Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry: Summary of the Second Workshop

This summary of the second Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry (TVLBAI) Workshop provides a comprehensive overview of our meeting held in London in April 2024, building on the initial discussions during the inaugural workshop held at CERN in March 2023. Like the summary of the first workshop, this document records a critical milestone for the international atom interferometry community. It documents our concerted efforts to evaluate progress, address emerging challenges, and refine strategic directions for future large-scale atom interferometry projects. Our commitment to collaboration is manifested by the integration of diverse expertise and the coordination of international resources, all aimed at advancing the frontiers of atom interferometry physics and technology, as set out in a Memorandum of Understanding signed by over 50 institutions.

Identification of Deeply Bound Heteronuclear Molecules Using Pulsed Laser Depletion Spectroscopy

We demonstrate that a near-dissociation photoassociation resonance can be used to create a deeply bound molecular sample of ultracold NaCs. To probe the resulting vibrational distribution of the sample, we use a new technique that can be applied to any ultracold molecular system. We utilize a tunable pulsed dye laser to produce efficient spectroscopic scans ($\sim700$ cm$^{-1}$ at a time) in which we observe the $1^{1} Σ^{+}\rightarrow 2^{1}Σ^{+}-2^{3}Π$ vibrational progression, as well as the dissociation limit to the Cs 6$^{2}$P$_{3/2}$ asymptote. We assign $1^{1} Σ^{+}$$(\emph{v}$ = 4, 5, 6, 11, 19) vibrational levels in our sample.

Creation and detection of skyrmions in a Bose-Einstein condensate

We present the first experimental realization and characterization of two-dimensional skyrmions and half-skyrmions in a spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensate. The continuous rotation of the local spin of the skyrmion through an angle of pi (and half-skyrmion through an angle of pi/2) across the cloud is confirmed by the spatial distribution of the three spin states as parameterized by the bending angle of the ell-vector. The winding number, w = (0, 1, 2), of the skyrmions is confirmed through matter-wave interference.

Sculpting the Vortex State of a Spinor BEC

We use Raman-detuned laser pulses to achieve spatially-varying control of the amplitude and phase of the spinor order parameter of a Bose-Einstein condensate. We present experimental results confirming precise radial and azimuthal control of amplitude and phase during the creation of vortex-antivortex superposition states.

Raman Coupling of Zeeman Sublevels in an Alkali Bose Condensate

We investigate amplitude and phase control of the components of the spinor order parameter of a 87Rb Bose-Einstein condensate. By modeling the interaction of the multilevel atomic system with a pair of Raman-detuned laser pulses, we show that it is possible to construct a pulse-sequence protocol for producing a desired state change within a single Zeeman manifold. We present several successful elementary tests of this protocol in both the F = 1 and F = 2 Zeeman manifolds of 87Rb using the D1 transitions. We describe specific features of the interaction which are important for multimode, spatially-varying field configurations, including the role of state-dependent, light-induced potentials.

Manufacturing a thin wire electrostatic trap (TWIST) for ultracold polar molecules

We present a detailed description on how to build a Thin WIre electroStatic Trap (TWIST) for ultracold polar molecules. It is the first design of an electrostatic trap that can be superimposed directly onto a magneto optical trap (MOT). We can thus continuously produce ultracold polar molecules via photoassociation from a two species MOT and instantaneously trap them in the TWIST without the need for complex transfer schemes. Despite the spatial overlap of the TWIST and the MOT, the two traps can be operated and optimized completely independently due to the complementary nature of the utilized trapping mechanisms.

Trapping of ultracold polar molecules with a Thin Wire Electrostatic Trap

We describe the realization of a dc electric-field trap for ultracold polar molecules, the thin-wire electrostatic trap (TWIST). The thin wires that form the electrodes of the TWIST allow us to superimpose the trap onto a magneto-optical trap (MOT). In our experiment, ultracold polar NaCs molecules in their electronic ground state are created in the MOT via photoassociation, achieving a continuous accumulation in the TWIST of molecules in low-field seeking states. Initial measurements show that the TWIST trap lifetime is limited only by the background pressure in the chamber.

Dynamics of vortex matter in rotating two-species Bose-Einstein condensates

In a rotating two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), the traditional triangular vortex lattice can be replaced by a rectangular vortex lattice or even a structure characterized in terms of vortex sheets, depending on the interspecies interactions. We study the dynamics of this system by analyzing the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum. Excitations familiar to BEC vortex systems are found such as Tkachenko modes, hydrodynamic modes and surface waves, however, the complex two-component morphology also gives rise to new phenomena including shear flow between vortex sheets.

