High-precision beam profile measurement with a microchannel-plate detector in the high magnetic field of the WISArD experiment

We present the development and characterization of a compact low-energy ion beam diagnostic for the WISArD (Weak Interaction Studies with $\mathrm{^{32}Ar}$ Decay) experiment at ISOLDE/CERN. The microchannel plate (MCP) detector, which is configured in a Z-stack and has a resistive position sensitive anode, was tested with both stable and radioactive beams. This work focuses on the image reconstruction method, which corrects the pincushion distortion inherent to the square-shaped resistive anode, and investigates the influence of the magnetic field on the detector performance. Our results demonstrate that the detector achieves beam profile measurements with sub-millimeter accuracy, while coping with the spatial and high-magnetic field (4 T) constraints of the experiment. These capabilities meet the precision requirements of the WISArD experiment for extracting the modified beta-neutrino angular correlation coefficient, \~a$_{\beta\nu}$, with an uncertainty of 0.1%.

Simulation and optimization of the Active Magnetic Shield of the n2EDM experiment

The n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute aims to conduct a high-sensitivity search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron. Magnetic stability and control are achieved through a combination of passive shielding, provided by a magnetically shielded room (MSR), and a surrounding active field compensation system by an Active Magnetic Shield (AMS). The AMS is a feedback-controlled system of eight coils spanned on an irregular grid, designed to provide magnetic stability to the enclosed volume by actively suppressing external magnetic disturbances. It can compensate static and variable magnetic fields up to $\pm 50$ $\mu$T (homogeneous components) and $\pm 5$ $\mu$T/m (first-order gradients), suppressing them to a few $\mu$T in the sub-Hertz frequency range. We present a full finite element simulation of magnetic fields generated by the AMS in the presence of the MSR. This simulation is of sufficient accuracy to approach our measurements. We demonstrate how the simulation can be used with an example, obtaining an optimal number and placement of feedback sensors using genetic algorithms.

Measurement of the neutron incoherent scattering length of ${}^{199}$Hg using stored ultracold neutrons

We present the first direct measurement of the neutron incoherent scattering length of ${}^{199}$Hg. The measurement was performed with the Ramsey apparatus of the neutron electric dipole moment experiment located at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The incoherent scattering length $b_\textrm{i}$ was determined by investigating the pseudo-magnetic effect due to the strong interaction between the neutron spins and the nuclear spins of mercury atoms. The resulting frequency shift of the neutron Larmor precession frequency was determined for various ${}^{199}$Hg density and polarization values. The obtained value of $b_\textrm{i}= (-16.2 \pm 2.0)\,$fm agrees in magnitude with previous determinations and provides the so-far unknown sign of the quantity.

Ultracold neutron energy spectrum and storage properties from magnetically induced spin depolarization

We present a novel method for extracting the energy spectrum of ultracold neutrons from magnetically induced spin depolarization measurements using the n2EDM apparatus. This method is also sensitive to the storage properties of the materials used to trap ultracold neutrons, specifically, whether collisions are specular or diffuse. We highlight the sensitivity of this new technique by comparing the two different storage chambers of the n2EDM experiment. We validate the extraction by comparing to an independent measurement for how this energy spectrum is polarized through a magnetic-filter, and finally, we calculate the neutron center-of-mass offset, an important systematic effect for measurements of the neutron electric dipole moment.

Optical studies of scintillation detectors for precision beta-energy measurements

This work presents optical calculations and simulations for scintillation detectors used in precision measurements of beta-particle energy spectra. Particular attention is given to Cherenkov photons and the impact of the light detection efficiency in the detector ensemble. We present an approach to estimate this light detection efficiency from the measured energy resolution of a detector. This is essential for the inclusion of scintillation photons in optical tracking Monte-Carlo simulations. A method to account for possible saturation and cross-talk of silicon photo-multipliers is also discussed. The impact of these effects is quantified in terms of systematic shifts in the extraction of the Fierz interference term from measurements of beta-energy spectra using scintillator detectors.

