The FAST Galactic Plane Pulsar Snapshot Survey: II. Discovery of 76 Galactic rotating radio transients and their enigma

We are carrying out the GPPS survey by using the FAST, the most sensitive systematic pulsar survey in the Galactic plane. In addition to about 500 pulsars already discovered through normal periodical search, we report here the discovery of 76 new transient radio sources with sporadic strong pulses, detected by using the newly developed module for a sensitive single pulse search. Their small DM values suggest that they all are the Galactic RRATs. More radio pulses have been detected from 26 transient radio sources but no periods can be found due to a limited small number of pulses from all FAST observations. The following-up observations show that 16 transient sources are newly identified as being the prototypes of RRATs with a period already determined from more detected sporadic pulses, 10 sources are extremely nulling pulsars, and 24 sources are weak pulsars with sparse strong pulses. On the other hand, 48 previously known RRATs have been detected by the FAST. Except for 1 RRAT with four pulses detected in a session of five minute observation and 4 RRATs with only one pulse detected in a session, sensitive FAST observations reveal that 43 RRATs are just generally weak pulsars with sporadic strong pulses or simply very nulling pulsars, so that the previously known RRATs always have an extreme emission state together with a normal hardly detectable weak emission state. This is echoed by the two normal pulsars J1938+2213 and J1946+1449 with occasional brightening pulses. Though strong pulses of RRATs are very outstanding in the energy distribution, their polarization angle variations follow the polarization angle curve of the averaged normal pulse profile, suggesting that the predominant sparse pulses of RRATs are emitted in the same region with the same geometry as normal weak pulsars.

An Entropy Coding Based on Binary Encoding for Mixed-Radix Digits

The necessity of radix conversion of numeric data is an indispensable component in any complete analysis of digital computation. In this paper, we propose a binary encoding for mixed-radix digits. Second, a variant of rANS coding based on this conversion is given, which supports parallel decoding. The simulations show that the proposed coding in serial mode has a higher throughput than the baseline (with the speed-up factor about 2X) without loss of compression ratio, and it outperforms the existing 2-way interleaving implementation.

Reciprocating Magnetic Fields in the Pulsar Wind Observed from the Black Widow Pulsar J1720-0534

We report the radio observations of the eclipsing black widow pulsar J1720-0534, a 3.26 ms pulsar in orbit with a low mass companion of mass 0.029 to 0.034 M$_{\odot}$. We obtain the phase-connected timing ephemeris and polarization profile of this millisecond pulsar (MSP) using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST), the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), and the Parkes Telescope. For the first time from such a system, an oscillatory polarisation angle change was observed from a particular eclipse egress with partial depolarization, indicating 10-milliGauss-level reciprocating magnetic fields oscillating in a length scale of 5000 km (assuming an orbital inclination angle of 90 degrees) outside the companion's magnetosphere. The dispersion measure variation observed during the ingresses and egresses shows the rapid raising of the electron density in the shock boundary between the companion's magnetosphere and the surrounding pulsar wind. We suggest that the observed oscillatory magnetic fields originate from the pulsar wind outside the companion's magnetosphere.

Automatic lobe segmentation using attentive cross entropy and end-to-end fissure generation

The automatic lung lobe segmentation algorithm is of great significance for the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases, however, which has great challenges due to the incompleteness of pulmonary fissures in lung CT images and the large variability of pathological features. Therefore, we propose a new automatic lung lobe segmentation framework, in which we urge the model to pay attention to the area around the pulmonary fissure during the training process, which is realized by a task-specific loss function. In addition, we introduce an end-to-end pulmonary fissure generation method in the auxiliary pulmonary fissure segmentation task, without any additional network branch. Finally, we propose a registration-based loss function to alleviate the convergence difficulty of the Dice loss supervised pulmonary fissure segmentation task. We achieve 97.83% and 94.75% dice scores on our private dataset STLB and public LUNA16 dataset respectively.

