Structure and glass-forming ability of simulated Ni-Zr alloys

Binary Cu-Zr system is a representative bulk glassformer demonstrating high glass forming ability due to pronounced icosahedral local ordering. From the first glance, Ni-Zr system is the most natural object to expect the same behavior because nickel and copper are neighbours in the periodic table and have similar physicochemical properties. However, doing molecular dynamics simulations of $\rm Ni_αZr_{1-α}$ alloys described by embedded atom model potential, we observe different behaviour. We conclude that the Ni-Zr system has the same glass-forming ability as an additive binary Lennard-Jones mixture without any chemical interaction. The structural analysis reveals that icosahedral ordering in Ni-Zr alloys is much less pronounced than that in the Cu-Zr ones. We suggest that lack of icosahedral ordering due to peculiarities of interatomic interactions is the reason of relatively poor glass-forming ability of Ni-Zr system.

Quantum phase transitions and the degree of nonidentity in the system with two different species of vector bosons

We address the system with two species of vector bosons in an optical lattice. In addition to the the standard parameters characterizing such a system, we are dealing here with the "degree of atomic nonidentity", manifesting itself in the difference of tunneling amplitudes and on-site Coulomb interactions. We obtain a cascade of quantum phase transitions occurring with the increase in the degree of atomic nonidentity. In particular, we show that the phase diagram for strongly distinct atoms is qualitatively different from that for (nearly) identical atoms considered earlier. The resulting phase diagrams evolve from the images similar to the "J. Miró-like paintings" to "K. Malewicz-like" ones.

Magnetic phase diagram and quantum phase transitions in a two-species boson model

We analyze the possible types of ordering in a boson--fermion model. The Hamiltonian is inherently related to the Bose--Hubbard model for vector two-species bosons in optical lattices. We show that such model can be reduced to the Kugel--Khomskii type spin--pseudospin model, but in contrast to the usual version of the latter model, we are dealing here with the case of spin $S=1$ and pseudospin $1/2$. We show that the interplay of spin and pseudospin degrees of freedom leads to a rather nontrivial magnetic phase diagram including the spin-nematic configurations. Tuning the spin-channel interaction parameter $U_s$ gives rise to quantum phase transitions. We find that the ground state of the system always has the pseudospin domain structure. On the other hand, the sign change of $U_s$ switches the spin arrangement of the ground state within domains from ferro- to aniferromagnetic one. Finally, we revisit the spin (pseudospin)-1/2 Kugel--Khomskii model and see the inverse picture of phase transitions.

Full replica symmetry breaking in p-spin-glass-like systems

It is shown that continuously changing the effective number of interacting particles in p-spin-glass-like model allows to describe the transition from the full replica symmetry breaking glass solution to stable first replica symmetry breaking glass solution in the case of non-reflective symmetry diagonal operators used instead of Ising spins. As an example, axial quadrupole moments in place of Ising spins are considered and the boundary value $p_{c_{1}}\cong 2.5$ is found.

Simulated Cu-Zr glassy alloys: the impact of composition on icosahedral order

The structural properties of the simulated $\rm Cu_αZr_{1-α}$ glassy alloys are studied in the wide range of the copper concentration $α$ to clarify the impact of the composition on the number density of the icosahedral clusters. Both bond orientational order parameters and Voronoi tessellation methods are used to identify these clusters. Our analysis shows that abundance of the icosahedral clusters and the chemical composition of these clusters are essentially non monotonic versus $α$ and demonstrate local extrema. That qualitatively explains the existence of pinpoint compositions of high glass-forming ability observing in Cu-Zr alloys. Finally, it has been shown that Voronoi method overestimates drastically the abundance of the icosahedral clusters in comparison with the bond orientational order parameters one.

Cooling rate dependence of simulated ${\rm Cu_{64.5}Zr_{35.5}}$ metallic glass structure

Using molecular dynamics simulations with embedded atom model potential, we study structural evolution of ${\rm Cu_{64.5}Zr_{35.5}}$ alloy during the cooling in a wide range of cooling rates $γ\in(1.5\cdot 10^{9},10^{13})$ K/s. Investigating short- and medium-range order, we show that structure of ${\rm Cu_{64.5}Zr_{35.5}}$ metallic glass essentially depends on cooling rate. In particular, a decrease of the cooling rate leads to a increase of abundances of both the icosahedral-like clusters and Frank-Kasper Z16 polyhedra. The amounts of these clusters in the glassy state drastically increase at the $γ_{\rm min}=1.5\cdot 10^{9}$ K/s. Analysing the structure of the glass at $γ_{\rm min}$, we observe the formation of nano-sized crystalline grain of ${\rm Cu_2Zr}$ intermetallic compound with the structure of ${\rm Cu_2Mg}$ Laves phase. The structure of this compound is isomorphous with that for ${\rm Cu_5Zr}$ intermetallic compound. Both crystal lattices consist of two type of clusters: Cu-centered 13-atom icosahedral-like cluster and Zr-centered 17-atom Frank-Kasper polyhedron Z16. That suggests the same structural motifs for the metallic glass and intermetallic compounds and explains the drastic increase of the abundances of these clusters observed at $γ_{\rm min}$.

