Network Slicing in Fog Radio Access Networks: Issues and Challenges

Network slicing has been advocated by both academia and industry as a cost-efficient way to enable operators to provide networks on an as-a-service basis and meet the wide range of use cases that the fifth generation wireless network will serve. The existing works on network slicing are mainly targeted at the partition of the core network, and the prospect of network slicing in radio access networks should be jointly exploited. To solve this challenge, an enhanced network slicing in fog radio access networks (F-RANs), termed as access slicing, is proposed. This article comprehensively presents a novel architecture and related key techniques for access slicing in F-RANs. The proposed hierarchical architecture of access slicing consists of centralized orchestration layer and slice instance layer, which makes the access slicing adaptively implement in an convenient way. Meanwhile, key techniques and their corresponding solutions, including the radio and cache resource management, as well as the social-aware slicing, are presented. Open issues in terms of standardization developments and field trials are identified.

Resource Allocation in Cloud Radio Access Networks with Device-to-Device Communications

To alleviate the burdens on the fronthaul and reduce the transmit latency, the device-to-device (D2D) communication is presented in cloud radio access networks (C-RANs). Considering dynamic traffic arrivals and time-varying channel conditions, the resource allocation in C-RANs with D2D is formulated into a stochastic optimization problem, which is aimed at maximizing the overall throughput subject to network stability, interference, and fronthaul capacity constraints. Leveraging on the Lyapunov optimization technique, the stochastic optimization problem is transformed into a delay-aware optimization problem, which is a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem and can be decomposed into three subproblems: mode selection, uplink beamforming design, and power control. An optimization solution that consists of a modified branch and bound method as well as a weighted minimum mean square error approach has been developed to obtain the close-to-optimal solution. Simulation results validate that the D2D can improve throughput, decrease latency, and alleviate the burdens of the constrained fronthaul in C-RANs. Furthermore, an average throughput-delay tradeoff can be achieved by the proposed solution.

A Data Mining Approach Combining K-Means Clustering with Bagging Neural Network for Short-term Wind Power Forecasting

Wind power forecasting (WPF) is significant to guide the dispatching of grid and the production planning of wind farm effectively. The intermittency and volatility of wind leading to the diversity of the training samples have a major impact on the forecasting accuracy. In this paper, to deal with the training samples dynamics and improve the forecasting accuracy, a data mining approach consisting of K-means clustering and bagging neural network is proposed for short-term WPF. Based on the similarity among historical days, K-means clustering is used to classify the samples into several categories, which contain the information of meteorological conditions and historical power data. In order to overcome the over fitting and instability problems of conventional networks, a bagging-based ensemble approach is integrated into the back propagation neural network. To confirm the effectiveness, the proposed data mining approach is examined on real wind generation data traces. The simulation results show that it can obtain better forecasting accuracy than other baseline and existed short-term WPF approaches.

An Evolutionary Game for User Access Mode Selection in Fog Radio Access Networks

The fog radio access network (F-RAN) is a promising paradigm for the fifth generation wireless communication systems to provide high spectral efficiency and energy efficiency. Characterizing users to select an appropriate communication mode among fog access point (F-AP), and device-to-device (D2D) in F-RANs is critical for performance optimization. Using evolutionary game theory, we investigate the dynamics of user access mode selection in F-RANs. Specifically, the competition among groups of potential users space is formulated as a dynamic evolutionary game, and the evolutionary equilibrium is the solution to this game. Stochastic geometry tool is used to derive the proposals' payoff expressions for both F-AP and D2D users by taking into account the different nodes locations, cache sizes as well as the delay cost. The analytical results obtained from the game model are evaluated via simulations, which show that the evolutionary game based access mode selection algorithm can reach a much higher payoff than the max rate based algorithm.

On the Spectral Efficiency and Security Enhancements of NOMA Assisted Multicast-Unicast Streaming

This paper considers the application of non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) to a multi-user network with mixed multicasting and unicasting traffic. The proposed design of beamforming and power allocation ensures that the unicasting performance is improved while maintaining the reception reliability of multicasting. Both analytical and simulation results are provided to demonstrate that the use of the NOMA assisted multicast-unicast scheme yields a significant improvement in spectral efficiency compared to orthogonal multiple access (OMA) schemes which realize multicasting and unicasting services separately. Since unicasting messages are broadcasted to all the users, how the use of NOMA can prevent those multicasting receivers intercepting the unicasting messages is also investigated, where it is shown that the secrecy unicasting rate achieved by NOMA is always larger than or equal to that of OMA. This security gain is mainly due to the fact that the multicasting messages can be used as jamming signals to prevent potential eavesdropping when the multicasting and unicasting messages are superimposed together following the NOMA principle.

The performances of the fifth generation (5G) wireless communication systems are significantly affected by edge cache and transport network. These emerging components bring substantial costs of the placement and utilization, and the evaluation of the cost impact is beyond the capability of traditional performance metrics, including spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE). In this article, economical energy efficiency (E3) is proposed, whose core idea is to take SE/EE and cost into account to evaluate comprehensive gains when different kinds of advanced technologies are used in 5G systems. The E3results are shown when the transport network and edge cache are separately or jointly used. Open issues in terms of modeling the cost, E3optimization based radio resource allocation, and E3optimization for internet of things, are identified as well.

