Photoionization Modeling of Planetary Nebulae in the Galactic Bulge

In this study, we present the results of photoionization modeling for 124 planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Galactic bulge. Utilizing the {\scshape cloudy} code, we derived the effective temperatures (T$_{eff}$) of the central stars, with a peak distribution around $\sim$ 100,000 K, and luminosities clustering around $\sim$ 3,000 L$\odot$. The inner radii of the ionized regions range from 0.003 to 0.31 pc, with nebula diameters varying from 1.8" to 34", averaging 7\% larger than the observed visible diameters. Elemental abundances for Helium, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Neon, Sulphur, Chlorine and Argon relative to hydrogen derived from the models show consistency within 0.5 dex, with notable variations in Sulphur, Nitrogen, and Chlorine. The study also compares elemental abundances from photoionization models with previous observations, showing overall good agreement, particularly for Cl/H, but notable discrepancies in He/H and S/H ratios. The models' goodness of fit, quantified by $\chi^{2}$ values, varies widely, with higher values linked to discrepancies in WISE photometric data. The evolutionary tracks of the central stars from H-R diagrams suggest progenitor masses ranging from 0.8 to 4.2 $M_\odot$ and progenitor final masses between 0.53 and 0.87 $M_\odot$, indicating significant mass loss during evolution. These PNe have post-AGB ages ranging from 150 to 20,000 years, consistent with the Galactic PNe distribution. Most of the PNe are in an intermediate evolutionary stage with larger nebular sizes. Our results provide the most comprehensive photoionization modeling to date, with key implications for central stars of PNe, gas, and dust.

Analysis of Planetary Nebulae in the Milky Way: Physical Properties, Chemical Abundances, and Galactic Distributions

In this study, we investigate the physical and chemical properties of planetary nebulae (PNe) from the Milky Way Galaxy using the largest number of sources to date, with 1,449 True PNe from the HASH database. Among the Galactic components thin disk, thick disk, halo, and bulge-most PNe are concentrated in the Galactic disk, with a median angular size of 12 arcseconds (0.45 pc), while halo PNe tend to have larger sizes. Physical parameters of whole PNe, extinction coefficent c(Hbeta), electron temperature (Te), and density (Ne) show Gaussian-like distributions with medians of 1.5, 9,900 K, and 1,200 cm(-3), respectively. The abundances of He, N, O, Ne, S, Cl, and Ar in PNe show Gaussian distributions with slight variations across Galactic components. PNe located in thin disk exhibit higher abundances, except for O and Ne, while PNe in halo have the lowest values for all elements. Strong correlations between elements, particularly Sulphur vs. Nitrogen (r=0.87), were identified using statistical tests. Comparisons with previous studies reveal variations ( 2 dex.) in abundance ratios, particularly in halo PNe. We also present the first detailed database in the literature, providing 7,200 abundance values for these elements, derived from 16,500 emission line measurements, to support the testing and development of theoretical models.

Looking For Timing Variations in the Transits of 16 Exoplanets

We update the ephemerides of 16 transiting exoplanets using our ground-based observations, new TESS data, and previously published observations including those of amateur astronomers. All these light curves were modeled by making use of a set of quantitative criteria with the EXOFAST code to obtain mid-transit times. We searched for statistically significant secular and/or periodic trends in the mid-transit times. We found that the timing data are well modeled by a linear ephemeris for all systems except for XO-2 b, for which we detect an orbital decay with the rate of -12.95 $\pm$ 1.85 ms/yr that can be confirmed with future observations. We also detect a hint of potential periodic variations in the TTV data of HAT-P-13 b which also requires confirmation with further precise observations.

Homogeneous Transit Timing Analyses of Ten Exoplanet Systems

We study the transit timings of 10 exoplanets in order to investigate potential Transit Timing Variations (TTVs) in them. We model their available ground-based light curves, some presented here and others taken from the literature, and homogeneously measure the mid-transit times. We statistically compare our results with published values and find that the measurement errors agree. However, in terms of recovering the possible frequencies, homogeneous sets can be found to be more useful, of which no statistically relevant example has been found for the planets in our study. We corrected the ephemeris information of all ten planets we studied and provide these most precise light elements as references for future transit observations with space-borne and ground-based instruments. We found no evidence for secular or periodic changes in the orbital periods of the planets in our sample, including the ultra-short period WASP-103 b, whose orbit is expected to decay on an observable timescale. Therefore, we derive the lower limits for the reduced tidal quality factors (Q$^{\prime}_{\star}$) for the host stars based on best fitting quadratic functions to their timing data. We also present a global model of all available data for WASP-74 b, which has a Gaia parallax-based distance value ~25% larger than the published value.

