HE0107-5240, A Chemically Ancient Star.I. A Detailed Abundance Analysis

We report a detailed abundance analysis for HE0107-5240, a halo giant with [Fe/H]_NLTE=-5.3. This star was discovered in the course of follow-up medium-resolution spectroscopy of extremely metal-poor candidates selected from the digitized Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey. On the basis of high-resolution VLT/UVES spectra, we derive abundances for 8 elements (C, N, Na, Mg, Ca, Ti, Fe, and Ni), and upper limits for another 12 elements. A plane-parallel LTE model atmosphere has been specifically tailored for the chemical composition of {\he}. Scenarios for the origin of the abundance pattern observed in the star are discussed. We argue that HE0107-5240 is most likely not a post-AGB star, and that the extremely low abundances of the iron-peak, and other elements, are not due to selective dust depletion. The abundance pattern of HE0107-5240 can be explained by pre-enrichment from a zero-metallicity type-II supernova of 20-25M_Sun, plus either self-enrichment with C and N, or production of these elements in the AGB phase of a formerly more massive companion, which is now a white dwarf. However, significant radial velocity variations have not been detected within the 52 days covered by our moderate-and high-resolution spectra. Alternatively, the abundance pattern can be explained by enrichment of the gas cloud from which HE0107-5240 formed by a 25M_Sun first-generation star exploding as a subluminous SNII, as proposed by Umeda & Nomoto (2003). We discuss consequences of the existence of HE0107-5240 for low-mass star formation in extremely metal-poor environments, and for currently ongoing and future searches for the most metal-poor stars in the Galaxy.

Spectroscopic analysis of sdB stars from the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey

We report on the analysis of high-resolution optical spectra for 77 subdwarf B (sdB) stars from the ESO Supernova Ia Progenitor Survey. Effective temperature, surface gravity, and photospheric helium abundance are determined simultaneously by spectral line profile fitting of hydrogen and helium lines, and are found to be in agreement with previous studies of sdB stars. 24 objects show spectral signs of a cool companion, being either companion absorption lines or a flux contribution at Halpha. Five stars with relatively high luminosity show peculiar Halpha profiles, possibly indicating stellar winds. Our results are compared to recent theoretical simulations by Han et al. (2003) for the distribution in effective temperature and surface gravity, and are found to agree very well with these calculations. Finally we present a binary system consisting of two helium-rich hot subdwarfs.

Binaries discovered by the SPY project. III. HE2209-1444: a massive, short period double degenerate

In the course of our search for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY - SPY) we discovered HE2209-1444 to be a double-lined system consisting of two DA white dwarfs. From the analysis of the radial velocity curve we determined the period of the system to be P = 6h 38m 47s. The semi-amplitudes for both individual components are 109 km/s each. A model atmosphere analysis enabled us to derive individual temperatures for both components (8490 K and 7140 K, resp.) and masses of 0.58 Msol for each component. The total mass of the system is 1.15 +/- 0.07 Msol. The system will loose angular momentum due to gravitational wave radiation and therefore will merge within 5 Gyrs -- less than a Hubble time. HE2209-1444 is the second massive, short period double degenerate detected by SPY. Its total mass is about 20 % below the Chandrasekhar mass limit and therefore it does not qualify as a potentional SN Ia progenitor. However, together with our previous detections it supports the view that Chandrasekhar mass systems do exist.

Search for double degenerate progenitors of supernovae type Ia with SPY

We report on a large survey for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT (SN Ia Progenitor surveY - SPY). About 560 white dwarfs were checked for radial velocity variations until now. Ninety new DDs have been discovered, including short period systems with masses close to the Chandrasekhar mass.

Search for progenitors of supnernovae type Ia with SPY

We have started a large survey for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY - SPY). About 400 white dwarfs were checked for radial velocity variations during the first 15 months of this project, twice the number of white dwarfs investigated during the last 20 years. We give an overview of the SPY project and present first results Fifty four new DDs have been discovered, seven of them double lined (only 18 and 6 objects of these groups were known before, respectively). The final sample is expected to contain 150 to 200 DDs. Eight new pre-cataclysmic binaries were also detected. SPY is the first DD survey which encompasses also non-DA white dwarfs. SPY produces an immense, unique sample of very high resolution white dwarf spectra, which provides a lot of spin-off opportunities. We describe our projects to exploit the SPY sample for the determination of basic parameters, kinematics, and rotational velocities of white dwarfs. A catalogue with a first subset of our white dwarf data has already been published by Koester et al. 2001.

