Cosmological Solutions in Multiscalar Field Theory

We consider a cosmological model with two scalar fields minimally coupled to gravity which have a mixed kinetic term. Hence, Chiral cosmology is included in our analysis. The coupling function and the potential function, which depend on one of the fields, characterize the model we study. We prove the existence of exact solutions that are of special interest for the cosmological evolution. Furthermore, we provide with a methodology that relates the scale factor behaviour to the free functions characterizing the scalar field kinetic term coupling and potential. We derive the necessary conditions that connect these two functions so that the relative cosmological solutions can be admitted. We find that unified dark matter and dark energy solutions are allowed by the theory in various scenarios involving the aforementioned functions.

Classical and quantum analysis of 3D electromagnetic pp-wave spacetime

The general classical solution of the 3D electromagnetic pp-wave spacetime has been obtained. The relevant line element contains an arbitrary essential function providing an infinite number of in-equivalent geometries as solutions. A classification is presented based on the symmetry group. To the best of our knowledge, the solution corresponding to only one of the Classes is known. The dynamics of some of the Classes was also derived from a minisuperspace Lagrangian which has been constructed. This Lagrangian contains a degree of freedom (the lapse) which can be considered either as dynamical or non-dynamical (indicating a singular or a regular Lagrangian correspondingly). Surprisingly enough, on the space of classical solutions, an equivalence of these two points of view can be established. The canonical quantization is then used in order to quantize the system for both the singular and regular Hamiltonian. A subsequent interpretation of quantum states is based on a Bohm-like analysis. The semi-classical trajectories deviate from the classical only for the regular Hamiltonian and in particular for a superposition of eigenstates (a Gaussian initial state has been used). Thus, the above mentioned equivalence is broken at the quantum level. It is noteworthy that the semi-classical trajectories tend to the classical ones in the limit where the initial wavepacket is widely spread. Hence, even with this simple superposition state, the classical solutions are acquired as a limit of the semi-classical.

Integrability of geodesic motions in curved manifolds through non-local conserved charges

In this work we study the general system of geodesic equations for the case of a massive particle moving on an arbitrary curved manifold. The investigation is carried out from the symmetry perspective. By exploiting the parametrization invariance property of the system we define nonlocal conserved charges that are independent from the typical integrals of motion constructed out of possible Killing vectors/tensors of the background metric. We show that with their help every two dimensional surface can - at least in principle - be characterized as integrable. Due to the nonlocal nature of these quantities not more than two can be used at the same time unless the solution of the system is known. We demonstrate that even so, the two dimensional geodesic problem can always be reduced to a single first order ordinary differential equation; we also provide several examples of this process.

Analytic Studies of Static and Transport Properties of (Gauged) Skyrmions

We study static and transport properties of Skyrmions living within a finite spatial volume in a flat (3+1)-dimensional spacetime. In particular, we derive an explicit analytic expression for the compression modulus corresponding to these Skyrmions living within a finite box and we show that such expression can produce a reasonable value. The gauged version of these solitons can be also considered. It is possible to analyze the order of magnitude of the contributions to the electrons conductivity associated to the interactions with this Baryonic environment. The typical order of magnitude for these contributions\ to conductivity can be compared with the experimental values of the conductivity of layers of Baryons.

Integrability of the mixmaster model

The mixmaster model has always been a field of controversy in the literature regarding its (non)integrability. In this work, we make use of a generalized definition of a class of nonlocal conserved charges in phase space to demonstrate that the anisotropic Bianchi type IX model in vacuum is -at least locally - Liouville integrable, thus supporting the findings of previous works pointing to this result. These additional integrals of motion that we use can be defined only due to the parametrization invariance of the system and can be seen to possess an explicit dependence on time. By promoting the time variable to a degree of freedom, we demonstrate the existence of two sets of four independent conserved charges that are in involution, thus leading to the characterization of the system as integrable in terms of the Liouville-Arnold theorem.

Quantum cosmology of Bianchi VIII, IX LRS geometries

In the present work we revisit the axisymmetric Bianchi VIII and IX models. At the classical level we reproduce the known analytic solution, in a novel way making use of two quadratic integrals of motion, the constraint equation, as well as a linear non-local integral of motion. These quantities correspond to two second rank Killing tensors and a homothetic vector field existing on the relevant configuration space. On the corresponding phase space the two quadratic charges commute with the Hamiltonian constraint but not among themselves. Thus, after turning these charges into operators we obtain two different solutions to the Wheeler DeWitt equation utilizing each of the quadratic operators. The homothetic vector is then used, as a natural guide line, to define a normalizable conditional probability which assigns zero to the classically collapsed configurations.