The Transient Ultra-luminous X-ray Source, ULX-4, in M51

We present the results of a temporal and spectral analysis of the transient source ULX-4 in the galaxy M51. The data used were drawn from Chandra, XMM-Newton and Swift-XRT archives, spanning the years 2000-2019. The X-ray flux of the source is seen to vary by two orders of magnitudes within a month but a short-term variability was not observed over the time intervals of 100-2000 second in the 0.3-10 keV energy band. We find some evidence for the existence of bi-modality feature in the flux distribution of ULX-4. We identified two optical sources as possible counterparts within an error radius of 0."18 at 95% confidence level for ULX-4 based on the archival HST/ACS and HST/WFC3 data. Blackbody fits of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) indicate the spectral type to be B-type stars. One of these counterparts exhibits a low-amplitude optical periodicity of 264 days in the F606W filter; if we assume this apparent periodicity is associated with the orbital motion of the donor, then it is more likely that the donor is a red supergiant satisfying the long periodicity and accretion via Roche-lobe overflow. Consequently, the SED would then have to be interpreted as a superposition of emissions from a cold donor and a hot flow component, most likely from an accretion disk. If, on the other hand, the periodicity is super orbital in nature i.e., due to possible interactions of the compact object with a circumstellar disk, the donor could then be a Be/X star hosting a neutron star.

Global Weather for the Astronomical Observatories

Astronomical sites occupying observing instruments have to be selected according to many factors. Among these factors, geographic location of the site and quality of atmosphere above the site play an important role in the decision process. The following factors were chosen to create layers at their geographic locations (observatories: 1905 northern, 235 southern) from the \href{https://www.astrogis.org}{astroGIS database}: CC (cloud coverage), PWV (precipitable water vapor), AOD (atmospheric optical depth), VWV (vertical wind velocity) and HWV (horizontal wind velocity). In order to estimate astronomical importance of geographic location of the sites and quality of airmass above the sites, DEM (digital elevation model) and LAT (latitude of observatory location) layers were also included. Two periodic variations have been produced from these factors: monthly and annual averages. In addition to the variations or trends a complete statistical analysis was carried out for all factors to investigate the potential correlations between the factors: There is a clear difference between northern and southern hemispheres. Exchange of meteorological seasons between hemispheres are also compliant within factors. The geographical locations of most of the observatories found to be "not suitable": On the average, DEM is low (550 m), CC is high (70\%) and PWV is high (14 mm). There seems to be no apparent long-term variations and/or patterns in all factors. We once again confirm the common expectation of astronomy: \textit{as DEM increases astronomical conditions get better} (CC, PWV and AOD gets lower values). All the results will be made available online through astroGIS database.

Analysis of HAT-P-16b and TrES-3b Exoplanets by the Transit Timing Variations Method

In this study, the transit observations of HAT-P-16b and TrES-3b exoplanets were carried out at ÇÜ UZAYMER Observatory with a 50 cm Ritchey Chretien type telescope. By analyzing the light curves of both exoplanets, system parameters have been obtained with acceptable models. Some of these parameters for HAT-P-16 systems were found to be: M$_{P}$=4.172$\pm$0.163 M$_{J}$, R$_{P}$=1.309$\pm$0.111 R$_{J}$, a/R$_{*}$=7.1922$\pm$0.0017 and b=0.1003$\pm$0.1533 which are consistent with the values given in \cite{2010ApJ...720.1118B}. Also, for the TrES-3 system, the same parameters were calculated as M$_{P}$=1.959$\pm$0.111 M$_{J}$, R$_{P}$=1.320$\pm$0.169 R$_{J}$, a/R$_{*}$=6.0656$\pm$ 0.4899 and b=0.7892$\pm$0.0700. These values are also consistent with the values given in \cite{2007ApJ...663L..37O}. No significant Transit Timing Variations (TTV) was found as a result of the Lomb-Scargle (LS) periodogram for HAT-P-16b by using the transit times obtained from the transit light curves (False Alarm Probabilities -- FAP) = \%96). However, a significant periodicity was found at 32.38 days and a secondary periodicity was found at 41.07 days were determined as a result of the LS periodogram obtained from the TrES-3b data. We interpret that these periods with FAP of 3.41 \% and 1.88 \%, respectively, are close to the rotation period of the host star. Therefore, these periods could be due to the modulation of spot-induced light variations.

