Entangled States and Super-radiant Phase Transition

The Dicke spin-boson model is composed by a single bosonic mode and an ensemble of $N$ identical two-level atoms. Assuming thermal equilibrium with a reservoir at temperature $β^{-1}$, we consider the situation where the coupling between the bosonic mode and the atoms generates resonant and non-resonant processes. The thermodynamic of the model is investigated. Next we introduce dipole-dipole interaction between the atoms. We investigate the transition from fluorescent to super-radiant phase and the quantum phase transition in a situation where the dipole-dipole interaction between the atoms generates entangled states in the atomic system. We proved that, the critical behavior is not modified by the introduction of the dipole-dipole interaction.

Stochastic Quantization of Real-Time Thermal Field Theory

We use the stochastic quantization method to obtain the free scalar propagator of a finite temperature field theory formulated in Minkowski spacetime. First we use the Markovian stochastic quantization approach to present the two-point function of the theory. Second, we assume a Langevin equation with a memory kernel and Einstein's relations with colored noise. The convergence of the stochastic processes in the asymptotic limit of the Markov parameter of these Markovian and non-Markovian Langevin equations for a free scalar theory is obtained. Our formalism can be the starting point to discuss systems at finite temperature out of equilibrium.

Quantum Lightcone Fluctuations in Compactified Spacetimes

We treat the effects of compactified spatial dimensions on the propagation of light in the uncompactified directions in the context of linearized quantum gravity. We find that the flight times of pulses can fluctuate due to modification of the graviton vacuum by the compactification. In the case of a five dimensional Kaluza-Klein theory, the mean variation in flight time can grow logarithmically with the flight distance. This effect is in principle observable, but too small to serve as a realistic probe of the existence of extra dimensions. We also examine the effect of the compactification on the widths of spectral lines, and find that there is a small line narrowing effect. This effect is also small for compactification well above the Planck scale, but might serve as a test of the existence of extra dimensions.

A Fluid Analog Model for Boundary Effects in Field Theory

Quantum fluctuations in the density of a fluid with a linear phonon dispersion relation are studied. In particular, we treat the changes in these fluctuations due to non-classical states of phonons and to the presence of boundaries. These effects are analogous to similar effects in relativistic quantum field theory, and we argue that the case of the fluid is a useful analog model for effects in field theory. We further argue that the changes in the mean squared density are in principle observable by light scattering experiments.

The Phononic Casimir Effect: An Analog Model

We discuss the quantization of sound waves in a fluid with a linear dispersion relation and calculate the quantum density fluctuations of the fluid in several cases. These include a fluid in its ground state. In this case, we discuss the scattering cross section of light by the density fluctuations, and find that in many situations it is small compared to the thermal fluctuations, but not negligibly small and might be observable at room temperature. We also consider a fluid in a squeezed state of phonons and fluids containing boundaries. We suggest that the latter may be a useful analog model for better understanding boundary effects in quantum field theory. In all cases involving boundaries which we consider, the mean squared density fluctuations are reduced by the presence of the boundary. This implies a reduction in the light scattering cross section, which is potentially an observable effect.

Stochastic Quantization of Scalar Fields in de Sitter Spacetime

We consider the stochastic quantization method for scalar fields defined in a curved manifold. The two-point function associated to a massive self-interacting scalar field is evaluated, up to the first order level in the coupling constant $λ$, for the case of de Sitter Euclidean metric. Its value for the asymptotic limit of the Markov parameter $τ\to\infty$ is exhibited. We discuss in detail the covariant stochastic regularization to render the one-loop two-point function finite in the de Sitter Euclidean metric.

Quantum Density Fluctuations in Classical Liquids

We discuss the density fluctuations of a fluid due to zero point motion. These can be regarded as density fluctuations in the phonon vacuum state. We assume a linear dispersion relation with a fixed speed of sound and calculate the density correlation function. We note that this function has the same form as the correlation function for the time derivative of a relativistic massless scalar field, but with the speed of light replaced by the speed of sound. As a result, the study of density fluctuations in a fluid can be a useful analog model for better understanding fluctuations in relativistic quantum field theory. We next calculate the differential cross section for light scattering by the zero point density fluctuations, and find a result proportional to the fifth power of the light frequency. This can be understood as the product of fourth power dependence of the usual Rayleigh cross section with the linear frequency dependence of the spectrum of zero point density fluctuations. We give some estimates of the relative magnitude of this effect compared to the scattering by thermal density fluctuations, and find that it can be of order 0.5% for water at room temperature and optical frequencies. This relative magnitude is proportional to frequency and inversely proportional to temperature. Although the scattering by zero point density fluctuation is small, it may be observable.