Performance of the MORA Apparatus for Testing Time-Reversal Invariance in Nuclear Beta Decay

The MORA experimental setup is designed to measure the triple-correlation D parameter in nuclear beta decay. The D coefficient is sensitive to possible violations of time-reversal invariance. The experimental configuration consists of a transparent Paul trap surrounded by a detection setup with alternating beta and recoil-ion detectors. The octagonal symmetry of the detection setup optimizes the sensitivity of positron-recoil-ion coincidence rates to the D correlation, while reducing systematic effects. MORA utilizes an innovative in-trap laser polarization technique. The design and performance of the ion trap, associated beamline elements, lasers and beta and recoil-ion detectors, are presented. Recent progress towards the polarization proof-of-principle is described.

Generating a highly uniform magnetic field inside the magnetically shielded room of the n2EDM experiment

We present a coil system designed to generate a highly uniform magnetic field for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. It consists of a main $B_0$ coil and a set of auxiliary coils mounted on a cubic structure with a side length of 273 cm, inside a large magnetically shielded room (MSR). We have assembled this system and characerized its performances with a mapping robot. The apparatus is able to generate a 1 $μ$ T vertical field with a relative root mean square deviation $σ$ ($B_z$)/$B_z$ = 3 $\times$ $10^{-5}$ over the volume of interest, a cylinder of radius 40 cm and height 30 cm. This level of uniformity overcomes the n2EDM requirements, allowing a measurement of the neutron Electric Dipole Moment with a sensitivity better than 1 $\times$ $10^{-27}$ ecm.

A first extraction of the weak magnetism form factor and Fierz interference term from the $^{114}$In $\rightarrow$ $^{114}$Sn Gamow-Teller transition

Spectrum shape measurements in nuclear $β$ decay can be used to test physics beyond the Standard Model with results being complementary to high-energy collider experiments. In particular, Beyond Standard Model sensitivity of the weak interaction is expressed through the so-called Fierz interference term. Additionally, the $β$ spectrum shape is a useful tool to probe Standard Model effects, among which the most prominent is \textit{weak magnetism}, a higher-order recoil correction induced by nuclear pion exchange. To study effects in the $β$ spectrum shape at a precision level competitive with the LHC, a new spectrometer was designed and built. It consists of a 3D low-pressure gas electron tracker and a plastic scintillator used for triggering the data acquisition and recording the $β$ particle energy. In this Letter, the results from $β$ spectrum shape measurements on the allowed Gamow-Teller transition $^{114}\text{In} \rightarrow ^{114}\text{Sn}$ are presented, including a first extraction of the weak magnetism form factor in the high nuclear mass range and a new estimate of the $90\%$ confidence interval for the Fierz interference term.

Achieving ultra-low and -uniform residual magnetic fields in a very large magnetically shielded room for fundamental physics experiments

High-precision searches for an electric dipole moment of the neutron (nEDM) require stable and uniform magnetic field environments. We present the recent achievements of degaussing and equilibrating the magnetically shielded room (MSR) for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. We present the final degaussing configuration that will be used for n2EDM after numerous studies. The optimized procedure results in a residual magnetic field that has been reduced by a factor of two. The ultra-low field is achieved with the full magnetic-field-coil system, and a large vacuum vessel installed, both in the MSR. In the inner volume of ~1.4 m^3, the field is now more uniform and below 300 pT. In addition, the procedure is faster and dissipates less heat into the magnetic environment, which in turn, reduces its thermal relaxation time from 12 h down to ~1.5 h.

A large 'Active Magnetic Shield' for a high-precision experiment

We present a novel Active Magnetic Shield (AMS), designed and implemented for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The experiment will perform a high-sensitivity search for the electric dipole moment of the neutron. Magnetic-field stability and control is of key importance for n2EDM. A large, cubic, 5m side length, magnetically shielded room (MSR) provides a passive, quasi-static shielding-factor of about 10^5 for its inner sensitive volume. The AMS consists of a system of eight complex, feedback-controlled compensation coils constructed on an irregular grid spanned on a volume of less than 1000m^3 around the MSR. The AMS is designed to provide a stable and uniform magnetic-field environment around the MSR, while being reasonably compact. The system can compensate static and variable magnetic fields up to +-50muT (homogeneous components) and +-5muT (first-order gradients), suppressing them to a few muT in the sub-Hertz frequency range. The presented design concept and implementation of the AMS fulfills the requirements of the n2EDM experiment and can be useful for other applications, where magnetically silent environments are important and spatial constraints inhibit simpler geometrical solutions.

