Bernstein-Sato polynomials of arbitrary varieties

We introduce the notion of Bernstein-Sato polynomial of an arbitrary variety (which is not necessarily reduced nor irreducible), using the theory of V-filtrations of M. Kashiwara and B. Malgrange. We prove that the decreasing filtration by multiplier ideals coincides essentially with the restriction of the V-filtration. This implies a relation between the roots of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial and the jumping coefficients of the multiplier ideals, and also a criterion for rational singularities in terms of the maximal root of the polynomial in the case of a reduced complete intersection. These are generalizations of the hypersurface case. We can calculate the polynomials explicitly in the case of monomial ideals.

Direct image of logarithmic complexes and infinitesimal invariants of cycles

We show that the direct image of the filtered logarithmic de Rham complex is a direct sum of filtered logarithmic complexes with coefficients in variations of Hodge structures, using a generalization of the decomposition theorem of Beilinson, Bernstein and Deligne to the case of filtered $D$-modules. The advantage of using the logarithmic complexes is that we have the strictness of the Hodge filtration by Deligne after taking the cohomology group in the projective case. As a corollary, we get the total infinitesimal invariant of a (higher) cycle in a direct sum of the cohomology of filtered logarithmic complexes with coefficients, and this is essentially equivalent to the cohomology class of the cycle.

Monodromy of a family of hypersurfaces containing a given subvariety

For a subvariety of a smooth projective variety, consider the family of smooth hypersurfaces of sufficiently large degree containing it, and take the quotient of the middle cohomology of the hypersurfaces by the cohomology of the ambient variety and also by the cycle classes of the irreducible components of the subvariety. Using Deligne's semisimplicity theorem together with Steenbrink's theory for semistable degenerations, we give a simpler proof of the first author's theorem (with a better bound of the degree of hypersurfaces) that this monodromy representation is irreducible.

Some consequences of perversity of vanishing cycles

For a holomorphic function on a complex manifold, we show that the vanishing cohomology of lower degree at a point is determined by that for the points near it, using the perversity of the vanishing cycle complex. We calculate it explicitly in the case the hypersurface has simple normal crossings outside the point. We also give some applications to the monodromy.

Deligne's Conjecture on 1-Motives

We reformulate a conjecture of Deligne on 1-motives by using the integral weight filtration of Gillet and Soulé on cohomology, and prove it. This implies the original conjecture up to isogeny. If the degree of cohomology is at most two, we can prove the conjecture for the Hodge realization without isogeny, and even for 1-motives with torsion.

Multiplier ideals, V-filtration, and spectrum

For an effective divisor on a smooth algebraic variety or a complex manifold, we show that the associated multiplier ideals coincide essentially with the filtration induced by the filtration V constructed by B. Malgrange and M. Kashiwara. This implies another proof of a theorem of L. Ein, R. Lazarsfeld, K.E. Smith and D. Varolin that any jumping coefficient in the interval (0,1] is a root of the Bernstein-Sato polynomial up to sign. We also give a refinement (using mixed Hodge modules) of the formula for the coefficients of the spectrum for exponents not greater than one or greater than the dimension of the variety minus one.

Monodromy Filtration and Positivity

We study Deligne's conjecture on the monodromy weight filtration on the nearby cycles in the mixed characteristic case, and reduce it to the nondegeneracy of certain pairings in the semistable case. We also prove a related conjecture of Rapoport and Zink which uses only the image of the Cech restriction morphism, if Deligne's conjecture holds for a general hyperplane section. In general we show that Deligne's conjecture is true if the standard conjectures hold.

Filtrations on the Chow groups and transcendence degree

For a smooth complex projective variety X defined over a number field, we have filtrations on the Chow groups depending of the choice of realizations. If the realization consists of mixed Hodge structure without any additional structure, we can show that the obtained filtration coincides with the filtration of Green and Griffiths, assuming the Hodge conjecture. In the case the realizations contain Hodge structure and etale cohomology, we prove that if the second graded piece of the filtration does not vanish, it contains a nonzero element which is represented by a cycle defined over a field of transcendence degree one. This may be viewed as a refinement of results of Nori, Schoen, and Green-Griffiths-Paranjape. For higher graded pieces we have a similar assertion assuming a conjecture of Beilinson and Grothendieck's generalized Hodge conjecture.