Stochastic Quantization for Complex Actions

We use the stochastic quantization method to study systems with complex valued path integral weights. We assume a Langevin equation with a memory kernel and Einstein's relations with colored noise. The equilibrium solution of this non-Markovian Langevin equation is analyzed. We show that for a large class of elliptic non-Hermitian operators acting on scalar functions on Euclidean space, which define different models in quantum field theory, converges to an equilibrium state in the asymptotic limit of the Markov parameter. Moreover, as we expected, we obtain the Schwinger functions of the theory.

Virtual Processes and Superradiance in Spin-Boson Models

We consider spin-boson models composed by a single bosonic mode and an ensemble of $N$ identical two-level atoms. The situation where the coupling between the bosonic mode and the atoms generates real and virtual processes is studied, where the whole system is in thermal equilibrium with a reservoir at temperature $β^{-1}$. Phase transitions from ordinary fluorescence to superradiant phase in three different models is investigated. First a model where the coupling between the bosonic mode and the $j-th$ atom is via the pseudo-spin operator $σ^{,z}_{(j)}$ is studied. Second, we investigate the generalized Dicke model, introducing different coupling constants between the single mode bosonic field and the environment, $g_{1}$ and $g_{2}$ for rotating and counter-rotating terms, respectively. Finally it is considered a modified version of the generalized Dicke model with intensity-dependent coupling in the rotating terms. In the first model the zero mode contributes to render the canonical entropy a negative quantity for low temperatures. The last two models presents phase transitions, even when only Hamiltonian terms which generates virtual processes are considered.

Quantum Bound on the Specific Entropy in Strong-Coupled Scalar Field Theory

Using the Euclidean path integral approach with functional methods, we discuss the $(g_{0} ϕ^{p})_{d}$ self-interacting scalar field theory, in the strong-coupling regime. We assume the presence of macroscopic boundaries confining the field in a hypercube of side $L$. We also consider that the system is in thermal equilibrium at temperature $β^{-1}$. For spatially bounded free fields, the Bekenstein bound states that the specific entropy satisfies the inequality $\frac{S}{E} < 2 πR$, where $R$ stands for the radius of the smallest sphere that circumscribes the system. Employing the strong-coupling perturbative expansion, we obtain the renormalized mean energy $E$ and entropy $S$ for the system up to the order $(g_{0})^{-\frac{2}{p}}$, presenting an analytical proof that the specific entropy also satisfies in some situations a quantum bound. Defining $ε_d^{(r)}$ as the renormalized zero-point energy for the free theory per unit length, the dimensionless quantity $ξ=\fracβ{L}$ and $h_1(d)$ and $h_2(d)$ as positive analytic functions of $d$, for the case of high temperature, we get that the specific entropy satisfies $\frac{S}{E} < 2πR \frac{h_1(d)}{h_2(d)} ξ$. When considering the low temperature behavior of the specific entropy, we have $\frac{S}{E} <2πR \frac{h_1(d)}{ε_d^{(r)}}ξ^{1-d}$. Therefore the sign of the renormalized zero-point energy can invalidate this quantum bound. If the renormalized zero point-energy is a positive quantity, at intermediate temperatures and in the low temperature limit, there is a quantum bound.

Functional Methods in the Generalized Dicke Model

The Dicke model describes an ensemble of N identical two-level atoms (qubits) coupled to a single mode of a bosonic field. The fermion Dicke model should be obtained by changing the atomic pseudo-spin operators by a linear combination of Fermi operators. The generalized fermion Dicke model is defined introducing different coupling constants between the single mode of the bosonic field and the reservoir. In the thermodynamic limit, the fermion Dicke model can be analized using the path integral approach with functional method. The system exhibits a second order phase transition from normal to superrandiance at some critical temperature with the presence of a condensate. We evaluate the critical transition temperature and present the spectrum of the collective bosonic excitations. There is quantum phantum critical behavior when the coupling constants satisfy an especific condition. Two particular situations are analyzed. First, we present the spectrum of the collective bosonic excitations in the case using the rotating-wave approximation, recovering the well know results. Second, the case only considering virtual processes. In the last case, it is possible to have a superradiance phase when only virtual processes are introduced in the interaction Hamiltonian. Here also appears a quantum phase transition at some critical coupling, and for larger values for the critical coupling, the system enter in this superradiant phase with a Goldstone mode.

