Time operator from parametrization invariance and implications for cosmology

Motivated by the parametrization invariance of cosmological Lagrangians and their equivalence to systems describing the motion of particles in curved backgrounds, we identify the phase space analogue of the notion of proper time. We define the corresponding quantum operator, which results in being canonically conjugate to that of the vanishing Hamiltonian. In the context of particle dynamics, this leads to an uncertainty relation of the form $\Delta E_0 \,\Delta T \geq \hbar$, where $E_0$ is the rest energy of the particle. By studying the non-relativistic limit, we show that the action of the operator reduces to multiplication by the classical time coordinate. Finally, we derive the generic expression for the introduced time variable in the cosmological setting.

Kantowski-Sachs and Bianchi III dynamics in $f\left(Q\right)$-gravity

We explore the phase-space of homogeneous and anisotropic spacetimes within symmetric teleparallel $f(Q)$-gravity. Specifically, we consider the Kantowski-Sachs and locally rotational Bianchi III geometries to describe the physical space. By analyzing the phase-space, we reconstruct the cosmological history dictated by $f(Q)$-gravity and comment about the theory's viability. Our findings suggest that the free parameters of the connection must be constrained to eliminate nonlinear terms in the field equations. Consequently, new stationary points emerge, rendering the theory cosmologically viable. We identify the existence of anisotropic accelerated universes, which may correspond to the pre-inflationary epoch.

Minisuperspace description of $f(Q)$-cosmology

We investigate the existence of minisuperspace description for the homogeneous cosmological field equations within the framework of symmetric teleparallel $f(Q)$-gravity. We consider the background space to be described by the isotropic Friedmann--Lema\^{\i}tre--Robertson--Walker geometry, the anisotropic Kantowski-Sachs and the anisotropic Bianchi III geometries. Across all these models, we establish that the field equations in $f(Q)$-cosmology exhibit second-order characteristics in the coincident gauge and those of a sixth-order theory in the non-coincident gauge. Specifically, within the latter scenario, the dynamic degrees of freedom are attributed to two scalar fields. Finally, as an example of integrability, we derive a vacuum cosmological solution within the non-coincident gauge.

Exploring Quantum Cosmology within the Framework of Teleparallel $f(T)$-gravity

We investigate quantum cosmology in teleparallel $f(T)$-gravity. We delve extensively into the minisuperspace description within the context of teleparallelism. The $f(T)$-theory constitutes a second-order theory of gravity, whose cosmological counterpart is delineated by a degenerate point-like Lagrangian. To formulate the Hamiltonian function encompassing all constraints and degrees of freedom inherent to $f(T)$ cosmology, we employ the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm. Subsequently, we determine the wave function of the universe and introduce a ``probabilistic'' interpretation. We perform comparisons to some classical solutions to see to what extent the quantum approach can cure classical singularities.

Anisotropic Solutions in Symmetric Teleparallel $f\left( Q\right)$-theory: Kantowski-Sachs and Bianchi III LRS Cosmologies

We investigate the existence of anisotropic self-similar exact solutions in symmetric teleparallel $f\left( Q\right)$-theory. For the background geometry we consider the Kantowski-Sachs and the Locally Rotationally Symmetric Bianchi type III geometries. These two anisotropic spacetimes are of special interest because in the limit of isotropy they are related to the closed and open Friedmann--Lema\^{\i}tre--Robertson--Walker cosmologies respectively. For each spacetime there exist two distinct families of flat, symmetric connections, which share the symmetries of the spacetime. We present the field equations, and from them, we determine the functional form of the $f\left( Q\right)$ Lagrangian which yields self-similar solutions. We initially consider the vacuum case and subsequently we introduce a matter source in terms of a perfect fluid. Last but not least, we report some self-similar solutions corresponding to static spherically symmetric spacetimes.

Self-similar Cosmological Solutions in Symmetric Teleparallel theory: Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker spacetimes

The existence of self-similar solutions is discussed in symmetric teleparallel $f(Q)$-theory for a Friedmann-Lema\^itre-Robertson-Walker background geometry with zero and non-zero spatial curvature. For the four distinct families of connections which describe the specific cosmology in symmetric teleparallel gravity, the functional form of $f(Q)$ is reconstructed. Finally, to see if the analogy with General Relativity holds, we discuss the relation of the self-similar solutions with the asymptotic behaviour of more general $f(Q)$ functions.

