Joint Sensing, Communication, and Computation Resource Allocation for Cooperative Perception in Fog-Based Vehicular Networks

To enlarge the perception range and reliability of individual autonomous vehicles, cooperative perception has been received much attention. However, considering the high volume of shared messages, limited bandwidth and computation resources in vehicular networks become bottlenecks. In this paper, we investigate how to balance the volume of shared messages and constrained resources in fog-based vehicular networks. To this end, we first characterize sum satisfaction of cooperative perception taking account of its spatial-temporal value and latency performance. Next, the sensing block message, communication resource block, and computation resource are jointly allocated to maximize the sum satisfaction of cooperative perception, while satisfying the maximum latency and sojourn time constraints of vehicles. Owing to its non-convexity, we decouple the original problem into two separate sub-problems and devise corresponding solutions. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme can effectively boost the sum satisfaction of cooperative perception compared with existing baselines.

Optimal Resource Allocation for Delay Minimization in NOMA-MEC Networks

Multi-access edge computing (MEC) can enhance the computing capability of mobile devices, while non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can provide high data rates. Combining these two strategies can effectively benefit the network with spectrum and energy efficiency. In this paper, we investigate the task delay minimization in multi-user NOMA-MEC networks, where multiple users can offload their tasks simultaneously through the same frequency band. We adopt the partial offloading policy, in which each user can partition its computation task into offloading and locally computing parts. We aim to minimize the task delay among users by optimizing their tasks partition ratios and offloading transmit power. The delay minimization problem is first formulated, and it is shown that it is a nonconvex one. By carefully investigating its structure, we transform the original problem into an equivalent quasi-convex. In this way, a bisection search iterative algorithm is proposed in order to achieve the minimum task delay. To reduce the complexity of the proposed algorithm and evaluate its optimality, we further derive closed-form expressions for the optimal task partition ratio and offloading power for the case of two-user NOMA-MEC networks. Simulations demonstrate the convergence and optimality of the proposed algorithm and the effectiveness of the closed-form analysis.

Direct Acyclic Graph based Ledger for Internet of Things: Performance and Security Analysis

Direct Acyclic Graph (DAG)-based ledger and the corresponding consensus algorithm has been identified as a promising technology for Internet of Things (IoT). Compared with Proof-of-Work (PoW) and Proof-of-Stake (PoS) that have been widely used in blockchain, the consensus mechanism designed on DAG structure (simply called as DAG consensus) can overcome some shortcomings such as high resource consumption, high transaction fee, low transaction throughput and long confirmation delay. However, the theoretic analysis on the DAG consensus is an untapped venue to be explored. To this end, based on one of the most typical DAG consensuses, Tangle, we investigate the impact of network load on the performance and security of the DAG-based ledger. Considering unsteady network load, we first propose a Markov chain model to capture the behavior of DAG consensus process under dynamic load conditions. The key performance metrics, i.e., cumulative weight and confirmation delay are analysed based on the proposed model. Then, we leverage a stochastic model to analyse the probability of a successful double-spending attack in different network load regimes. The results can provide an insightful understanding of DAG consensus process, e.g., how the network load affects the confirmation delay and the probability of a successful attack. Meanwhile, we also demonstrate the trade-off between security level and confirmation delay, which can act as a guidance for practical deployment of DAG-based ledgers.

Tradeoff between Ergodic Rate and Delivery Latency in Fog Radio Access Networks

Wireless content caching has recently been considered as an efficient way in fog radio access networks (FRANs) to alleviate the heavy burden on capacity-limited fronthaul links and reduce delivery latency. In this paper, an advanced minimal delay association policy is proposed to minimize latency while guaranteeing spectral efficiency in F-RANs. By utilizing stochastic geometry and queueing theory, closed-form expressions of successful delivery probability, average ergodic rate, and average delivery latency are derived, where both the traditional association policy based on accessing the base station with maximal received power and the proposed minimal delay association policy are concerned. Impacts of key operating parameters on the aforementioned performance metrics are exploited. It is shown that the proposed association policy has a better delivery latency than the traditional association policy. Increasing the cache size of fog-computing based access points (F-APs) can more significantly reduce average delivery latency, compared with increasing the density of F-APs. Meanwhile, the latter comes at the expense of decreasing average ergodic rate. This implies the deployment of large cache size at F-APs rather than high density of F-APs can promote performance effectively in F-RANs.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Mode Selection and Resource Allocation for Cellular V2X Communications

Cellular vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication is crucial to support future diverse vehicular applications. However, for safety-critical applications, unstable vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) links and high signalling overhead of centralized resource allocation approaches become bottlenecks. In this paper, we investigate a joint optimization problem of transmission mode selection and resource allocation for cellular V2X communications. In particular, the problem is formulated as a Markov decision process, and a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based decentralized algorithm is proposed to maximize the sum capacity of vehicle-to-infrastructure users while meeting the latency and reliability requirements of V2V pairs. Moreover, considering training limitation of local DRL models, a two-timescale federated DRL algorithm is developed to help obtain robust model. Wherein, the graph theory based vehicle clustering algorithm is executed on a large timescale and in turn the federated learning algorithm is conducted on a small timescale. Simulation results show that the proposed DRL-based algorithm outperforms other decentralized baselines, and validate the superiority of the two-timescale federated DRL algorithm for newly activated V2V pairs.