Muonic atom spectroscopy with microgram target material

Muonic atom spectroscopy -- the measurement of the x rays emitted during the formation process of a muonic atom -- has a long standing history in probing the shape and size of nuclei. In fact, almost all stable elements have been subject to muonic atom spectroscopy measurements and the absolute charge radii extracted from these measurements typically offer the highest accuracy available. However, so far only targets of at least a few hundred milligram could be used as it required to stop a muon beam directly in the target to form the muonic atom. We have developed a new method relying on repeated transfer reactions taking place inside a 100-bar hydrogen gas cell with an admixture of 0.25% deuterium that allows us to drastically reduce the amount of target material needed while still offering an adequate efficiency. Detailed simulations of the transfer reactions match the measured data, suggesting good understanding of the processes taking place inside the gas mixture. As a proof of principle we demonstrate the method with a measurement of the 2p-1s muonic x rays from a 5-μg gold target.

Search for an interaction mediated by axion-like particles with ultracold neutrons at the PSI

We report on a search for a new, short-range, spin-dependent interaction using a modified version of the experimental apparatus used to measure the permanent neutron electric dipole moment at the Paul Scherrer Institute. This interaction, which could be mediated by axion-like particles, concerned the unpolarized nucleons (protons and neutrons) near the material surfaces of the apparatus and polarized ultracold neutrons stored in vacuum. The dominant systematic uncertainty resulting from magnetic-field gradients was controlled to an unprecedented level of approximately 4 pT/cm using an array of optically-pumped cesium vapor magnetometers and magnetic-field maps independently recorded using a dedicated measurement device. No signature of a theoretically predicted new interaction was found, and we set a new limit on the product of the scalar and the pseudoscalar couplings $g_sg_pλ^2 < 8.3 \times 10^{-28}\,\text{m}^2$ (95% C.L.) in a range of $5\,μ\text{m} < λ< 25\,\text{mm}$ for the monopole-dipole interaction. This new result confirms and improves our previous limit by a factor of 2.7 and provides the current tightest limit obtained with free neutrons.

Search for ultralight axion dark matter in a side-band analysis of a 199Hg free-spin precession signal

Ultra-low-mass axions are a viable dark matter candidate and may form a coherently oscillating classical field. Nuclear spins in experiments on Earth might couple to this oscillating axion dark-matter field, when propagating on Earth's trajectory through our Galaxy. This spin coupling resembles an oscillating pseudo-magnetic field which modulates the spin precession of nuclear spins. Here we report on the null result of a demonstration experiment searching for a frequency modulation of the free spin-precession signal of \magHg in a \SI{1}{\micro\tesla} magnetic field. Our search covers the axion mass range $10^{-16}~\textrm{eV} \lesssim m_a \lesssim 10^{-13}~\textrm{eV}$ and achieves a peak sensitivity to the axion-nucleon coupling of $g_{aNN} \approx 3.5 \times 10^{-6}~\textrm{GeV}^{-1}$.

Gas electron tracking detector for beta decay experiments

For identification and 3D-tracking of low-energy electrons a new type of gas-based detector was designed that minimizes scattering and energy loss. The current version of the detector is a combination of a plastic scintillator, serving as a trigger source and energy detector, and a hexagonally structured multi-wire drift chamber (MWDC), filled with a mixture of helium and isobutane gas. The drift time information is used to track particles in the plane perpendicular to the wires, while a charge division technique provides spatial information along the wires. The gas tracker was successfully used in the miniBETA project as a beta spectrometer for a measurement of the weak magnetism form factor in nuclear beta decay. The precision of the three-dimensional electron tracking, in combination with low-mass, low-Z materials and identification of backscattering from scintillator, facilitated a reduction of the main systematics effects. At certain conditions, a spatial resolution better than 0.5 mm was obtained in the plane perpendicular to the wires, while resolutions of about 6 mm were achieved along wires. Thanks to precise tracking information, it is possible to eliminate electrons and other particles not originating from the desired decay with high efficiency. Additionally, using the coincidence between MWDC and scintillator, background from gamma emission typically accompanying radioactive decays, was highly suppressed. An overview of different event topologies is presented together with the tracker's ability to correctly recognize them. The analysis is supported by Monte Carlo simulations using Geant4 and Garfield++ packages. Finally, the preliminary results from the 114In spectrum study are presented.

