Hot subdwarfs from the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey: II. Atmospheric parameters of subdwarf O stars

We address the origin and evolutionary status of hot subdwarf stars by studying the optical spectral properties of 58 subdwarf O (sdO) stars. Combining them with the results of our previously studied subdwarf B (sdB) stars, we aim at investigating possible evolutionary links. We analyze high-resolution ESO VLT UVES spectra from the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY). Effective temperatures, gravities, and helium abundances are determined simultaneously by fitting the profiles of H and He lines using dedicated synthetic spectra in NLTE. Evidence for cool companions to 8 sdOs as well as a binary consisting of two sdO stars is found. A correlation between He abundances and the presence of carbon and/or nitrogen lines emerges: below solar He abundance, no sdO shows C or N lines. In contrast, C and/or N lines are present in ALL sdOs with super- solar He abundance. We thus use the solar He abundance to divide our sample into He-deficient and He-enriched sdOs. While He-deficient sdOs are scattered in a wide range of the Teff-log(g)-diagram, most of the He-enriched sdOs cluster in a narrow region at Teff = 40,000 ... 50,000K and log(g)=5.5 ... 6.0. An evolu- tionary link between sdBs and sdOs appears plausible only for the He-deficient sdOs indicating that they are the likely successors to sdBs. The properties of He-enriched sdOs cannot be explained with canonical single star evolutionary models. Alternative scenarios (late hot flasher) as well as for binary evolution (white dwarf merger; post-RGB evolution) are tested. While we regard the post-RGB scenario as inappropriate, the white dwarf merger and the late hot flasher scenarios remain viable to explain the origin of He-enriched sdOs.

Bright Metal-Poor Stars from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. I. Selection and Follow-up Observations from 329 Fields

We present a sample of 1777 bright (9 1.0) metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-2.0) giants of 9% +- 2%, which is lower than previously reported. However, the frequency raises to similar (>20%) and higher values with increasing distance from the Galactic plane. Although the numbers of stars at low metallicity are falling rapidly at the lowest metallicities, there is evidence that the fraction of carbon-enhanced metal-poor stars is increasing rapidly as a function of declining metallicity. For ~60 objects, high-resolution data have already been obtained; one of these, HE 1327-2326, is the new record holder for the most iron-deficient star known.

The Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES) III. HE 0338-3945 and the formation of the r+s stars

We have derived abundances of 33 elements and upper limits for 6 additional elements for the metal-poor ([Fe/H] = -2.42) turn-off star HE 0338-3945 from high-quality VLT-UVES spectra. The star is heavily enriched, by about a factor of 100 relative to iron and the Sun, in the heavy s-elements (Ba, La, ..). It is also heavily enriched in Eu, which is generally considered an r-element, and in other similar elements. It is less enriched, by about a factor of 10, in the lighter s-elements (Sr, Y and Zr). C is also strongly enhanced and, to a somewhat lesser degree, N and O. These abundance estimates are subject to severe uncertainties due to NLTE and thermal inhomogeneities which are not taken into detailed consideration. However, an interesting result, which is most probably robust in spite of these uncertainties, emerges: the abundances derived for this star are very similar to those of other stars with an overall enhancement of all elements beyond the iron peak. We have defined criteria for this class of stars, r+s stars, and discuss nine different scenarios to explain their origin. None of these explanations is found to be entirely convincing. The most plausible hypotheses involve a binary system in which the primary component goes through its giant branch and asymptotic giant branch phases and produces CNO and s-elements which are dumped onto the observed star. Whether the r-element Eu is produced by supernovae before the star was formed (perhaps triggering the formation of a low-mass binary), by a companion as it explodes as a supernova (possibly triggered by mass transfer), or whether it is possibly produced in a high-neutron-density version of the s-process is still unclear. Several suggestions are made on how to clarify this situation.

The Galactic Nature of High Velocity Cloud Complex WB

We have detected absorption lines from the High Velocity Cloud Complex WB in the spectrum of the star HE1048+0231. This detection sets an upper distance limit to the cloud of 8.8^{+2.3}_{-1.3} kpc. Non-detection (at >4 sigma confidence) in the star HE1138-1303 at 7.7 +/- 0.2 kpc sets a probable lower limit. The equivalent width of the CaII K line due to the HVC (114.6 +/- 4.4 mA) corresponds to a column density of 1.32 +/- 0.05 x 10^12 cm^-2. Using an HI spectrum from the Leiden/Argentine/Bonn survey, we calculated N(CaII)/N(HI) = 81 +/- 16 x 10^-9. These distance limits imply an HI mass limit of 3.8 x 10^5 Msun < M_HI < 4.9 x 10^5 Msun. The upper distance limit imposed by these observations shows that this HVC complex has a probable Galactic or circum-Galactic origin. Future metallicity measurements will be able to confirm or refute this interpretation.

