Re-appearance of antiferromagnetic ordering with Zn and Ni substitution in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4

The effects of nonmagnetic Zn and magnetic Ni substitution for Cu site on magnetism are studied by measurements of uniform magnetic susceptibility for lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCu_{1-z}M_zO_4 (M=Zn or Ni) polycrystalline samples. For the parent x=0, Zn doping suppresses the Néel temperature T_N whereas Ni doping hardly changes T_N up to z=0.3. For the lightly doped samples with T_N~0, the Ni doping recovers T_N. For the superconducting samples, the Ni doping induces the superconductivity-to-antiferromagnetic transition (or crossover). All the heavily Ni doped samples indicate a spin glass behavior at \~15 K.

Improved Irreversibility Behaviour and Critical Current Density in MgB2-Diamond Nanocomposites

MgB2-diamond nanocomposite superconductors have been synthesized by addition of nano-diamond powder. Microstructural analysis shows that the nanocomposite superconductor consists of tightly-packed MgB2 nano-grains (~50-100 nm) with highly-dispersed and uniformly-distributed diamond nanoparticles (~10-20 nm) inside the grains. The Jc-H and Hiir-T characteristics have been significantly improved in this MgB2-diamond nanocomposite, compared to MgB2 bulk materials prepared by other techniques. Also, the Jc value of 1x104 A/cm2 at 20 K and 4 T and the Hirr value of 6.4 T at 20 K have been achieved

Doping Effect of Nano-Diamond on Superconductivity and Flux Pinning in MgB2

Doping effect of diamond nanoparticles on the superconducting properties of MgB2 bulk material has been studied. It is found that the superconducting transition temperature Tc of MgB2 is suppressed by the diamond-doping, however, the irreversibility field Hirr and the critical current density Jc are systematically enhanced. Microstructural analysis shows that the diamond-doped MgB2 superconductor consists of tightly-packed MgB2 nano-grains (~50-100 nm) with highly-dispersed and uniformly-distributed diamond nanoparticles (~10-20 nm) inside the grains. High density of dislocations and diamond nanoparticles may take the responsibility for the enhanced flux pinning in the diamond-doped MgB2.

Zn-Neighbor Cu NQR in Zn-Substituted YBa2Cu3O7-d and YBa2Cu4O8

We studied local electronic states near Zn in optimally doped YBa$_2$(Cu$_{1-x}$Zn_x)$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and underdoped YBa$_2$(Cu$_{1-x}$Zn_x)$_4$O$_8$ via satellite signals of plane-site Cu(2) nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectra. From the relative intensity of Cu NQR spectra, the satellite signals are assigned to Zn-neighbor Cu NQR lines. The Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time of the satellite signal is shorter than that of the main signal, which indicates that the magnetic correlation is locally enhanced near Zn both for the underdoped and the optimally doped systems. The pure YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ is a stoichiometric, homogenous, underdoped electronic system; nevertheless, the Zn-induced inhomogeneous magnetic response in the CuO$_2$ plane is more marked than that of the optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$.

Ni-substituted sites and the effect on Cu electron spin dynamics of YBa2Cu{3-x}NixO{7-δ}

We report Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance experiment on magnetic impurity Ni-substituted YBa$_2$Cu$_{3-x}$Ni$_x$O$_{7-δ}$. The distribution of Ni-substituted sites and its effect on the Cu electron spin dynamics are investigated. Two samples with the same Ni concentration $x$=0.10 and nearly the same oxygen content but different $T_c$'s were prepared: One is an as-synthesized sample (7-$δ$=6.93) in air ($T_c$$\approx 80 K$), and the other is a quenched one (7-$δ$=6.92) in a reduced oxygen atmosphere ($T_c$$\approx 70 K$). The plane-site $^{63}$Cu(2) nuclear spin-lattice relaxation for the quenched sample was faster than that for the as-synthesized sample, in contrast to the $^{63}$Cu(1) relaxation that was faster for the as-synthesized sample. This indicates that the density of plane-site Ni(2) is higher in the quenched sample, contrary to the chain-site Ni(1) density which is lower in the quenched sample. From the analysis in terms of the Ni-induced nuclear spin-lattice relaxation, we suggest that the primary origin of suppression of $T_c$ is associated with nonmagnetic depairing effect of the plane-site Ni(2).