Self-consistent Description of Graphene Quantum Amplifier

High level of dissipation in normal metals makes challenging development of active and passive plasmonic devices. One possible solution to this problem is to use alternative materials. Graphene is a good candidate for plasmonics in near infrared (IR) region. In this paper we develop quantum theory of a graphene plasmon generator. We account for the first time quantum correlations and dissipation effects that allows describing such regimes of quantum plasmonic amplifier as surface plasmon emitting diode and surface plasmon amplifier by stimulated emission of radiation. Switching between these generation types is possible in situ with variance of graphene Fermi-level or gain transition frequency. We provide explicit expressions for dissipation and interaction constants through material parameters and find the generation spectrum and correlation function of second order which predicts laser statistics.

Interplay of localisation and competing interaction channels: cascade of quantum phase transitions

We investigate the interplay of localization, interactions and (pseudo)spin degrees of freedom on quantum states of particles on the lattice. Our results show that breaking the paradigm density-density interaction $U_0\gg$ (pseudo)spin-(pseudo)spin interaction $U_s$ will drive the sequence of quantum phase transitions (QPT), where (pseudo)spin state and particle ordering, in case of several particle species, on the lattice are strongly changed. QPT driven by competing interactions, $|U_s|\sim U_0$, manifest itself in singularities of effective exchange integrals. $|U_s|\sim U_0$ implies a frustration when the interactions standing alone drive the system to different phases. Even at $U_s=0$, there is typically a QPT induced by $U_s$ sign change. Vector cold atoms, Fermions or Bosons, on optical lattices are the state-of-the-art realization of our system where $U_s$ is tunable \textit{in situ}.

Pade spectroscopy of structural correlation functions: application to liquid gallium

We propose the new method of fluid structure investigation which is based on numerical analytical continuation of structural correlation functions with Pade approximants. The method particularly allows extracting hidden structural features of non-ordered condensed matter systems from experimental diffraction data. The method has been applied to investigating the local order of liquid gallium which has non-trivial stricture in both the liquid and solid states. Processing the correlation functions obtained from molecular dynamic simulations, we show the method proposed reveals non-trivial structural features of liquid gallium such as the spectrum of length-scales and the existence of different types of local clusters in the liquid.

Conductance of a SET with a retarded dielectric layer in the gate capacitor

We study conductance of a single electron transistor (SET) with a ferroelectric (or dielectric) layer placed in the gate capacitor. We assume that ferroelectric (FE) has a retarded response with arbitrary relaxation time. We show that in the case of "fast" but still retarded response of the FE (dielectric) layer an additional contribution to the Coulomb blockade effect appears leading to the suppression of the SET conductance. We take into account fluctuations of the FE (dielectric) polarization using Monte-Carlo simulations. For "fast" FE these fluctuations partially suppress the additional Coulomb blockade effect. Using Monte-Carlo simulations we study the transition from "fast" to "slow" FE. For high temperatures the peak value of the SET conductance is almost independent of the FE relaxation time. For temperatures close to the FE Curie temperature the conductance peak value non-monotonically depends on the FE relaxation time. A maximum appears when the FE relaxation time is of the order of the SET discharging time. Below the Curie point the conductance peak value decreases with increasing the FE relaxation time. The conductance shows the hysteresis behavior for any FE relaxation time at temperatures below the FE transition point. We show that conductance hysteresis is robust against FE internal fluctuations.

Self-assembly of the decagonal quasicrystalline order in simple three-dimensional systems

For a three dimensional system we answer two questions, how simple a particle system might be to show the quasicrystal order and, what system features are the most important for quasicrystal formation? One-component system of particles with isotropic pair interaction is one of the simplest ones. We show that such system may be driven to three-dimensional decagonal (10-fold) quasicrystalline state just by purely repulsive, isotropic and monotonic interaction pair potential with two characteristic length scales; no attraction is needed. The second question we answer defining universal (nearly independent from the shape of the pair potential) effective integral parameters related to the first peak of the radial distribution function. The universality is illustrated by demonstrating the quasicrystalline order for a number of particle systems with absolutely different interaction potentials, both purely repulsive and attractive, but with the same effective integral parameters. Simple models like we study qualitatively describe effective interaction in molecular liquids, soft matter systems and metallic alloys for which quasicrystals have been experimentally observed.

Noisy metamolecule: strong narrowing of fluorescence line

We consider metamolecule consisting of bosonic mode correlated with the two-level system: it can be, for example, plasmonic mode interacting with the quantum dot. We focus on the parameter range where all the correlations are strong and of the same order: interaction between bosonic mode correlated with the two-level system, external coherent drive and dissipation. Quantum Monte-Carlo simulations show a fluorescence of this system at dissipation larger than the driving amplitude and strong (by the order of magnitude) narrowing of its spectral line. This effect may be related to kind of a quantum stochastic resonance. We show that the fluorescence corresponds to finite domain over the coherent drive with sharp lower threshold and there is splitting of the Wigner function.