Bloch's Conjecture, Deligne Cohomology and Higher Chow Groups

We express the kernel of Griffiths' Abel-Jacobi map by using the inductive limit of Deligne cohomology in the generalized sense (i.e. the absolute Hodge cohomology of A. Beilinson). This generalizes a result of L. Barbieri-Viale and V. Srinivas in the surface case. We then show that the Abel-Jacobi map for codimension 2 cycles and the Albanese map are bijective if a general hyperplane section is a surface for which Bloch's conjecture is proved. In certain cases we verify Nori's conjecture on the Griffiths group. We also prove a weak Lefschetz-type theorem for (higher) Chow groups, generalize a formula for the Abel-Jacobi map of higher cycles due to Beilinson and Levine to the smooth non proper case, and give a sufficient condition for the nonvanishing of the transcendental part of the image by the Abel-Jacobi map of a higher cycle on an elliptic surface, together with some examples.

Nonvanishing of External Products for Higher Chow Groups

Consider an external product of a higher cycle and a usual cycle which is algebraically equivalent to zero. Assume there exists an algebraically closed subfield k such that the higher cycle and its ambient variety are defined over k, but the image of the usual cycle by the Abel-Jacobi map is not. Then we prove that the external product is nonzero if the image of the higher cycle by the cycle map to the reduced Deligne cohomology does not vanish. We also give examples of indecomposable higher cycles on even dimensional hypersurfaces of degree at least four in a projective space such that the last condition is satisfied.

Monodromy at Infinity and the Weights of Cohomology

We show that for a polynomial map, the size of the Jordan blocks for the eigenvalue 1 of the monodromy at infinity is bounded by the multiplicity of the reduced divisor at infinity of a good compactification of a general fiber. The existence of such Jordan blocks is related to global invariant cycles of the graded pieces of the weight filtration. These imply some applications to period integrals. We also show that such a Jordan block of size greater than 1 for the graded pieces of the weight filtration is the restriction of a strictly larger Jordan block for the total cohomology group. If there are no singularities at infinity, we have a more precise statement on the monodromy.

Cycle Map for Strictly Decomposable Cycles

We introduce a class of cycles, called nondegenerate, strictly decomposable cycles, and show that the image of each cycle in this class under the refined cycle map to an extension group in the derived category of arithmetic mixed Hodge structures does not vanish. This class contains certain cycles in the kernel of the Abel-Jacobi map. The construction gives a refinement of Nori's argument in the case of a self-product of a curve. As an application, we show that a higher cycle which is not annihilated by the reduced higher Abel-Jacobi map produces uncountably many indecomposable higher cycles on the product with a variety having a nonzero global 1-form.

Refined Cycle Maps

We explain the theory of refined cycle maps associated to arithmetic mixed sheaves. This includes the case of arithmetic mixed Hodge structures, and is closely related to work of Asakura, Beilinson, Bloch, Green, Griffiths, Mueller-Stach, Murre, Voisin and others.

On Mildenhall's Theorem

We show that Mildenhall's theorem implies that the indecomposable higher Chow group of a self-product of an elliptic curve over the complex number field is infinite dimensional, if the elliptic curve is modular and defined over rational numbers. For the moment we cannot prove even the nontriviality of the indecomposable higher Chow group by a complex analytic method in this case.

Arithmetic Mixed Sheaves

We give a formalism of arithmetic mixed sheaves including the case of arithmetic mixed Hodge structures, and show the nonvanishing of certain higher extension groups, and also the nontriviality of the second Abel-Jacobi map for zero cycles on a smooth proper complex variety of any dimension under the existence of a nontrivial global two-form. For two codimensional cycles, the injectivity of the cycle map is reduced to that of the Abel-Jacobi map for smooth projective varieties over number fields. (This shows that Asakura's additional hypothesis is unnecessary). Here it is also possible to use the systems of realizations in the definition of the cycle map and the Abel-Jacobi map. Some arguments can be extended to higher Chow groups, and we get evidence for a conjecture of C. Voisin on the countability of indecomposable higher cycles.