Black branes in four-dimensional conformal equivalent theories

The physical properties of static analytic solutions which describe black brane geometries are discussed. In particular we study the similarities and differences of analytic black brane/string solutions in the Einstein and Jordan frames. The comparison is made between vacuum power law $f(R)$ gravity solutions and their conformal equivalents in the Einstein frame. In our analysis we examine how the geometrical and physical properties of these analytic axisymmetric solutions - such as singularities, the temperature and the entropy - are affected as we pass from one frame to the other.

Quantum cosmology of a Bianchi III LRS geometry coupled to a source free electromagnetic field

We consider a Bianchi type III axisymmetric geometry in the presence of an electromagnetic field. A first result at the classical level is that the symmetry of the geometry need not be applied on the electromagnetic tensor $F_{μν}$; the algebraic restrictions, implied by the Einstein field equations to the stress energy tensor $T_{μν}$, suffice to reduce the general $F_{μν}$ to the appropriate form. The classical solution thus found contains a time dependent electric and a constant magnetic charge. The solution is also reachable from the corresponding mini-superspace action, which is strikingly similar to the Reissner-Nordstr{ö}m one. This points to a connection between the black hole geometry and the cosmological solution here found, which is the analog of the known correlation between the Schwarzschild and the Kantowski-Sachs metrics. The configuration space is drastically modified by the presence of the magnetic charge from a 3D flat to a 3D pp wave geometry. We map the emerging linear and quadratic classical integrals of motion, to quantum observables. Along with the Wheeler-DeWitt equation these observables provide unique, up to constants, wave functions. The employment of a Bohmian interpretation of these quantum states results in deterministic (semi-classical) geometries most of which are singularity free.

(Compactified) black branes in four dimensional f(R)-gravity

A new family of analytical solutions in a four dimensional static spacetime is presented for $f\left( R\right) $-gravity. In contrast to General Relativity, we find that a non trivial black string/ring solution is supported in vacuum power law $f\left( R\right) $-gravity for appropriate values of the parameters characterizing the model and when axisymmetry is introduced in the line element. For the aforementioned solution, we perform a brief investigation over its basic thermodynamic quantities.

Analytic topologically non-trivial solutions of the (3+1)-dimensional $U(1)$ gauged Skyrme model and extended duality

We construct the first analytic examples of topologically non-trivial solutions of the (3+1)-dimensional $U(1)$ gauged Skyrme model within a finite box in (3+1)-dimensional flat space-time. There are two types of gauged solitons. The first type corresponds to gauged Skyrmions living within a finite volume. The second corresponds to gauged time-crystals (smooth solutions of the $U(1)$ gauged Skyrme model whose periodic time-dependence is protected by a winding number). The notion of electromagnetic duality can be extended for these two types of configurations in the sense that the electric and one of the magnetic components can be interchanged. These analytic solutions show very explicitly the Callan-Witten mechanism (according to which magnetic monopoles may "swallow" part of the topological charge of the Skyrmion) since the electromagnetic field contribute directly to the conserved topological charge of the gauged Skyrmions. As it happens in superconductors, the magnetic field is suppressed in the core of the gauged Skyrmions. On the other hand, the electric field is strongly suppresed in the core of gauged time crystals.

Integrability and chemical potential in the (3+1)-dimensional Skyrme model

Using a remarkable mapping from the original (3+1)dimensional Skyrme model to the Sine-Gordon model, we construct the first analytic examples of Skyrmions as well as of Skyrmions--anti-Skyrmions bound states within a finite box in 3+1 dimensional flat space-time. An analytic upper bound on the number of these Skyrmions--anti-Skyrmions bound states is derived. We compute the critical isospin chemical potential beyond which these Skyrmions cease to exist. With these tools, we also construct topologically protected time-crystals: time-periodic configurations whose time-dependence is protected by their non-trivial winding number. These are striking realizations of the ideas of Shapere and Wilczek. The critical isospin chemical potential for these time-crystals is determined.

