Local geometry of the Fermi surface and its effect on the electronic characteristics of normal metals

Fine features in the Fermi surface geometry, such as nearly cylindrical or nearly paraboloidal strips or local flattenings, are examined as regards their effect on the electronic, mainly galvanomagnetic, properties of metals. It is shown that under certain conditions, these features may significantly change the way a conventional normal metal or a layered structure with metallic conductivity responds to high- frequency external disturbances. All of the effects considered appear to be very sensitive to the disturbance propagation direction and/or to that of the external magnetic field. Experimental possibilities of observing the described effects are discussed.

Nanoparticle Shape Selection By Repulsive Interactions: Metal Islands on Few Layer Graphenes

Metal atoms adsorbed on few layer graphenes condense to form nanometer-size droplets whose growth is size limited by a competition between the surface tension and repulsive electrostatic interactions from charge transfer between the metal droplet and the graphene. For situations where the work function mismatch is large and the droplet surface tension is small, a growing droplet can be unstable to a family of shape instabilities. We observe this phenomenon for Yb deposited and annealed on few layer graphenes and develop a theoretical model to describe it by studying the renormalization of the line tension of a two dimensional droplet by repulsive interparticle interactions. Our model describes the onset of shape instabilities for nanoparticles where the growth is size-limited by a generic repulsive potential and provides a good account of the experimentally observed structures for Yb on graphene.

Microwave Rectification at the Boundary between Two-Dimensional Electron Systems

Rectification of microwave radiation (20-40 GHz) by a line boundary between two two-dimensional metals on a silicon surface was observed and investigated at different temperatures, in-plane magnetic fields and microwave powers. The rectified voltage $V_{dc}$ is generated whenever the electron densities $n_{1,2}$ of the two metals are different, changing polarity at $n_1 \approx n_2$. Very strong nonlinear response is found when one of the two 2D metals is close to the electron density corresponding to the reported magnetic instability in this system.