Anisotropic resistivity and Hall effect in MgB2 single crystals

We report resistivity and the Hall effect measurements in the normal and superconducting states of MgB2 single crystal. The resistivity has been found to be anisotropic with slightly temperature dependent resistivity ratio of about 3.5. The Hall constant, with a magnetic field parallel to the Mg and B sheets is negative in contrast to the hole-like Hall response with a field directed along the c-axis indicating presence of both types of charge carriers and, thus, multi-band electronic structure of MgB2. The Hall effect in the mixed state shows no sign change anomaly reproducing the Hall effect behavior in clean limit type-II superconductors.

Anisotropic Superconducting Properties of MgB2 Single Crystals

In-plane electrical transport properties of MgB2 single crystals grown under high pressure of 4-6 GPa and temperature of 1400-1700oC in Mg-B-N system have been measured. For all specimens we found sharp superconducting transition around 38.1-38.3K with transition width within 0.2-0.3K. Estimated resistivity value at 40K is about 1 mkOhmcm and resistivity ratio R(273K)/R(40K) of about 4.9. Results of measurements in magnetic field up to 5.5T perpendicular to Mg and B planes and up to 9T in parallel orientation show temperature dependent anisotropy of the upper critical field with anisotropy ratio increasing from 2.2 close to Tc up to about 3 below 30K. Strong deviation of the angular dependence of Hc2 from anisotropic mass model has been also found.

Anisotropic superconducting properties of MgB2 single crystals probed by in-plane electrical transport measurements

We report on study of the electronic anisotropy of the newly discovered MgB2 superconductor using the in-plane resistivity measurements in magnetic field applied perpendicular and parallel to Mg and B planes of MgB2 single crystals. The results show temperature dependent anisotropy of the upper critical field with anisotropy ratio increasing from 2.2 close to Tc up to about 3 below 30K. Our estimation of the in-plane and out-of-plane coherence length of about 68A and 23A and electronic mean-free path 240A and 60A respectively indicates MgB2 single crystal as approaching clean limit type-II superconductor.

Zn-doping dependence of the wipeout region around Zn in YBa2(Cu1-xZnx)4O8

We estimated the spread of the magnetically enhanced regions (wipeout regions) around Zn ions in high-Tc superconductors YBa2(Cu1-xZnx)4O8 (x=0, 0.005, 0.01, and 0.022) at T=4.2 K, via the planar 63Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation study with Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spin-echo technique. From the analysis of nonexponential planar Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation curves, we found that the wipeout region per a Zn ion shrinks with Zn doping in the superconducting state. The shrinkage is associated with suppression of the host antiferromagnetic spin correlation, as a result from a dilution effect on the magnetic CuO2 network.

Cu Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Study of Site-Disorder and Chemical Pressure Effects on Y(Ba1-xSrx)2Cu4O8

We report a zero-field Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) study on the effects of nonmagnetic Sr substitution for high-Tc superconductors, Y(Ba1-xSrx)2Cu4O8 (Tc=82-80 K for x=0-0.4), using a spin-echo technique. The site-disordering and chemical pressure effects associated with doping Sr were observed in the broadened, shifted Cu NQR spectra. Nevertheless, the site disorder did not significantly affect the homogeneity of Cu electron spin dynamics, in contrast to the in-plane impurity. The peak shift of Cu NQR spectrum due to Sr was different between the chain- and the plane-Cu sites, more remarkably than those under a hydrostatic physical pressure, suggesting anisotropic or nonuniform local structural strains. The small decrease of Tc due to Sr can be traced back to either a cancellation effect on Tc between the disorder and the pressure, or an anisotropic or nonuniform chemical pressure effect on Tc.

