On the Formation of the Double Neutron Star Binary PSR J1846-0513

The double neutron star PSR J1846-0513 is discovered by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) in Commensal Radio Astronomy FAST Survey. The pulsar is revealed to be harbored in an eccentric orbit with $e=0.208$ and orbital period of 0.613 days. The total mass of the system is constrained to be $2.6287(35)\rm{M}_{\odot}$, with a mass upper limit of $1.3455{\rm~M}_{\odot}$ for the pulsar and a mass lower limit of $1.2845{\rm~M}_{\odot}$ for the companion star. To reproduce its evolution history, we perform a 1D model for the formation of PSR J1846-0513 whose progenitor is assumed to be neutron star - helium (He) star system via MESA code. Since the large eccentricity is widely believed to originate from an asymmetric supernova explosion, we also investigate the dynamical effects of the supernova explosion. Our simulated results show that the progenitor of PSR J1846-0513 could be a binary system consisting of a He star of $3.3-4.0{\rm~M}_\odot$ and a neutron star in a circular orbit with an initial period of $\sim0.5$ days.

A Repeating Fast Radio Burst Source in a Low-Luminosity Dwarf Galaxy

We present the localization and host galaxy of FRB 20190208A, a repeating source of fast radio bursts (FRBs) discovered using CHIME/FRB. As part of the PRECISE repeater localization program on the EVN, we monitored FRB 20190208A for 65.6 hours at $\sim1.4$ GHz and detected a single burst, which led to its VLBI localization with 260 mas uncertainty (2$σ$). Follow-up optical observations with the MMT Observatory ($i\gtrsim 25.7$ mag (AB)) found no visible host at the FRB position. Subsequent deeper observations with the GTC, however, revealed an extremely faint galaxy ($r=27.32 \pm0.16$ mag), very likely ($99.95 \%$) associated with FRB 20190208A. Given the dispersion measure of the FRB ($\sim580$ pc cm$^{-3}$), even the most conservative redshift estimate ($z_{\mathrm{max}}\sim0.83$) implies that this is the lowest-luminosity FRB host to date ($\lesssim10^8L_{\odot}$), even less luminous than the dwarf host of FRB 20121102A. We investigate how localization precision and the depth of optical imaging affect host association, and discuss the implications of such a low-luminosity dwarf galaxy. Unlike the other repeaters with low-luminosity hosts, FRB 20190208A has a modest Faraday rotation measure of a few tens of rad m$^{-2}$, and EVN plus VLA observations reveal no associated compact persistent radio source. We also monitored FRB 20190208A for 40.4 hours over 2 years as part of the ÉCLAT repeating FRB monitoring campaign on the Nançay Radio Telescope, and detected one burst. Our results demonstrate that, in some cases, the robust association of an FRB with a host galaxy will require both high localization precision, as well as deep optical follow-up.

Investigation of individual pulse emission behaviours from pulsar J1741$-$0840

We have carried out a detailed study of individual pulse emission from the pulsar J1741$-$0840 (B1738$-$08), observed using the Parkes and Effelsberg radio telescopes at the $L$ band. The pulsar exhibits four emission components which are not well resolved by employing multi-component Gaussian fitting. The radio emission originates at a height of approximately 1000 km, with the viewing geometry characterized by inclination and impact angles roughly estimated at 81$^\circ$ and 3$^\circ$, respectively. Fluctuation spectral analysis of single pulse behaviour reveals two prominent periodicities, around 32 and 5 rotation periods. The longer periodic modulation feature is linked to nulling behaviour across the entire emission window, with an updated nulling fraction of 23$\pm$2\% is derived from pulse energy distribution via Gaussian mixture modeling. In addition to quasiperiodic nulling, the pulsar also exhibits the presence of subpulse drifting in the trailing component, with the shorter periodic feature in the fluctuation spectra related to the phenomenon of subpulse drifting, and the longitudinal separation estimated to be about 5 degrees. Both periodic modulations show significant temporal evolution with time-dependent fluctuation power. The ramifications for understanding the radio emission mechanisms are discussed.

