of one-flavor theories exhibit new physical phenomena: discrete chiral symmetry breaking induced by the condensation of topological disorder operators, and confinement and the generation of mass gap due to new non-selfdual topological excitations. In the R*4 limit, we argue that the mass gap disappears, the chiral symmetry breaking vacua are of runaway type, and the theory flows to a CFT. We also study mixed-representation theories and find abelian chiral symmetry breaking by topological operators charged under abelian chiral symmetries. These are reminiscent to, but distinct, from Seiberg-Witten theory with matter, where 4d monopoles have non-abelian chiral charge. This examination also helps us refine our recent bounds on the conformal window. In an Addendum, we also discuss mixed vectorlike/chiral representation theories, obtain bounds on their conformal windows, and compare with the all-order beta function results of arXiv:0911.0931.

Exact lattice supersymmetry

We provide an introduction to recent lattice formulations of supersymmetric theories which are invariant under one or more real supersymmetries at nonzero lattice spacing. These include the especially interesting case of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM in four dimensions. We discuss approaches based both on twisted supersymmetry and orbifold-deconstruction techniques and show their equivalence in the case of gauge theories. The presence of an exact supersymmetry reduces and in some cases eliminates the need for fine tuning to achieve a continuum limit invariant under the full supersymmetry of the target theory. We discuss open problems.

Magnetic bion condensation: A new mechanism of confinement and mass gap in four dimensions

In recent work, we derived the long-distance confining dynamics of certain QCD-like gauge theories formulated on small $S^1 \times \R^3$ based on symmetries, an index theorem, and Abelian duality. Here, we give the microscopic derivation. The solution reveals a new mechanism of confinement in QCD(adj) in the regime where we have control over both perturbative and nonperturbative aspects. In particular, consider SU(2) QCD(adj) theory with $1 \leq n_f \leq 4$ Majorana fermions, a theory which undergoes gauge symmetry breaking at small $S^1$. If the magnetic charge of the BPS monopole is normalized to unity, we show that confinement occurs due to condensation of objects with magnetic charge 2, not 1. Because of index theorems, we know that such an object cannot be a two identical monopole configuration. Its net topological charge must vanish, and hence it must be topologically indistinguishable from the perturbative vacuum. We construct such non-self-dual topological excitations, the magnetically charged, topologically null molecules of a BPS monopole and ${\bar{\rm KK}}$ antimonopole, which we refer to as magnetic bions. An immediate puzzle with this proposal is the apparent Coulomb repulsion between the BPS-${\bar{\rm KK}}$ pair. An attraction which overcomes the Coulomb repulsion between the two is induced by $2n_f$-fermion exchange. Bion condensation is also the mechanism of confinement in $\N=1$ SYM on the same four-manifold. The SU(N) generalization hints a possible hidden integrability behind nonsupersymmetric QCD of affine Toda type, and allows us to analytically compute the mass gap in the gauge sector. We currently do not know the extension to $\R^4$.

Conformality or confinement: (IR)relevance of topological excitations

We study aspects of the conformality to confinement transition for non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with fermions in arbitrary chiral or vectorlike representations. We use the presence or absence of mass gap for gauge fluctuations as an identifier of the infrared behavior. Present-day understanding does not allow the mass gap for gauge fluctuations to be computed on R*4. However, recent progress allows its non-perturbative computation on R*3xS*1 by using either the twisted partition function or deformation theory, for a range of S*1 sizes depending on the theory. For small number of fermions, Nf, we show that the mass gap increases with increasing radius, due to the non-dilution of monopoles and bions, the topological excitations relevant for confinement on R*3xS*1. For sufficiently large Nf, we show that the mass gap decreases with increasing radius. In a class of theories, we claim that the decompactification limit can be taken while remaining within the region of validity of semi-classical techniques, giving the first examples of semiclassically solvable Yang-Mills theories at any size S*1. For general non-supersymmetric vectorlike or chiral theories, we conjecture that the change in the behavior of the mass gap on R*3xS*1 as a function of the radius occurs near the lower boundary of the conformal window and give non-perturbative estimates of its value. For vectorlike theories, we compare our estimates of the conformal window with existing lattice results, truncations of the Schwinger-Dyson equations, NSVZ beta function-inspired estimates, and degree of freedom counting criteria. For multi-generation chiral gauge theories, to the best of our knowledge, our estimates of the conformal window are the only known ones.

