Cohomology classes of admissible normal functions

We study the map associating the cohomology class of an admissible normal function on the product of punctured disks, and give some sufficient conditions for the surjectivity of the map. We also construct some examples such that the map is not surjective.

Relative Chow-Kunneth decompositions for conic bundles and Prym varieties

We construct a relative Chow-Kunneth decomposition for a conic bundle over a surface such that the middle projector gives the Prym variety of the associated double covering of the discriminant of the conic bundle. This gives a refinement (up to an isogeny) of Beauville's theorem on the relation between the intermediate Jacobian of the conic bundle and the Prym variety of the double covering.

Lowest Weights in Cohomology of Variations of Hodge Structure (II)

Let $X$ be an irreducible complex analytic space with $j:U\into X$ an immersion of a smooth Zariski open subset, and let $\bV$ be a variation of Hodge structure of weight $n$ over $U$. Assume $X$ is compact Kähler. Then provided the local monodromy operators at infinity are quasi-unipotent, $IH^k(X, \bV)$ is known to carry a pure Hodge structure of weight $k+n$, while $H^k(U,\bV)$ carries a mixed Hodge structure of weight $\ge k+n$. In this note it is shown that the image of the natural map $IH^k(X,\bV) \to H^k(U,\bV)$ is the lowest weight part of this mixed Hodge structure. In the algebraic case this easily follows from the formalism of mixed sheaves, but the analytic case is rather complicated, in particular when the complement $X-U$ is not a hypersurface.

A generalization of the Neron models of Green, Griffiths and Kerr

We generalize a construction of the Neron model for a family of intermediate Jacobians due to Green, Griffiths and Kerr by using the theory of mixed Hodge modules. It is a topological group defined over any partial compactification of the base space, and it `graphs' admissible normal functions. Moreover, there is a stratification of the partial compactification such that the restriction over each stratum is a complex Lie group over the stratum.

Generalized Thomas hyperplane sections and relations between vanishing cycles

As is remarked by B. Totaro, R. Thomas essentially proved that the Hodge conjecture is inductively equivalent to the existence of a hyperplane section, called a generalized Thomas hyperplane section, such that the restriction to it of a given primitive Hodge class does not vanish. We study the relations between the vanishing cycles in the cohomology of a general fiber, and show that each relation between the vanishing cycles of type (0,0) with unipotent monodromy around a singular hyperplane section defines a primitive Hodge class such that this singular hyperplane section is a generalized Thomas hyperplane section if and only if the pairing between a given primitive Hodge class and some of the constructed primitive Hodge classes does not vanish. This is a generalization of a construction by P. Griffiths.

Hodge-type conjecture for higher Chow groups

Let X be a smooth quasi-projective variety over the algebraic closure of the rational number field. We show that the cycle map of the higher Chow group to Deligne cohomology is injective and the higher Hodge cycles are generated by the image of the cycle map as conjectured by Beilinson and Jannsen, if the cycle map to Deligne cohomology is injective and the Hodge conjecture is true for certain smooth projective varieties over the algebraic closure of the rational number field. We also verify the conjecture on the surjectivity in the case of the complement of a union of general hypersurfaces in a smooth projective variety.

A generalization of Griffiths theorem on rational integrals, II

We show that the Hodge and pole order filtrations are globally different for sufficiently general singular projective hypersurfaces in case the degree is 3 or 4 assuming the dimension of the projective space is at least 5 or 3 respectively. We then study an algebraic formula for the global Hodge filtration in the ordinary double point case conjectured by the third named author. This is more explicit and easier to calculate than the previous one in this case. We prove a variant of it under the assumption that the image of the singular points by the $e$-fold Veronese embedding consists of linearly independent points, where $e$ is determined only by the dimension and the degree. In particular, the original conjecture is true in case the above condition is satisfied for $e=1$.

On real log canonical thresholds

We introduce real log canonical threshold and real jumping numbers for real algebraic functions. A real jumping number is a root of the $b$-function up to a sign if its difference with the minimal one is less than 1. The real log canonical threshold, which is the minimal real jumping number, coincides up to a sign with the maximal pole of the distribution defined by the complex power of the absolute value of the function. However, this number may be greater than 1 if the codimension of the real zero locus of the function is greater than 1. So it does not necessarily coincide with the maximal root of the b-function up to a sign, nor with the log canonical threshold of the complexification. In fact, the real jumping numbers can be even disjoint from the non-integral jumping numbers of the complexification.

