Starobinsky Inflation: From Non-SUSY To SUGRA Realizations

We review the realization of Starobinsky-type inflation within induced-gravity Supersymmetric (SUSY) and non-SUSY models. In both cases, inflation is in agreement with the current data and can be attained for subplanckian values of the inflaton. The corresponding effective theories retain perturbative unitarity up to the Planck scale and the inflaton mass is predicted to be 3x10^13 GeV. The supergravity embedding of these models is achieved by employing two gauge singlet chiral supefields, a superpotential that is uniquely determined by a continuous R and a discrete Zn symmetry, and several (semi)logarithmic Kaehler potentials that respect these symmetries. Checking various functional forms for the non-inflaton accompanying field in the Kaehler potentials, we identify four cases which stabilize it without invoking higher order terms.

Starobinsky-Type Inflation With Products of Kaehler Manifolds

We present a novel realization of Starobinsky-type inflation within Supergravity using two chiral superfields. The proposed superpotential is inspired by induced-gravity models. The Kaehler potential contains two logarithmic terms, one for the inflaton T and one for the matter-like field S, parameterizing the SU(1,1)/U(1)x SU(2)/U(1) Kaehler manifold. The two factors have constant curvatures -m/n and 2/n2, where n, m are the exponents of T in the superpotential and Kaehler potential respectively, and 0<n2<=6. The inflationary observables depend on the ratio 2n/m only. Essentially they coincide with the observables of the original Starobinsky model. Moreover, the inflaton mass is predicted to be 3x10^13 GeV.

Leptogenesis and Neutrino Masses in an Inflationary SUSY Pati-Salam Model

We implement the mechanism of non-thermal leptogenesis in the framework of an inflationary model based on a supersymmetric (SUSY) Pati-Salam Grand Unified Theory (GUT). In particular, we show that inflation is driven by a quartic potential associated with the Higgs fields involved in the spontaneous GUT symmetry breaking, in the presence of a non-minimal coupling of the inflaton field to gravity. The inflationary model relies on renormalizable superpotential terms and does not lead to overproduction of magnetic monopoles. It is largely independent of one-loop radiative corrections, and it can be consistent with current observational data on the inflationary observables, with the GUT symmetry breaking scale assuming its SUSY value. Non-thermal leptogenesis is realized by the out-of-equilibrium decay of the two lightest right-handed (RH) neutrinos, which are produced by the inflaton decay. Confronting our scenario with the current observational data on light neutrinos, the GUT prediction for the heaviest Dirac neutrino mass, the baryon asymmetry of the universe and the gravitino limit on the reheating temperature, we constrain the masses of the RH neutrinos in the range (10^10-10^15) GeV and the Dirac neutrino masses of the two first generations to values between 0.1 and 20 GeV.

Non-Minimal Higgs Inflation and non-Thermal Leptogenesis in a Supersymmetric Pati-Salam Model

We consider a supersymmetric (SUSY) Grand Unified Theory (GUT) based on the gauge group G_PS=SU(4)_C x SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R, which incorporates non-minimal chaotic inflation, driven by a quartic potential associated with the Higgs fields involved in the spontaneous breaking of G_PS. The inflationary model relies on renormalizable superpotetial terms and does not lead to overproduction of magnetic monopoles. It is largely independent of the one-loop radiative corrections and can become consistent with the current observational data on the inflationary observables, with the symmetry breaking scale of G_PS assuming its SUSY value. Within our model, the strong CP and the mu problems of the minimal supersymmetric standard model can be resolved via a Peccei-Quinn symmetry. Moreover baryogenesis occurs via non-thermal leptogenesis realized by the out-of-equilibrium decay of the right-handed neutrinos, which are produced by the inflaton's decay. We consider two versions of such a scenario, assuming that the inflaton can decay to the lightest or to the next-to-lightest right-handed neutrino. Both scenaria can become compatible with the constraints arising from the baryon asymmetry of the universe, the gravitino limit on the reheating temperature and the upper bound on the light neutrino masses, provided that the gravitino is somehow heavy. In the second scenario extra restrictions from the SU(4)_C symmetry on the heaviest Dirac neutrino mass and the data on the atmospheric neutrino oscillations can be also met.