The new record holder for the most iron-poor star: HE 1327-2326, a dwarf or subgiant with [Fe/H]=-5.4

We describe the discovery of HE 1327-2326, a dwarf or subgiant with [Fe/H]}=-5.4. The star was found in a sample of bright metal-poor stars selected from the Hamburg/ESO survey. Its abundance pattern is characterized by very high C and N abundances. The detection of Sr which is overabundant by a factor of 10 as compared to iron and the Sun, suggests that neutron-capture elements had already been produced in the very early Galaxy. A puzzling Li depletion is observed in this unevolved star which contradicts the value of the primordial Li derived from WMAP and other Li studies. Possible scenarios for the origin of the abundance pattern (Pop. II or Pop. III) are presented as well as an outlook on future observations.

The Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES) II. Spectroscopic analysis of the survey sample

We present the results of analysis of ``snapshot'' spectra of 253 metal-poor halo stars -3.8 < [Fe/H] < -1.5 obtained in the HERES survey. The spectra are analysed using an automated line profile analysis method based on the Spectroscopy Made Easy codes of Valenti & Piskunov. Elemental abundances of moderate precision have been obtained for 22 elements, C, Mg, Al, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn, Sr, Y, Zr, Ba, La, Ce, Nd, Sm, and Eu, where detectable. Among the sample of 253 stars, we find 8 r-II stars and 35 r-I stars. We also find three stars with strong enhancements of Eu which are s-process rich. A significant number of new very metal-poor stars are confirmed: 49 stars with [Fe/H] < -3 and 181 stars with -3 < [Fe/H] < -2. We find one star with [Fe/H] < -3.5. We find the scatter in the abundance ratios of Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Fe, Co, and Ni, with respect to Fe and Mg, to be similar to the estimated relative errors and thus the cosmic scatter to be small, perhaps even non-existent. The elements C, Sr, Y, Ba and Eu, and perhaps Zr, show scatter at [Fe/H] < -2.5 significantly larger than can be explained from the errors in the analysis, implying scatter which is cosmic in origin. Significant scatter is observed in abundance ratios between light and heavy neutron-capture elements at low metallicity and low levels of r-process enrichment. (*** abridged ***)

Binaries discovered by the SPY project. IV. Five single-lined DA double white dwarfs

We present results from our ongoing follow-up observations of double white dwarf binaries detected in the ESO SN Ia Progenitor SurveY (SPY). We discuss our observing strategy and data analysis and present the orbital solutions of five close double white dwarf binaries: HE0320-1917, HE1511-0448, WD0326-273, WD1013-010 and WD1210+140. Their periods range from 0.44 to 3.22 days. In none of these systems we find any spectral lines originating from the companion. This rules out main sequence companions and indicates that the companion white dwarfs are significantly older and cooler than the bright component. Infrared photometry suggests the presence of a cool, helium-rich white dwarf companion in the binary WD0326-273. We briefly discuss the consequences of our findings for our understanding of the formation and evolution of double white dwarfs.

The stellar content of the Hamburg/ESO survey. III. Field horizontal-branch stars in the Galaxy

We present a sample of 8321 candidate Field Horizontal-Branch (FHB) stars selected by automatic spectral classification in the digital data base of the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey. The stars are distributed over 8225 square degrees of the southern sky, at |b| > 30 deg. The average distance of the sample, assuming that they are all FHB stars, is 9.8 kpc, and distances of up to ~30 kpc are reached. Moderate-resolution spectroscopic follow-up observations and UBV photometry of 125 test sample stars demonstrate that the contamination of the full candidate sample with main-sequence A-type stars is < 16%, while it would be up to 50% in a flux-limited sample at high galactic latitudes. Hence more than ~6800 of our FHB candidates are expected to be genuine FHB stars. The candidates are being used as distance probes for high-velocity clouds and for studies of the structure and kinematics of the Galactic halo.

Identification of a DO White Dwarf and a PG1159 Star in the ESO SN Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY)

We present high-resolution VLT spectra of a new DO white dwarf and a new PG1159 star, which we identified in the ESO SPY survey. The PG1159 star is a low-gravity, extremely hot (Teff=160,000 K, log g=6) star, having a C/He dominated atmosphere with considerable amounts of O and Ne (He=38%, C=54%, O=6%, Ne=2% by mass). It is located within the planetary nebula nuclei instability strip and pulsations have been discovered. The DO is a unique object. From HeI/HeII line strengths we found Teff about 60,000 K, however, the HeII lines are extraordinarily strong and cannot be fitted by any model.