Chiral gauge dynamics and dynamical supersymmetry breaking

We study the dynamics of a chiral SU(2) gauge theory with a Weyl fermion in the I=3/2 representation and of its supersymmetric generalization. In the former, we find a new and exotic mechanism of confinement, induced by topological excitations that we refer to as magnetic quintets. The supersymmetric version was examined earlier in the context of dynamical supersymmetry breaking by Intriligator, Seiberg, and Shenker, who showed that if this gauge theory confines at the origin of moduli space, one may break supersymmetry by adding a tree level superpotential. We examine the dynamics by deforming the theory on S^1 x R^3, and show that the infrared behavior of this theory is an interacting CFT at small S^1. We argue that this continues to hold at large S^1, and if so, that supersymmetry must remain unbroken. Our methods also provide the microscopic origin of various superpotentials in SQCD on S^1 x R^3 - which were previously obtained by using symmetry and holomorphy - and resolve a long standing interpretational puzzle concerning a flux operator discovered by Affleck, Harvey, and Witten. It is generated by a topological excitation, a "magnetic bion", whose stability is due to fermion pair exchange between its constituents. We also briefly comment on composite monopole operators as leading effects in two dimensional anti-ferromagnets.

Index theorem for topological excitations on R^3 * S^1 and Chern-Simons theory

We derive an index theorem for the Dirac operator in the background of various topological excitations on an R^3 \times S^1 geometry. The index theorem provides more refined data than the APS index for an instanton on R^4 and reproduces it in decompactification limit. In the R^3 limit, it reduces to the Callias index theorem. The index is expressed in terms of topological charge and the eta-invariant associated with the boundary Dirac operator. Neither topological charge nor eta-invariant is typically an integer, however, the non-integer parts cancel to give an integer-valued index. Our derivation is based on axial current non-conservation--an exact operator identity valid on any four-manifold--and on the existence of a center symmetric, or approximately center symmetric, boundary holonomy (Wilson line). We expect the index theorem to usefully apply to many physical systems of interest, such as low temperature (large S^1, confined) phases of gauge theories, center stabilized Yang-Mills theories with vector-like or chiral matter (at S^1 of any size), and supersymmetric gauge theories with supersymmetry-preserving boundary conditions (also at any S^1). In QCD-like and chiral gauge theories, the index theorem should shed light into the nature of topological excitations responsible for chiral symmetry breaking and the generation of mass gap in the gauge sector. We also show that imposing chirally-twisted boundary condition in gauge theories with fermions induces a Chern-Simons term in the infrared. This suggests that some QCD-like gauge theories should possess components with a topological Chern-Simons phase in the small S^1 regime.

Deformed matrix models, supersymmetric lattice twists and N=1/4 supersymmetry

A manifestly supersymmetric nonperturbative matrix regularization for a twisted version of N=(8,8) theory on a curved background (a two-sphere) is constructed. Both continuum and the matrix regularization respect four exact scalar supersymmetries under a twisted version of the supersymmetry algebra. We then discuss a succinct Q=1 deformed matrix model regularization of N=4 SYM in d=4, which is equivalent to a non-commutative $A_4^*$ orbifold lattice formulation. Motivated by recent progress in supersymmetric lattices, we also propose a N=1/4 supersymmetry preserving deformation of N=4 SYM theory on $\R^4$. In this class of N=1/4 theories, both the regularized and continuum theory respect the same set of (scalar) supersymmetry. By using the equivalence of the deformed matrix models with the lattice formulations, we give a very simple physical argument on why the exact lattice supersymmetry must be a subset of scalar subalgebra. This argument disagrees with the recent claims of the link approach, for which we give a new interpretation.

On Yang-Mills Theories with Chiral Matter at Strong Coupling

Strong coupling dynamics of Yang--Mills theories with chiral fermion content remained largely elusive despite much effort over the years. In this work, we propose a dynamical framework in which we can address non-perturbative properties of chiral, non-supersymmetric gauge theories, in particular, chiral quiver theories on $S_1 \times R_3 $. Double-trace deformations are used to stabilize the center-symmetric vacuum. This allows one to smoothly connect small-$r(S_1)$ to large-$r(S_1)$ physics ($R_4$ is the limiting case) where the double-trace deformations are switched off. In particular, occurrence of the mass gap in the gauge sector and linear confinement due to bions are analytically demonstrated. We find the pattern of the chiral symmetry realization which depends on the structure of the ring operators, a novel class of topological excitations. The deformed chiral theory, unlike the undeformed one, satisfies volume independence down to arbitrarily small volumes (a working Eguchi--Kawai reduction) in the large $N$ limit. This equivalence, may open new perspectives on strong coupling chiral gauge theories on $R_4$.

