Projection Method for Exact Diagonalization in the Strong Coupling Limit for Frustrated Models with Highly Degenerate Ground States

In this paper, we carry out a new technique named projection ED and indicate that it is applicable to the frustrated models, e.g., XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg and spinless fermion t-V models, in the strong coupling limit with highly degenerate ground states in a general way. As an example, we deal with a spinless fermion t-V model on a triangular lattice and show the usefulness of the method.

Electronic Structures of CaAlSi with Different Stacking AlSi Layers by First-Principles Calculations

The full-potential linear augmented plane-wave calculations have been applied to investigate the systematic change of electronic structures in CaAlSi due to different stacking sequences of AlSi layers. The present ab-initio calculations have revealed that the multistacking, buckling and 60 degrees rotation of AlSi layer affect the electronic band structure in this system. In particular, such a structural perturbation gives rise to the disconnected and cylindrical Fermi surface along the M-L lines of the hexagonal Brillouin zone. This means that multistacked CaAlSi with the buckling AlSi layers increases degree of two-dimensional electronic characters, and it gives us qualitative understanding for the quite different upper critical field anisotropy between specimens with and without superstructure as reported previously.

Study of the One- and Two-Band Models for Colossal Magnetoresistive Manganites Using the Truncated Polynomial Expansion Method

Considerable progress has been recently made in the theoretical understanding of the colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) effect in manganites. The analysis of simple models with two competing states and a resistor network approximation to calculate conductances has confirmed that CMR effects can be theoretically reproduced using non-uniform clustered states. In this paper, the recently proposed Truncated Polynomial Expansion method (TPEM) for spin-fermion systems is tested using the double-exchange one-band, with finite Hund coupling $J_{\rm H}$, and two-band, with infinite $J_{\rm H}$, models. Two dimensional lattices as large as 48$\times$48 are studied, far larger than those that can be handled with standard exact diagonalization (DIAG) techniques for the fermionic sector. The clean limit (i.e. without quenched disorder) is here analyzed in detail. Phase diagrams are obtained, showing first-order transitions separating ferromagnetic metallic from insulating states. A huge magnetoresistance is found at low temperatures by including small magnetic fields, in excellent agreement with experiments. However, at temperatures above the Curie transition the effect is much smaller confirming that the standard finite-temperature CMR phenomenon cannot be understood using homogeneous states. By comparing results between the two methods, TPEM and DIAG, on small lattices, and by analyzing the systematic behavior with increasing cluster sizes, it is concluded that the TPEM is accurate to handle realistic manganite models on large systems. Our results pave the way to a frontal computational attack of the colossal magnetoresistance phenomenon using double-exchange like models, on large clusters, and including quenched disorder.

The Truncated Polynomial Expansion Monte Carlo Method for Fermion Systems Coupled to Classical Fields: A Model Independent Implementation

A software library is presented for the polynomial expansion method (PEM) of the density of states (DOS) developed by two of the authors (N.F. and Y. M.). The library provides all necessary functions for the use of the PEM and its truncated version (TPEM) in a model independent way. The PEM/TPEM replaces the exact diagonalization of the one electron sector in models for fermions coupled to classical fields. The computational cost of the algorithm is O(N) -- with N the number of lattice sites -- for the TPEM which should be contrasted with the computational cost of the diagonalization technique that scales as O(N^4). The method is applied for the first time to a double exchange model with finite Hund coupling and also to diluted spin-fermion models.

Orbital Ordering in ferromagnetic Lu2V2O7

We have observed the orbital ordering in the ferromagnetic Mott-insulator Lu2V2O7 by the polarized neutron diffraction technique. The orbital ordering pattern determined from the observed magnetic form factors can be explained in terms of a linear combination of wave functions |yz>, |zx> and |xy>; |0> = (1/3)^(1/2) |xy> + (1/3)^(1/2)|yz> + (1/3)^(1/2) |zx> which is proportional to |(x + y + z)^2 - r^2>; where each orbital is extended toward the center-of-mass of the V tetrahedron. We discuss the stability of the ferromagnetic Lu2V2O7, using a Hubbard Hamiltonian with these three orbitals.

Spontaneous vortex phase in ErNi2B2C

Below T_{WFM} ~ 2.75K, a weak ferromagnetism and superconductivity coexist in ErNi2B2C. In the present paper, a possibility of a spontaneous vortex phase was examined directly by small angle neutron scattering technique. An external magnetic field was applied to align ferromagnetic domains so that the internal magnetic field induced by the weak ferromagnetism becomes uniform and uniaxial over the bulk sample. When the field is removed, the flux line lattice subsisted below T_{WFM} but disappeared above it. A pinning effect is also discussed. We conclude that the spontaneous vortex state is realized in ErNi2B2C.

