Single electron tunneling with "slow" insulators

Usual paradigm in the theory of electron transport is related to the fact that the dielectric permittivity of the insulator is assumed to be constant, no time dispersion. We take into account the "slow" polarization dynamics of the dielectric layers in the tunnel barriers in the fluctuating electric fields induced by single-electron tunneling events and study transport in the single electron transistor (SET). Here "slow" dielectric implies slow compared to the characteristic time scales of the SET charging-discharging effects. We show that for strong enough polarizability, such that the induced charge on the island is comparable with the elementary charge, the transport properties of the SET substantially deviate from the known results of transport theory of SET. In particular, the coulomb blockade is more pronounced at finite temperature, the conductance peaks change their shape and the current-voltage characteristics show the memory-effect (hysteresis). However, in contrast to SETs with ferroelectric tunnel junctions, here the periodicity of the conductance in the gate voltage is not broken, instead the period strongly depends on the polarizability of the gate-dielectric. We uncover the fine structure of the hysteresis-effect where the "large" hysteresis loop may include a number of "smaller" loops. Also we predict the memory effect in the current-voltage characteristics $I(V)$, with $I(V)\neq -I(-V)$.

Memory effect in ferroelectric single electron transistor: violation of conductance periodicity in the gate voltage

The fundamental property of most single-electron devices with quasicontinuous quasiparticle spectrum on the island is the periodicity of their transport characteristics in the gate voltage. This property is robust even with respect to placing the ferroelectric insulators in the source and drain tunnel junctions. We show that placing the ferroelectric inside the gate capacitance breaks this periodicity. The current-voltage characteristics of this SET strongly depends on the ferroelectric polarization and shows the giant memory-effect even for negligible ferroelectric hysteresis making this device promising for memory applications.

Phenomenological theory of magneto-electric coupling in granular multiferroics

We study coupling between the ferroelectric polarization and magnetization of granular ferromagnetic film using a phenomenological model of combined multiferroic system consisting of granular ferromagnetic film placed above the ferroelectric (FE) layer. The coupling is due to screening of Coulomb interaction in the granular film by the FE layer. Below the FE Curie temperature the magnetization has hysteresis as a function of electric field. Below the magnetic ordering temperature the polarization has hysteresis as a function of magnetic field. We study the magneto-electric coupling for weak and strong spatial dispersion of the FE layer. The effect of mutual influence decreases with increasing the spatial dispersion of the FE layer. For weak dispersion the strongest coupling occurs in the vicinity of the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition. For strong dispersion the situation is the opposite. We study the magneto-electric coupling as a function of distance between the FE layer and the granular film. For large distances the coupling decays exponentially due to the exponential decrease of electric field produced by the oscillating charges in the granular ferromagnetic film.

Lacunas in the optical force induced by quantum fluctuations of quasicontinuum of multipole plasmons

We investigate the force between plasmonic nanoparticle and highly excited two-level system (molecule). Usually van der Waals force between nanoscale electrically neutral systems is monotonic and attractive at moderate and larger distances and repulsive at small distances. In our system, the van der Waals force acting on molecule has optical nature. At moderate distances it is attractive as usual but its strength highly increases in a narrow distance ranges ("lacunas"). We show that quantum fluctuations of (quasi)continuum of multipole plasmons of high, nearly infinite degree altogether form effective environment and determine the interaction force while their spectral peculiarities stand behind the large and narrow lacunas in force. We solve exactly the Hamiltonian problem and discuss the role of the dissipation.

Hydrodynamic anomalies in supercritical fluid

Using the molecular dynamics simulations we investigate properties of velocity autocorrelation function of Lennard-Jones fluid at long and intermediate time scales in wide ranges of temperature and density. We show that the amplitudes of the leading and subleading VAF time asymptotes, $a_1$ and $a_2$, show essentially non monotonous temperature and density dependence. There are two lines on temperature-density plain corresponding to maxima of $a_1$ ($a_2$) along isochors and isotherms situated in the supercritical fluid (hydrodynamic anomalies). These lines give insight into the stages of the fluid evolution into gas.