Quantum phase transitions and new scales in QCD-like theories

It is commonly believed that in confining vector-like gauge theories the center and chiral symmetry realizations are parametrically entangled, and if phase transitions occur, they must take place around the strong scale $Λ^{-1}$ of the gauge theory. We demonstrate that (non-thermal) vector-like theories formulated on ${\mathbb R}^{3} \times S^1$ where $S^1$ is a spatial circle exhibit new dynamical scales and new phenomena. There are chiral phase transitions taking place at $Λ^{-1}/N_c$ in the absence of any change in center symmetry. $Λ^{-1}/N_c$, invisible in (planar) perturbation theory, is also the scale where abelian versus non-abelian confinement regimes meet. Large $N_c$ volume independence (a working Eguchi-Kawai reduction) provides new insights and independently confirms the existence of these scales. We show that certain phases and scales are outside the reach of holographic (supergravity) modeling of QCD.

Topological symmetry, spin liquids and CFT duals of Polyakov model with massless fermions

We prove the absence of a mass gap and confinement in the Polyakov model with massless complex fermions in any representation of the gauge group. A $U(1)_{*}$ topological shift symmetry protects the masslessness of one dual photon. This symmetry emerges in the IR as a consequence of the Callias index theorem and abelian duality. For matter in the fundamental representation, the infrared limits of this class of theories interpolate between weakly and strongly coupled conformal field theory (CFT) depending on the number of flavors, and provide an infinite class of CFTs in $d=3$ dimensions. The long distance physics of the model is same as certain stable spin liquids. Altering the topology of the adjoint Higgs field by turning it into a compact scalar does not change the long distance dynamics in perturbation theory, however, non-perturbative effects lead to a mass gap for the gauge fluctuations. This provides conceptual clarity to many subtle issues about compact QED$_3$ discussed in the context of quantum magnets, spin liquids and phase fluctuation models in cuprate superconductors. These constructions also provide new insights into zero temperature gauge theory dynamics on $\R^{2,1}$ and $\R^{2,1} \times S^1$. The confined versus deconfined long distance dynamics is characterized by a discrete versus continuous topological symmetry.

Center-stabilized Yang-Mills theory: confinement and large $N$ volume independence

We examine a double trace deformation of SU(N) Yang-Mills theory which, for large $N$ and large volume, is equivalent to unmodified Yang-Mills theory up to $O(1/N^2)$ corrections. In contrast to the unmodified theory, large $N$ volume independence is valid in the deformed theory down to arbitrarily small volumes. The double trace deformation prevents the spontaneous breaking of center symmetry which would otherwise disrupt large $N$ volume independence in small volumes. For small values of $N$, if the theory is formulated on $\R^3 \times S^1$ with a sufficiently small compactification size $L$, then an analytic treatment of the non-perturbative dynamics of the deformed theory is possible. In this regime, we show that the deformed Yang-Mills theory has a mass gap and exhibits linear confinement. Increasing the circumference $L$ or number of colors $N$ decreases the separation of scales on which the analytic treatment relies. However, there are no order parameters which distinguish the small and large radius regimes. Consequently, for small $N$ the deformed theory provides a novel example of a locally four-dimensional pure gauge theory in which one has analytic control over confinement, while for large $N$ it provides a simple fully reduced model for Yang-Mills theory. The construction is easily generalized to QCD and other QCD-like theories.

QCD-like Theories on R_3\times S_1: a Smooth Journey from Small to Large r(S_1) with Double-Trace Deformations

We consider QCD-like theories with one massless fermion in various representations of the gauge group SU$(N)$. The theories are formulated on $R_3\times S_1$. In the decompactification limit of large $r(S_1)$ all these theories are characterized by confinement, mass gap and spontaneous breaking of a (discrete) chiral symmetry ($χ$SB). At small $r(S_1)$, in order to stabilize the vacua of these theories at a center-symmetric point, we suggest to perform a double trace deformation. With these deformation, the theories at hand are at weak coupling at small $r(S_1)$ and yet exhibit basic features of the large-$r(S_1)$ limit: confinement and $χ$SB. We calculate the string tension, mass gap, bifermion condensates and $θ$ dependence. The double-trace deformation becomes dynamically irrelevant at large $r(S_1)$. Despite the fact that at small $r(S_1)$ confinement is Abelian, while it is expected to be non-Abelian at large $r(S_1)$, we argue that small and large-$r(S_1)$ physics are continuously connected. If so, one can use small-$r(S_1)$ laboratory to extract lessons about QCD and QCD-like theories on $R_4$.