Singularity band of velocity auto correlation function of Lennard-Jones fluid in complex $ω$-plain

It is well known from the quantum theory of strongly correlated systems that poles (or more subtle singularities) of dynamic correlation functions in complex plane usually correspond to the collective or localized modes. Here we address singularities of velocity autocorrelation function $Z$ in complex $ω$-plain for the one-component particle system with isotropic pair potential. We have found that naive few poles picture fails to describe analytical structure of $Z(ω)$ of Lennard-Jones particle system in complex plain. Instead of few isolated poles we see the singularity manifold of $Z(ω)$ forming branch cuts that suggests Lennard-Jones velocity autocorrelation function is a multiple-valued function of complex frequency. The brunch cuts are separated from the real axis by the well-defined "gap". The gap edges extend approximately parallel to the real frequency axis. The singularity structure is very stable under increase of the temperature; we have found its trace at temperatures even several orders of magnitude higher than the melting point. Our working hypothesis that the branch cut origin is related to the "interference" in $Z$ of one-particle kinetics and collective hydrodynamic motion.

Competition of magneto-dipole, anisotropy and exchange interactions in composite multiferroics

We study the competition of magneto-dipole, anisotropy and exchange interactions in composite three dimensional multiferroics. Using Monte Carlo simulations we show that magneto-dipole interaction does not suppress the ferromagnetic state caused by the interaction of the ferroelectric matrix and magnetic subsystem. However, the presence of magneto-dipole interaction influences the order-disorder transition: depending on the strength of magneto-dipole interaction the transition from the ferromagnetic to the superparamagnetic state is accompanied either by creation of vortices or domains of opposite magnetization. We show that the temperature hysteresis loop occurs due to non-monotonic behavior of exchange interaction versus temperature. The origin of this hysteresis is related to the presence of stable magnetic domains which are robust against thermal fluctuations.

Electric field control of magnetic properties and magneto-transport in composite multiferroics

We study magnetic state and electron transport properties of composite multiferroic system consisting of a granular ferromagnetic thin film placed above the ferroelectric substrate. Ferroelectricity and magnetism in this case are coupled by the long-range Coulomb interaction. We show that magnetic state and magneto-transport strongly depend on temperature, external electric field, and electric polarization of the substrate. Ferromagnetic order exists at finite temperature range around ferroelectric Curie point. Outside the region the film is in the superparamagnetic state. We demonstrate that magnetic phase transition can be driven by an electric field and magneto-resistance effect has two maxima associated with two magnetic phase transitions appearing in the vicinity of the ferroelectric phase transition. We show that positions of these maxima can be shifted by the external electric field and that the magnitude of the magneto-resistance effect depends on the mutual orientation of external electric field and polarization of the substrate.

Coupling of (ferro)electricity and magnetism through Coulomb blockade in Composite Multiferroics

Composite multiferroics are materials exhibiting the interplay of ferroelectricity, magnetism, and strong electron correlations. Typical example --- magnetic nano grains embedded in a ferroelectric matrix. Coupling of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic degrees of freedom in these materials is due to the influence of ferroelectric matrix on the exchange coupling constant via screening of the intragrain and intergrain Coulomb interaction. Cooling typical magnetic materials the ordered state appears at lower temperatures than the disordered state. We show that in composite multiferroics the ordered magnetic phase may appear at higher temperatures than the magnetically disordered phase. In non-magnetic materials such a behavior is known as inverse phase transition.

Proximity coupling of granular film with ferroelectric substrate and giant electro-resistance effect

We study electron transport in granular film placed above the ferroelectric substrate. We show that the conductivity of granular film strongly depends on the ferroelectric state due to screening effects which modify the Coulomb blockade in granular film. In particular, the electric current in granular film is controlled by the direction of ferroelectric polarization. We show that the ferroelectric/granular film system has a large electro-resistance effect. This effect can be utilized in memory and electric field sensor applications.

Anomalous electrical conductivity in rapidly crystallized Cu${}_{50-x}$Zr${}_{x}$ (x = 50 - 66.6) alloys

Cu${}_{50-x}$Zr${}_{x}$ (x = 50, 54, 60 and 66.6) polycrystalline alloys were prepared by arc-melting. The crystal structure of the ingots has been examined by X-ray diffraction. Non-equilibrium martensitic phases with monoclinic structure were detected in all the alloys except Cu${}_{33.4}$Zr${}_{66.6}$. Temperature dependencies of electrical resistivity in the temperature range of T = 4 - 300 K have been measured as well as room temperature values of Hall coefficients and thermal conductivity. Electrical resistivity demonstrates anomalous behavior. At the temperatures lower than 20 K, their temperature dependencies are non-monotonous with pronounced minima. At elevated temperatures they have sufficiently non-linear character which cannot be described within framework of the standard Bloch--Grüneisen model. We propose generalized Bloch--Grüneisen model with variable Debye temperature which describes experimental resistivity dependencies with high accuracy. We found that both the electrical resistivity and the Hall coefficients reveal metallic-type conductivity in the Cu-Zr alloys. The estimated values of both the charge carrier mobility and the phonon contribution to thermal and electric conductivity indicate the strong lattice defects and structure disorder.