Mode Selection and Resource Allocation in Sliced Fog Radio Access Networks: A Reinforcement Learning Approach

The mode selection and resource allocation in fog radio access networks (F-RANs) have been advocated as key techniques to improve spectral and energy efficiency. In this paper, we investigate the joint optimization of mode selection and resource allocation in uplink F-RANs, where both of the traditional user equipments (UEs) and fog UEs are served by constructed network slice instances. The concerned optimization is formulated as a mixed-integer programming problem, and both the orthogonal and multiplexed subchannel allocation strategies are proposed to guarantee the slice isolation. Motivated by the development of machine learning, two reinforcement learning based algorithms are developed to solve the original high complexity problem under traditional and fog UEs' specific performance requirements. The basic idea of the proposals is to generate a good mode selection policy according to the immediate reward fed back by an environment. Simulation results validate the benefits of our proposed algorithms and show that a tradeoff between system power consumption and queue delay can be achieved.

Performance Analysis of Reversible Binding Receptor Based Decode-and-Forward Relay in Molecular Communication Systems

Molecular communication (MC) allows nanomachines to communicate and cooperate with each other in a fluid environment. The diffusion-based MC is popular but is easily constrained by the transmit distance due to the severe attenuation of molecule concentrations. In this letter, we present a decode-and-forward (DF) relay strategy for the reversible binding receptor in the diffusion-based MC system. The time-varying spatial distribution of the information molecules based on the reversible association and dissociation between ligand and receptor at the surface of receiver is characterized. An analytical expression for the evaluation of expected error probability is derived, and the key factors impacting on the performance are exploited. Results show that with a constant molecular budget, the proposal can improve the performance significantly, and the performance gain can be enhanced by optimizing the position of the relay node and the number of molecules assigned to the source node.

When Internet of Things Meets Blockchain: Challenges in Distributed Consensus

Blockchain has been regarded as a promising technology for Internet of Things (IoT), since it provides significant solutions for decentralized network which can address trust and security concerns, high maintenance cost problem, etc. The decentralization provided by blockchain can be largely attributed to the use of consensus mechanism, which enables peer-to-peer trading in a distributed manner without the involvement of any third party. This article starts from introducing the basic concept of blockchain and illustrating why consensus mechanism plays an indispensable role in a blockchain enabled IoT system. Then, we discuss the main ideas of two famous consensus mechanisms including Proof of Work (PoW) and Proof of Stake (PoS), and list their limitations in IoT. Next, two mainstream Direct Acyclic Graph (DAG) based consensus mechanisms, i.e., the Tangle and Hashgraph, are reviewed to show why DAG consensus is more suitable for IoT system than PoW and PoS. Potential issues and challenges of DAG based consensus mechanism to be addressed in the future are discussed in the last.

Optimal Task Assignment and Power Allocation for NOMA Mobile-Edge Computing Networks

Mobile edge computing (MEC) can enhance the computing capability of mobile devices, and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can provide high data rates. Combining these two technologies can effectively benefit the network with spectrum and energy efficiency. In this paper, we investigate the task completion time minimization in NOMA multiuser MEC networks, where multiple users can offload their tasks simultaneously via the same frequency band. We adopt the \emph{partial} offloading, in which each user can partition its computation task into offloading computing and locally computing parts. We aim to minimize the maximum task latency among users by optimizing their tasks partition ratios and offloading transmit power. By considering the energy consumption and transmitted power limitation of each user, the formulated problem is quasi-convex. Thus, a bisection search (BSS) iterative algorithm is proposed to obtain the minimum task completion time. To reduce the complexity of the BSS algorithm and evaluate its optimality, we further derive the closed-form expressions of the optimal task partition ratio and offloading power for two-user NOMA MEC networks based on the analysed results. Simulation results demonstrate the convergence and optimality of the proposed a BSS algorithm and the effectiveness of the proposed optimal derivation.

Joint Resource Block-Power Allocation for NOMA-Enabled Fog Radio Access Networks

In order to achieve efficient communication in the fifth generation (5G) networks, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique has been utilized in fog radio access networks (F-RANs). In this paper, we investigate the resource allocation problem in a NOMA-enabled downlink F-RAN. To maximize the weighted sum rate of NOMA users served by fog-computing-based access points (F-APs), the resource block (RB) allocation and power allocation are optimized. Specifically, we decouple the problem into RB allocation and power allocation problems. The former is modeled as a many-to-one matching game and we propose a modified swap-enabled matching algorithm to solve it, which takes interference threshold into consideration. The later is a non-convex problem, we transform it into a tractable one via some approximations and get the closed-form expressions of power allocation coefficients. Finally, we combine the both to propose a joint resource allocation algorithm, which is preformed iteratively to obtain the optimal result. Simulation results are provided to show the performance of the algorithm.