Hidden symmetries from distortions of the conformal structure

It is well established that the mass parameter breaks the conformal symmetries in the case of geodesic motion. The proper conformal Killing vectors cease to generate conserved charges when non-null geodesics are considered. We examine how the introduction of the mass is actually related to the appearance of appropriate distortions in the conformal sector, which lead to new conservation laws. As a prominent example we use a general pp-wave metric, which exploits this property to the maximum. We study the necessary geometric conditions, so that such types of distortions are applicable. We show that the relative vectors are generators of disformal transformations and prove their connection to higher order (hidden) symmetries. Except from the pp-wave geometry, we also provide an additional example in the form of the de Sitter metric. Again, the proper conformal Killing vectors can be appropriately distorted to generate conserved quantities for massive geodesics. Subsequently, we proceed by introducing an additional symmetry breaking effect. The latter is realized by considering a Bogoslovsky type of line-element, which involves a Lorentz violating parameter. We utilize once more the pp-wave case as a guide to study how the broken symmetries - this time also related to Killing vectors - are substituted by distortions of the original generators. We further analyze and discuss the necessary geometric conditions that lead to the emergence of these distortions.

FLRW solutions in $f(Q)$ theory: the effect of using different connections

We study a Friedmann-Lema\^{\i}tre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) space-time in the theory of $f(Q)$-gravity, where $Q$ denotes the non-metricity scalar. It has been previously shown in the literature, that there exist four distinct families of connections, which are compatible with the isometries of the FLRW metric; three for the spatially flat case and one when the spatial curvature is present. In the spatially flat case, one connection is dynamically irrelevant and yields the dynamics of the coincident gauge in the Cartesian coordinates. For this, we obtain the general solution of an arbitrary $f(Q)$ theory with a perfect fluid matter content, and present various examples for specific choices of the $f(Q)$ function. We proceed by studying the effect of the rest of the connections, which are dynamical and affect the equations of the motion. We concentrate in scenarios that depart from the $Q=$const. case, which just reproduces General Relativity with a cosmological constant, and derive novel vacuum solutions for a power-law $f(Q)$ function.

Generation of new symmetries from explicit symmetry breaking

We study how the explicit symmetry breaking, through a continuous parameter in the Lagrangian, can actually lead to the creation of different types of symmetries. As examples we consider the motion of a relativistic particle in a curved background, where a nonzero mass breaks the symmetry of the conformal algebra of the metric, and the motion in a Bogoslovsky-Finsler space-time, where a Lorentz violation takes place. In the first case, new nonlocal conserved charges emerge in the place of those which were previously generated by the conformal Killing vectors, while in the second, rational in the momenta integrals of motion appear to substitute the linear expressions corresponding to those boosts which fail to be symmetries.

Quantum Cosmology in $f(Q)$ theory

We use Dirac's method for the quantization of constrained systems in order to quantize a spatially flat Friedmann-Lema\^{i}tre-Robertson-Walker spacetime in the context of $f(Q)$ cosmology. When the coincident gauge is considered, the resulting minisuperspace system possesses second class constraints. This distinguishes the quantization process from the typical Wheeler-DeWitt quantization, which is applied for cosmological models where only first class constraints are present (e.g. for models in General Relativity or in $f(R)$ gravity). We introduce the Dirac brackets, find appropriate canonical coordinates and then apply the canonical quantization procedure. We perform this method both in vacuum and in the presence of matter: a minimally coupled scalar field and a perfect fluid with a linear equation of state. We demonstrate that the matter content changes significantly the quantization procedure, with the perfect fluid even requiring to put in use the theory of fractional Quantum Mechanics in which the power of the momentum in the Hamiltonian is associated with the fractal dimension of a L\'evy flight. The results of this analysis can be applied in $f(T)$ teleparallel cosmology, since $f(Q)$ and $f(T)$ theories have the same degrees of freedom and same dynamical constraints in cosmological studies.

Time-covariant Schr\"{o}dinger equation and invariant decay probability: The $\Lambda$-Kantowski-Sachs universe

The system under study is the $\Lambda$-Kantowski-Sachs universe. Its canonical quantization is provided based on a recently developed method: the singular minisuperspace Lagrangian describing the system, is reduced to a regular (by inserting into the dynamical equations the lapse dictated by the quadratic constraint) possessing an explicit (though arbitrary) time dependence; thus a time-covariant Schr\"{o}dinger equation arises. Additionally, an invariant (under transformations $t=f(\tilde{t})$) decay probability is defined and thus ``observers'' which correspond to different gauge choices obtain, by default, the same results. The time of decay for a Gaussian wave packet localized around the point $a=0$ (where $a$ the radial scale factor) is calculated to be of the order $\sim 10^{-42}-10^{-41}\mathrm{s}$. The acquired value is near the end of the Planck era (when comparing to a FLRW universe), during which the quantum effects are most prominent. Some of the results are compared to those obtained by following the well known canonical quantization of cosmological systems, i.e. the solutions of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation.