Comprehensive study of the blazars from Fermi-LAT LCR: The log-normal flux distribution and linear RMS-Flux relation

Fermi-LAT LCR provide continuous and regularly-sampled gamma-ray light curves, spanning about 14 years, for a large sample of blazars. The log-normal flux distribution and linear RMS-Flux relation of the light curves for a few of Fermi blazar have been examined in previous studies. However, the probability that blazars exhibit log-normal flux distribution and linear RMS-Flux relation in their gamma-ray light curves has not been systematically explored. In this study, we comprehensively research on the distribution of gamma-ray flux and the statistical characteristics on a large sample of 1414 variable blazars from the Fermi-LAT LCR catalog, including 572 FSRQs, 477 BL Lacs, and 365 BCUs, and statistically compare their flux distributions with normal and log-normal distributions. The results indicate that the probability of not reject log-normal is 42.05% for the large sample, and there is still 2.05% probability of not reject normality, based on the joint of Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk and Normality tests. We further find that the probability that BL Lacs conforms to the log-normal distribution is higher than that of FSRQs. Besides, after removing sources with less than 200 data points from this large sample, a sample of 549 blazars, which is still a large sample comparing to the previous studies, was obtained. Basing on dividing the light curves into segments every 20 points (or 40 points, or one year), we fitted the linear RMS-Flux relation of this three different sets, and found that the Pearson correlation coefficients are all close to 1 of the most blazars. This result indicates a strong linear correlation between the RMS and the flux of this 549 blazars. The log-normal distribution and linear RMS-Flux relation indicate that the variability of gamma-ray flux for most blazars is non-linear and multiplicative process.

A Novel Reversible Data Hiding Scheme Based on Asymmetric Numeral Systems

Reversible data hiding (RDH) has been extensively studied in the field of information security. In our previous work [1], an explicit implementation approaching the rate-distortion bound of RDH has been proposed. However, there are two challenges left in our previous method. Firstly, this method suffers from computing precision problem due to the use of arithmetic coding, which may cause the further embedding impossible. Secondly, it had to transmit the probability distribution of the host signals during the embedding/extraction process, yielding quite additional overhead and application limitations. In this paper, we first propose an RDH scheme that employs our recent asymmetric numeral systems (ANS) variant as the underlying coding framework to avoid the computing precision problem. Then, we give a dynamic implementation that does not require transmitting the host distribution in advance. The simulation results show that the proposed static method provides slightly higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) values than our previous work, and larger embedding capacity than some state-of-the-art methods on gray-scale images. In addition, the proposed dynamic method totally saves the explicit transmission of the host distribution and achieve data embedding at the cost of a small image quality loss.

Statistical properties and lensing effect on the repeating fast radio burst FRB 180916.J0158+65

FRB 180916.J0158+65 is a well-known repeating fast radio burst with a period ($16.35~\rm days$) and an active window ($5.0~\rm days$). We give out the statistical results of the dispersion measures and waiting times of bursts of FRB 180916.J0158+65. We find the dispersion measures at the different frequencies show a bimodal distribution. The peaking dispersion measures of the left mode of the bimodal distributions increase with frequency, but the right one is inverse. The waiting times also present the bimodal distribution, peaking at 0.05622s and 1612.91266s. The peaking time is irrelevant to the properties of bursts, either for the preceding or subsequent burst. By comparing the statistical results with possible theoretical models, we suggest that FRB 180916.J0158+65 suffered from the plasma lensing effects in the propagation path. Moreover, this source may be originated from a highly magnetized neutron star in a high-mass X-ray binary.

3D Boson representation of affine Yangian of ${\mathfrak{gl}}(1)$ and 3D cut-and-join operators

We have constructed 3D Bosons. In this paper, we show the 3D Bosonic Fock space, which is isomorphic to the vector space of 3D Young diagrams as graded vector spaces. We use 3D Bosons to represent the generators of the affine Yangian of ${\mathfrak{gl}}(1)$ and define the 3D cut-and-join operators. Then we discuss the 3D Boson representation of $W$-operators in matrix models.

Searching for the nano-Hertz stochastic gravitational wave background with the Chinese Pulsar Timing Array Data Release I

Observing and timing a group of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with high rotational stability enables the direct detection of gravitational waves (GWs). The GW signals can be identified from the spatial correlations encoded in the times-of-arrival of widely spaced pulsar-pairs. The Chinese Pulsar Timing Array (CPTA) is a collaboration aiming at the direct GW detection with observations carried out using Chinese radio telescopes. This short article serves as a `table of contents' for a forthcoming series of papers related to the CPTA Data Release 1 (CPTA DR1) which uses observations from the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Here, after summarizing the time span and accuracy of CPTA DR1, we report the key results of our statistical inference finding a correlated signal with amplitude $\log A_{\rm c}= -14.4 \,^{+1.0}_{-2.8}$ for spectral index in the range of $α\in [-1.8, 1.5]$ assuming a GW background (GWB) induced quadrupolar correlation. The search for the Hellings-Downs (HD) correlation curve is also presented, where some evidence for the HD correlation has been found that a 4.6-$σ$ statistical significance is achieved using the discrete frequency method around the frequency of 14 nHz. We expect that the future International Pulsar Timing Array data analysis and the next CPTA data release will be more sensitive to the nHz GWB, which could verify the current results.