Hot subdwarfs from the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey - I. Atmospheric parameters and cool companions of sdB stars

We present the analysis of a high-resolution, high-quality sample of optical spectra for 76 subdwarf B (sdB) stars from the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey (SPY). Effective temperature, surface gravity, and photospheric helium abundance are determined simultaneously by fitting the profiles of hydrogen and helium lines using synthetic spectra calculated from LTE and NLTE model atmospheres. We perform a detailed comparison of our measurements with theoretical calculations, both for single star evolution and for binary population synthesis models of close binary evolution. The luminosity evolution given by the standard EHB evolutionary tracks from Dorman et al. (1993) shows an overall agreement in shape with our observations, although a constant offset in luminosity exists. The various simulation sets for binary formation channels of sdB stars calculated by Han et al. (2003) are compared individually to our data for testing our current understanding of sdB formation processes and the physical effects involved. The best-matching sets manage to reproduce the observed sdB distribution in the temperature-gravity-plane well. However, they do not match the observed cumulative luminosity function, indicating that theoretical improvement is necessary. We also investigate composite-spectrum objects showing clear signatures of a cool companion with optical and infrared photometry. These stars have cool main sequence companions of spectral types F to K. Typical helium abundances of composite and non-composite sdB stars do not differ.

The Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES). I. Project description, and discovery of two stars with strong enhancements of neutron-capture elements

We report on a dedicated effort to identify and study metal-poor stars strongly enhanced in r-process elements ([r/Fe] > 1 dex; hereafter r-II stars), the Hamburg/ESO R-process Enhanced Star survey (HERES). Moderate-resolution (~2A) follow-up spectroscopy has been obtained for metal-poor giant candidates selected from the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES) as well as the HK survey to identify sharp-lined stars with [Fe/H] < -2.5dex. For several hundred confirmed metal-poor giants brighter than B~16.5mag (most of them from the HES), ``snapshot'' spectra (R~20,000; S/N~30 per pixel) are being obtained with VLT/UVES, with the main aim of finding the 2-3% r-II stars expected to be among them. These are studied in detail by means of higher resolution and higher S/N spectra. In this paper we describe a pilot study based on a set of 35 stars, including 23 from the HK survey, 8 from the HES, and 4 comparison stars. We discovered two new r-II stars, CS29497-004 ([Eu/Fe] = 1.64 +/- 0.22) and CS29491-069 ([Eu/Fe] = 1.08 +/- 0.23). A first abundance analysis of CS29497-004 yields that its abundances of Ba to Dy are on average enhanced by 1.5dex with respect to iron and the Sun and match a scaled solar r-process pattern well, while Th is underabundant relative to that pattern by 0.3dex, which we attribute to radioactive decay. That is, CS29497-004 seems not to belong to the class of r-process enhanced stars displaying an ``actinide boost'', like CS31082-001 (Hill et al. 2002), or CS30306-132 (Honda et al. 2004b). The abundance pattern agrees well with predictions of the phenomenological model of Qian & Wasserburg.

Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor Stars in the Early Galaxy

Very metal-deficient stars that exhibit enhancements of their carbon abundances are of crucial importance for understanding a number of issues -- the nature of stellar evolution among the first generations of stars, the shape of the Initial Mass Function, and the relationship between carbon enhancement and neutron-capture processes, in particular the astrophysical s-process. One recent discovery from objective-prism surveys dedicated to the discovery of metal-deficient stars is that the frequency of Carbon-Enhanced Metal-Poor (CEMP) stars increases with declining metallicity, reaching roughly 25% for [Fe/H] < -2.5. In order to explore this phenomenon in greater detail we have obtained medium-resolution (2 A) spectroscopy for about 350 of the 413 objects in the Christlieb et al. catalog of carbon-rich stars, selected from the Hamburg/ESO objective prism survey on the basis of their carbon-enhancement, rather than metal deficiency. Based on these spectra, and near-IR JHK photometry from the 2MASS Point Source Catalog, we obtain estimates of [Fe/H] and [C/Fe] for most of the stars in this sample, along with reasonably accurate determinations of their radial velocities. Of particular importance, we find that the upper envelope of carbon enhancement observed for these stars is nearly constant, at [C/H] ~ -1.0, over the metallicity range -4.0 < [Fe/H] < -2.0; this same level of [C/H] applies to the most iron-deficent star yet discovered, HE 0107-5240, at [Fe/H] = -5.3.