Single Flux Transistor: the controllable interplay of Coherent Quantum Phase Slip and Flux quantization

The Single Cooper Pair Josephson Transistor is a device that exhibits at the same time charge quantization and phase coherence. Coherent quantum phase slip phenomenon is "dual" the Josephson phase coherence while the charge quantization is dual to the flux quantization. We present the experimental demonstration and the theoretical description of a new superconducting device - Single Flux Transistor, which is dual to the Single Cooper Pair Transistor. Our transport measurements show the periodic modulation of the critical voltage by the external magnetic field. The obtained current-voltage characteristics show the hysteretic behavior, which we attribute to the intrinsic self-heating of charge carriers.

Effective orbital ordering in multiwell optical lattices with fermionic atoms

We consider the behavior of Fermi atoms on optical superlattices with two-well structure of each node. Fermions on such lattices serve as an analog simulator of Fermi type Hamiltonian. We derive a mapping between fermion quantum ordering in the optical superlattices and the spin-orbital physics developed for degenerate $d$-electron compounds. The appropriate effective spin-orbital model appears to be the modification of the Kugel-Khomskii Hamiltonian. We show how different ground states of this Hamiltonian correspond to particular spin-pseudospin arrangement patterns of fermions on the lattice. The dependence of fermion arrangement on phases of complex hopping amplitudes is illustrated.

Generalized Sherrington--Kirkpatrick-glass without reflection symmetry

We investigate generalized Sherrington--Kirkpatrick glassy systems without reflection symmetry. In the neighbourhood of the transition temperature we in general uncover the structure of the glass state building the full-replica-symmetry breaking solution. Physical example of explicitly constructed solution is given.

Interplay of ferroelectricity and single electron tunneling

We investigate the interplay of ferroelectricity and quantum electron transport at the nanoscale in the regime of Coulomb blockade. Ferroelectric polarization in this case is no longer the external parameter but should be self-consistently calculated along with electron hopping probabilities leading to new physical transport phenomena studying in this paper. These phenomena appear mostly due to effective screening of a grain electric field by ferroelectric environment rather than due to polarization dependent tunneling probabilities. At small bias voltages polarization can be switched by a single excess electron in the grain. In this case transport properties of SET exhibit the instability (memory effect).

Interplay of Coulomb Blockade and Ferroelectricity in Nano-Granular Materials

We study electron transport properties of composite ferroelectrics --- materials consisting of metallic grains embedded in a ferroelectric matrix. In particular, we calculate the conductivity in a wide range of temperatures and electric fields, showing pronounced hysteretic behavior. In weak fields, electron cotunneling is the main transport mechanism. In this case, we show that the ferroelectric matrix strongly influences the transport properties through two effects: i) the dependence of the Coulomb gap on the dielectric permittivity of the ferroelectric matrix, which in turn is controlled by temperature and external field; and ii) the dependence of the tunneling matrix elements on the electric polarization of the ferroelectric matrix, which can be tuned by temperature and applied electric field as well. In the case of strong electric fields, the Coulomb gap is suppressed and only the second mechanism is important. Our results are important for i) thermometers for precise temperature measurements and ii) ferrroelectric memristors.

Continuous and discontinuous transitions in generalized p-spin glass models

We investigate the generalized p-spin models that contain arbitrary diagonal operators U with no reflection symmetry. We derive general equations that give an opportunity to uncover the behavior of the system near the glass transition at different (continuous) p. The quadrupole glass with J=1 is considered as an illustrating example. It is shown that the crossover from continuous to discontinuous glass transition to one-step replica breaking solution takes place at p=3.3 for this model. For p <2+Δp, where Δp= 0.5 is a finite value, stable 1RSB-solution disappears. This behaviour is strongly different from that of the p-spin Ising glass model.