The First Light Curve Solutions and Period Study of BQ Ari

The first analysis of the photometric observation in BVR filters of a W UMa type binary system BQ Ari was performed. Light curve analysis was performed using Wilson-Devinney (W-D) code combined with a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation to determine its photometric and geometric elements and their uncertainties. These results show that BQ Ari is a contact binary system with a photometric mass ratio q=0.548\pm0.019, a fillout factor f=24\pm0.8 percent, and an orbital inclination of i=85.09\pm0.45. We used the parallax from Gaia EDR3 for calculating the absolute parameters of the binary system. This study suggested a new linear ephemeris for BQ Ari, combining our new mid-eclipse times and the previous observations, which we analyzed using the Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) method. We present the first analysis of the system's orbital period behavior by analyzing the O-C diagram using the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and the MCMC approaches in OCFit code. We attempted to explain the analysis of the residuals of linear fit in the O-C diagram with two approaches; "LiTE + Quadratic" and "Magnetic activity + Quadratic". Although we consider the magnetic activity to be probable, the system should be studied further in order to reveal the nature of orbital period variations.

Optical Counterparts of ULXs in Two Dwarf Galaxies: NGC 4861 and NGC 4449

We present the results of a search for optical candidates of Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in two dwarf galaxies: NGC 4861 and NGC 4449 using Hubble Space Telescope {\it HST} archival data. With a precise astrometry, we confirm that NGC 4861 X1 associated with an HII complex as reported by \cite{2014MNRAS.441.1841T} and we conclude that NGC 4861 X2 resides in a young star group with 400$\pm$80 M$\odot$. We also find that NGC 4449 X7 is associated with three optical candidates within an error radius of 0$\farcs$2 at the 90$\%$ confidence level. Absolute magnitudes (M$_{v}$) of these candidates are determined as $-$5.0 and $-$4.1. The age and mass values for the three candidates by using stellar evolutionary tracks are estimated as 40-50 Myr and $\sim$8 M$\odot$, respectively. The locations of optical candidates suggest possible association with a nearby group of stars. In addition, we analyzed the previously unused archival data of {\it XMM-Newton}, {\it Chandra} and {\it Swift} where the sources detected. Although the X-ray spectral data do not allow us to discriminate between physical models, long-term data at hand are consistent with the sources being in luminous hard states.

A Case study of light pollution in France after the change in legislation

France issued a decree to restrict and prohibit mainly outdoor lighting effective from January 1st, 2019. Effectiveness of this legislation has been evaluated in this study using GIS data which was first used in \cite{2020MNRAS.493.1204A} (so called astroGIS database - \url{astrogis.org}). A subset of Artificial Light layer of astroGIS database has been adapted for years between January 2012 and December 2019. During 2019, radiance of $1.9 \times 10^{9}$ W cm$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ has been released into space. Annual light pollution in France decreased by 6\% after the enactment of artificial light legislation. France continue to have potential Dark Sky Park locations for example cities like Indre, Lot, Nievre and Creuse having the lowest light pollution values. A strong correlation between population and light pollution ($R\simeq 0.83$) has been observed. A similar but a weak correlation can also be observed for GDP ($R\simeq 0.28$). However, it is still too early to justify whether the improvements observed in the dataset are due to the enactment of the legislation or not.

The Temporal Analysis of Light Pollution in Turkey using VIIRS data

Artificial Light pollution (AL) in Turkey and in Turkish observatories between 2012--2020 have been studied using the archival data of Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument. The astroGIS database has been used in processing the data (https://www.astrogis.org) \cite{2020MNRAS.493.1204A}. The total energy released to space from Turkey increased by 80\% in 2019 with respect to 2012. In the span of the dataset, a steady and continuous increase has been observed throughout all cities of the country. On the other hand, Dark Sky Park locations, East and Southeast Anatolian regions and mostly rural areas around the cities kept their AL level constant. Four demographic parameters have been studied and they were found to be correlated very well with AL: Population ($R \simeq 0.90$); GDP ($R \simeq 0.87$); Total Power Consumption ($R \simeq 0.66$) and Outdoor Lightening ($R \simeq 0.67$). Contrary to countries acting to prevent AL increases, Turkey seems to be at the beginning of an era where AL will arithmetically increase throughout the country and enormous amount of energy will continuously escape to space and therefore will be wasted. Therefore, a preventive legislation, especially for invaluable astronomical site locations such as TURAG, TUG, DAG and ÇAAM where each is counted as a truly dark site due to their SQM values, has to be enacted in Turkey, in very near future.

