Disorder Effect on the Vortex Pinning by the Cooling Process Control in the Organic Superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br

We investigate the influence of disorders in terminal ethylene groups of BEDT-TTF molecules (ethylene-disorders) on the vortex pinning of the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br. Magnetization measurements are performed under different cooling-processes. The second peak in the magnetization hysteresis curve is observed for all samples studied, and the hysteresis width of the magnetization becomes narrower by cooling faster. In contradiction to the simple pinning effect of disorder, this result shows the suppression of the vortex pinning force by introducing more ethylene-disorders. The ethylene-disorder domain model is proposed for explaining the observed result. In the case of the system containing a moderate number of the ethylene-disorders, the disordered molecules form a domain structure and it works as an effective pinning site. On the contrary, an excess number of the ethylene-disorders may weaken the effect of the domain structure, which results in the less effective pinning force on the vortices.

Electronic correlation in the infrared optical properties of the quasi two dimensional $κ$-type BEDT-TTF dimer system

The polarized optical reflectance spectra of the quasi two dimensional organic correlated electron system $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]$Y$, $Y =$ Br and Cl are measured in the infrared region. The former shows the superconductivity at $T_{\rm c} \simeq$ 11.6 K and the latter does the antiferromagnetic insulator transition at $T_{\rm N} \simeq$ 28 K. Both the specific molecular vibration mode $ν_{3}(a_{g})$ of the BEDT-TTF molecule and the optical conductivity hump in the mid-infrared region change correlatively at $T^{*} \simeq$ 38 K of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br, although no indication of $T^{*}$ but the insulating behaviour below $T_{\rm ins} \simeq$ 50-60 K are found in $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl. The results suggest that the electron-molecular vibration coupling on the $ν_{3}(a_{g})$ mode becomes weak due to the enhancement of the itinerant nature of the carriers on the dimer of the BEDT-TTF molecules below $T^{*}$, while it does strong below $T_{\rm ins}$ because of the localized carriers on the dimer. These changes are in agreement with the reduction and the enhancement of the mid-infrared conductivity hump below $T^{*}$ and $T_{\rm ins}$, respectively, which originates from the transitions between the upper and lower Mott-Hubbard bands. The present observations demonstrate that two different metallic states of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br are regarded as {\it a correlated good metal} below $T^{*}$ including the superconducting state and {\it a half filling bad metal} above $T^{*}$. In contrast the insulating state of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl below $T_{\rm ins}$ is the Mott insulator.

On The Spectrum and Spectropolarimetry of Type Ic Hypernova SN 2003dh/GRB 030329

Spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric observations of SN 2003dh/GRB 030329 obtained in 2003 May using the Subaru 8.2 m telescope are presented. The properties of the SN are investigated through a comparison with spectra of the Type Ic hypernovae SNe 1997ef and 1998bw. (Hypernovae being a tentatively defined class of SNe with very broad absorption features: these features suggest a large velocity of the ejected material and possibly a large explosion kinetic energy.) Comparison with spectra of other hypernovae shows that the spectrum of SN 2003dh obtained on 2003 May 8 and 9, i.e., 34-35 rest-frame days after the GRB (for z=0.1685), are similar to those of SN 1997ef obtained ~34-42 days after the fiducial time of explosion of that SN. The match with SN 1998bw spectra is not as good (at rest 7300-8000 A, but again spectra obtained ~33-43 days after GRB 980425 are preferred. This indicates that the SN may have intermediate properties between SNe 1997ef and 1998bw. Based on the analogy with the other hypernovae, the time of explosion of SN 2003dh is then constrained to be between -8 and +2 days of the GRB. The Si and O P-Cygni lines of SN 2003dh seem comparable to those of SN 1997ef, which suggests that the ejected mass in SN 2003dh may match that in SN 1997ef. Polarization was marginally detected at optical wavelengths. This is consistent with measurements of the late afterglow, implying that it mostly originated in the interstellar medium of the host galaxy.

Spatially Resolved 3 um Spectroscopy of IRAS 22272+5435: Formation and Evolution of Aliphatic Hydrocarbon Dust in Proto-Planetary Nebula

We present medium-resolution 3 um spectroscopy of the carbon-rich proto-planetary nebula IRAS 22272+5435. Spectroscopy with the Subaru Telescope adaptive optics system revealed a spatial variation of hydrocarbon molecules and dust surrounding the star. The ro-vibrational bands of acetylene (C2H2) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN) at 3.0 um are evident in the central star spectra. The molecules are concentrated in the compact region near the center. The 3.3 and 3.4 um emission of aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons is detected at 600--1300 AU from the central star. The separation of spatial distribution between gas and dust suggests that the small hydrocarbon molecules are indeed the source of solid material, and that the gas leftover from the grain formation is being observed near the central star. The intensity of aliphatic hydrocarbon emission relative to the aromatic hydrocarbon emission decreases with distance from the central star. The spectral variation is well matched to that of a laboratory analog thermally annealed with different temperatures. We suggest that either the thermal process after the formation of a grain or the variation in the temperature in the dust-forming region over time determines the chemical composition of the hydrocarbon dust around the proto-planetary nebula.