Tate conjecture and mixed perverse sheaves

Using the theory of mixed perverse sheaves, we extend arguments on the Hodge conjecture initiated by Lefschetz and Griffiths to the case of the Tate conjecture, and show that the Tate conjecture for divisors is closely related to the de Rham conjecture for nonproper varieties, finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich groups, and also to some conjectures in the analytic number theory.

Spectrum and multiplier ideals of arbitrary subvarieties

We introduce a spectrum for arbitrary varieties. This generalizes the definition by Steenbrink for hypersurfaces. In the isolated complete intersection singularity case, it coincides with the one given by Ebeling and Steenbrink except for the coefficients of integral exponents. We show a relation to the graded pieces of the multiplier ideals by using a relation to the filtration $V$ of Kashiwara and Malgrange. This implies a partial generalization of a theorem of Budur in the hypersurface case. The point is to consider the direct sum of the graded pieces of the multiplier ideals as a module over the algebra defining the normal cone of the subvariety. We also give a combinatorial description in the case of monomial ideals.

Multiplier ideals, b-function, and spectrum of a hypersurface singularity

We prove that certain roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial (i.e. b-function) are jumping coefficients up to a sign, showing a partial converse of a theorem of L. Ein, R. Lazarsfeld, K.E. Smith, and D. Varolin. We also prove that certain roots are determined by a filtration on the Milnor cohomology, generalizing a theorem of B. Malgrange in the isolated singularity case. This implies a certain relation with the spectrum which is determined by the Hodge filtration, because the above filtration is related to the pole order filtration. For multiplier ideals we prove an explicit formula in the case of locally conical divisors along a stratification, generalizing a formula of Mustata in the case of hyperplane arrangements. We also give another proof of a formula of U. Walther on the b-function of a generic hyperplane arrangement, including the multiplicity of -1.

Introduction to a theory of b-functions

We give an introduction to a theory of b-functions, i.e. Bernstein-Sato polynomials. After reviewing some facts from D-modules, we introduce b-functions including the one for arbitrary ideals of the structure sheaf. We explain the relation with singularities, multiplier ideals, etc., and calculate the b-functions of monomial ideals and also of hyperplane arrangements in certain cases.

Brieskorn modules and Gauss-Manin systems for non isolated hypersurface singularities

We study the Brieskorn modules associated to a germ of holomorphic function with non-isolated singularities, and show that the Brieskorn module has naturally a structure of a module over the ring of microdifferential operators of nonpositive degree, and that the kernel of the morphism to the Gauss-Manin system coincides with the torsion part for the action of $t$ and also with that for the action of the inverse of the Gauss-Manin connection. This torsion part is not finitely generated in general, and we give a sufficient condition for the finiteness. We also prove a Thom-Sebastiani type theorem for the sheaf of Brieskorn modules in the case one of two functions has an isolated singularity.

Weight filtration on the cohomology of algebraic varieties

We show that the etale cohomology (with compact supports) of an algebraic variety $X$ over an algebraically closed field has the canonical weight filtration $W$, and prove that the middle weight part of the cohomology with compact supports of $X$ is a subspace of the intersection cohomology of a compactification $X'$ of X, or equivalently, the middle weight part of the (so-called) Borel-Moore homology of $X$ is a quotient of the intersection cohomology of $X'$. We are informed that this has been shown by A. Weber in the case $X$ is proper (and $k=\bC$) using a theorem of G. Barthel, J.-P. Brasselet, K.-H. Fieseler, O. Gabber and L. Kaup on morphisms between intersection complexes. We show that the assertion immediately follows from Gabber's purity theorem for intersection complexes.

Chow-Kunneth decomposition for varieties with low cohomological level

We show that a smooth projective variety admits a Chow-Kunneth decomposition if the cohomology has level at most one except for the middle degree. This can be extended to the relative case in a weak sense if the morphism has only isolated singularities, the base space is 1-dimensional, and the generic fiber satisfies the above condition.

A generalization of Griffiths' theorem on rational integrals

We generalize Griffiths' theorem on the Hodge filtration of the primitive cohomology of a smooth projective hypersurface, using the local Bernstein-Sato polynomials, the V-filtration of Kashiwara and Malgrange along the hypersurface and the Brieskorn module of the global defining equation of the hypersurface.