Partial disruption of a planet around a white dwarf: the effect of perturbation from the remnant planet on the accretion

About 25\% -50\% of white dwarfs (WDs) are found to be polluted by heavy elements. It has been argued that the pollution could be caused by the tidal disruption of an approaching planet around the WD, during which a large number of clumps would be produced and would finally fall onto the WD. The reason that the planet approaches the WD is usually believed to be due to gravitational perturbations from another distant planet or stellar companion. However, the dynamics of the perturbation and the detailed partial disruption process are still poorly understood. In this study, we present an in-depth investigation of these issues. A triple system composed of a WD, an inner orbit planet, and an outer orbit planet is considered. The inner plant would be partially disrupted periodically in the long-term evolution. Fragments generated in the process are affected by the gravitational perturbations from the remnant planet, facilitating their falling toward the WD. The mass loss rate of the inner planet depends on both its internal structure and also on the orbital configuration of the planetary system.

Low carbon optimal scheduling of integrated energy system considering waste heat utilization under the coordinated operation of incineration power plant and P2G

In order to improve energy utilization and reduce carbon emissions, this paper presents a comprehensive energy system economic operation strategy of Incineration power plant Power-to-gas (P2G) with waste heat recovery. First, consider the coordinated operation of Incineration power plant - P2G, introduce the refined Power-to-gas two-stage operation process, add Hydrogen fuel cells on the basis of traditional Power-to-gas to reduce the energy ladder loss, and recycle the Methanation reaction heat; Secondly, in order to improve the energy utilization efficiency of Incineration, it is considered to install a waste heat recovery device containing a water source heat pump to recover the waste heat of flue gas and consume some electric energy, sourced from wind power, and add a CO2 separation device to combine the recovered CO2 with P2G to synthesize CH4 to achieve carbon recycling. Finally, within the framework of a tiered carbon trading mechanism an IES optimization model for electricity-heat with the goal of minimizing the system operating cost is constructed, and the GUROBI modeling optimization engine is used to solve this model. The results verify the effectiveness of the model.

General Impedance Modeling for Modular Multilevel Converter with Grid-forming and Grid-following Control

Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has complex topology, control architecture and broadband harmonic spectrum. For this, linear-time-periodic (LTP) theory, covering multi-harmonic coupling relations, has been adopted for MMC impedance modeling recently. However, the existing MMC impedance models usually lack explicit expressions and general modeling procedure for different control strategies. To this end, this paper proposes a general impedance modeling procedure applicable to various power converters with grid-forming and grid-following control strategies. The modeling is based on a unified representation of MMC circuit as the input and output relation between the voltage or current on the AC side and the exerted modulation index, while the control part vice versa, thereby interconnected as closed-loop feedback. With each part expressed as transfer functions, the final impedance model keeps the explicit form of harmonic transfer function matrix, making it convenient to directly observe and analyze the influence of each part individually. Thereby the submodule capacitance is found as the main cause of difference between MMC impedance compared to two-level converter, which will get closer as the capacitance increases. Effectiveness and generality of the impedance modeling method is demonstrated through comprehensive comparison with impedance scanning using electromagnetic transient simulation.

Efficient automatic segmentation for multi-level pulmonary arteries: The PARSE challenge

Efficient automatic segmentation of multi-level (i.e. main and branch) pulmonary arteries (PA) in CTPA images plays a significant role in clinical applications. However, most existing methods concentrate only on main PA or branch PA segmentation separately and ignore segmentation efficiency. Besides, there is no public large-scale dataset focused on PA segmentation, which makes it highly challenging to compare the different methods. To benchmark multi-level PA segmentation algorithms, we organized the first \textbf{P}ulmonary \textbf{AR}tery \textbf{SE}gmentation (PARSE) challenge. On the one hand, we focus on both the main PA and the branch PA segmentation. On the other hand, for better clinical application, we assign the same score weight to segmentation efficiency (mainly running time and GPU memory consumption during inference) while ensuring PA segmentation accuracy. We present a summary of the top algorithms and offer some suggestions for efficient and accurate multi-level PA automatic segmentation. We provide the PARSE challenge as open-access for the community to benchmark future algorithm developments at \url{https://parse2022.grand-challenge.org/Parse2022/}.

