Robust operation of a GaAs tunable barrier electron pump

We demonstrate the robust operation of a gallium arsenide tunable-barrier single-electron pump operating with 1 part-per-million accuracy at a temperature of $1.3$~K and a pumping frequency of $500$~MHz. The accuracy of current quantisation is investigated as a function of multiple control parameters, and robust plateaus are seen as a function of three control gate voltages and RF drive power. The electron capture is found to be in the decay-cascade, rather than the thermally-broadened regime. The observation of robust plateaus at an elevated temperature which does not require expensive refrigeration is an important step towards validating tunable-barrier pumps as practical current standards.

Charge frustration in a triangular triple quantum dot

We experimentally investigate the charge (isospin) frustration induced by a geometrical symmetry in a triangular triple quantum dot. We observe the ground-state charge configurations of six-fold degeneracy, the manifestation of the frustration. The frustration results in omnidirectional charge transport, and it is accompanied by nearby nontrivial triple degenerate states in the charge stability diagram. The findings agree with a capacitive interaction model. We also observe unusual transport by the frustration, which might be related to elastic cotunneling and the interference of trajectories through the dot. This work demonstrates a unique way of studying geometrical frustration in a controllable way.

Multi-Valued Logic Gates based on Ballistic Transport in Quantum Point Contacts

Multi-valued logic gates, which can handle quaternary numbers as inputs, are developed by exploiting the ballistic transport properties of quantum point contacts in series. The principle of a logic gate that finds the minimum of two quaternary number inputs is demonstrated. The device is scalable to allow multiple inputs, which makes it possible to find the minimum of multiple inputs in a single gate operation. Also, the principle of a half-adder for quaternary number inputs is demonstrated. First, an adder that adds up two quaternary numbers and outputs the sum of inputs is demonstrated. Second, a device to express the sum of the adder into two quaternary digits [Carry (first digit) and Sum (second digit)] is demonstrated. All the logic gates presented in this paper can in principle be extended to allow decimal number inputs with high quality QPCs.

Modulation of the Curie Temperature in Ferromagnetic/Ferroelectric Hybrid Double Quantum Wells

We propose a ferromagnetic/ferroelectric hybrid double quantum well structure, and present an investigation of the Curie temperature (Tc) modulation in this quantum structure. The combined effects of applied electric fields and spontaneous electric polarization are considered for a system that consists of a Mn δ-doped well, a barrier, and a p-type ferroelectric well. We calculate the change in the envelope functions of carriers at the lowest energy sub-band, resulting from applied electric fields and switching the dipole polarization. By reversing the depolarizing field, we can achieve two different ferromagnetic transition temperatures of the ferromagnetic quantum well in a fixed applied electric field. The Curie temperature strongly depends on the position of the Mn δ-doped layer and the polarization strength of the ferroelectric well.

Magnetic Quantum Dot: A Magnetic Transmission Barrier and Resonator

We study the ballistic edge-channel transport in quantum wires with a magnetic quantum dot, which is formed by two different magnetic fields B^* and B_0 inside and outside the dot, respectively. We find that the electron states located near the dot and the scattering of edge channels by the dot strongly depend on whether B^* is parallel or antiparallel to B_0. For parallel fields, two-terminal conductance as a function of channel energy is quantized except for resonances, while, for antiparallel fields, it is not quantized and all channels can be completely reflected in some energy ranges. All these features are attributed to the characteristic magnetic confinements caused by nonuniform fields.

M(atrix) Theory on T5/Z2 Orbifold and Five-Branes

We study M(atrix) theory description of M theory compactified on T5/Z2 orbifold. In the large volume limit we show that M theory dynamics is described by N=8 supersymmetric USp(2N) M(atrix) quantum mechanics. Via zero-brane parton scattering, we show that each orbifold fixed point carries anomalous G-flux $\oint [G/2 π]= - 1/2$. To cancel the anomalous G-flux, we introduce twisted sector consisting of sixteen five-branes represented by fundamental representation hypermultiplets. In the small volume limit we show that M theory dynamics is described by by (5+1)-dimensional (8,0) supersymmetric USp(2N) chiral gauge theory. We point out that both perturbative and global gauge anomalies are cancelled by the sixteen fundamental representation hyper- multiplets in the twisted sector. We show that M(atrix) theory is capable of turning on spacetime background with the required sixteen five-branes out of zero-brane partons as bound-states. We determine six-dimensional spacetime spectrum from the M(atrix) theory for both untwisted and twisted sectors and find a complete agreement with the spectrum of (2,0) supergravity. We discuss M(atrix) theory description of compactification moduli space, symmetry enhance- ment thereof as well as further toroidal compactifications.

M(atrix) Theory on T9/Z2 Orbifold and Twisted Zero Brane

M(atrix) theory compactified on an orbifold ${\bf T}_9/{\bf Z}_2$ is studied. Via zero-brane parton scattering we find that each of the $2^9 = 512$ orbifold fixed points carry $-1/32$ units of zero-brane charge. The anomalous flux is cancelled by introducing a twisted sector consisting of 32 zero-branes that are spacetime supersymmetry singlets. These twisted sector zero-branes are nothing but gravitational waves propagating along the M-theory direction. There is no D0-partons in the untwisted sector, a fact consistent with holographic principle. For low-energy excitations, the orbifold compactification is described by ten-dimensional supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group $SO(32)$.

Non-Orientable M(atrix) Theory

M(atrix) theory description is investigated for M-theory compactified on non-orientable manifolds. Relevant M(atrix) theory is obtained by Fourier transformation in a way consistent with T-duality. For nine-dimensional compactification on Klein bottle and Möbius strip, we show that M(atrix) theory is (2+1)-dimensional ${\cal N} = 8$ supersymmetric U(N) gauge theory defined on dual Klein bottle and dual Moebius strip parameter space respectively. The latter requires a twisted sector consisting of sixteen chiral fermions localized parallel to the boundary of dual Moebius strip and defines Narain moduli space of Chaudhuri-Hockney-Lykken heterotic string. For six-dimensional CHL compactification on S1/Z2*T4 we show that low-energy dynamics of M(atrix) theory is described by (5+1)-dimensional ${\cal N} = 8$ supersymmetric U(N)$\times$U(N) gauge theory defined on dual orbifold parameter space of S1*K3/Z2. Spacetime spectrum is deduced from BPS gauge field configurations consistent with respective involutions and is shown to agree with results from M-theory analysis.