Hidden Symmetries in Deformed Very Special Relativity

We study particle dynamics in a space-time invariant under the $DISIM_b(2)$ group - the deformation of the $ISIM(2)$ symmetry group of very special relativity. We find that the Lorentz violation leads to the creation of higher order (hidden) symmetries which are connected to those broken at the space-time level. Through the perspective of the conserved quantities of the special relativistic case the Lorentz violation is linked to specific non-commutative relations in phase-space.

Exact black hole solutions in Einstein-Aether Scalar field theory

We present exact solutions in Einstein-aether theory in a static spherically symmetric background space with a spacelike aether field, as a difference with the usual selection of timelike aether field. We assume a coupling between the scalar field and the aether field introduced in the aether coefficients. The exact spacetimes describe hairy black hole solutions for which the limits of the Schwarzschild, de-Sitter Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstr\"om metrics are recovered.

Exact Kantowski-Sachs spacetimes in Einstein-Aether Scalar field theory

Exact and analytic solutions in Einstein-Aether scalar field theory with Kantowski-Sachs background space are determined. The theory of point symmetries is applied to determine the functional form of the unknown functions which defines the gravitational model. Conservation laws are applied to reduce the order of the field equations and write the analytic solution. Moreover, in order to understand the physical behaviour of the cosmological model a detailed analysis of the asymptotic behaviour for the gravitational field equations is performed.

Quantization of Einstein-aether Scalar field Cosmology

We present, for the first time, the quantization process for the Einstein-aether scalar field cosmology. We consider a cosmological theory proposed as a Lorentz violating inflationary model, where the aether and scalar fields interact through the assumption that the aether action constants are ultra-local functions of the scalar field. For this specific theory there is a valid minisuperspace description which we use to quantize. For a particular relation between the two free functions entering the reduced Lagrangian the solution to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation as also the generic classical solution are presented for any given arbitrary potential function.

Infinite dimensional symmetry groups of the Friedmann equations

We find the symmetry generators for the Friedman equations emanating from a perfect fluid source, in the presence of a cosmological constant term. The relevant dynamics is seen to be governed by two coupled, first order ordinary differential equations, the continuity and the quadratic constraint equation. Arbitrary functions appear in the components of the symmetry vector, indicating the infinity of the group. When the equation of state is considered as arbitrary but ab initio given, previously known results are recovered and/or generalized. When the pressure is considered among the dynamical variables, solutions for models with different equations of state are mapped to each other; thus enabling the presentation of solutions to models with complicated equations of state starting from simple known cases.

Geodesic motion in Bogoslovsky-Finsler Spacetimes

We study the free motion of a massive particle moving in the background of a Finslerian deformation of a plane gravitational wave in Einstein's General Relativity. The deformation is a curved version of a one-parameter family of Relativistic Finsler structures introduced by Bogoslovsky, which are invariant under a certain deformation of Cohen and Glashow's Very Special Relativity group ISIM(2). The partially broken Carroll Symmetry we derive using Baldwin-Jeffery-Rosen coordinates allows us to integrate the geodesics equations. The transverse coordinates of timelike Finsler-geodesics are identical to those of the underlying plane gravitational wave for any value of the Bogoslovsky-Finsler parameter $b$. We then replace the underlying plane gravitational wave by a homogenous pp-wave solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations. We conclude by extending the theory to the Finsler-Friedmann-Lemaitre model.

Conformal symmetries and integrals of the motion in pp waves with external electromagnetic fields

The integrals of the motion associated with conformal Killing vectors of a curved space-time with an additional electromagnetic background are studied for massive particles. They involve a new term which might be non-local. The difficulty disappears for pp-waves, for which explicit, local conserved charges are found. Alternatively, the mass can be taken into account by "distorting" the conformal Killing vectors. The relation of these non-point symmetries to the charges is analysed both in the Lagrangian and Hamiltonian approaches, as well as in the framework of Eisenhart-Duval lift.