Absorption Line Survey of H3+ toward the Galactic Center Sources I. GCS 3-2 and GC IRS3

We present high-resolution (R = 20000) spectroscopy of H3+ absorption toward the luminous Galactic center sources GCS 3-2 and GC IRS 3. With the efficient wavelength coverage afforded by Subaru IRCS, six absorption lines of H3+ have been detected in each source from 3.5 to 4.0 um, three of which are new. In particular the 3.543 um absorption line of the R(3, 3)^l transition arising from the metastable (J, K) = (3, 3) state has been tentatively detected for the first time in the interstellar medium, where previous observations of H3+ had been limited to absorption lines from the lowest levels: (J, K) = (1, 0) of ortho-H3+ and (1, 1) of para-H3+. The H3+ absorption toward the Galactic center takes place in dense and diffuse clouds along the line of sight as well as the molecular complex close to the Galactic nucleus. At least four kinematic components are found in the H3+ absorption lines. We suggest identifications of the velocity components with those of HI, CO, and H2CO previously reported from radio and infrared observations. H3+ components with velocities that match those of weak and sharp CO and H2CO lines are attributed to diffuse clouds. Our observation has revealed a striking difference between the absorption profiles of H3+ and CO, demonstrating that the spectroscopy of H3+ provides information complementary to that obtained from CO spectroscopy. The tentative detection of the R(3, 3)^l line and the non-detection of spectral lines from other J > 1 levels provide observational evidence for the metastability of the (3, 3) level, which is theoretically expected. This suggests that other metastable J = K levels with higher J may also be populated.

Deep Near-Infrared Observations and Identifications of Chandra Sources in the Orion Molecular Cloud 2 and 3

We conducted deep NIR imaging observations of the Orion molecular cloud 2 and 3 using QUIRC on the 88-inch telescope of the University of Hawaii. Our purposes are 1) to generate a comprehensive NIR source catalog of these star forming clouds, and 2) to identify the NIR counterpart of the Chandra X-ray sources that have no counterpart in the 2MASS catalog. Our J-, H-, and K-band observations are about 2 mag deeper than those of 2MASS, and well match the current Chandra observation. We detected 1448 NIR sources, for which we derived the position, the J-, H-, and K-band magnitude, and the 2MASS counterpart. Using this catalog, we identified the NIR counterpart for about 42% of the 2MASS-unIDed Chandra sources. The nature of these Chandra sources are discussed using their NIR colors and spatial distributions, and a dozen protostar and brown dwarf candidates are identified.

Shubnikov - de Haas effect in the quantum vortex liquid state of the organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$

We report the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations observed in the vortex liquid state of the quasi two dimensional organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$. The SdH oscillations can be observed down to about 5 T at 0.5 K, where the flux flow resistivity becomes as small as about 30 % of the normal state value. Below the upper critical field $H_{\rm c2}$ of about 7 T, the additional damping of the SdH oscillation amplitude appears, as well as that of the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations, with respect to the normal state one which is described with the standard Lifshitz-Kosevich formula. The magnitude of the additional damping near $H_{\rm c2}$ is the same with that observed in the dHvA oscillations and well explained by the theoretical predictions in consideration of fluctuations in the thermal vortex liquid state. In the quantum fluctuation region at lower temperature, however, only SdH effect shows the stronger damping than that of the dHvA oscillations. The different magnetic field dependence of the additional damping of the oscillation amplitude between the SdH and dHvA effects is discussed in connection with the effect of the transport current on the short-range order of vortices in the quantum vortex slush state reported at the same temperature and magnetic field region.

Low temperature vortex liquid states induced by quantum fluctuations in the quasi two dimensional organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_{2} Cu(NCS)_{2}

We report the transport properties in the vortex liquid states induced by quantum fluctuations at low temperature in the layered organic superconductor kappa-(BEDT-TTF)_{2} Cu(NCS)_{2}. A steep drop of the resistivity observed below about 1 K separates the liquid state into two regions. In the low resistance state at lower temperature, a finite resistivity with weak temperature dependence persists down to 100 mK at least. The finite resistivity in the vortex state at T ~= 0 K indicates the realization of quantum vortex liquid assisted by the strong quantum fluctuations instead of the thermal one. A possible origin for separating these liquid states is a remnant vortex melting line at the original position, which is obscured and suppressed by the quantum fluctuations. A non-linear behavior of the in-plane resistivity appears at large current density in only the low resistance state, but not in another vortex liquid state at higher temperature, where the thermal fluctuations are dominant. The transport properties in the low resistance state are well understood in the vortex slush concept with a short-range order of vortices. Thus the low resistance state below 1 K is considered to be a novel quantum vortex slush state.