Non-Minimal Sneutrino Inflation, Peccei-Quinn Phase Transition and non-Thermal Leptogenesis

We consider a phenomenological extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model which incorporates non-minimal chaotic inflation, driven by a quartic potential associated with the lightest right-handed sneutrino. Inflation is followed by a Peccei-Quinn phase transition based on renormalizable superpotential terms, which resolves the strong CP and mu problems of the minimal supersymmetric standard model provided that one related parameter of the superpotential is somewhat small. Baryogenesis occurs via non-thermal leptogenesis, which is realized by the inflaton decay. Confronting our scenario with the current observational data on the inflationary observables, the baryon assymetry of the universe, the gravitino limit on the reheating temperature and the upper bound on the light neutrino masses, we constrain the effective Yukawa coupling involved in the decay of the inflaton to relatively small values and the inflaton mass to values lower than 10^12 GeV.

Resolution of Hagedorn singularity in superstrings with gravito-magnetic fluxes

We consider closed type II and orientifold backgrounds where supersymmetry is spontaneously broken by asymmetric geometrical fluxes. We show that these can be used to describe thermal ensembles with chemical potentials associated to "gravito-magnetic" fluxes. The thermal free energy is computed at the one-loop string level, and it is shown to be free of the usual Hagedorn-like instabilities for a certain choice of the chemical potentials. In the closed string gravitational sector, as well as in the open string matter sector of the proposed orientifold construction, the free energy turns out to have "Temperature duality" symmetry, ${\cal F}(T/T_H)={T^2\over T_H^2} {\cal F}(T_H/T)$, which requires interchanging the space-time spinor representations $S\leftrightarrow C$. For small temperatures, $T\to 0$, the anti-spinor $C$ decouples from the spectrum while for large temperatures, $T\to \infty$, the spinor $S$ decouples. In both limits the free energy vanishes, as we recover a conventional type II superstring theory. At the self dual point $T=T_H$, the thermal spectra of $S$ and $C$ are identical. Moreover, there are extra massless scalars in the adjoint representation of an SO(4) non-abelian gauge symmetry in the closed-string sector, and open-string massless states charged simultaneously under both the Chan-Paton and the closed-string SO(4) gauge group.

Correlators, Probabilities and Topologies in N=4 SYM

We calculate transition probabilities for various processes involving giant gravitons and small gravitons in AdS space, using the dual N=4 SYM theory. The normalization factors for these probabilities involve, in general, correlators for manifolds of non-trivial topology which are obtained by gluing simpler four-manifolds. This follows from the factorization properties which relate CFT correlators for different topologies. These points are illustrated, in the first instance, in the simpler example of a two dimensional Matrix CFT. We give the bulk five dimensional interpretation, involving neighborhoods of Witten graphs, of these gluing properties of the four dimensional boundary CFT. As a corollary we give a simple description, based on Witten graphs, of a multiplicity of bulk topologies corresponding to a fixed boundary topology. We also propose to interpret the correlators as topology-changing transition amplitudes between LLM geometries.

Noncommutative geometry, Quantum effects and DBI-scaling in the collapse of D0-D2 bound states

We study fluctuations of time-dependent fuzzy two-sphere solutions of the non-abelian DBI action of D0-branes, describing a bound state of a spherical D2-brane with N D0-branes. The quadratic action for small fluctuations is shown to be identical to that obtained from the dual abelian D2-brane DBI action, using the non-commutative geometry of the fuzzy two-sphere. For some of the fields, the linearized equations take the form of solvable Lamé equations. We define a large-N DBI-scaling limit, with vanishing string coupling and string length, and where the gauge theory coupling remains finite. In this limit, the non-linearities of the DBI action survive in both the classical and the quantum context, while massive open string modes and closed strings decouple. We describe a critical radius where strong gauge coupling effects become important. The size of the bound quantum ground state of multiple D0-branes makes an intriguing appearance as the radius of the fuzzy sphere, where the maximal angular momentum quanta become strongly coupled.