Measures to mitigate the coherent beam-beam instability at CEPC

Both horizontal and vertical coherent beam-beam instability are important issues at CEPC. The horizontal instability (X-Z instability) could be induced by beam-beam itself. In this paper we try to study the effect of chromaticity and resistive feedback by analysis and simulation. The vertical instability may be induced due to the combined effect of beam-beam interaction and vacuum impedance. Finite chromaticity and asymmetrical tunes have been proposed to suppress the vertical instability. Due to the further increase of impedance budget, we need to find more measures to mitigate the instability. The effect of resistive feedback and hourglass effect are evaluated by simulation.

Repeating X-ray bursts: Interaction between a neutron star and clumps partially disrupted from a planet

Repeating X-ray bursts from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1806-20 have been observed with a period of 398 days. Similarly, periodic X-ray bursts from SGR 1935+2154 with a period of 238 days have also been observed. Here we argue that these X-ray bursts could be produced by the interaction of a neutron star (NS) with its planet in a highly elliptical orbit. The periastron of the planet is very close to the NS, so it would be partially disrupted by the tidal force every time it passes through the periastron. Major fragments generated in the process will fall onto the NS under the influence of gravitational perturbation. The collision of the in-falling fragments with the NS produces repeating X-ray bursts. The main features of the observed X-ray bursts, such as their energy, duration, periodicity, and activity window, can all be explained in our framework.

A Search for Radio Pulsars in Supernova Remnants Using FAST with One Pulsar Discovered

We report on the results of a search for radio pulsars in five supernova remnants (SNRs) with FAST. The observations were made using the 19-beam receiver in the Snapshot mode. The integration time for each pointing is 10 min. We discovered a new pulsar PSR J1845$-$0306 which has a spin period of 983.6 ms and a dispersion measure of 444.6$\pm$2.0 cm$^{-3}$ pc in observations of SNR G29.6+0.1. To judge the association between the pulsar and the SNR, further verification is needed. We also re-detected some known pulsars in the data from SNRs G29.6+0.1 and G29.7$-$0.3. No pulsars were detected in observations of other three SNRs.

The Study of Mode Switching behavior of PSR J0614+2229 Using the Parkes Ultra-wideband Receiver Observations

In this paper, we presented a detailed single pulse and polarization study of PSR J0614+2229 based on the archived data observed on 2019 August 15 (MJD 58710) and September 12 (MJD 58738) using the Ultra-wideband Low-frequency Receiver on the Parkes radio telescope. The single-pulse sequences show that this pulsar switches between two emission states, in which the emission of state A occurs earlier than that of state B in pulse longitude. We found that the variation in relative brightness between the two states is related to time and both states follow a simple power law very well. Based on the phase-aligned multi-frequency profiles, we found that there is a significant difference in the distributions of spectral index across the emission regions of the two states. Furthermore, we obtained the emission height evolution for the two emission states and found that, at a fixed frequency, the emission height of state A is higher than that of state B. What is even more interesting is that the emission heights of both states A and B have not changed with frequency. Our results suggest that the mode switching of this pulsar is possibly caused by changes in the emission heights that alter the distributions of spectral index across the emission regions of states A and B resulting in the frequency-dependent behaviors, i.e., intensity and pulse width.