Two stage order-disorder transformation in simple monatomic supercritical fluid: superstable tetrahedral local order

The local order units of dense simple liquid are typically three dimensional (close packed) clusters: hcp, fcc and icosahedrons. We show that the fluid demonstrates the superstable tetrahedral local order up to temperatures several orders of magnitude higher than the melting temperature and down to critical density. While the solid-like local order (hcp, fcc) disappears in the fluid at much lower temperatures and far above critical density. We conclude that the supercritical fluid shows the temperature (density) driven two stage "melting" of the three dimensional local order. We also find that the structure relaxation times in the supercritical fluid are much larger than ones estimated for weakly interactive gas even far above the melting line.

Universality and quantization of the power to heat ratio in nano-granular systems

We study heating and dissipation effects in granular nanosystems in the regime of weak coupling between the grains. We focus on the cotunneling regime and solve the heat-dissipation problem in an array of grains exactly. We show that the power to heat ratio has a universal quantized value, which is geometrically protected: it depends only on the number of grains.

Nanolaser in the selfgenerated nonequilibrium environment: quantum fluctuations and entanglement

We investigate the dynamics of the spaser-based nanolaser in the strong incoherent pumping regime in the quantum limit when the photon number is the order of unity. We consider the situation where the newly irradiated photon finds itself in the cloud of earlier irradiated photons that are not thermalized. As the result the entanglement of nanoparticle with quantum dot degrees of freedom in the nanolaser and the lasing intensity increases several times. In fact the nonthermal bath effectively makes the nanolaser "more quantum" and master equation for the nanolaser density matrix nonlinear and selfconsistent.

Analytical Description of the Quantum-Mesoscopic-Classical Transition in Systems with Quasi-Discrete Environment

We investigate dynamic properties of inhomogeneous nano-materials, which appear in analytical descriptions typically as series of $δ$-functions with corresponding Gibbs weights. We focus on observables relevant for transport theories of Josephson junction arrays and granular systems near the superconductor -- insulator transition. Furthermore, our description applies to the theory of tunnel junctions exchanging energy with a "bath", the latter having a discrete spectrum. Using the matrix theta-function formalism we find an analytical expression for the transport characteristics capturing the complete temperature driven transition from the quantum to the classical regime.

Superfragile glassy dynamics of onecomponent system with isotropic potential: competition of diffusion and frustration

We investigate glassy dynamical properties of one component three-dimensional system of particles interacting via pair repulsive potential by the molecular dynamic simulation in the wide region of densities. The glass state is superfragile and it has high glassforming ability. The glass transition temperature Tg has pronounced minimum at densities where the frustration is maximal.

Orientational glass: full replica symmetry breaking in generalized spin glass-like models without reflection symmetry

We investigate near the point of glass transition the expansion of the free energy corresponding to the generalized Sherrington--Kirkpatrick model with arbitrary diagonal operators U standing instead of Ising spins. We focus on the case when U is an operator with broken reflection symmetry. Such a consideration is important for understanding the behavior of spin-glass-like phases in a number of real physical systems, mainly in orientational glasses in mixed molecular crystals which present just the case. We build explicitly a full replica symmetry breaking (FRSB) solution of the equations for the orientational glass order parameters when the non-symmetric part of U is small. This particular result presents a counterexample in the context of usually adopted conjecture of the absence of FRSB solution in systems with no reflection symmetry.

Interplay of charge and heat transport in a nano-junction in the out-of-equilibrium cotunneling regime

We study the charge transport and the heat transfer through a nano-junction composed of a small metallic grain weakly coupled to two metallic leads. We focus on the cotunneling regime out-of-equilibrium, where the bias voltage and the temperature gradient between the leads strongly drive electron and phonon degrees of freedom in the grain that in turn have a strong feedback on the transport through the grain. We derive and solve coupled kinetic equations for electron and phonon degrees of freedom in the grain. We obtain the heat fluxes between cotunneling electrons, bosonic electron-hole excitations in the grain, and phonons, and self-consistently find the current-voltage characteristics. We demonstrate that the transport in the nano-junction is very sensitive to the spectrum of the bosonic modes in the grain.