Identification of a New Ultraluminous X-ray Source in NGC 1316

In this study, we report identification of a new ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) named as X-7 in NGC 1316, with an unabsorbed luminosity of 2.1$\times$10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ using the two recent Chandra archival observations. The X-7 was detected in the Chandra 2001 observation and was included in the source list of the NGC 1316 as CXOUJ032240.8-371224 with a luminosity of 5.7$\times$10$^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Present luminosity implies a luminosity increase of a factor of $\sim$ 4. The best fit spectral model parameters indicate that X-7 has a relatively hot disk and hard spectra. If explained by a diskblackbody model, the mass of compact object is estimated as $\sim$ 8 M$\odot$ which is in the range of a stellar-mass black hole. The X-7 shows a relatively long-term count rate variability while no short-term variability is observed. We also identified a unique optical candidate within 0.22" error circle at 95\% confidence level for X-7 using the archival HST/ACS and HST/WFC3 data. Absolute magnitude (M$_{V}$) of this candidate is -7.8 mag. Its spectral energy distribution is adequately fitted a blackbody model with a temperature of 3100 K indicating an M type supergiant, assuming the donor star dominates the optical emission. In addition, we identified a transient ULX candidate (XT-1) located 6" away from X-7 has a (high) luminosity of $\sim$ 10$^{39}$ erg s$^{-1}$ with no visible optical candidate.

The ULX Source X-3 in NGC 4258: A Search for Its X-ray and Optical Properties

We present the results of a search for the nature of ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) X-3 in the nearby galaxy NGC 4258. We use archival data from {\it XMM-Newton}, {\it Chandra}, {\it NuSTAR} and {\it HST} observations. Total X-ray data analysed to find the model parameters of the system is indicative of a stellar mass black hole, $\sim$ 10 M$_{\sun}$, as the central compact object. Furthermore, analyses of the optical data from {\it HST} reveal two optical candidates with the 90 per cent confidence level of error radius of 0$\farcs$28. Assuming the optical emission is dominated by the donor star, both of these candidates are found to have spectral types that lie between B3$-$F1 with absolute magnitudes of $M_{\rm V}$ $\approx$ -6.4. Moreover, the age and mass estimates for the candidates are found to be of 10 and 18 Myr and of 13 and 20 M$_{\sun}$, respectively.

Global Site Selection for Astronomy

A global site selection for astronomy was performed with 1 km spatial resolution ($\sim$ 1 Giga pixel in size) using long term and up-to-date datasets to classify the entire terrestrial surface on the Earth. Satellite instruments are used to get the following datasets of Geographical Information System (GIS) layers: Cloud Coverage, Digital Elevation Model, Artificial Light, Precipitable Water Vapor, Aerosol Optical Depth, Wind Speed and Land Use -- Land Cover. A Multi Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) technique is applied to these datasets creating four different series where each layer will have a specific weight. We introduce for the first time a ``Suitability Index for Astronomical Sites'' namely, SIAS. This index can be used to find suitable locations and to compare different sites or observatories. Mid-western Andes in South America and Tibetan Plateau in west China were found to be the best in all SIAS Series. Considering all the series, less than 3 \% of all terrestrial surfaces are found to be the best regions to establish an astronomical observatory. In addition to this, only approximately 10 \% of all current observatories are located in good locations in all SIAS series. Amateurs, institutions or countries aiming to construct an observatory could create a short-list of potential site locations using layout of SIAS values for each country without spending time and budget. The outcomes and datasets of this study has been made available through a web site, namely ``Astro GIS Database'' on \texttt{\url{www.astrogis.org}}.