Results of 23 yr of Pulsar Timing of PSR J1453-6413

In this paper, we presented the 23.3 years of pulsar timing results of PSR J1456-6413 based on the observation of Parkes 64m radio telescope. We detected two new glitches at MJD 57093(3) and 59060(12) and confirmed its first glitch at MJD 54554(10). Using the "Cholesky" timing analysis method, we have determined its position, proper motion, and two-dimensional transverse velocities from the data segments before and after the second glitch, respectively. Furthermore, we detected exponential recovery behavior after the first glitch, with a recovery time scale of approximately 200 days and a corresponding exponential recovery factor Q of approximately 0.15(2), while no exponential recovery was detected for the other two glitches. More interestingly, we found that the leading component of the integral pulse profile after the second glitch became stronger, while the main component became weaker. Our results will expand the sample of pulsars with magnetosphere fluctuation triggered by the glitch event.

KP hierarchy, affine Yangian and $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra

3D (dimensional) Young diagrams are a generalization of 2D Young diagrams. We want to construct the structures on 3D Young diagrams paralleled to that on 2D Young diagrams. We have already obtained the 3D Bosons, 3D Fermions and 3-Jack polynomials, which are the symmetric functions on 3D Young diagrams. In this paper, we realize the KP hierarchy by the fields $V_j(z)$ in the $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra, where $V_j(z)$ are constructed by $J_j(z)$, which are the Bosonic fields associated the 2D Young diagrams on the slices $z=j$ of 3D Young diagrams. We also show the correspondence between the Bosonic Fock spaces and Fermionic Fock space for the cases: Schur functions, Jack polynomials and 3-Jack polynomials.

Simultaneous preparation of two optical cat states based on a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier

The optical cat state, known as the superposition of coherent states, has broad applications in quantum computation and quantum metrology. Increasing the number of optical cat states is crucial to implement complex quantum information tasks based on them. Here, we prepare two optical cat states simultaneously based on a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier. By subtracting one photon from each of two squeezed vacuum states, two odd cat states with orthogonal superposition direction in phase space are prepared simultaneously, which have similar fidelity of 60% and amplitude of 1.2. Compared with the traditional method to generate two odd optical cat states based on two degenerate optical parametric amplifiers, only one nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier is applied in our experiment, which saves half of the quantum resource of nonlinear cavities. The presented results make a step toward preparing the four-component cat state, which has potential applications in fault-tolerant quantum computation.

Dynamics of the clumps partially disrupted from a planet around a neutron star

Tidal disruption events are common in the Universe, which may occur in various compact star systems and could account for many astrophysical phenomena. Depending on the separation between the central compact star and its companion, either a full disruption or a partial disruption may occur. The partial disruption of a rocky planet around a neutron star can produce kilometer-sized clumps, but the main portion of the planet can survive. The dynamical evolution of these clumps is still poorly understood. In this study, the characteristics of partial disruption of a rocky planet in a highly elliptical orbit around a neutron star is investigated. The periastron of the planet is assumed to be very close to the neutron star so that it would be partially disrupted by tidal force every time it passes through the periastron. It is found that the fragments generated in the process will change their orbits on a time scale of a few orbital periods due to the combined influence of the neutron star and the remnant planet, and will finally collide with the central neutron star. Possible outcomes of the collisions are discussed.

Remote preparation of optical cat states based on Gaussian entanglement

Remote state preparation enables one to prepare and manipulate quantum state non-locally. As an essential quantum resource, optical cat state is usually prepared locally by subtracting photons from a squeezed vacuum state. For remote quantum information processing, it is essential to prepare and manipulate optical cat states remotely based on Gaussian entanglement, which remains a challenge. Here, we present experimental preparation of optical cat states based on a remotely distributed two-mode Gaussian entangled state in a lossy channel. By performing photon subtraction and homodyne projective measurement at Alice's station, an optical cat state is prepared remotely at Bob's station. Furthermore, the prepared cat state is rotated by changing Alice's measurement basis of homodyne detection, which demonstrates the remote manipulation of it. By distributing two modes of the two-mode Gaussian entangled state in lossy channels, we demonstrate that the remotely prepared cat state can tolerate much more loss in Alice's channel than that in Bob's channel. We also show that cat states with amplitudes larger than 2 can be prepared by increasing the squeezing level and subtracting photon numbers. Our results make a crucial step toward remote hybrid quantum information processing involving discrete- and continuous-variable techniques.