Binaries discovered by the SPY project. II. HE 1414-0848: a double degenerate with a mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit

In the course of our search for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY - SPY) we discovered that the white dwarf HE 1414-0848 is a double-lined DA+DA binary with an orbital period of P = 12h 25m 39s. Semi-amplitudes of 128km/s and 100km/s are derived for the individual components. The amplitude ratio and the measured difference in gravitational redshift is used to estimate the masses of the individual components: 0.55Msol and 0.71Msol. Hence the total mass of the HE 1414-0848 system is 1.26Msol, only 10% below the Chandrasekhar limit. The results of a model atmosphere analysis are consistent with our mass estimated from the orbit. Temperatures of the individual components are also determined. Possible scenarios for the formation of this system are discussed. The system will merge due to loss of angular momentum via gravitational wave radiation after two Hubble times. HE 1414-0848 does not qualify as a SN Ia progenitor, but it is the most massive close DD known today.

Binaries discovered by the SPY project I. HE 1047-0436: a subdwarf B + white dwarf system

In the course of our search for double degenerate binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY - SPY) we discovered that the sdB star HE 1047-0436 is radial velocity variable. The orbital period of 1.213253d, a semi-amplitude of 94km/s, and a minimum mass of the invisible companion of 0.44Msol are derived from the analysis of the radial velocity curve. We use an upper limit on the projected rotational velocity of the sdB star to constrain the system inclination and the companion mass to M>0.71Msol, bringing the total mass of the system closer to the Chandrasekhar limit. However, the system will merge due to loss of angular momentum via gravitational wave radiation only after several Hubble times. Atmospheric parameters and metal abundances are also derived. The resulting values are typical for sdB stars.

The stellar content of the Hamburg/ESO survey. II. A large, homogeneously-selected sample of high latitude carbon stars

We present a sample of 403 faint high latitude carbon (FHLC) stars selected from the digitized objective prism plates of the Hamburg/ESO Survey (HES). Because of the ~15 Angstroem spectral resolution and high signal-to-noise ratio of the HES prism spectra, our automated procedure based on the detection of C_2 and CN molecular bands permits high-confidence identification of carbon stars without the need for follow-up spectroscopy. From a set of 329 plates (87% of the survey), covering 6400 square degrees to a magnitude limit of V~16.5, we analyze the selection efficiency and effective surface area of the HES FHLC survey to date. The surface density of FHLC stars that we detect (0.072 +/- 0.005 square degrees) is 2-4 times higher than that of previous objective prism and CCD surveys at high galactic latitude, even though those surveys claimed a limiting magnitude up to 1.5 magnitudes fainter. This attests to the highest selection sensitivity yet achieved for these types of stars.

The stellar content of the Hamburg/ESO survey. I. Automated selection of DA white dwarfs

We describe automatic procedures for the selection of DA white dwarfs in the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES). For this purpose, and the selection of other stellar objects (e.g., metal-poor stars and carbon stars), a flexible, robust algorithm for detection of stellar absorption and emission lines in the digital spectra of the HES was developed. Broad band (U-B, B-V) and narrow band (Strömgren c_1) colours can be derived directly from HES spectra, with precisions of sigma(U-B)=0.092mag; sigma(B-V)=0.095mag; sigma(c_1)=0.15mag. We describe simulation techniques that allow to convert model or slit spectra to HES spectra. These simulated objective-prism spectra are used to determine quantitative selection criteria, and for the study of selection functions. We present an atlas of simulated HES spectra of DA and DB white dwarfs. Our current selection algorithm is tuned to yield maximum efficiency of the candidate sample (minimum contamination with non-DAs). DA candidates are selected in the B-V versus U-B and c_1 versus W_λ(Hbeta+Hgamma+Hdelta) parameter spaces. The contamination of the resulting sample with hot subdwarfs is expected to be as low as ~8%, while there is essentially no contamination with main sequence or horizontal branch stars. We estimate that with the present set of criteria, ~80% of DAs present in the HES database are recovered. A yet higher degree of internal completeness could be reached at the expense of higher contamination. However, the external completeness is limited by additional losses caused by proper motion effects and the epoch differences between direct and spectral plates used in the HES.

Cool helium-rich white dwarfs from the Hamburg/ESO Survey

We present an analysis of 40 cool helium-rich white dwarfs found in the Hamburg/ESO survey. They were selected for follow-up spectroscopy because of their U-B colour below -0.18, the absence of strong absorption lines, and a continuum shape similar to that of a quasar. Effective temperatures for individual stars were determined by fitting model atmospheres of nearly pure helium with a small admixture of hydrogen. As a consequence of the selection criteria all but one sample stars have Teff below 20000 K. Four stars clearly show helium and hydrogen lines in their spectra. In the spectra of another three, helium, hydrogen, and metal lines can be detected. For these stars hydrogen and metal abundances were also determined by fitting appropriate model atmospheres containing these elements. Seven sample stars most likely have helium-rich atmospheres but do not show any helium lines. They either have featureless spectra or show calcium lines.