Cluster Content Caching: An Energy-Efficient Approach to Improve Quality of Service in Cloud Radio Access Networks

In cloud radio access networks (C-RANs), a substantial amount of data must be exchanged in both backhaul and fronthaul links, which causes high power consumption and poor quality of service (QoS) experience for real-time services. To solve this problem, a cluster content caching structure is proposed in this paper, which takes full advantage of distributed caching and centralized signal processing. In particular, redundant traffic on the backhaul can be reduced because the cluster content cache provides a part of required content objects for remote radio heads (RRHs) connected to a common edge cloud. Tractable expressions for both effective capacity and energy efficiency performance are derived, which show that the proposed structure can improve QoS guarantees with a lower power cost of local storage. Furthermore, to fully explore the potential of the proposed cluster content caching structure, the joint design of resource allocation and RRH association is optimized, and two distributed algorithms are accordingly proposed. Simulation results verify the accuracy of the analytical results and show the performance gains achieved by cluster content caching in C-RANs.

Queue-Aware Energy-Efficient Joint Remote Radio Head Activation and Beamforming in Cloud Radio Access Networks

In this paper, we study the stochastic optimization of cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) by joint remote radio head (RRH) activation and beamforming in the downlink. Unlike most previous works that only consider a static optimization framework with full traffic buffers, we formulate a dynamic optimization problem by explicitly considering the effects of random traffic arrivals and time-varying channel fading. The stochastic formulation can quantify the tradeoff between power consumption and queuing delay. Leveraging on the Lyapunov optimization technique, the stochastic optimization problem can be transformed into a per-slot penalized weighted sum rate maximization problem, which is shown to be non-deterministic polynomial-time hard. Based on the equivalence between the penalized weighted sum rate maximization problem and the penalized weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) problem, the group sparse beamforming optimization based WMMSE algorithm and the relaxed integer programming based WMMSE algorithm are proposed to efficiently obtain the joint RRH activation and beamforming policy. Both algorithms can converge to a stationary solution with low-complexity and can be implemented in a parallel manner, thus they are highly scalable to large-scale C-RANs. In addition, these two proposed algorithms provide a flexible and efficient means to adjust the power-delay tradeoff on demand.

Energy-Efficient Joint Congestion Control and Resource Optimization in Heterogeneous Cloud Radio Access Networks

The heterogeneous cloud radio access network (HCRAN) is a promising paradigm which integrates the advantages of cloud radio access network (C-RAN) and heterogeneous network (HetNet). In this paper, we study the joint congestion control and resource optimization to explore the energy efficiency (EE)-guaranteed tradeoff between throughput utility and delay performance in a downlink slotted H-CRAN. We formulate the considered problem as a stochastic optimization problem, which maximizes the utility of average throughput and maintains the network stability subject to required EE constraint and transmit power consumption constraints by traffic admission control, user association, resource block allocation and power allocation. Leveraging on the Lyapunov optimization technique, the stochastic optimization problem can be transformed and decomposed into three separate subproblems which can be solved concurrently at each slot. The third mixed-integer nonconvex subproblem is efficiently solved utilizing the continuity relaxation of binary variables and the Lagrange dual decomposition method. Theoretical analysis shows that the proposal can quantitatively control the throughput-delay performance tradeoff with required EE performance. Simulation results consolidate the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the advantages of the proposal from the prospective of queue stability and power consumption.

User Access Mode Selection in Fog Computing Based Radio Access Networks

Fog computing based radio access network is a promising paradigm for the fifth generation wireless communication system to provide high spectral and energy efficiency. With the help of the new designed fog computing based access points (F-APs), the user-centric objectives can be achieved through the adaptive technique and will relieve the load of fronthaul and alleviate the burden of base band unit pool. In this paper, we derive the coverage probability and ergodic rate for both F-AP users and device-to-device users by taking into account the different nodes locations, cache sizes as well as user access modes. Particularly, the stochastic geometry tool is used to derive expressions for above performance metrics. Simulation results validate the accuracy of our analysis and we obtain interesting trade-offs that depend on the effect of the cache size, user node density, and the quality of service constrains on the different performance metrics.

Inter-tier Interference Suppression in Heterogeneous Cloud Radio Access Networks

Incorporating cloud computing into heterogeneous networks, the heterogeneous cloud radio access network (H-CRAN) has been proposed as a promising paradigm to enhance both spectral and energy efficiencies. Developing interference suppression strategies is critical for suppressing the inter-tier interference between remote radio heads (RRHs) and a macro base station (MBS) in H-CRANs. In this paper, inter-tier interference suppression techniques are considered in the contexts of collaborative processing and cooperative radio resource allocation (CRRA). In particular, interference collaboration (IC) and beamforming (BF) are proposed to suppress the inter-tier interference, and their corresponding performance is evaluated. Closed-form expressions for the overall outage probabilities, system capacities, and average bit error rates under these two schemes are derived. Furthermore, IC and BF based CRRA optimization models are presented to maximize the RRH-accessed users' sum rates via power allocation, which is solved with convex optimization. Simulation results demonstrate that the derived expressions for these performance metrics for IC and BF are accurate; and the relative performance between IC and BF schemes depends on system parameters, such as the number of antennas at the MBS, the number of RRHs, and the target signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio threshold. Furthermore, it is seen that the sum rates of IC and BF schemes increase almost linearly with the transmit power threshold under the proposed CRRA optimization solution.