ALOFT: A Lightweight MLP-like Architecture with Dynamic Low-frequency Transform for Domain Generalization

Domain generalization (DG) aims to learn a model that generalizes well to unseen target domains utilizing multiple source domains without re-training. Most existing DG works are based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs). However, the local operation of the convolution kernel makes the model focus too much on local representations (e.g., texture), which inherently causes the model more prone to overfit to the source domains and hampers its generalization ability. Recently, several MLP-based methods have achieved promising results in supervised learning tasks by learning global interactions among different patches of the image. Inspired by this, in this paper, we first analyze the difference between CNN and MLP methods in DG and find that MLP methods exhibit a better generalization ability because they can better capture the global representations (e.g., structure) than CNN methods. Then, based on a recent lightweight MLP method, we obtain a strong baseline that outperforms most state-of-the-art CNN-based methods. The baseline can learn global structure representations with a filter to suppress structure irrelevant information in the frequency space. Moreover, we propose a dynAmic LOw-Frequency spectrum Transform (ALOFT) that can perturb local texture features while preserving global structure features, thus enabling the filter to remove structure-irrelevant information sufficiently. Extensive experiments on four benchmarks have demonstrated that our method can achieve great performance improvement with a small number of parameters compared to SOTA CNN-based DG methods. Our code is available at https://github.com/lingeringlight/ALOFT/.

Direct observation of geometric and sliding ferroelectricity in an amphidynamic crystal

Sliding ferroelectricity is a recently observed polarity existing in two-dimensional materials. However, due to their weak polarization and poor electrical insulation in these materials, all available experimental evidence till now are indirect, with most based on transport properties in the nanoscale or piezoresponse force microscopy. We report the direct observation of sliding ferroelectricity, using a high-quality amphidynamic single crystal, (15-Crown-5)Cd$_3$Cl$_6$, which possesses a large band-gap and so allows direct measurement of P-E hysteresis. This coordination polymer is a van der Waals material, which is composed of inorganic stators and organic rotators as measured using XRD and NMR characterisation. From DFT calculations, we find that after the freezing of rotators an electric dipole is generated in each layer driven by the geometric mechanism, meanwhile a comparable ferroelectric polarization originates from the interlayer sliding. The net polarization of these two components can be directly measured and manipulated. Our finding provides insight into low-dimensional ferroelectrics, especially the controlling of synchronous dynamics of rotating molecules and sliding layers in solids.

Study of pulsar flux density and its variability with Parkes data archive

We present average flux density measurements of 151 radio pulsars at 1.4 GHz with the Parkes 'Murriyang' radio telescope. We recommend our results be included in the next version of the ATNF pulsar catalogue. The large sample of pulsars together with their wide dispersion measure (DM) range make this data set useful for studying variability of flux density, pulsar spectra, and interstellar medium (ISM). We derive the modulation indices and structure-function from the flux density time series for 95 and 54 pulsars, respectively. We suggest the modulation index also be included in the next version of the pulsar catalogue to manifest the variability of pulsar flux density. The modulation index of flow density and DM are negatively correlated. The refractive scintillation (RISS) timescales or its lower bound for a set of 15 pulsars are derived. They are very different from theoretical expectations, implying the complicated properties of the ISM along different lines of sight. The structure-function for other pulsars is flat. The RISS parameters for some of these pulsars possibly could be derived with different observing strategies in the future.

3D Bosons and $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra

In this paper, we consider 3D Young diagrams with at most $N$ layers in $z$-axis direction, which can be constructed by $N$ 2D Young diagrams on slice $z=j$, $j=1,2,\cdots, N$ from the Yang-Baxter equation. Use 2D Bosons $\{a_{j,m},\ m\in\Z\}$ associated to 2D Young diagrams on the slice $z=j$, we constructed 3D Bosons. Then we show the 3D Boson representation of $W_{1+\infty}$ algebra, and the Littlewood-Richardson rule for 3-Jack polynomials from the actions of 3D Bosons on 3D Young diagrams.