Abundance analysis of two extremely metal-poor stars from the Hamburg/ESO Survey

We report on the first high spectral resolution analysis of extremely metal-poor halo stars from the Hamburg/ESO objective-prism survey (HES). The spectra were obtained with UVES at VLT-UT2. The two stars under investigation (\object {HE 1303--2708} and \object {HE 1353--2735}) are main-sequence turnoff-stars having metal abundances of [Fe/H]=-2.85 and -3.20, respectively. The stellar parameters derived from the UVES spectra are in very good agreement with those derived from moderate-resolution follow-up spectra. HE 1353--2735 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary. The two stars nicely reproduce the strong scatter in [Sr/Fe] observed for extremely metal-poor stars. While we see a strong Sr II $λ4215$ Å line in the spectrum of HE 1303--2708 ([Sr/Fe]=-0.08), we can only give an upper limit for HE 1353--2735 ([Sr/Fe]<-1.2), since the line is not detected. We report abundances of Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr for both stars, and Co, Y for respect to known trends for metal-poor stars.Lithium is also detected in these stars, to a level which places them among Lithium-plateau metal-poor dwarfs.

The Hamburg/ESO survey for bright QSOs. III. A large flux-limited sample of QSOs

We present a new sample of 415 bright QSOs and Seyfert~1 nuclei drawn from the Hamburg/ESO survey (HES). The sample is spectroscopically 99 % complete and well-defined in terms of flux and redshift limits. Optical magnitudes are in the interval 13 < B_J < 17.5, redshifts range within 0< z < 3.2. More than 50 % of the objects in the sample are new discoveries. We describe the selection techniques and discuss sample completeness and potential selection effects. There is no evidence for redshift-dependent variations of completeness; in particular, low-redshift QSOs - notoriously missed by other optical surveys - are abundant in this sample, since no discrimination against extended sources is imposed. For the same reason, the HES is not biased against multiply imaged QSOs due to gravitational lensing. The sample forms the largest homogeneous set of bright QSOs currently in existence, useful for a variety of statistical studies. We have redetermined the bright part of the optical quasar number-magnitude relation. We confirm that the Palomar-Green survey is significantly incomplete, but that its degree of incompleteness has recently been overestimated.

Finding the First Stars: The Hamburg/ESO Objective Prism Survey

We report on a search for extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-3.0) turnoff stars in the Hamburg/ESO objective prism survey (HES). Metal-poor stars are selected by automatic spectral classification. Extensive simulations show that the selection efficiency for turnoff stars of [Fe/H]<-3.0 is >25% at B<16.5. Since the HES is more than 1 mag deeper than the HK survey of Beers et al. (1992), the HES offers the possibility to efficiently increase the total number of metal-poor stars by at least a factor of 4.

The new complex gravitational lens system HE 0230-2130

We report the discovery of the new gravitational lens system HE~0230$-$2130, a QSO at redshift $z=2.162$ consisting of at least five distinct components. Three of these are clearly lensed images of the QSO, one is most likely the lensing galaxy, while for the fifth component the identity is unclear: It could be a fourth QSO image (if so, then highly reddened), or another intervening galaxy, or a superposition of the two. Differential reddening seems to be important also for the first three QSO images. The surface density of faint galaxies near the QSO appears to be enhanced by a factor of $\ga 2$, indicating the presence of a distant cluster close to the line of sight.

Four magnetic DB white dwarfs discovered by the Hamburg/ESO survey

We report on seven peculiar faint blue stars found in the course of the Hamburg/ESO survey (HES) which appear to be magnetic white dwarfs (WDs) with non-hydrogen spectra. We show in particular that four of them (HE 0338-3853, HE 0107-0158, HE 0026-2150, and HE 0003-5701) have He I lines split by magnetic fields of roughly 20MG, since the πcomponents of He I 5876 Angstroem and He I 4929 Angstroem can be identified unambiguously in their spectra, and the $σ^+$, $σ^-$ components can be identified in the spectra of two of these stars (HE 0338-3853 and HE 0003-5701). Besides GD 229, these are the first magnetic DB white dwarfs discovered so far. In addition, three further WDs with broad, unidentifiable features have been found: HE 1043-0502, HE 0236-2656, and HE 0330-0002. We argue that in all three of these stars H I can not be responsible for the broad features, and He I most probably not for the features in HE 0236-2656 and HE 0330-0002, while it still remains possible that the broad features of HE 1043-0502 are due to He I.