Stochastic Quantization of Scalar Fields in Einstein and Rindler Spacetime

We consider the stochastic quantization method for scalar fields defined in a curved manifold and also in a flat space-time with event horizon. The two-point function associated to a massive self-interacting scalar field is evaluated, up to the first order level in the coupling constant, for the case of an Einstein and also a Rindler Euclidean metric, respectively. Its value for the asymptotic limit of the Markov parameter is exhibited. The divergences therein are taken care of by employing a covariant stochastic regularization.

A Continuously Observed Two-level System Interacting with a Vacuum Field

A discussion of the quantum Zeno effect and paradox is given. The quantum Zeno paradox claims that a continuously observed system, prepared in a state which is not an eigenstate of the Hamiltonian operator, never decays. To recover the classical behavior of unstable systems we consider a two-level system interacting with a Bose field, respectively prepared in the excited state and in the Poincare invariant vacuum state. Using time-dependent perturbation theory, we evaluate for a finite time interval the probability of spontaneous decay of the two-level system. Using the standard argument to obtain the quantum Zeno paradox, we consider N measurements where N goes to infinity and we obtain that the non-decay probability law is a pure exponential, therefore recovering the classical behavior.

Attractive Casimir effect in an infrared modified gluon bag model

In this work, we are motivated by previous attempts to derive the vacuum contribution to the bag energy in terms of familiar Casimir energy calculations for spherical geometries. A simple infrared modified model is introduced which allows studying the effects of the analytic structure as well as the geometry in a clear manner. In this context, we show that if a class of infrared vanishing effective gluon propagators is considered, then the renormalized vacuum energy for a spherical bag is attractive, as required by the bag model to adjust hadron spectroscopy.

The Two-loop Massless phi^4 Model in Non-translational Invariant Domain

We study the $\fracλ{4!}ϕ^{4}$ massless scalar field theory in a four-dimensional Euclidean space, where all but one of the coordinates are unbounded. We are considering Dirichlet boundary conditions in two hyperplanes, breaking the translation invariance of the system. We show how to implement the perturbative renormalization up to two-loop level of the theory. First, analyzing the full two and four-point functions at the one-loop level, we shown that the bulk counterterms are sufficient to render the theory finite. Meanwhile, at the two-loop level, we have to introduce also surface counterterms in the bare lagrangian in order to make finite the full two and also four-point Schwinger functions.

Stochastic Quantization of $(λϕ^{4})_d$ Scalar Theory: Generalized Langevin Equation with Memory Kernel

We review the method of stochastic quantization for a scalar field theory. We first give a brief survey for the case of self-interacting scalar fields, implementing the stochastic perturbation theory up to the one-loop level. The divergences therein are taken care of by employing the usual prescription of the stochastic regularization, introducing a colored random noise in the Einstein relations. We then extend this formalism to the case where we assume a Langevin equation with a memory kernel. We have shown that, if we also maintain the Einstein's relations with a colored noise, there is convergence to a non-regularized theory.

The Partition Function for the Anharmonic Oscillator in the Strong-Coupling Regime

We consider a single anharmonic oscillator with frequency $ω$ and coupling constant $λ$ respectively, in the strong-coupling regime. We are assuming that the system is in thermal equilibrium with a reservoir at temperature $β^{-1}$. Using the strong-coupling perturbative expansion, we obtain the partition function for the oscillator in the regime $λ>>ω$, up to the order $\frac{1}{\sqrtλ}$. To obtain this result, we use of a combination of Klauder's independent-value generating functional (Acta Phys. Austr. {\bf 41}, 237 (1975)), and the generalized zeta-function method. The free energy and the mean energy, up to the order $\frac{1}{\sqrtλ}$, are also presented. We are showing that the thermodynamics quantities are nonanalytic in the coupling constant.
