Thermodynamics of the Bosonic Randomized Riemann Gas

The partition function of a bosonic Riemann gas is given by the Riemann zeta function. We assume that the hamiltonian of this gas at a given temperature $β^{-1}$ has a random variable $ω$ with a given probability distribution over an ensemble of hamiltonians. We study the average free energy density and average mean energy density of this arithmetic gas in the complex $β$-plane. Assuming that the ensemble is made by an enumerable infinite set of copies, there is a critical temperature where the average free energy density diverges due to the pole of the Riemann zeta function. Considering an ensemble of non-enumerable set of copies, the average free energy density is non-singular for all temperatures, but acquires complex values in the critical region. Next, we study the mean energy density of the system which depends strongly on the distribution of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. Using a regularization procedure we prove that the this quantity is continuous and bounded for finite temperatures.

Relativistic Bose-Einstein condensation with disorder

We investigate the thermodynamics of a self-interacting relativistic charged scalar field in the presence of weak disorder. We consider quenched disorder which couples linearly to the mass of the scalar field. After performing noise averages over the free energy of the system, we find that disorder increases the mean-field critical temperature for Bose-Einstein condensation at finite density. The effect of disorder on the temperature dependence of the chemical potential for a fixed charge density is investigated. Significant differences from the mean-field temperature dependence of the chemical potential are observed as the strength of the noise intensity increases. Finally, the temperature dependence of the chemical potential with fixed total charge and entropy is investigated. It is found that there is no Bose-Einstein condensation for a fixed charge to entropy ratio in the presence of weak disorder. The possible relevance of the findings in the present paper in different areas is discussed.

One-loop effective action and the Riemann Zeros

We present a remarkable connection between the asymptotic behavior of the Riemann zeros and one-loop effective action in Euclidean scalar field theory. We show that in a two-dimensional space, the asymptotic behavior of the Fourier transform of two-point correlation functions fits the asymptotic distribution of the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. We work out an explicit example, namely the non-linear sigma model in the leading order in $1/N$ expansion.

Vacuum Lightcone Fluctuations in a Dielectric

A model for observable effects of electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations is presented. The model involves a probe pulse which traverses a slab of nonlinear optical material with a nonzero second order polarizability. We argue that the pulse interacts with the ambient vacuum fluctuations of other modes of the quantized electric field, and these vacuum fluctuations cause variations in the flight time of the pulse through the material. The geometry of the slab of material defines a sampling function for the quantized electric field, which in turn determines that vacuum modes whose wavelengths are of the order of the thickness of the slab give the dominant contribution. Some numerical estimates are made, which indicate that fractional fluctuations in flight time of the order of $10^{-9}$ are possible in realistic situations. The model presented here is both an illustration of a physical effect of vacuum fluctuations, and an analog model for the lightcone fluctuations predicted by quantum gravity.

Casimir Energy Corrections by Light-Cone Fluctuations

We study the effects of light-cone fluctuations on the renormalized zero-point energy associated with a free massless scalar field in the presence of boundaries. In order to simulate light-cone fluctuations we introduce a space-time dependent random coefficient in the Klein-Gordon operator. We assume that the field is defined in a domain with one confined direction. For simplicity, we choose the symmetric case of two parallel plates separated by a distance $a$. The correction to the renormalized vacuum energy density between the plates goes as $1/a^{8}$ instead of the usual $1/a^{4}$ dependence for the free case. In turn we also show that light-cone fluctuations break down the vacuum pressure homogeneity between the plates.

Markovian versus non-Markovian stochastic quantization of a complex-action model

We analyze the Markovian and non-Markovian stochastic quantization methods for a complex action quantum mechanical model analog to a Maxwell-Chern-Simons eletrodynamics in Weyl gauge. We show through analytical methods convergence to the correct equilibrium state for both methods. Introduction of a memory kernel generates a non-Markovian process which has the effect of slowing down oscillations that arise in the Langevin-time evolution toward equilibrium of complex action problems. This feature of non-Markovian stochastic quantization might be beneficial in large scale numerical simulations of complex action field theories on a lattice.

Riemann zeta zeros and zero-point energy

We postulate the existence of a self-adjoint operator associated to a system with countably infinite number of degrees of freedom whose spectrum is the sequence of the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function. We assume that it describes a massive scalar field coupled to a background field in a $(d+1)$-dimensional flat space-time. The scalar field is confined to the interval $[0,a]$ in one dimension and is not restricted in the other dimensions. The renormalized zero-point energy of this system is presented using techniques of dimensional and analytic regularization. In even dimensional space-time, the series that defines the regularized vacuum energy is finite. For the odd-dimensional case, to obtain a finite vacuum energy per unit area we are forced to introduce mass counterterms. A Riemann mass appears, which is the correction to the mass of the field generated by the nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function.

Riemann zeta zeros and prime number spectra in quantum field theory

The Riemann hypothesis states that all nontrivial zeros of the zeta function lie in the critical line $\Re(s)=1/2$. Hilbert and Pólya suggested that one possible way to prove the Riemann hypothesis is to interpret the nontrivial zeros in the light of spectral theory. Following this approach, we discuss a necessary condition that such a sequence of numbers should obey in order to be associated with the spectrum of a linear differential operator of a system with countably infinite number of degrees of freedom described by quantum field theory. The sequence of nontrivial zeros is zeta regularizable. Then, functional integrals associated with hypothetical systems described by self-adjoint operators whose spectra is given by this sequence can be constructed. However, if one considers the same situation with primes numbers, the associated functional integral cannot be constructed, due to the fact that the sequence of prime numbers is not zeta regularizable. Finally, we extend this result to sequences whose asymptotic distributions are not "far away" from the asymptotic distribution of prime numbers.