Planar Limit of Orientifold Field Theories and Emergent Center Symmetry

We consider orientifold field theories (i.e. SU(N) Yang--Mills theories with fermions in the two-index symmetric or antisymmetric representations) on R3xS1 where the compact dimension can be either temporal or spatial. These theories are planar equivalent to supersymmetric Yang--Mills. The latter has Z_N center symmetry. The famous Polyakov criterion establishing confinement-deconfinement phase transition as that from Z_N symmetric to Z_N broken phase applies. At the Lagrangian level the orientifold theories have at most a Z_2 center. We discuss how the full Z_N center symmetry dynamically emerges in the orientifold theories in the limit N-->infinity. In the confining phase the manifestation of this enhancement is the existence of stable k-strings in the large-N limit of the orientifold theories. These strings are identical to those of supersymmetric Yang--Mills theories. We argue that critical temperatures (and other features) of the confinement-deconfinement phase transition are the same in the orientifold daughters and their supersymmetric parent up to 1/N corrections. We also discuss the Abelian and non-Abelian confining regimes of four-dimensional QCD-like theories.

Abelian duality, confinement, and chiral symmetry breaking in QCD(adj)

We analyze the vacuum structure of SU(2) QCD with multiple massless adjoint representation fermions formulated on a small spatial $S^1 \times \R^3$. The absence of thermal fluctuations, and the fact that quantum fluctuations favoring the vacuum with unbroken center symmetry in a weakly coupled regime renders the interesting dynamics of these theories analytically calculable. Confinement, the area law behavior for large Wilson loops, and the generation of the mass gap in the gluonic sector are shown analytically. By abelian duality transformation, the long distance effective theory of QCD is mapped into an amalgamation of $d=3$ dimensional Sine-Gordon and NJL models. The duality necessitates going to IR first. In this regime, theory exhibits confinement without continuous chiral symmetry breaking. However, a flavor singlet chiral condensate (which breaks a discrete chiral symmetry) persists at arbitrarily small $S^1$. Under the reasonable assumption that the theory on $\R^4$ exhibits chiral symmetry breaking, there must exist a zero temperature chiral phase transition in the absence of any change in spatial center symmetry realizations.

Phases of $\Nc= \infty$ QCD-like gauge theories on $S^3 \times S^1$ and nonperturbative orbifold-orientifold equivalences

We study the phase diagrams of $\Nc= \infty$ vector-like, asymptotically free gauge theories as a function of volume, on $S^3\times S^1$. The theories of interest are the ones with fermions in two index representations [adjoint, (anti)symmetric, and bifundamental abbreviated as QCD(adj), QCD(AS/S) and QCD(BF)], and are interrelated via orbifold or orientifold projections. The phase diagrams reveal interesting phenomena such as disentangled realizations of chiral and center symmetry, confinement without chiral symmetry breaking, zero temperature chiral transitions, and in some cases, exotic phases which spontaneously break the discrete symmetries such as C, P, T as well as CPT. In a regime where the theories are perturbative, the deconfinement temperature in SYM, and QCD(AS/S/BF) coincide. The thermal phase diagrams of thermal orbifold QCD(BF), orientifold QCD(AS/S), and $\N=1$ SYM coincide, provided charge conjugation symmetry for QCD(AS/S) and $\Z_2$ interchange symmetry of the QCD(BF) are not broken in the phase continously connected to $\R^4$ limit. When the $S^1$ circle is endowed with periodic boundary conditions, the (nonthermal) phase diagrams of orbifold and orientifold QCD are still the same, however, both theories possess chirally symmetric phases which are absent in $\None$ SYM. The match and mismatch of the phase diagrams depending on the spin structure of fermions along the $S^1$ circle is naturally explained in terms of the necessary and sufficient symmetry realization conditions which determine the validity of the nonperturbative orbifold orientifold equivalence.