Learning Generalizable Models via Disentangling Spurious and Enhancing Potential Correlations

Domain generalization (DG) intends to train a model on multiple source domains to ensure that it can generalize well to an arbitrary unseen target domain. The acquisition of domain-invariant representations is pivotal for DG as they possess the ability to capture the inherent semantic information of the data, mitigate the influence of domain shift, and enhance the generalization capability of the model. Adopting multiple perspectives, such as the sample and the feature, proves to be effective. The sample perspective facilitates data augmentation through data manipulation techniques, whereas the feature perspective enables the extraction of meaningful generalization features. In this paper, we focus on improving the generalization ability of the model by compelling it to acquire domain-invariant representations from both the sample and feature perspectives by disentangling spurious correlations and enhancing potential correlations. 1) From the sample perspective, we develop a frequency restriction module, guiding the model to focus on the relevant correlations between object features and labels, thereby disentangling spurious correlations. 2) From the feature perspective, the simple Tail Interaction module implicitly enhances potential correlations among all samples from all source domains, facilitating the acquisition of domain-invariant representations across multiple domains for the model. The experimental results show that Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) or Multi-Layer Perceptrons (MLPs) with a strong baseline embedded with these two modules can achieve superior results, e.g., an average accuracy of 92.30% on Digits-DG.

M31N 2013-10c: A Newly Identified Recurrent Nova in M31

The nova M31N 2023-11f (2023yoa) has been recently identified as the second eruption of a previously recognized nova, M31N 2013-10c, establishing the latter object as the 21st recurrent nova system thus far identified in M31. Here we present well sampled $R$-band lightcurves of both the 2013 and 2023 eruptions of this system. The photometric evolution of each eruption was quite similar as expected for the same progenitor system. The 2013 and 2023 eruptions each reached peak magnitudes just brighter than $R\sim16$, with fits to the declining branches of the eruptions yielding times to decline by two magnitudes of $t_2(R)=5.5\pm1.7$ and $t_2(R)=3.4\pm1.5$ days, respectively. M31N 2013-10c has an absolute magnitude at peak, $M_R=-8.8\pm0.2$, making it the most luminous known recurrent nova in M31.

USFM: A Universal Ultrasound Foundation Model Generalized to Tasks and Organs towards Label Efficient Image Analysis

Inadequate generality across different organs and tasks constrains the application of ultrasound (US) image analysis methods in smart healthcare. Building a universal US foundation model holds the potential to address these issues. Nevertheless, the development of such foundational models encounters intrinsic challenges in US analysis, i.e., insufficient databases, low quality, and ineffective features. In this paper, we present a universal US foundation model, named USFM, generalized to diverse tasks and organs towards label efficient US image analysis. First, a large-scale Multi-organ, Multi-center, and Multi-device US database was built, comprehensively containing over two million US images. Organ-balanced sampling was employed for unbiased learning. Then, USFM is self-supervised pre-trained on the sufficient US database. To extract the effective features from low-quality US images, we proposed a spatial-frequency dual masked image modeling method. A productive spatial noise addition-recovery approach was designed to learn meaningful US information robustly, while a novel frequency band-stop masking learning approach was also employed to extract complex, implicit grayscale distribution and textural variations. Extensive experiments were conducted on the various tasks of segmentation, classification, and image enhancement from diverse organs and diseases. Comparisons with representative US image analysis models illustrate the universality and effectiveness of USFM. The label efficiency experiments suggest the USFM obtains robust performance with only 20% annotation, laying the groundwork for the rapid development of US models in clinical practices.

Milliarcsecond Localisation of the Hyperactive Repeating FRB 20220912A

We present very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations of the hyperactive repeating FRB 20220912A using the European VLBI Network (EVN) with an EVN-Lite setup. We detected 150 bursts from FRB 20220912A over two observing epochs in October 2022. Combining the data of these bursts allows us to localise FRB 20220912A to a precision of a few milliarcseconds, corresponding to a transverse scale of less than 10 pc at the distance of the source. The precision of this localisation shows that FRB 20220912A lies closer to the centre of its host galaxy than previously found, although still significantly offset from the host galaxy's nucleus. On arcsecond scales, FRB 20220912A is coincident with a persistent continuum radio source known from archival observations, however, we find no compact persistent emission on milliarcsecond scales. The persistent radio emission is thus likely to be from star-formation in the host galaxy. This is in contrast to some other active FRBs, such as FRB 20121102A and FRB 20190520B.