Quantum Field Theories and Prime Numbers Spectrum

The Riemann hypothesis states that all nontrivial zeros of the zeta function lie on the critical line $\Re(s)=1/2$. Hilbert and Pólya suggested a possible approach to prove it, based on spectral theory. Within this context, some authors formulated the question: is there a quantum mechanical system related to the sequence of prime numbers? In this Letter we show that such a sequence is not zeta regularizable. Therefore, there are no physical systems described by self-adjoint operators with countably infinite number of degrees of freedom with spectra given by the sequence of primes numbers.

Light-cone fluctuations and the renormalized stress tensor of a massless scalar field

We investigate the effects of light-cone fluctuations over the renormalized vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy tensor of a real massless minimally coupled scalar field defined in a ($d+1$)-dimensional flat space-time with topology ${\cal R}\times {\cal S}^d$. For modeling the influence of light-cone fluctuations over the quantum field, we consider a random Klein-Gordon equation. We study the case of centered Gaussian processes. After taking into account all the realizations of the random processes, we present the correction caused by random fluctuations. The averaged renormalized vacuum expectation value of the stress-energy associated with the scalar field is presented.

Accelerated detectors in Dirac vacuum: the effects of horizon fluctuations

We consider an Unruh-DeWitt detector interacting with a massless Dirac field. Assuming that the detector is moving along an hyperbolic trajectory, we modeled the effects of fluctuations in the event horizon using a Dirac equation with random coefficients. First, we develop the perturbation theory for the fermionic field in a random media. Further we evaluate corrections due to the randomness in the response function associated to different model detectors.

An Analog Model for Quantum Lightcone Fluctuations in Nonlinear Optics

We propose an analog model for quantum gravity effects using nonlinear dielectrics. Fluctuations of the spacetime lightcone are expected in quantum gravity, leading to variations in the flight times of pulses. This effect can also arise in a nonlinear material. We propose a model in which fluctuations of a background electric field, such as that produced by a squeezed photon state, can cause fluctuations in the effective lightcone for probe pulses. This leads to a variation in flight times analogous to that in quantum gravity. We make some numerical estimates which suggest that the effect might be large enough to be observable.

Thermal Radiation from a Fluctuating Event Horizon

We consider a pointlike two-level system undergoing uniformly accelerated motion. We evaluate the transition probability for a finite time interval of this system coupled to a massless scalar field near a fluctuating event horizon. Horizon fluctuations are modeled using a random noise which generates light-cone fluctuations. We study the case of centered, stationary and Gaussian random processes. The transition probability of the system is obtained from the positive-frequency Wightman function calculated to one loop order in the noise averaging process. Our results show that the fluctuating horizon modifies the thermal radiation but leaves unchanged the temperature associated with the acceleration.

An analog fluid model for some tachyonic effects in field theory

We consider the sound radiation from an acoustic point-like source moving along a supersonic ("space-like") trajectory in a fluid at rest. We call it an acoustic "tachyonic" source. We describe the radiation emitted by this supersonic source. After quantizing the acoustic perturbations, we present the distribution of phonons generated by this classical tachyonic source and the classical wave interference pattern.

Path integral approach to the full Dicke model with dipole-dipole interaction

We consider the full Dicke spin-boson model composed by a single bosonic mode and an ensemble of $N$ identical two-level atoms with different couplings for the resonant and anti-resonant interaction terms, and incorporate a dipole-dipole interaction between the atoms. Assuming that the system is in thermal equilibrium with a reservoir at temperature $β^{-1}$, we compute the free energy in the thermodynamic limit $N\rightarrow\infty$ in the saddle-point approximation to the path integral and determine the critical temperature for the superradiant phase transition. In the zero temperature limit, we recover the critical coupling of the quantum phase transition, presented in the literature.

Scalar Quantum Field Theory in Disordered Media

A free massive scalar field in inhomogeneous random media is investigated. The coefficients of the Klein-Gordon equation are taken to be random functions of the spatial coordinates. The case of an annealed-like disordered medium, modeled by centered stationary and Gaussian processes, is analyzed. After performing the averages over the random functions, we obtain the two-point causal Green's function of the model up to one-loop. The disordered scalar quantum field theory becomes qualitatively similar to a $λϕ^{4}$ self-interacting theory with a frequency-dependent coupling.

Analog model for quantum gravity effects: phonons in random fluids

We describe an analog model for quantum gravity effects in condensed matter physics. The situation discussed is that of phonons propagating in a fluid with a random velocity wave equation. We consider that there are random fluctuations in the reciprocal of the bulk modulus of the system and study free phonons in the presence of Gaussian colored noise with zero mean. We show that in this model, after performing the random averages over the noise function a free conventional scalar quantum field theory describing free phonons becomes a self-interacting model.

The Bekenstein Bound in Asymptotically Free Field Theory

For spatially bounded free fields, the Bekenstein bound states that the specific entropy satisfies the inequality $\frac{S}{E} \leq 2 πR$, where $R$ stands for the radius of the smallest sphere that circumscribes the system. The validity of the Bekenstein bound on the specific entropy in the asymptotically free side of the Euclidean $(λ\,ϕ^{\,4})_{d}$ self-interacting scalar field theory is investigated. We consider the system in thermal equilibrium with a reservoir at temperature $β^{\,-1}$ and defined in a compact spatial region without boundaries. Using the effective potential, we presented an exhaustive study of the thermodynamic of the model. For low and high temperatures the system presents a condensate. We obtain also the renormalized mean energy $E$ and entropy $S$ for the system. With these quantities, we shown in which situations the specific entropy satisfies the quantum bound.