Efficient Searches for r-Process-Enhanced, Metal-Poor Stars

Neutron-capture-enhanced, metal-poor stars are of central importance to developing an understanding of the operation of the r-process in the early Galaxy, thought to be responsible for the formation of roughly half of all elements beyond the iron peak. A handful of neutron-capture-rich, metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] < -2.0 have already been identified, including the well known r-process-enhanced stars CS 22892-052 and CS 31082-001. However, many questions of fundamental interest can only be addressed with the assemblage of a much larger sample of such stars, so that general properties can be distinguished. We describe a new effort, HERES: The Hamburg/ESO R-Process-Enhanced Star survey, nearing completion, which will identify on the order of 5-10 additional highly r-process-enhanced, metal-poor stars, and in all likelihood, a similar or greater number of mildly r-process-enhanced, metal-poor stars in the halo of the Galaxy. HERES is based on rapid "snapshot" spectra of over 350 candidate halo giants with [Fe/H] < -2.0, obtained at moderately high resolution, and with moderate signal-to-noise ratios, using the UVES spectrograph on the European VLT 8m telescope.

Identification of a DO white dwarf and a PG1159 star in the ESO SN Ia progenitor survey (SPY)

We present high-resolution VLT spectra of a new helium-rich DO white dwarf and a new PG1159 star, which we identified in the ESO SPY survey. We performed NLTE model atmosphere analyses and found that the PG1159 star is a low-gravity, extremely hot (Teff=160,000K, logg=6) star, having a carbon-helium dominated atmosphere with considerable amounts of oxygen and neon (He=38%, C=54%, O=6%, Ne=2% by mass). It is located within the planetary nebula nuclei instability strip, hence, future searches for an associated PN as well as for stellar pulsations might be successful. The DO white dwarf is a unique object. From the relative strength of neutral and ionized helium lines we found Teff approx. 60,000K, however, the HeII lines are extraordinarily strong and cannot be fitted by any model. Similar problems were encountered with hot subdwarfs and white dwarfs showing signatures of a super-hot wind. The reason is unknown.

Double degenerates and progenitors of supernovae type Ia

We report on systematic radial velocity surveys for white dwarf - white dwarf binaries (double degenerates - DDs) including SPY (ESO Supernovae Ia progenitor survey) recently carried out at the VLT. A large sample of DD will allow us to put strong constrains on the phases of close binary evolution of the progenitor systems and to perform an observational test of the DD scenario for supernovae of type Ia. We explain how parameters of the binaries can be derived from various methods. Results for a sample of DDs are presented and discussed.

On the oxygen abundance of HE0107-5240

We have determined the oxygen abundance of HE0107-5240 from UV-OH lines detected in VLT/UVES spectra. Using a plane-parallel LTE model atmosphere, we derive [O/Fe] = +2.4, and a similar analysis of CD -38 245 yields [O/Fe] = +1.0. We estimate systematic errors due to 3D effects to be in the order of 0.3 to 0.4 dex. That is, our derived O abundances are likely overestimates: effects from thermal inhomogeneities due to convection may require that the abundances should be reduced by 0.3-0.4 dex or even more. Radial velocity data for HE0107-5240 based on high-resolution spectra show that over a time span of 373 days the radial velocity was constant at 44.5 km/s, with a 1 sigma scatter of the measurements of 0.5 km/s. However, it can not yet be ruled out that HE0107-5240 is a very long period and/or low amplitude binary. These results provide new constraints on scenarios for the origin of the abundance pattern of HE0107-5240. In particular, it seems unlikely that the large overabundances of CNO have been produced in a medium-mass AGB star which later evolved to a white dwarf. The oxygen abundance of HE0107-5240 is significantly smaller than the prediction of Umeda & Nomoto (2003) from calculated yields of a ~25 solar mass Population III star exploding as a supernova of low explosion energy (E_exp = 3 x 10^50 erg) with mixing and fallback. The scenario of Limongi et al. (2003), involving two Population III supernovae, predicts an oxygen abundance of [O/Fe] = +4.1 for HE0107-5240, in strong contradiction with the observed value. In conclusion, none of the above mentioned scenarios, in their present realizations, can satisfactorly explain the abundance pattern of HE0107-5240.

Close binary EHB stars from SPY

We present the results of a radial velocity (RV) survey of 46 subdwarf B (sdB) and 23 helium-rich subdwarf O (He-sdO) stars. We detected 18 (39%) new sdB binary systems, but only one (4%) He-sdO binary. Orbital parameters of nine sdB and sdO binaries, derived from follow-up spectroscopy, are presented. Our results are compared with evolutionary scenarios and previous observational investigations.