Deep Near Infrared Observations of the X-ray Emitting Class 0 Protostar Candidates in the Orion Molecular Cloud-3

We obtained near infrared (NIR) imaging with the Subaru Telescope of the class 0 protostar candidates in the Orion Molecular Cloud-3, two of which were discovered to have X-ray emission by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We found strong evidence for the class~0 nature of the X-ray sources. First, our deep K-band image shows no emission brighter than 19.6 mag from both of these X-ray sources. Since class I protostars or class II T Tauri stars should be easily detected in the NIR with this sensitivity, the lack of K-band detection suggests that they are likely much more obscured than class I protostars. Second, our H2 v=1-0 S(1) image shows a bubble-like feature from one of the X-ray class 0 protostar candidates, which reinforces the idea that this is a class 0 protostar. We also discuss the nature of nine NIR sources found in our deep image based on their colors, spatial coincidence with millimeter cores, and the properties of their X-ray counterparts.

Near-Infrared Adaptive Optics Spectroscopy of Binary Brown Dwarf HD 130948B and C

We present near-infrared spectroscopy of low-mass companions in a nearby triple system HD 130948 (Gliese 564, HR 5534). Adaptive optics on the Subaru Telescope allowed spectroscopy of the individual components of the 0".13 binary system. Based on a direct comparison with a series of template spectra, we determined the spectral types of HD 130948B and C to be L4 +- 1. If we take the young age of the primary star into account (0.3-0.8 Gyr), HD 130948B and C most likely are a binary brown dwarf system.

Imaging and Spatially Resolved Spectroscopy of AFGL 2688 in the Thermal Infrared Region

We present ground-based high-resolution (~0".3) imaging of AFGL 2688 at L' (3.8 um) and M'(4.7um). A wealth of structure in the central region is revealed due to less extinction in the thermal infrared. A clear border in the southern lobe at L' corresponds to the edge of the heavily obscured region in visible, indicating there is a dense material surrounding the central region. The images also show a narrow dark lane oriented to 140 deg east of north with the normal at 50 deg. The normal position angle is inconsistent with the optical polar axis (PA = 15 deg), but is aligned to the high-velocity CO components found in the radio wavelength observations. The central star remains invisible at L' and M'. Several clumpy regions in the north lobe dominate in L' and M' luminosity. In particular a pointlike source (peak A) at 0".5 northeast of the center of the nebula exhibits the highest surface brightness with a very red spectral energy distribution (SED). Based on the almost identical SED as adjacent regions, we suggest that the pointlike source is not self-luminous, as was proposed, but is a dense dusty blob reflecting thermal emission from the central star. We also present spatially resolved slit spectroscopy of the bright dusty blobs. An emission feature at 3.4 um as well as at 3.3 um is detected everywhere within our field of view. There is no spatial variation in the infrared emission feature (IEF) throughout the observed area (0".2-1".5, or 240-1800 AU from the central source). The constant flux ratio of the emission feature relative to the continuum is consistent with the view that the blobs are mostly reflecting the light from the central star in the 3 um region.

Magnetic and Electronic Phase Diagram and Superconductivity in the Organic Superconductors k-(BEDT-TTF)2X

The magnetic susceptibility of the organic superconductors $κ$-(h8 or d8-ET)$_{2}$$X$, $X =$ Cu(NCS)$_{2}$ and Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br has been studied. A metallic phase below $T^{*} =$ 37 $\sim$ 38 K for $X =$ Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Br and 46 $\sim$ 50 K for $X =$ Cu(NCS)$_{2}$ has an anisotropic temperature dependence of the susceptibility and the charge transport. Partial charge-density-wave or charge fluctuation is expected to coexist with the metallic phase instead of the large antiferromagnetic fluctuation above $T^{*}$. The phase diagram and the superconductivity of $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$$X$ are discussed in connection with this phase.

Spin-1/2 Kagome Like Lattice in Volborthite Cu3V2O7(OH)2-H2O

A novel cuprate Volborthite, Cu3V2O7(OH)2-2H2O, containing an S-1/2 (Cu 2+ spin) kagome-like lattice is studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and 51 V NMR measurements. Signs for neither long-range order nor spin-gapped singlet ground states are detected down to 1.8 K, in spite of large antiferromagnetic couplings of ~100 K between Cu spins forming a two-dimensional kagome-like network. It is suggested that Volborthite represents a system close to a quantum critical point between classical long-range ordered and quantum disordered phases.