Cu Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance Study of the Spin-Peierls Compound Cu1-xMgxGeO3: A Possibility of Precursory Dimerization

We report on a zero-field 63Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) study of nonmagnetic Mg impurity substituted Cu1-xMgxGeO3 (single crystals; the spin-Peierls transition temperature Tsp~14, 13.5, and 11 K for x=0, 0.0043, and 0.020) in a temperature range from 4.2 K to 250 K. We found that below T*~77 K, Cu NQR spectra are broadened and nonexponential Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation increases for undoped and more remarkably for Mg-doped samples. The results indicate that random lattice distortion and impurity-induced spins appear below T*, which we associate with a precursor of the spin-Peierls transition. Conventional magnetic critical slowing down does not appear down to 4.2 K below Tsp.

Cu NQR study of host and guest spin dynamics in impurity-doped YBa2Cu4O8

We present the planar 63Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation study of impurity-doped YBa2(Cu1-xMx)4O8 (M=Ni, Zn) at T=4.2-300 K with Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spin-echo technique. In the light of an impurity-induced NQR relaxation theory, we estimated the host Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time (T1)HOST, the impurity-induced Cu nuclear spin-lattice relaxation time (t1), and the wipeout region around the impurity in the superconducting state. The pseudo spin-gap behavior of the host Cu antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation above Tc is not readily removed by a small amount of the impurity. The Zn-induced non-Korringa behavior of (T1)HOST below Tc is in sharp contrast to the doping effect of the magnetic impurity Ni.

Spin Dynamics near the Superconductor-to-Insulator Transition in Impurity-Doped YBa2Cu4O8

We studied low-frequency spin dynamics near the impurity-induced superconductor-to-insulator transition for underdoped high-Tc superconductor YBa2(Cu1-xMx)4O8 (M=Ni, Zn) using the Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spin-echo technique. We observed remarkable suppression of the normal-state pseudo spin-gap and a loss of Cu NQR spectrum intensity at low temperatures around the critical impurity concentration.

On the Doping and Temperature Dependence of the Mass Enhancement Observed in the Cuprate Bi2212

High-resolution photoemission is used to study the electronic structure of the cuprate superconductor, Bi2212, as a function of hole doping and temperature. A kink observed in the band dispersion in the nodal direction in the superconducting state is associated with coupling to a resonant mode observed in neutron scattering. From the measured real part of the self energy it is possible to extract a coupling constant which is largest in the underdoped regime, then decreasing continuously into the overdoped regime.

Resonant Spin Excitation in an Overdoped High Temperature Superconductor

An inelastic neutron scattering study of overdoped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} $ (T_c = 83 K) has revealed a resonant spin excitation in the superconducting state. The mode energy is E_res=38 meV, significantly lower than in optimally doped Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} (T_c = 91 K, E_ res =43 meV). This observation, which indicates a constant ratio E_res /k_B T_c \sim 5.4, helps resolve a long-standing controversy about the origin of the resonant spin excitation in high-temperature superconductors.

Temperature Dependent Scattering Rates at the Fermi Surface of Optimally Doped Bi 2212

For optimally doped Bi 2212, scattering rates in the normal state are found to have a linear temperature dependence over most of the Fermi surface. In the immediate vicinity of the (1,0) point, the scattering rates are nearly constant in the normal state, consistent with models in which scattering at this point determines the c-axis transport. In the superconducting state, the scattering rates away from the nodal direction appear to level off and become temperature-independent.

Photoemission Studies on Bi2Sr2CaCuZnO - Electronic Structure Evolution and Temperature Dependence

An angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy study was conducted on BiSrCaCuZnO. A small amount of Zn substitution for Cu almost completely suppresses the otherwise sharp spectral peak along the (0,0) to (pi,pi) direction in BiSrCaCuZnO, while superconductivity with Tc as high as 83K survives. This behavior contrasts markedly from that seen in cases where the impurities are located off the CuO plane, as well as when the CuO planes are underdoped. This effect is also accompanied by changes of low energy excitations at (pi,0), near the anti-node position of the d-wave pairing state. With Zn doping the size of the superconducting gap is significantly suppressed, the width of the quasiparticle peak in the superconducting state becomes wider, and the dip at higher binding energy is diminished. In addition, enhanced temperature induced spectral changes also occur. We show intriguing systematic lineshape changes with temperature that persist to a very high energy scale - a result consistent with the idea that Zn enhances the local charge inhomogeneity.