Hybrid Precoding-Based Millimeter-Wave Massive MIMO-NOMA with Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been recently considered in millimeter-wave (mmWave) massive MIMO systems to further enhance the spectrum efficiency. In addition, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is a promising solution to maximize the energy efficiency. In this paper, for the first time, we investigate the integration of SWIPT in mmWave massive MIMO-NOMA systems. As mmWave massive MIMO will likely use hybrid precoding (HP) to significantly reduce the number of required radio-frequency (RF) chains without an obvious performance loss, where the fully digital precoder is decomposed into a high-dimensional analog precoder and a low-dimensional digital precoder, we propose to apply SWIPT in HP-based MIMO-NOMA systems, where each user can extract both information and energy from the received RF signals by using a power splitting receiver. Specifically, the cluster-head selection (CHS) algorithm is proposed to select one user for each beam at first, and then the analog precoding is designed according to the selected cluster heads for all beams. After that, user grouping is performed based on the correlation of users' equivalent channels. Then, the digital precoding is designed by selecting users with the strongest equivalent channel gain in each beam. Finally, the achievable sum rate is maximized by jointly optimizing power allocation for mmWave massive MIMO-NOMA and power splitting factors for SWIPT, and an iterative optimization algorithm is developed to solve the non-convex problem. Simulation results show that the proposed HP-based MIMO-NOMA with SWIPT can achieve higher spectrum and energy efficiency compared with HP-based MIMO-OMA with SWIPT.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Mode Selection and Resource Management for Green Fog Radio Access Networks

Fog radio access networks (F-RANs) are seen as potential architectures to support services of internet of things by leveraging edge caching and edge computing. However, current works studying resource management in F-RANs mainly consider a static system with only one communication mode. Given network dynamics, resource diversity, and the coupling of resource management with mode selection, resource management in F-RANs becomes very challenging. Motivated by the recent development of artificial intelligence, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based joint mode selection and resource management approach is proposed. Each user equipment (UE) can operate either in cloud RAN (C-RAN) mode or in device-to-device mode, and the resource managed includes both radio resource and computing resource. The core idea is that the network controller makes intelligent decisions on UE communication modes and processors' on-off states with precoding for UEs in C-RAN mode optimized subsequently, aiming at minimizing long-term system power consumption under the dynamics of edge cache states. By simulations, the impacts of several parameters, such as learning rate and edge caching service capability, on system performance are demonstrated, and meanwhile the proposal is compared with other different schemes to show its effectiveness. Moreover, transfer learning is integrated with DRL to accelerate learning process.

Channel Matrix Sparsity with Imperfect Channel State Information in Cloud-Radio Access Networks

Channel matrix sparsification is considered as a promising approach to reduce the progressing complexity in large-scale cloud-radio access networks (C-RANs) based on ideal channel condition assumption. In this paper, the research of channel sparsification is extend to practical scenarios, in which the perfect channel state information (CSI) is not available. First, a tractable lower bound of signal-to-interferenceplus-noise ratio (SINR) fidelity, which is defined as a ratio of SINRs with and without channel sparsification, is derived to evaluate the impact of channel estimation error. Based on the theoretical results, a Dinkelbach-based algorithm is proposed to achieve the global optimal performance of channel matrix sparsification based on the criterion of distance. Finally, all these results are extended to a more challenging scenario with pilot contamination. Finally, simulation results are shown to evaluate the performance of channel matrix sparsification with imperfect CSIs and verify our analytical results.

Secrecy-Optimized Resource Allocation for Device-to-Device Communication Underlaying Heterogeneous Networks

Device-to-device (D2D) communications recently have attracted much attention for its potential capability to improve spectral efficiency underlaying the existing heterogeneous networks (HetNets). Due to no sophisticated control, D2D user equipments (DUEs) themselves cannot resist eavesdropping or security attacks. It is urgent to maximize the secure capacity for both cellular users and DUEs. This paper formulates the radio resource allocation problem to maximize the secure capacity of DUEs for the D2D communication underlaying HetNets which consist of high power nodes and low power nodes. The optimization objective function with transmit bit rate and power constraints, which is non-convex and hard to be directly derived, is firstly transformed into matrix form. Then the equivalent convex form of the optimization problem is derived according to the Perron-Frobenius theory. A heuristic iterative algorithm based on the proximal theory is proposed to solve this equivalent convex problem through evaluating the proximal operator of Lagrange function. Numerical results show that the proposed radio resource allocation solution significantly improves the secure capacity with a fast convergence speed.