Discovery and Timing of Millisecond Pulsars in the Globular Cluster M5 (NGC 5904) with FAST and Arecibo

We report on a comprehensive multi-wavelength study of the pulsars in the globular cluster (GC) M5, including the discovery of M5G, a new compact non-eclipsing "black widow" pulsar. Thanks to the analysis of 34 years of radio data taken with the FAST and Arecibo telescopes, we obtained new phase-connected timing solutions for four pulsars in the clusters and improved those of the other three known pulsars. These have resulted in, among other things: a) much improved proper motions for five pulsars, with transverse velocities that are smaller than their respective escape velocities; b) 3-sigma and 1.5-sigma detections of Shapiro delays in M5F and M5D, respectively; c) greatly improved measurement of the periastron advance in M5B, whose value of 0.01361(6) implies that M5B is still likely to be a heavy neutron star. The binary pulsars M5D, E and F are confirmed to be in low-eccentricity binary systems, the low-mass companions of which are newly identified to be He white dwarfs using Hubble Space Telescope data. Four pulsars are also found to be associated with X-ray sources. Similarly to the eclipsing pulsar M5C, M5G shows little or no non-thermal X-ray emission, indicative of weak synchrotron radiation produced by intra-binary shocks. All the seven pulsars known in M5 have short spin periods and five are in binary systems with low orbital eccentricities. These characteristics differ from the overall GC pulsar population, but confirm the expectations for the pulsar population in a cluster with a small rate of stellar encounters per binary system.

Precessing jet nozzle connecting to a spinning black hole in M87

The nearby radio galaxy M87 offers a unique opportunity to explore the connections between the central supermassive black hole and relativistic jets. Previous studies of the inner region of M87 revealed a wide opening angle for the jet originating near the black hole. The Event Horizon Telescope resolved the central radio source and found an asymmetric ring structure consistent with expectations from General Relativity. With a baseline of 17 years of observations, there was a shift in the jet's transverse position, possibly arising from an eight to ten-year quasi-periodicity. However, the origin of this sideways shift remains unclear. Here we report an analysis of radio observations over 22 years that suggests a period of about 11 years in the position angle variation of the jet. We infer that we are seeing a spinning black hole that induces the Lense-Thirring precession of a misaligned accretion disk. Similar jet precession may commonly occur in other active galactic nuclei but has been challenging to detect owing to the small magnitude and long period of the variation.

The Qitai Radio Telescope

This study presents a general outline of the Qitai radio telescope (QTT) project. Qitai, the site of the telescope, is a county of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China, located in the east Tianshan Mountains at an elevation of about 1800 m. The QTT is a fully steerable, Gregorian type telescope with a standard parabolic main reflector of 110 m diameter. The QTT has adopted an um-brella support, homology-symmetric lightweight design. The main reflector is active so that the deformation caused by gravity can be corrected. The structural design aims to ultimately allow high-sensitivity observations from 150 MHz up to 115 GHz. To satisfy the requirements for early scientific goals, the QTT will be equipped with ultra-wideband receivers and large field-of-view mul-ti-beam receivers. A multi-function signal-processing system based on RFSoC and GPU processor chips will be developed. These will enable the QTT to operate in pulsar, spectral line, continuum and Very Long Baseline Interferometer (VLBI) observing modes. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and radio frequency interference (RFI) control techniques are adopted throughout the system design. The QTT will form a world-class observational platform for the detection of low-frequency (nanoHertz) gravitational waves through pulsar timing array (PTA) techniques, pulsar surveys, the discovery of binary black-hole systems, and exploring dark matter and the origin of life in the universe.