Optical Counterparts of an Ultraluminous X-Ray Source X-1 in NGC 2500

We present the results of a search for optical counterparts of ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) X-1 in the nearby galaxy NGC 2500 by using archival images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope ({\it HST}) Wide Field Camera (WFC3)/UVIS. Four optical sources have been identified as possible counterparts within the 2$σ$ error radius of 0.3 arcsec in the images. However, only two of them were investigated as candidates for counterparts due to their point-like features and their identification in various filters. These two faint candidates have absolute magnitudes of $M_{\rm V}$ $\approx$ -3.4 and -3.7. Also possible spectral classes of them were determined as B type main sequence stars. The ages and the masses of the candidates from Color Magnitude Diagram (CMD) were estimated as 45 Myr and 7 $M_{\rm \odot}$, respectively. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of two candidates were modeled by a power-law spectrum with a photon index ($α$) $\sim$1.5. The spectra with such slopes could be interpreted as an evidence of reprocessing of the X-rays in the outer part of the disk that generates optical emission.

Optical counterparts of two ULXs in NGC5474 and NGC3627 (M66)

We identified two optical counterparts of brightest ultraluminous X-ray Sources (ULXs) in galaxies NGC5474 and NGC3627 (M66). The counterparts in Hubble Space Telescope images are very faint, their V magnitudes are 24.7 ($M_V \approx -4.5$) and 25.9 ($M_V \approx -4.2$), respectively. NGC5474 X-1 changes the X-ray flux more than two orders of magnitude, in its bright state it has $L_X \approx 1.6 \times 10^{40}$ erg/s, the spectrum is best fitted by an absorbed power-law model with a photon index $Γ\approx 0.94$. M66 X-1 varies in X-rays with a factor of ~2.5, its maximal luminosity being $2.0 \times 10^{40}$ erg/s with $Γ\approx 1.7$. Optical spectroscopy of the NGC5474 X-1 has shown a blue spectrum, which however was contaminated by a nearby star of 23 mag, but the counterpart has a redder spectrum. Among other objects captured by the slit are a background emission-line galaxy (z=0.359) and a new young cluster of NGC5474. We find that these two ULXs have largest X-ray-to-optical ratios of $L_X/L_{opt}$ ~ 7000 for NGC5474 X-1 (in its bright state) and 8000 for M66 X-1 both with the faintest optical counterparts ever measured. Probably their optical emission originates from the donor star. If they have super-Eddington accretion discs with stellar-mass black holes, they may also have the lowest mass accretion rates among ULXs such as in M81 X-6 and NGC1313 X-1.

Emission-Line Fluxes of Northern Planetary Nebulae

We present long slit spectrophotometric emission line fluxes of bright and extended (<5 arcsec in diameter) Planetary Nebulae (PNe) selected from Acker et al. 1992 catalog with suitable equitorial coordinates for Northern hemisphere. In total, 17 PNe have been choosen and observed in 2008--2010. To measure absolute fluxes, broad slit sizes, ranging from 3.5\arcsec to 7.5\arcsec were used and thus equivalent widths of all observable emission line fluxes were also calculated. Among 17 PNe's observed, line flux measurements of 12 of them were made for the first time. This work also aims to extend the sky coverage of emission line flux standards in Northern hemisphere (Dopita & Hua 1997 - 52 PNe in Southern hemisphere; Wright et al. 2005 - 6 PNe in Northern hemisphere). Electron temperatures and densities, and chemical abundances of these PNe were also calculated in this work. These data is expected to lead the photometric or spectrometric further work for absolute emission line flux measurements needed for \hii regions, supernova remnants etc.

A Pipeline for the ROTSE-IIId Archival Data

We have constructed a new, fast, robust and reliable pipeline to detect variable stars from the ROTSE-IIId archival data. Turkish share of ROTSE-III archive contains approximately one million objects from a large field of view (1.85\dgr) and it considerably covers a large portion of northern sky ($δ>-25\dgr$). The unfiltered ROTSE-III magnitude of the objects ranges from 7.7 to 16.9. The main stages of the new pipeline are as follows: Source extraction, astrometry of the objects, light curve generation and inhomogeneous ensemble photometry. A high performance computing (HPC) algorithm has also been implemented into the pipeline where we had a good performance even on a personal computer. Running the algorithms of the pipeline on a cluster decreases analysis time significantly from weeks to hours. The pipeline is especially tested against long period variable stars with periods of a few hundred days (e.g Mira and SR) and variables having periods starting from a few days to a few hundred days were detected.