X-ray Properties of Young Stellar Objects in OMC-2 and OMC-3 from the Chandra X-ray Observatory

We report X-ray results of the Chandra observation of Orion Molecular Cloud 2 and 3. A deep exposure of \sim 100 ksec detects \sim 400 X-ray sources in the field of view of the ACIS array, providing one of the largest X-ray catalogs in a star forming region. Coherent studies of the source detection, time variability, and energy spectra are performed. We classify the X-ray sources into class I, class II, and class III+MS based on the J, H, and K-band colors of their near infrared counterparts and discuss the X-ray properties (temperature, absorption, and time variability) along these evolutionary phases.

The optical afterglow and host galaxy of GRB000926

We present the discovery of the Optical Transient (OT) of the long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB000926. The optical transient was detected independently with the Nordic Optical Telescope and at Calar Alto 22.2 hours after the burst. At this time the magnitude of the transient was R = 19.36. The transient faded with a decay slope of about 1.7 during the first two days after which the slope increased abruptly (within a few hours) to about 2.4. The light-curve started to flatten off after about a week indicating the presence of an underlying extended object. This object was detected in a deep image obtained one month after the GRB at R=23.87+-0.15 and consists of several compact knots within about 5 arcsec. One of the knots is spatially coincident with the position of the OT and hence most likely belongs to the host galaxy. Higher resolution imaging is needed to resolve whether all the compact knots belong to the host galaxy or to several independent objects. In a separate paper we present a discussion of the optical spectrum of the OT, and its inferred redshift (Moller et al. in prep.).

Dynamics vs electronic states of vortex core of high-T_c superconductors investigated by high-frequency impedance measurement

Dynamics of vortices reflects the electronic states of quasiparticles in the core. To understand this, we investigated the following three issues. (1) We investigated the complex surface impedance, Zs, of YBa2Cu3Oy as a function of magnetic field, H. The total features were well expressed by the Coffey-Clem model. From the data, we estimated the viscosity and pinning frequency, which were found to be independent of frequency. In particular, the obtained viscosity definitely shows that the core of vortex of YBa2Cu3Oy is moderately clean. This result suggests that new physics will show up, for the physics of quantum moderately clean vortex core is unknown at all. (2) An anomaly found in the surface reactance at the first order transition (FOT) of vortex lattice was investigated in Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy with various doping levels. As a result, the anomaly was found only in the samples exhibiting the FOT. On the other hand, we did not observe the anomaly in YBa2Cu3Oy. These suggest that the anomaly is due to the change in the electronic states of the vortices characteristic of materials with very strong anisotropy. (3) We measured H dependence of both the thermal conductivity κ(H) and Zs(H) in exactly the same pieces of crystal. We could not find any anomaly in Zs(H) even at the onset of the plateau. This result suggests that the origin of the plateau in κ(H) is not a drastic phase transition but is rather gradual crossover.

Subaru Deep Survey I. Near-Infrared Observations

Deep near-infrared images of a blank 2'x2' section of sky near the Galactic north pole taken by Subaru Telescope are presented. The total integration times of the J and K' bands are 12.1 hours and 9.7 hours, resulting in 5-sigma limiting magnitudes of 25.1 and 23.5 mag, respectively. The numbers of sources within these limiting magnitudes found with an automated detection procedure are 385 in the J band and 350 in K'. Based on photometric measurements of these sources, we present number count vs. magnitude relations, color vs. magnitude diagrams, size vs. color relationships, etc. The slope of the galaxy number count plotted against the AB magnitude scale is about 0.23 in the 22 to 26 AB magnitude range of both bands. The spatial number density of galaxies as well as the slopes in the faint-end region given by the Subaru Deep Field (SDF) survey is consistent with those given by HST-NICMOS surveys as expressed on the AB magnitude diagram. Several sources having very large J-K' color are found including a few K' objects without detection at J. In addition, a number of faint Galactic stars are also detected, most of which are assigned to M-subdwarfs, together with a few brown dwarf candidates.

The afterglow, the redshift, and the extreme energetics of the gamma-ray burst 990123

Afterglow, or long-lived emission, has now been detected from about a dozen well-positioned gamma-ray bursts. Distance determinations made by measuring optical emission lines from the host galaxy, or absorption lines in the afterglow spectrum, place the burst sources at significant cosmological distances, with redshifts ranging from ~1--3. The energy required to produce the bright gamma-ray flashes is enormous: up to ~10^{53} erg or 10 percent of the rest mass energy of a neutron star, if the emission is isotropic. Here we present the discovery of the optical afterglow and the redshift of GRB 990123, the brightest well-localized GRB to date. With our measured redshift of >1.6, the inferred isotropic energy release exceeds the rest mass of a neutron star thereby challenging current theoretical models for the origin of GRBs. We argue that the optical and IR afterglow measurements reported here may provide the first observational evidence of beaming in a GRB, thereby reducing the required energetics to a level where stellar death models are still tenable.
