A Finite Element Approximation for a Class of Caputo Time-Fractional Diffusion Equations

We develop a fully discrete scheme for time-fractional diffusion equations by using a finite difference method in time and a finite element method in space. The fractional derivatives are used in Caputo sense. Stability and error estimates are derived. The accuracy and efficiency of the presented method is shown by conducting two numerical examples.

Optimal control of a nonlocal thermistor problem with ABC fractional time derivatives

We study an optimal control problem associated to a fractional nonlocal thermistor problem involving the ABC (Atangana-Baleanu-Caputo) fractional time derivative. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of solution. Then, we show that an optimal control exists. Moreover, we obtain the optimality system that characterizes the control.

Analysis of fractional integro-differential equations of thermistor type

We survey methods and results of fractional differential equations in which an unknown function is under the operation of integration and/or differentiation of fractional order. As an illustrative example, we review results on fractional integral and differential equations of thermistor type. Several nonlocal problems are considered: with Riemann-Liouville, Caputo, and time-scale fractional operators. Existence and uniqueness of positive solutions are obtained through suitable fixed-point theorems in proper Banach spaces. Additionally, existence and continuation theorems are given, ensuring global existence.

Galerkin Spectral Method for the Fractional Nonlocal Thermistor Problem

We develop and analyse a numerical method for the time-fractional nonlocal thermistor problem. By rigorous proofs, some error estimates in different contexts are derived, showing that the combination of the backward differentiation in time and the Galerkin spectral method in space leads, for an enough smooth solution, to an approximation of exponential convergence in space.

Noether's Theorem for Control Problems on Time Scales

We prove a generalization of Noether's theorem for optimal control problems defined on time scales. Particularly, our results can be used for discrete-time, quantum, and continuous-time optimal control problems. The generalization involves a one-parameter family of maps which depend also on the control and a Lagrangian which is invariant up to an addition of an exact delta differential. We apply our results to some concrete optimal control problems on an arbitrary time scale.

Optimal Control for a Steady State Dead Oil Isotherm Problem

We study the optimal control of a steady-state dead oil isotherm problem. The problem is described by a system of nonlinear partial differential equations resulting from the traditional modelling of oil engineering within the framework of mechanics of a continuous medium. Existence and regularity results of the optimal control are proved, as well as necessary optimality conditions.

Optimal Control of Nonlocal Thermistor Equations

We are concerned with the optimal control problem of the well known nonlocal thermistor problem, i.e., in studying the heat transfer in the resistor device whose electrical conductivity is strongly dependent on the temperature. Existence of an optimal control is proved. The optimality system consisting of the state system coupled with adjoint equations is derived, together with a characterization of the optimal control. Uniqueness of solution to the optimality system, and therefore the uniqueness of the optimal control, is established. The last part is devoted to numerical simulations.

Composition Functionals in Fractional Calculus of Variations

We prove Euler-Lagrange and natural boundary necessary optimality conditions for fractional problems of the calculus of variations which are given by a composition of functionals. Our approach uses the recent notions of Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives and integrals in the sense of Jumarie. As an application, we get optimality conditions for the product and the quotient of fractional variational functionals.

Diamond-alpha Integral Inequalities on Time Scales

The theory of the calculus of variations was recently extended to the more general time scales setting, both for delta and nabla integrals. The primary purpose of this paper is to further extend the theory on time scales, by establishing some basic diamond-alpha dynamic integral inequalities. We prove generalized versions of Hölder, Cauchy-Schwarz, Minkowski, and Jensen's inequalities. For the particular case when alpha is equal to one or alpha is equal to zero one gets, respectively, correspondent delta and nabla inequalities. If we further restrict ourselves by fixing the time scale to the real or integer numbers, then we obtain the classical inequalities, whose role in optimal control is well known. By analogy, we trust that the diamond-alpha integral inequalities we prove here will be important in the study of control systems on times scales.

Diamond-$α$ Jensen's Inequality on Time Scales

The theory and applications of dynamic derivatives on time scales has recently received considerable attention. The primary purpose of this paper is to give basic properties of diamond-$α$ derivatives which are a linear combination of delta and nabla dynamic derivatives on time scales. We prove a generalized version of Jensen's inequality on time scales via the diamond-$α$ integral and present some corollaries, including Hölder's and Minkowski's diamond-$α$ integral inequalities.