Quantum squeezing and entanglement in a two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate with time-dependent Josephson-like coupling

Dynamical evolution of quantum mechanical squeezing and entanglement in a two-mode Bose-Einstein condensate (TBEC) with an adiabatic, time-varying Raman coupling is studied by finding analytical expressions for these quantities. In particular, we study the entanglement between the atoms in the condensate as well as that between the two modes. The nature of the enhanced quantum correlations in TBEC is clarified by considering squeezing and entanglement both with and without the nonlinear interaction turned on; it is found that entanglement approaching maximal value can be achieved with the nonlinear interactions present. Somewhat counter-intuitively, greater squeezing is found in the absence of nonlinear interactions. This is due to the collapses and revivals of the TBEC quantum state induced by the nonlinear interactions. In addition, results involving the self-trapping phase state of TBEC indicate potential for creating a dynamically stable, macroscopic entangled quantum state which is relatively robust with respect to atom number fluctuations.

Controlling quasiparticle excitations in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

We describe an approach to quantum control of the quasiparticle excitations in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate based on adiabatic and diabatic changes in the trap anisotropy. We describe our approach in the context of Landau-Zener transition at the avoided crossings in the quasiparticle excitation spectrum. We show that there can be population oscillation between different modes at the specific aspect ratios of the trapping potential at which the mode energies are almost degenerate. These effects may have implications in the expansion of an excited condensate as well as the dynamics of a moving condensate in an atomic wave guide with a varying width.

Structural phase transitions of vortex matter in an optical lattice

We consider the vortex structure of a rapidly rotating trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a co-rotating periodic optical lattice potential. We observe a rich variety of structural phases which reflect the interplay of the vortex-vortex and vortex-lattice interactions. The lattice structure is very sensitive to the ratio of vortices to pinning sites and we observe structural phase transitions and domain formation as this ratio is varied.

Isotopic difference in the heteronuclear loss rate in a two-species surface trap

We have realized a two-species mirror-magneto-optical trap containing a mixture of $^{87}$Rb ($^{85}$Rb) and $^{133}$Cs atoms. Using this trap, we have measured the heteronuclear collisional loss rate $β_{Rb-Cs}'$ due to intra-species cold collisions. We find a distinct difference in the magnitude and intensity dependence of $β_{Rb-Cs}'$ for the two isotopes $^{87}$Rb and $^{85}$Rb which we attribute to the different ground-state hyperfine splitting energies of the two isotopes.

Calculation of the interspecies s-wave scattering length in an ultracold Na-Rb vapor

We report the calculation of the interspecies scattering length for the sodium-rubidium (Na-Rb) system. We present improved hybrid potentials for the singlet $X^1Σ^+$ and triplet $a^3Σ^+$ ground states of the NaRb molecule, and calculate the singlet and triplet scattering lengths $a_{s}$ and $a_{t}$ for the isotopomers $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb and $^{23}$Na$^{85}$Rb. Using these values, we assess the prospects for producing a stable two-species Bose-Einstein condensate in the Na-Rb system.

Vortex lattices: from the hydrodynamic to the quantum hall regime

We describe the excitations of a vortex lattice in rapidly rotating trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates, focusing on their evolution from the hydrodynamic to the quantum Hall regimes. We observe the dramatic changes and show that single particle states are an increasingly dominant signature of the spectrum. We interpret the behavior by analogy with the integral quantum Hall effect. Furthermore, we compare our results to recent experiments at JILA and find excellent agreement.

An example of quantum control via Feshbach resonance in Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a simple example of quantum control in Bose-Einstein condensates via Feshbach resonance. By tuning an initially positive scattering length to zero, it is possible to generate oscillatory motion of the condensate that results from quantum interference. The density oscillation is accompanied by a periodic enhancement of the quantum mechanical squeezing of the amplitude quadrature.

Excitation spectroscopy of vortex lattices in a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate

Excitation spectroscopy of vortex lattices in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates is described. We numerically obtain the Bogoliubov-deGenne quasiparticle excitations for a broad range of energies and analyze them in the context of the complex dynamics of the system. Our work is carried out in a regime in which standard hydrodynamic assumptions do not hold, and includes features not readily contained within existing treatments.

Tkachenko waves in rapidly rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a mean-field theory numerical study of Tkachenko waves of a vortex lattice in trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condenstates. Our results show remarkable qualitative and quantitative agreement with recent experiments at JILA. We extend our calculations beyond the conditions of the experiment, probing deeper into the incompressible regime where we find excellent agreement with analytical results. In addition, bulk excitations observed in the experiment are discussed.

Excitation spectrum of vortex lattices in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates

Using the coarse grain averaged hydrodynamic approach, we calculate the excitation spectrum of vortex lattices sustained in rotating Bose-Einstein condensates. The spectrum gives the frequencies of the common-mode longitudinal waves in the hydrodynamic regime, including those of the higher-order compressional modes. Reasonable agreement with the measurements taken in a recent JILA experiment is found, suggesting that one of the longitudinal modes reported in the experiment is likely to be the $n=2$, $m=0$ mode.