The Eight Dimensional Quantum Hall Effect and the Octonions

We construct a generalization of the quantum Hall effect where particles move in an eight dimensional space under an SO(8) gauge field. The underlying mathematics of this particle liquid is that of the last normed division algebra, the octonions. Two fundamentally different liquids with distinct configurations spaces can be constructed, depending on whether the particles carry spinor or vector SO(8) quantum numbers. One of the liquids lives on a 20 dimensional manifold of with an internal component of SO(7) holonomy, whereas the second liquid lives on a 14 dimensional manifold with an internal component of $G_2$ holonomy.

How Bob Laughlin Tamed the Giant Graviton from Taub-NUT space

In this paper we show how two dimensional electron systems can be modeled by strings interacting with D-branes. The dualities of string theory allow several descriptions of the system. These include descriptions in terms of solitons in the near horizon D6-brane theory, non-commutative gauge theory on a D2-brane, the Matrix Theory of D0-branes and finally as a giant graviton in M-theory. The soliton can be described as a D2-brane with an incompressible fluid of D0-branes and charged string-ends moving on it. Including an NS5 brane in the system allows for the existence of an edge with the characteristic massless chiral edge states of the Quantum Hall system.

Space/Time Non-Commutativity and Causality

Field theories based on non-commutative spacetimes exhibit very distinctive nonlocal effects which mix the ultraviolet with the infrared in bizarre ways. In particular if the time coordinate is involved in the non-commutativity the theory seems to be seriously acausal and inconsistent with conventional Hamiltonian evolution. To illustrate these effects we study the scattering of wave packets in a field theory with space/time non-commutativity. In this theory we find effects which seem to precede their causes and rigid rods which grow instead of Lorentz contract as they are boosted. These field theories are evidently inconsistent and violate causality and unitarity. On the other hand open string theory in a background electric field is expected to exhibit space/time non-commutativity. This raises the question of whether they also lead to acausal behavior. We show that this is not the case. Stringy effects conspire to cancel the acausal effects that are present for the non-commutative field theory.

Strings in Background Electric Field, Space/Time Noncommutativity and A New Noncritical String Theory

Searching for space/time noncommutativity we reconsider open strings in a constant background electric field. The main difference between this situation and its magnetic counterpart is that here there is a critical electric field beyond which the theory does not make sense. We show that this critical field prevents us from finding a limit in which the theory becomes a field theory on a noncommutative spacetime. However, an appropriate limit toward the critical field leads to a novel noncritical string theory on a noncommutative spacetime.

Perturbative QCD relations inspired by hypothetical tau leptons

We review our recent works on tests of perturbative QCD, inspired by the relation between the hadronic decay of the tau lepton and the e+ e- annihilation into hadrons. First, we present a set of commensurate scale relations that probe the self-consistency of leading-twist QCD predictions for any observable which defines an effective charge. These tests are independent of the renormalization scheme and scale, and are applicable over wide data ranges. As an example we apply this approach to R_{e+ e-}. Second, using a differential form of these conmensurate scale relations, we present a method to measure the QCD Gell-Mann--Low Psi function.

New Tests of Perturbative QCD Inspired by Hypothetical Tau Leptons

Inspired by the relation between the hadronic decay of the tau lepton and the electron-positron annihilation into hadrons, we derive new tests of perturbative QCD. We design a set of commensurate scale relations to test the self-consistency of leading-twist QCD predictions for any observable which defines an effective charge. This method provides renormalization scheme and scale invariant probes of QCD which can be applied over wide data ranges.

Testing QCD with Hypothetical Tau Leptons

We construct new tests of perturbative QCD by considering a hypothetical tau lepton of arbitrary mass, which decays hadronically through the electromagnetic current. We can explicitly compute its hadronic width ratio directly as an integral over the e^+ e^- annihilation cross section ratio, R_{e^+e^-}. Furthermore, we can design a set of commensurate scale relations and perturbative QCD tests by varying the weight function away from the form associated with the V-A decay of the physical tau. This method allows the wide range of the R_{e^+e^-} data to be used as a probe of perturbative QCD.
