Signature of an Ultrafast Photo-Induced Lifshitz Transition in the Nodal-Line Semimetal ZrSiTe

Here we report an ultrafast optical spectroscopic study of the nodal-line semimetal ZrSiTe. Our measurements reveal that, converse to other compounds of the family, the sudden injection of electronic excitations results in a strongly coherent response of an $A_{1g}$ phonon mode which dynamically modifies the distance between Zr and Te atoms and Si layers. "Frozen phonon" DFT calculations, in which band structures are calculated as a function of nuclear position along the phonon mode coordinate, show that large displacements along this mode alter the material's electronic structure significantly, forcing bands to approach and even cross the Fermi energy. The incoherent part of the time domain response reveals that a delayed electronic response at low fluence discontinuously evolves into an instantaneous one for excitation densities larger than $3.43 \times 10^{17}$ cm$^{-3}$. This sudden change of the dissipative channels for electronic excitations is indicative of an ultrafast Lifshitz transition which we tentatively associate to a change in topology of the Fermi surface driven by a symmetry preserving $A_{1g}$ phonon mode.

Transient Drude Response Dominates Near-Infrared Pump-Probe Reflectivity in Nodal-Line Semimetals ZrSiS and ZrSiSe

The ultrafast optical response of two nodal-line semimetals, ZrSiS and ZrSiSe, was studied in the near-infrared using transient reflectivity. The two materials exhibit similar responses, characterized by two features, well resolved in time and energy. The first transient feature decays after a few hundred femtoseconds, while the second lasts for nanoseconds. Using Drude-Lorentz fits of the materials' equilibrium reflectance, we show that the fast response is well-represented by a decrease of the Drude plasma frequency, and the second feature by an increase of the Drude scattering rate. This directly connects the transient data to a physical picture in which carriers, after being excited away from the Fermi energy, return to that vicinity within a few hundred femtoseconds by sharing their excess energy with the phonon bath, resulting in a hot lattice that relaxes only through slow diffusion processes (ns). The emerging picture reveals that the sudden change of the density of carriers at the Fermi level instantaneously modifies the transport properties of the materials on a timescale not compatible with electron phonon thermalization and is largely driven by the reduced density of states at the nodal line.

Penetration depth and gap structure in the antiperovskite oxide superconductor Sr$_{3-x}$SnO revealed by $μ$SR

We report a $μ$SR study on the antiperovskite oxide superconductor Sr$_{3-x}$SnO. With transverse-field $μ$SR, we observed the increase of the muon relaxation rate upon cooling below the superconducting transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}=5.4$ K, evidencing bulk superconductivity. The exponential temperature dependence of the relaxation rate $σ$ at low temperatures suggests a fully gapped superconducting state. We evaluated the zero-temperature penetration depth $λ(0)\propto1/\sqrt{σ(0)}$ to be around 320-1020 nm. Such a large value is consistent with the picture of a doped Dirac semimetal. Moreover, we revealed that the ratio $T_{\mathrm{c}}/λ(0)^{-2}$ is larger than those of ordinary superconductors and is comparable to those of unconventional superconductors. The relatively high $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ for small carrier density may hint at an unconventional pairing mechanism beyond the ordinary phonon-mediated pairing. In addition, zero-field $μ$SR did not provide evidence of broken time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. These features are consistent with the theoretically proposed topological superconducting state in Sr$_{3-x}$SnO, as well as with $s$-wave superconductivity.

Negative ionic states of tin in the oxide superconductor Sr$_{3-x}$SnO revealed by Mössbauer spectroscopy

We report the temperature variation of the $^{119}$Sn-Mössbauer spectra of the antiperovskite (inverse perovskite) oxide superconductor Sr$_{3-x}$SnO. Both superconductive (Sr-deficient) and non-superconductive (nearly stoichiometric) samples exhibit major $γ$-ray absorption with isomer shift similar to that of Mg$_2$Sn. This fact shows that Sr$_{3-x}$SnO contains the metallic anion Sn$^{4-}$, which is rare especially among oxides. In both samples, we observed another $γ$-ray absorption with a larger isomer shift, indicating that there is another ionic state of Sn with a higher oxidation number. The temperature dependence of the absorption intensities reveals that the Sn ions exhibiting larger isomer shifts have a lower energy of the local vibration. The larger isomer shift and lower vibration energy are consistent with the values estimated from the first-principles calculations for hypothetical structures with various Sr-deficiency arrangements. Therefore, we conclude that the additional $γ$-ray absorptions originate from the Sn atoms neighboring the Sr deficiency.

Normal-state properties of the antiperovskite oxide Sr$_{3-x}$SnO revealed by $^{119}$Sn-NMR

We have performed $^{119}$Sn-NMR measurements on the antiperovskite oxide superconductor Sr$_{3-x}$SnO to investigate how its normal state changes with the Sr deficiency. A two-peak structure was observed in the NMR spectra of all the measured samples. This suggests that the phase separation tends to occur between the nearly stoichiometric and heavily Sr-deficient Sr$_{3-x}$SnO phases. The measurement of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ indicates that the Sr-deficient phase shows a conventional metallic behavior due to the heavy hole doping. In contrast, the nearly stoichiometric phase exhibits unusual temperature dependence of $1/T_1$, attributable to the presence of a Dirac-electron band.

Superconductivity in the antiperovskite Dirac-metal oxide Sr$_3$SnO

Oxides with perovskite-based structures have been known as essential materials for fascinating phenomena such as high-temperature and unconventional superconductivity. Discoveries of these oxide superconductors have driven the science community to vastly extend the concepts of strongly correlated electron systems. The base of these materials, the cubic perovskite oxides, $AB$O$_3$, also exhibit superconductivity with $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of up to 30 K, as reported for Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$BiO$_3$. Perovskite oxides have their counterparts, antiperovskite oxides $A_3B$O (or "$B$O$A_3$"), in which the position of metal and oxygen ions are reversed and therefore metallic $B$ ions take unusual negative valence states. However, no superconductivity has been reported among antiperovskite oxides. Here, we report the discovery of the first superconducting antiperovskite oxide Sr$_3$SnO with $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ of around 5 K. Sr$_3$SnO possesses Dirac points in its electronic structure, originating from the inversion of bands with different parities. Based on theoretical analysis, we propose possibility of topological odd-parity superconductivity analogous to the superfluid $^3$He-B, in moderately hole-doped Sr$_3$SnO, originating from unusual orbital texture on the Fermi surface. We envision that this discovery of a new class of oxide superconductor with the inverted valence configuration will stimulate the exploration of topological materials science based on a variety of antiperovskite oxides.