Magnon scattering processes and low temperature resistivity in CMR manganites

Low temperature resistivity of CMR manganites is investigated. At the ground state, conduction electrons are perfectly spin polarized, which is called half-metallic. From one-magnon scattering processes, it is discussed that the resistivity of a half metal as a function of temperature scales as rho(T) - rho(0) propto T^3. We take (Nd,Tb,Sr)MnO_3 as an example to compare theory and experiments. The result is in a good agreement.

Observation of anomalous single-magnon scattering in half-metallic ferromagnets by chemical pressure control

Temperature variation of resistivity and specific heat have been measured for prototypical half-metallic ferromagnets, R_0.6Sr_0.4MnO_3, with controlling the one-electron bandwidth W. We have found variation of the temperature scalings in the resistivity from T^2 (R = La, and Nd) to T^3 (R = Sm), and have interpreted the $T^3-law in terms of the anomalous single-magnon scattering (AMS) process in the half-metallic system.

Breakdown of the Landau-Fermi liquid in Two Dimensions due to Umklapp Scattering

We study the renormalization group flow of the interactions in the two-dimensional t-t' Hubbard model near half filling in a N-patch representation of the whole Fermi surface. Starting from weak to intermediate couplings the flows are to strong coupling with different character depending on the choice of parameters. In a large parameter region elastic Umklapp scatterings drive an instability which on parts of the Fermi surface exhibits the key signatures of an insulating spin liquid (ISL), as proposed by Furukawa et al., rather than a conventional symmetry-broken state. The ISL is characterized by both strong d-wave pairing and antiferromagnetic correlations, however it is insulating due to the vanishing local charge compressibility and a spin liquid because of the spin gap arising from the pairing correlations. We find that the ISL is a consequence of a Fermi surface close to the saddle points at the Brillouin zone boundaries which provides an intrinsic and mutually reinforcing coupling between pairing and Umklapp channels.

Thermodynamics of the Double Exchange Systems

This article gives a comprehensive review on the recent studies of the double exchange systems using non-perturbative approaches; the dynamical mean-field theory and the Monte Carlo method. Investigations beyond mean-field type treatments are described. Taking into account strong spin fluctuations which create large changes in conduction electron structure, finite temperature properties as well as dynamics of the system are calculated. Comparisons with experimental data for colossal magnetoresistance manganites are made. We show that high Curie temperature (Tc) compounds, e.g. (La,Sr)MnO3, are canonical double-exchange systems. Properties of other compounds with lower Tc are discussed in relation to inhomogeneities of the system including the issue of phase separation.

Instability of a Landau Fermi liquid as the Mott insulator is approached

We examine a two-dimensional Fermi liquid with a Fermi surface which touches the Umklapp surface first at the 4 points $(\pm π/2, \pm π/2)$ as the electron density is increased. Umklapp processes at the 4 patches near $(\pm π/2, \pmπ/2)$ lead the renormalization group equations to scale to strong coupling resembling the behavior of a 2-leg ladder at half-filling. The incompressible character of the fixed point causes a breakdown of Landau theory at these patches. A further increase in density spreads the incompressible regions so that the open Fermi surface shrinks to 4 disconnected segments. This non-Landau state, in which parts of the Fermi surface are truncated to form an insulating spin liquid, has many features in common with phenomenological models recently proposed for the cuprate superconductors.

Phase Separation in Electronic Models for Manganites

The Kondo lattice Hamiltonian with ferromagnetic Hund's coupling as a model for manganites is investigated. The classical limit for the spin of the (localized) $t_{2g}$ electrons is analyzed on lattices of dimension 1,2,3 and $\infty$ using several numerical methods. The phase diagram at low temperature is presented. A regime is identified where phase separation occurs between hole undoped antiferromagnetic and hole-rich ferromagnetic regions. Experimental consequences of this novel regime are discussed. Regions of incommensurate spin correlations have also been found. Estimations of the critical temperature in 3D are compatible with experiments.

The Ferromagnetic Kondo Model for Manganites: Phase Diagram and Charge Segregation Effects

The phase diagram of the ferromagnetic Kondo model for manganites is investigated using computational techniques. In clusters of dimensions 1 and 2, Monte Carlo simulations in the limit where the localized spins are classical show a rich low temperature phase diagram with three dominant regions: (i) a ferromagnetic phase, (ii) phase separation between hole-poor antiferromagnetic and hole-rich ferromagnetic domains, and (iii) a phase with incommensurate spin correlations. Possible experimental consequences of the regime of phase separation are discussed. Studies using the Lanczos algorithm and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method applied to chains with localized spin 1/2 (with and without Coulombic repulsion for the mobile electrons) and spin 3/2 degrees of freedom give results in excellent agreement with those in the spin localized classical limit. The Dynamical Mean Field ($D=\infty$) approximation was also applied to the same model. At large Hund coupling phase separation and ferromagnetism were identified, again in good agreement with results in low dimensions. In addition, a Monte Carlo study of spin correlations allowed us to estimate the critical temperature for ferromagnetism $T_c^{FM}$ in 3 dimensional clusters. It is concluded that $T_c^{FM}$ is compatible with current experimental results.