The `n2EDM MSR' -- a very large magnetically shielded room with an exceptional performance for fundamental physics measurements

We present the magnetically shielded room (MSR) for the n2EDM experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute which features an interior cubic volume with each side of length 2.92m, thus providing an accessible space of 25m3. The MSR has 87 openings up to 220mm diameter to operate the experimental apparatus inside, and an intermediate space between the layers for sensitive signal processing electronics. The characterization measurements show a remanent magnetic field in the central 1m3 below 100pT, and a field below 600pT in the entire inner volume, up to 4\,cm to the walls. The quasi-static shielding factor at 0.01\,Hz measured with a sinusoidal 2muT peak-to-peak signal is about 100,000 in all three spatial directions and rises fast with frequency to reach 10^8 above 1Hz.

Mapping of the magnetic field to correct systematic effects in a neutron electric dipole moment experiment

Experiments dedicated to the measurement of the electric dipole moment of the neutron require outstanding control of the magnetic field uniformity. The neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institute uses a 199Hg co-magnetometer to precisely monitor magnetic field variations. This co-magnetometer, in the presence of field non-uniformity, is responsible for the largest systematic effect of this measurement. To evaluate and correct that effect, offline measurements of the field non-uniformity were performed during mapping campaigns in 2013, 2014 and 2017. We present the results of these campaigns, and the improvement the correction of this effect brings to the neutron electric dipole moment measurement.

Influence of the recoil-order and radiative correction on the beta decay correlation coefficients in mirror decays

Measurements of the beta decay correlation coefficients in nuclear decay aim for a precision below $1\%$ and theoretical predictions should follow this trend. In this work, the influence of the two dominant Standard Model correction terms, i.e. the recoil-order and the radiative correction, are studied for the most commonly measured beta correlations, i.e. the $β$-asymmetry parameter ($A_β$) and the $β-ν$ angular correlation ($a_{βν}$). The recoil-order correction is calculated with the well-known Holstein formalism using the impulse approximation to evaluate experimentally inaccessible form factors. For the $β-ν$ angular correlation previously unpublished, semi-analytical radiative correction values are tabulated. Results are presented for the mirror beta decays up to $A=45$. We examine the effect of both corrections and provide a comparison between different isotopes. This comparison will help planning, analysing, and comparing future experimental efforts.

$\mathcal{F}t$ values of the mirror $β$ transitions and the weak magnetism induced current in allowed nuclear $β$ decay

In recent years a number of correlation measurements in nuclear $β$ decay have been performed reaching a precision of the order of 1\% and below and it is expected that even higher precision will be reached in the near future. At these levels of precision higher-order corrections due to e.g. recoil terms induced by the strong interaction and radiative corrections cannot necessarily be neglected anymore when interpreting these results in terms of new physics or extracting a value for the $V_{ud}$ quark-mixing matrix element. We provide here an update of the $\mathcal{F} t$ values of the $T=1/2$ mirror $β$ decays as well as an overview of current experimental and theoretical knowledge of the most important recoil term, weak magnetism, for both the $T=1/2$ mirror $β$ transitions and a large set of $β$ decays in higher isospin multiplets. The matrix elements determining weak magnetism were calculated in the nuclear shell model and cross-checked against experimental data, showing overall good agreement. Additionally, we show that further insight can be obtained from properly deformed nuclear potentials, in particular for mirror $T=1/2$ decays.. The results provide new insights in the size of weak magnetism, extending the available information to $β$ transitions of nuclei with masses up to $A =$ 75. This provides important guidance for the planning and interpretation of ongoing and new precise correlation measurements in nuclear $β$ decay searching for new physics or to extract the $V_{ud}$ quark-mixing matrix element in mirror $β$ decays. This more detailed knowledge of weak magnetism can also be of interest for further theoretical work related to the reactor neutrino problem.