Integrability from Point Symmetries in a family of Cosmological Horndeski Lagrangians

For a family of Horndeski theories, formulated in terms of a generalized Galileon model, we study the integrability of the field equations in a Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker spacetime. We are interested in point transformations which leave invariant the field equations. Noether's theorem is applied to determine the conservation laws for a family of models that belong to the same general class. The cosmological scenarios with or without an extra perfect fluid with constant equation of state parameter are the two important cases of our study. \ The De Sitter universe and ideal gas solutions are derived by using the invariant functions of the symmetry generators as a demonstration of our result. Furthermore, we discuss the connection of the different models under conformal transformations while we show that when the Horndeski theory reduces to a canonical field the same holds for the conformal equivalent theory. Finally we discuss how singular solutions provides nonsingular universes in a different frame and vice versa.

Discrete spectrum of the quantum Reissner - Nordström geometry

We start from a static, spherically symmetric space-time in the presence of an electrostatic field and construct the mini-superspace Lagrangian that reproduces the well known Reissner - Nordström solution. We identify the classical integrals of motion that are to be mapped to quantum observables and which are associated with the mass and charge. Their eigenvalue equations are used as supplementary conditions to the Wheeler-DeWitt equation and a link is provided between the existence of an horizon and to whether the spectrum of the observables is fully discrete or not. For each case we provide an orthonormal basis of states as emerges through the process of canonical quantization.

Noether symmetries and stability of ideal gas solution in Galileon Cosmology

A class of generalized Galileon cosmological models, which can be described by a point-like Lagrangian, is considered in order to utilize Noether's Theorem to determine conservation laws for the field equations. In the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universe, the existence of a nontrivial conservation law indicates the integrability of the field equations. Due to the complexity of the latter, we apply the differential invariants approach in order to construct special power-law solutions and study their stability.

Decoupling of the re-parametrization degree of freedom and a generalized probability in quantum cosmology

The high degree of symmetry renders the dynamics of cosmological as well as some black hole spacetimes describable by a system of finite degrees of freedom. These systems are generally known as minisuperspace models. One of their important key features is the invariance of the corresponding reduced actions under reparametrizations of the independent variable, a fact that can be seen as the remnant of the general covariance of the full theory. In the case of a system of $n$ degrees of freedom, described by a Lagrangian quadratic in velocities, one can use the lapse by either gauge fixing it or letting it be defined by the constraint and subsequently substitute into the rest of the equations. In the first case, the system is solvable for $n$ accelerations and the constraint becomes a restriction among constants. In the second case, the system can only be solved for $n-1$ accelerations and the "gauge" freedom is transferred to the choice of one of the scalar degrees of freedom. In this paper, we take the second path and express all $n-1$ scalar degrees of freedom in terms of the remaining one, say $q$. By considering these $n-1$ degrees of freedom as arbitrary but given functions of $q$, we manage to extract a two dimensional pure gauge system consisting of the lapse $N$ and the arbitrary $q$: in a way, we decouple the reparametrization invariance from the rest of the equations of motion. The solution of the corresponding quantum two dimensional system is used for the definition of a generalized probability for every configuration $f^i (q)$, be it classical or not. The main result is that, interestingly enough, this probability attains its extrema on the classical solution of the initial $n$-dimensional system.

General Analytic Solutions of Scalar Field Cosmology with Arbitrary Potential

We present the solution space for the case of a minimally coupled scalar field with arbitrary potential in a FLRW metric. This is made possible due to the existence of a nonlocal integral of motion corresponding to the conformal Killing field of the two-dimensional minisuperspace metric. The case for both spatially flat and non flat are studied first in the presence of only the scalar field and subsequently with the addition of non interacting perfect fluids. It is verified that this addition does not change the general form of the solution, but only the particular expressions of the scalar field and the potential. The results are applied in the case of parametric dark energy models where we derive the scalar field equivalence solution for some proposed models in the literature.

Variational Contact Symmetries of Constraint Lagrangians

The investigation of contact symmetries of re--parametrization invariant Lagrangians of finite degrees of freedom and quadratic in the velocities is presented. The main concern of the paper is those symmetry generators which depend linearly in the velocities. A natural extension of the symmetry generator along the lapse function $N(t)$, with the appropriate extension of the dependence in $\dot{N}(t)$ of the gauge function, is assumed; this action yields new results. The central finding is that the integrals of motion are either linear or quadratic in velocities and are generated, respectively by the conformal Killing vector fields and the conformal Killing tensors of the configuration space metric deduced from the kinetic part of the Lagrangian (with appropriate conformal factors). The freedom of re--parametrization allows one to appropriately scale $N(t)$, so that the potential becomes constant; in this case the integrals of motion can be constructed from the Killing fields and Killing tensors of the scaled metric. A rather interesting result is the non--necessity of the gauge function in Noether's theorem due to the presence of the Hamiltonian constraint