Energy-Efficient Resource Allocation Optimization for Multimedia Heterogeneous Cloud Radio Access Networks

The heterogeneous cloud radio access network (H-CRAN) is a promising paradigm which incorporates the cloud computing into heterogeneous networks (HetNets), thereby taking full advantage of cloud radio access networks (C-RANs) and HetNets. Characterizing the cooperative beamforming with fronthaul capacity and queue stability constraints is critical for multimedia applications to improving energy efficiency (EE) in H-CRANs. An energy-efficient optimization objective function with individual fronthaul capacity and inter-tier interference constraints is presented in this paper for queue-aware multimedia H-CRANs. To solve this non-convex objective function, a stochastic optimization problem is reformulated by introducing the general Lyapunov optimization framework. Under the Lyapunov framework, this optimization problem is equivalent to an optimal network-wide cooperative beamformer design algorithm with instantaneous power, average power and inter-tier interference constraints, which can be regarded as the weighted sum EE maximization problem and solved by a generalized weighted minimum mean square error approach. The mathematical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that a tradeoff between EE and queuing delay can be achieved, and this tradeoff strictly depends on the fronthaul constraint.

Wireless-Powered Cooperative Communications: Power-Splitting Relaying with Energy Accumulation

A harvest-use-store power splitting (PS) relaying strategy with distributed beamforming is proposed for wirelesspowered multi-relay cooperative networks in this paper. Different from the conventional battery-free PS relaying strategy, harvested energy is prioritized to power information relaying while the remainder is accumulated and stored for future usage with the help of a battery in the proposed strategy, which supports an efficient utilization of harvested energy. However, PS affects throughput at subsequent time slots due to the battery operations including the charging and discharging. To this end, PS and battery operations are coupled with distributed beamforming. A throughput optimization problem to incorporate these coupled operations is formulated though it is intractable. To address the intractability of the optimization,a layered optimization method is proposed to achieve the optimal joint PS and battery operation design with non-causal channel state information (CSI), in which the PS and the battery operation can be analyzed in a decomposed manner. Then, a general case with causal CSI is considered, where the proposed layered optimization method is extended by utilizing the statistical properties of CSI. To reach a better tradeoff between performance and complexity, a greedy method that requires no information about subsequent time slots is proposed. Simulation results reveal the upper and lower bound on performance of the proposed strategy, which are reached by the layered optimization method with non-causal CSI and the greedy method, respectively. Moreover, the proposed strategy outperforms the conventional PS-based relaying without energy accumulation and time switching-based relaying strategy.

Cloud Radio Access Network: Virtualizing Wireless Access for Dense Heterogeneous Systems

Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) refers to the virtualization of base station functionalities by means of cloud computing. This results in a novel cellular architecture in which low-cost wireless access points, known as radio units (RUs) or remote radio heads (RRHs), are centrally managed by a reconfigurable centralized "cloud", or central, unit (CU). C-RAN allows operators to reduce the capital and operating expenses needed to deploy and maintain dense heterogeneous networks. This critical advantage, along with spectral efficiency, statistical multiplexing and load balancing gains, make C-RAN well positioned to be one of the key technologies in the development of 5G systems. In this paper, a succinct overview is presented regarding the state of the art on the research on C-RAN with emphasis on fronthaul compression, baseband processing, medium access control, resource allocation, system-level considerations and standardization efforts.

Near-Optimal Modulo-and-Forward Scheme for the Untrusted Relay Channel

This paper studies an untrusted relay channel, in which the destination sends artificial noise simultaneously with the source sending a message to the relay, in order to protect the source's confidential message. The traditional amplify-and-forward (AF) scheme shows poor performance in this situation because of the interference power dilemma: providing better security by using stronger artificial noise will decrease the confidential message power from the relay to the destination. To solve this problem, a modulo-and-forward (MF) operation at the relay with nested lattice encoding at the source is proposed. For this system with full channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT), theoretical analysis shows that the proposed MF scheme approaches the secrecy capacity within 1/2 bit for any channel realization, and hence achieves full generalized security degrees of freedom (G-SDoF). In contrast, the AF scheme can only achieve a small fraction of the G-SDoF. For this system without any CSIT, the total outage event, defined as either connection outage or secrecy outage, is introduced. Based on this total outage definition, analysis shows that the proposed MF scheme achieves the full generalized secure diversity gain (G-SDG) of order one. On the other hand, the AF scheme can only achieve a G-SDG of 1/2 at most.
